I have to say it , out of all the US reactors on AFL you are picking it up the fastest and show the most passion for the game . This is a fantastic last quarter and really showcases exactly what AFL is all about . Its not just high scoring its the drama , it's the fans , the ecstasy and agony of the players. As others have said you are coming into the sport just at the right time with the new season just about to start . Unfortunate for Carlton fans though , Silvani , one of their better and most loved players just ruptured his ACL in his knee at training and will be out for the whole season . Really rotten luck and even though Im a Cats fan we all wish him the best in his recovery.

A fun fact about the in-person experience. The clock at the ground doesn't count down, it counts up and doesn't stop. So what that means is when you're at the game you do not know exactly how much time is left which really adds to the tension.

You also have to think about it this way when it comes to the sides in the footy: When a person chooses a team, they stay with them, diehard. It isn't like here in the NFL where you'll follow multiple teams and multiple games; when you barrack for a team there you always barrack for a team, through thick and thin. For example, Melbourne hadn't won the premiership since 1959, and their supporters struggled through every single year since then, to the point where people thought the team was cursed. Then finally, 57 years later, in 2021, they finally won one. That's a HUGE drought, but not even the hugest; the South Melbourne Swans (now the Sydney Swans) held the record at the time for the longest drought, at 72 years, having won in 1933, then nothing until 2005. The day they won the Grand Final that year, there were fans with them who SAW the 1933 win, and were still with them the entire time. That's how passionate the fans are.
Now, for hating Collingwood, while it's part of the passion for the game, you're free to choose whatever side you want. I mean, Mason Cox (American) plays for Collingwood, and just won a premiership himself. At the time, I (American) was an international member of Carlton, as I barracked for them when they last won in 1995. They've been starved of finals (playoffs) action for a LONG time, always having been beat in the first week, should they make it. So that 96K of fans there were definitely passionate. The MCG holds over 100,000 people, and that's how many were at the Grand Final.
Believe me when I say as a fellow American, that once you watch this sport and get a few games under your belt, you'll never go back to the boring start/stop/plan/play inanity of the NFL. you'll find it too slow.

Mid to lower scoring game, afl has gotten progressively lower scoring and higher pressure over the last 30 years, this is about the quintessential afl game.
    Port Adelaide Vs Melbourne 2023
    Richmond Vs Essendon 2023
Anzac Day (Essendon v Collingwood) 2023
Brisbane v Richmond elimination final 2022
Port Adelaide v Essendon 2023 (the later season)
Port Adelaide Vs Collingwood 2023 (the later season one)
Those are all very good games from the last two years
Also the Australian football league AFL, used to be the Victorian football league VFL and all the teams were based in and around the city of Melbourne, it was only in the 80s did they expand interstate to solve their financial problems (resulting in the death of Fitzroy fc and the birth of the Brisbane lions). So roughly half the teams are from Victoria (which are mostly suburban teams such as Carlton and Essendon) and the other half are interstate teams (based in big cities such as Brisbane and Sydney). These suburban teams have fierce rivalries and long histories, making for a really interesting club feel.

I like the announcers too. Sometimes they say the stoopidest things and they really crack me up. One thing that I've noticed in my love for Footy is that, you're generally gonna be treated to at least one good belly laugh per game. It'll be either something that happens on the field or some "Wag" in the crowd or something that the Announcers say. SOMETHING is gonna make you laugh, guaranteed, at least once per game. What could be better, sport and laughing.

Don't rush into choosing an AFL team to support for the rest of your life. During one off-season for AFL, I learnt to love NFL by watching every available broadcast game as a 'neutral' and cheering for whoever was losing at the time. After a while, I was supporting one team over all others based on the fact they weren't always winning but had some exciting rookies. Plus they had a nickname that appealed to my personal background.

60 Minutes (USA) did a story on Mason Cox, the only American to play in the AFL. We were able to watch the episode on their website, but it's now geo-bocked. You might have better luck. There's also a shorter vid still on UA-cam they put out as 'extra content'. (Others have probably pointed out the AFL vid called 'Don't Believe in Never' about Cox's story - also a good watch.) Vice Sports did a rivals series and featured the rivalry between Carlton and Collingwood which can be watched on UA-cam. The 60 Minutes and Vice vids are all worth a watch if you're interested, even if you don't react to them.

Great reaction, love how much you get into the sport! I was at this game along with many last year, but this one had another level of intensity to it. My partner is a lifelong Melbourne fan so suffice to say they were gutted. A few tidbits you may not be aware of too:
4:23 Carlton player Adam Saad gets a loud "WOOF" from the crowd literally every time he kicks the ball
7:10 fans were mad because it was ruled a Melbourne player knocked the head of a Carlton player, giving Carlton possession, although from that angle its difficult to see what really happened. A few seconds later, the '50' call was a 50-metre penalty against Melbourne, for not immediately following umpire instructions
11:12 Finals attendance is MUCH bigger than during the regular season, depending on the teams playing. The Grand final last year sold out which is over 100,000 attendees.
14:43 Umpire mics are broadcast on TV (and therefore this playback) but generally not at the actual game.
17:10 Umpire called the ball back the goal square on a formality and I believe that's what the fans were angry about with seconds ticking down
AFL scorelines can differ drastically, this was a fantastic contest and a close game, but its not super uncommon for games to end with a 40-50 point difference. One game last year ended with a scoreline of 205-34 (Sydney Swans v West Coast Eagles)
And yes, hating Collingwood is a true blue Aussie tradition (Especially as an Essendon supporter!)

Each team can play very well on the day but not always. The fast pace of a team and their ability to play a 360 degree game for 120 minutes at fast pace, the ability they have to use the ball by foot or hand, and the skills they have. It’s our game it’s Aussie rules. Enjoy it.

2023 in my opinion was the greatest series of finals and from what I can recall they were all close games.
The one I remember most wwas the GWS Giants versus the Collingwood Magpies and the winner of that game made it through to the Grand Final.
My only 2 complaints with the AFL would be when its a day game such as the Grand Final the red ball is so hard to see compaired to the amber ball used in day / twilight or night games on tv. The other is the time clock on the tv broadcast used to count down from 20 minutes to zero minutes. Once zero minutes were reached the time clock would count up in time, 20.50 and so on 22.45 so as a spectatoror or tv viewer you had absolutley no idea on how much time was left to play which made it more exciting for the fans and viewers especially like this game.

Back when we were a 12 team, Victoria-based competition, we had a top 5 at the end of the regular (home and away) season. First week was 2v3 (qualifying final) and 4v5 ( elimination final). Second week was semifinals - 1 v qualifying winner (1st semi), and qualifying loser v elimination winner hand semi). Winner of 1st semi goes straight to grand final; loser of 1st semi and winner of 2nd semi go to preliminary final. Third week - preliminary final; winner goes through to grand. 4th week - grand final.
When the competition went national, with more teams, they still retained the names of the finals rounds, even though the structure of the actual finals changed massively as more teams went through to the finals.

You just witnessed greatness. That was probably the best Carlton game I have ever experienced. That was the best they've played in about 20 years. This team now is destined for something great. So hop on the Carlton Football Club. We are probably the most successful team and we have had a rich history bar the last 20 odd years. Mainly before the year 2000. But now, if you join us in 2024, you won't be disappointed.
BTW, it's pronounced 'Melb-ne' not 'melborne'

In a finals match, you want a tight competitive game; the closer the score, the greater the adrenaline for both players and spectators alike. A walk over game is okay during the minor rounds, but not what you want to see in the major rounds.

You should check out the last round of the 2022 Season, Carlton vs Collingwood. Both sides had a lot riding on this game, Collingwood needed to win to make the top 4, which would give them the Double Chance in the finals, and Carlton had to win to make the finals for the first time in over ten years, it was a sensational game.

"Rooting for a team...". Ah, no, mate. To root, in Aussie slang means to have sex. It's a somewhat milder term than f___k, but is still not used in "nice" company. We "barrack" for teams. The term originates from the early days of footy in the 19th century when football/cricket grounds were often adjacent to army barracks. There were often no grand stands, so people would sit on the roof of the barracks, watch the game from there, and yell and cheer.
For example: I barrack for (support) St Kilda, and if I barrack too much (yell and cheer too much) at the game, I might come home thoroughly rooted (exhausted/f___cked) and need a beer. I hope that makes some sense. To say you "root for a team" has weird connotations, as you can imagine.

    G’day Mate,
(So many foreigners are seeing the Americanised Rules video first, so i created this generic comment as it basically applies to just about every one, if you’ve already seen a suggested video, just ignore it & move on).
I’m glad your enjoying our game, but I should point out that the first “rules” video is unfortunately full of inaccuracies and omissions, and that’s odd since it was the Australian AFL ruling body that commissioned it.
The very first thing to be addressed ( and I will mention it later again in full), but this game is NOT a mix of other games or American games.
AND It is absolutely understandable why most might think this so, but it’s simply not true as every game that looks like it might have similar roots, like volleyball and basketball etc we’re invent many years (even decades) later after AFL .
So To start with, here are some comments and corrections in no particular order.
First of, it’s 15 metres “before” your required to bounce the ball, it’s just been rounded to 16 yards for the American audience, for which the first typical video most get to see was created. Also, you don’t just have to bounce it, you can alternatively bend down whilst running, and touch the ball to the ground as well (although rarely seen nowadays).
The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) holds over 100,000 people, not 90,000. I know the Vid said 90,000 plus, but that implies a lower true figure, so it’s a poor choice of words.
They play on Cricket pitches, hence the round oval shape, and since cricket pitches are different sizes, there is no standard pitch size, so any figures that will get quoted, are only average estimates.
The 20 minute quarters can have 10 additional minutes PER quarter, not 10 minutes for the whole game.
This is a truly 360 degree game, so when they say no offside rule, it’s a massive understatement that you will only understand after watching a few minutes of continuous play. And you can get hit from Any direction at all (and therefore no “Knock on rule”).
And what isn’t mentioned at all, is that their is absolutely no “Time Outs” of any description at all, for eg. if a player is injured, the game still continues on around him without stopping.
The only exception to this is if he needs to be stretchered of, other wise the play goes on as the injured player walks off, there is video on UA-cam with players with clearly broken arms, walking off.
This 1st video is an updated version, that fixes most (but not all the) issues and omissions in the Americanised version of the video most people see first. (To be clear, the errors are our fault, i.e. us Aussies, as it was the AFL who wrote the script to help educate US citizens).
    ua-cam.com/video/u_SqfNNfhmM/v-deo.html
This 2nd video is done by an Englishman (Pom), and it does a better job of explaining the basics (in regards to the original AFL,s own video), but since some of the rules have changed, it’s also slightly inaccurate too, but not in any fundamental important matters though, and it does give a list of offences that none of the others do, so it’s still worth a watch.
    ua-cam.com/video/Mnv32s8jPz0/v-deo.html.
This next vid helps fill in some gaps, but it leaves stuff out too, so it’s only really useful as a supplementary video, but it’s still very good for what it does do.
    ua-cam.com/video/64elNqf3Kxg/v-deo.html
This last video nicely wraps it all up. But don’t be put of by it’s apparent length as only the 1st 14 minutes are actually about the game itself as the rest is about the clubs and their history. It also covers how inclusive the game is as well.
But whilst you’re of course welcome to see the rest, you only need to see the first 14 minutes to better understand the game, and of those 1st 14 minutes the first 4 minutes are a preamble and a very little bit of history that’s well worth watching too.
    ua-cam.com/video/Dtmu-1kMFZw/v-deo.html
(Update) Before we move along and in support of the previous Videos closing remarks about Aussie AFL fans. Here’s what happened When Buddy Franklin Scored his 1000th goal (yes that really is One Thousand Goals, NOT including behinds I.E. the One pointers).
This milestone has only happened 5 times previously in the 150 year plus history of this game. That’s why the crowd reacted the way they did. The anticipation for this moment was absolutely huge all game.
It took nearly half an hour tho clear the cricket ground (pitch).
    ua-cam.com/video/HgM3W6gnJGg/v-deo.html
These next videos are not rules related as such, but a bit of everything else of potential interest.
To start of with, If your interested in the history of the game, as it’s arguably the oldest game on earth, well at least certain aspects of it are anyway. The following videos should help to enlighten you why this is case.
At the 1:27 min mark, they specifically mentioned how the AFL Ruling body, has finally recognised the influence of Marngrook on AFL.
    ua-cam.com/video/8pJftbDqFfY/v-deo.html
To be Clear. It’s the jumping up high (I.E. marking) of the ball component of Marngrook, that’s of specific importance, and is what was carried across to the new game.
    ua-cam.com/video/7UlHJgrkgM8/v-deo.html
    ua-cam.com/video/k8dPdHMZiQg/v-deo.html
This little Documentary has certain facts that have since been clarified and confirmed, as shown in the earlier video suggestions.
But the History of Tom Wills is still accurate.
Take Note: At 4:31. Specific mention is made of the hand written rules, including a photo of the original hand written rules of what’s now called, Australian Rules Football.
    ua-cam.com/video/fv6dAoUcSrM/v-deo.html
What’s now known as Australian Rules, is indeed the first game to have a “standardised” set of “codified” rules of any football code.
Another point of interest is that the Australian Aborigines have a PROVEN historical ability to remember and pass on their stories. So to go of track ever so slightly, it’s been discovered that they have racial memories (stories that are passed down over time) that actually date back to before the last ice age. It’s also a proven fact that the Australian Aborigines have the OLDEST Continuous culture of any race, on earth. (Feel free to check this out at your own leisure as it’s fascinating in its own right).
    .
    ua-cam.com/video/7UlHJgrkgM8/v-deo.html
    ua-cam.com/video/k8dPdHMZiQg/v-deo.html
To be fair (and clear), just about every game ever invented, basically starts of without written rules. This is especially true of soccer as it’s history dates back to the Middle Ages. Therefore various games (of all sorts) have evolved over time, this is a universal constant.
It’s just that Australian Football was specifically created for a very specific purpose right from the very beginning, and so setting out rules was an automatic imperative right from the start. Neither the early forms of soccer or rugby (or any other type of game) had this type of need in their early days.
Australia (Victoria to be more specific) was the First Nation to have a 8 hour work day 40 hour work week. So we had Saturday free to play sport, before other countries, this has been postulated as another reason why it was easy for us to create a game in the fashion that we did, and why it was taken up so quickly.
What translates to AFL, is the consolidated components of pre Codified Soccer/football, pre codified Rugby, Marngrook etc, as well as some other unique aspects of his own too (like bouncing/touching the ball to the ground), that was then all mixed up and combined into our very own game which we happened to write some rules down before anyone else got around to it.
To put it simply, No one has ever denied the fact that AFL is made up of early forms of other football style of games with our own bits added as well.
But having said that. AFL actually predates Soccer, Rugby, Gridiron, Basketball, Volleyball etc.
So it’s not actually accurate to say that it’s a mix of other sports, as that implies that AFL copied those aspects and that they came first, but to be fair, it is also entirely understandable why that assumption is constantly made.
To sum up. These suggestions are about the background and history of AFL.
There are other far more exciting videos to watch, such as ones like these.
I will start of with what was a pop song in the 70’s but has become the main AFL theme song (their are others). What makes this video specifically interesting was that it was before a lot of the rules to make it a safer game, had been made. It has some spectacular footage. (Just the 5 secs from 0:30 to 0:35, prove this point).
And BTW Roy Cazaly was the name of a famous player that could jump, hence the cry “ Up their Cazaly” and thus the title for the song.
I maybe biased, but it’s still a damn good song.
    ua-cam.com/video/pxM8XB61ZvU/v-deo.html
This one is well worth reacting too.
These next vids are of course subjective, and it’s only a taste of what’s on UA-cam. I’m not saying they are the best, just a good example of what’s available, and they are all worth reacting to as well.

Of course there are plenty more like this that are out there, but I will finish up with one that shows just some of the biggest hits done to a strangely appropriate rap song.

I have some constructive criticism, I'm not sure if it's intentional or not but the timestamps are showing up inside the captions making them difficult to read.
I'm assuming whoever wrote the captions originally had them in to make syncing them easier but it's quick distracting if you're someone who relies on them or even just likes the convenience such as myself.
(edit) I also just noticed they're actually quite out of sync for the length of the video, this could very well be a problem on my end but I thought it worth a mention
I do think however that commissioning captions on a video from such a small channel is amazing and I thank you for it.
