Don't know much about Broadway or even Musicals for that matter, but absolutely loved this film. Don't think I can agree with your criticisms.
The film is universal in its themes and that's what is appealing about it. Don't need to be a fan of the format or genre to like tick tick boom. Atleast that's my take.

The editing was purposeful to emphasize the frantic nature of completing Superbia. Strongly disagree. I don’t think you have to be a theatre fan to appreciate the film. It’s about following your dreams and the focus needed that could impact relationships.

Good Lord. 5.8 and 5.5? I understand that the specificity of the genre and the subject matter may not be your/anyone's thing, but again, I feel like so many scores this season (as of late) are much lower than the "discussion" in these videos suggest.

Hmmm... Everyone I know who has seen this, including people who don't like musicals, has loved this. I didn't really care for Rent but when I saw this musical in a small theatre in Ventura I quite liked it. I haven't watched the movie yet but I'm looking forward to it.

There's a lot to juggle here because it's based off of a musical which was based off of a one-man show that Larson did back in the early 90s.
Everything we see presented in the movie is basically taking it from the musical so it's not fully autobiographical.
IMO, Miranda pulled it off as well as he could

Lin Manuel Miranda is very clearly a theatre performer first, and the film is worse off because of that. Most of the numbers are either straight close-up or are played super close to the chest, with very limited camera movements that show an unwillingness to leave the perspective of the performer. And while yes, cinematic close-ups can highlight the emotion of a song in a way that a Broadway show could never hope to, the possibilities of the medium are endless, and, perhaps because of his background, Miranda doesn't really know how to explore them here.
Like, take "Sunday" (the one with all the Broadway legends). Halfway through that number, Garfield's character pushes one of the diner's walls outward - a touch of magical realism that would point to a crescendo in the number's energy. Instead, that wall is gently lowered and the cast merely stand on it and sing, turning the platform into a stage, with the climactic moment of the whole thing being a composite crane shot where 70% of the screen is dead space with nothing happening in it. It's wasted potential - both the number and the movie itself.

I mean to be fair, the musical is based off of a one-man show which Larson himself performed in the early 90s.
A lot of it has to be interpreted because there really is no laid foundation for what was otherwise just a humble show

    • @jessicasevin1870

I feel like this movie kept the feel of the musical in it instead of trying to turn the musical into a movie. The Sunday brunch scene felt like a morph into a dream state and being in the mind of the daydreamer

Do you two get together and decide you're going to have the same review before you record it? What a disappointing mess of a review (let's just consider it the same review). Alonso, I don't care about the jello salad b.s. That's not a review! Sure, Larson sacrificed relationships and opportunity to become a successful composer, but damn, what a sad story! That's the point. Think of what all that sacrifice and dedication could have produced other than "Rent?" And you say nothing about that, or his relationship with Robin de Jesus!!! Dear God! This was a hugely touching film!

I mean the point of the movie is that people feel like they need to succeed as young as possible and that they are constantly running out of time. I mean I’m in my early twenties and I constantly feel like I’m somehow behind schedule which is why I related to Larson’s journey in this film. The movie isn’t saying that if you’re over thirty you’re done it’s actually saying the exact opposite of that but how people often feel that way.

The, "getting your cake and eat it too," critique doesn't make much sense to me. Because all the relationships he strains and the ppl he pushes aside are ultimately for nothing. The conclusion is that it was all a useless thing, and sometimes simply being super creative isn't enough to make your dreams come true.
I think the movie definitely is anti-Larson and his treatment of friends for "his art". Not sure where that critique comes from.
EDIT: Very surprised about this review. No mention of the visual energy on display or even the really tactile cinematography and feeling like a real NYC movie. I thought they'd at least talk about some of the numbers in more detail. Especially the Garfield/ Hudgens one about a fight Larson has with his girlfriend. And I hate musical theater, but I was really taken by the earnestness and energy of the whole thing. Garfield is so good in this.

Could not disagree with this review more. You don't need to be a theatre kid or musical fan to appreciate this film. Also, you are so wrong about the pacing, Lin used the songs to enhance the pacing and juxtaposition between the story and dramatic moments,
Something that most movie musicals are terrible at doing, but he absolutely nailed it. for example: cutting between the break-up scene and the performance of Therapy was absolutely genius.
The playful magic you refer too could also be seen in "No More" and parts of "30/90", so I really don't understand where you're coming from.
Lin actually played the role of Jonathan in the 3-man show of TTB so he knows the script, so i think it's wrong to assume he let Jonathan off easy.
I could say lots more, but I won't, coz this review is just all kinds of nonsense.
Lin was the perfect person to direct this movie because he knew the material, and knows how to create and pace a stage show, which most movie musical directors have no clue, so when they try and adapt a stage show for film it just looks like they tried to copy it.
Tick Tick Boom is the gold standard of how all movie-musicals should be made in the future as sfar as I'm concered.
I could say lots more, but I won't, coz this review is just all kinds of nonsense.
