Prisoners tho 🔥🔥🔥
Your top two should be in everybody’s top 10 I don’t know how they wouldn’t be. Good Will Hunting has got to be up there too. The largest scream/jump scare I’ve ever seen in a movie theater was in Jurassic Park. My mom took me to see it when I was like 12 when it came out. The part where they get the power back on and she says “looks like we’re back in business”, a raptor jumps through the wall and till this day that is the loudest I’ve ever heard an audience scream. Is not even close. I’ll have to check out prisoners. I’ve never seen it.

How do we distinguish between the greatness of DDL's performances in Lincoln, There Will Be Blood, and Gangs of New York? Each is peak acting craft. Each has aspects of the other yet is distinct - revealing the precision of DDL's committed ability. My own choice is Bill the Butcher. This in part is because I knew someone, an old time gang leader who was precisely like Bill the Butcher (in appearance, mannerism, stature, even humor - yes a terrifying man). DDL captured a depth of truth that ... should rest beyond what most could even understand. Also Bill the Butcher exhibited a tenderness to his sociopathy, sincere affections that humanize him yet are lost to his first loyalty - to his own rage. No other character in cinema history exhibits such pure complexities and at the same time such extremes that are completely over the top yet, through DDL completely believable as only he could understand.
If ever you find yourself sitting in John C. Reilly's seat, given the mandate to "...to punish...the person....who is repsonsible...for murdering...this... poor little rabbit" then you will know.

How much do formative-years-memories influence what our favorites will be?
- With you guys' post-modern focus I would have thought that Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, & The Dark Knight would be on both of your lists.
- My own film appreciation was greatly influenced by my grandparents, so at the same time as the great 70s-80s classics came out (Spielberg, Lucas, Rocky, Aliens, Terminator, BTTF) I also watched the great Golden Era films and epics. It's impossible for me to separate any of them - from each other within my formative memories.
My own favorite 10:
1. Star Wars Trilogy 2. Lawrence of Arabia 3. The Godather I/II 4. Fight Club 5. Pulp Fiction 6. Forrest Gump 7. Lord of the Rings Trilogy 8. The Truman Show 9. The 10 Commandments 10. The Wizard of Oz
Honorable Mention: Apocalypse Now, The Dark Knight, The Fisher King, Parasite, Old Boy, Rocky, Gone With the Wind, City of God, Braveheart, Gladiator, Casino Royale, Silence of the Lambs, The Jerk
Considerations: The Green Mile, Gone Girl, Silence of the Lambs, Young Frankenstein, Princess Mononoke, Terminator I/II, MI 1, MI 3, Harry Potter Series, The Lion King, Snow White, Monsters Inc., The Shining, The Exorcist, Sorcerer, Schindler's List, Raisers of the Lost Arc, Contact, The Aviator, Catch Me if you Can, Mishima: A Life in 4 Chapters
The other question is, what are the parameters for favorite? So much depends upon mood, genre preference. - The one thing noted often here was ''watchability". This is a great rubric. However there can be favorites that may be so treasured, or so intense, that it is feels best to only watch them once or twice per decade.
@@destinypirate great stuff! For us, this list is films that we grew up watching and still rewatch regularly to this day

@@drwho37you justifying it makes me think otherwise, don’t justify your movie choices ever, being pompous is a quality, it doesn’t invalidate your opinions, if you like being a contrarian then own it, if you’re gonna get called pretentious for the things you like then fuck everyone else

@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ I've caught a lot of flack for having Extraction (2020) and The SpongeBob SquarePants Pants movie, but both are an absolute joy for me to watch. Really great lists! Everytime I redo my list I always find it hard to separate between my personal favourite movies and what I think the “best” movies that I’ve seen are. Do you ever run into this problem?
Not seven, don't start with seven. Somehow both a Silence of the Lambs clone that only takes the shallow parts and spawns a ton more clones that are just shallow boring and pointless.

Completely agree with the take on Godfather 2. It's one of my top 5 movies - DeNiro's performance as the young Vito Corleone is just amazing. Is there a more bad-ass sequence in cinema history than Vito killing the Black Hand, disposing of the gun, and then walking back to his apartment stoop to pick up one of his infant children, while that random Italian guy with the guitar starts playing and singing his theme song? 🤌🤌🤌🤌
I consider The Matrix on of the greatest films of all time.
I always love watching videos where people break down their favorite films of all time and why it is that it connects with them so much, i believe you get such a great sense of why it is they connect with the art they do even if you don't yourself, and that provides a much needed point of view to break up the monotony of hearing your own opinions repeated back at you! Anyways I'll list my top 10 all time favorite movies with 5 honorable mentions before I get into it, in order of release date!
Rashomon (1950)
The Thing (1982)
Come and See (1985)
La Haine (1995)
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
And now for my top 10, also in order of release date!

Beau Travail (1999)

The Zone of Interest (2023)
Double dipped with the selection of 2 Stanley Kubrick films and 2 Jonathan Glazer films (we all have our favorite filmmakers 😅) and I tried to select movies from all eras that I'm familiar with! One of the great things about cinema to me is that feeling of discovery and finding films, new and old, that slowly become your favorites over time and your favorite films may not always be such in a decades time! Anyways great video as always guys!

Yeah big difference between a My Favourites list and a Best Movies list!! I’m just gonna go straight to the top of my own list … The Matrix!!
🙏
There is no way to pick my 10 best movies, but I picked the 12 that made me cry a lot, not the only ones, but the ones that came to my mind without thinking too much. Since crying is a sign of good movie for me, they are in my list of favorites as well (soundtrack ALWAYS gets me):
-The father
-Interestellar
-The mission
-Talk to her
-AI
-First man
-Bright star
-Turtles can fly
-Arrival
-Cinema Paradiso
-All the mornings of the world
-City of god
(Schindler’s list would be here, but I never had the courage to watch it just by listening the soundtrack).
New in the channel, great show! Love the opening music!
OMG I love Turtles Can Fly! It was so powerful, I can’t believe kids carry out jobs like that
I think a good list should have something representing each decade or most of them. Also I think newer films should be lower down a list and be brought up over a long period of time to prevent recency bias becoming a factor which damages the lists credibility and there shouldn't be too many franchise films or comic book movies. Mine is not perfect but I think its better than most.
01. Patton
02. Casablanca
03. The Godfather
04. The Bridge on the River Kwai
05. All Quiet on the Western Front (1929)
06. Gone with the Wind
07. Ben-Hur
08. Lawrence of Arabia
09. Ordinary People
10. Ghandi
Will eventually add in The Godfather Part 2 and Schindler's List after I have watched them as I am sure they are great.
Open to constructive criticism
I mean, everyone’s entitled to their own list, putting restrictions on it doesn’t make sense
Listening to your list makes me wanna rewatch all of these movies 🍿
The part of intermission where Jim does his Shaun Penn impersonation caught me so off guard while I was drinking water at work it made me choke and spit everywhere.thank you for the entertaining show I’m new but working my way through and I absolutely love what I’ve heard and watched

@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ Hey would love to hear your thoughts on Eternal Sunshine, cuz I really enjoy how much you both dissect the movies you talk about but also how you perceive/value them. For me this was the movie that really opened my eye to analyzing movies both narratively but more importantly from the crafting/production perspective when this came out when I was in elementry. Its editing and practical effects are awe inspiring while it's narrative chronology and the subliminal implications of an unreliable narrator that is the mind of Joel while the character Joel is our vehicle to experience his relationship struggles, being one of the major effective examples of the rejection of the Hollywood romances in a time when those movies were ever present.
@@QP9237 For sure!
The way you guys remembering the movie lines is too funny.😂❤❤
