  • Helimah's friend contacted me and asked if I could interview her. The friend said Helimah was going through a rough time living homeless in Los Angeles. Homelessness is challenging, but life on the streets seems to be worsening while at the same time it's harder to get support to get out of homelessness.
Helimah and I spoke on the phone a few times. Unfortunately, she was in crisis where she was parking and had to move. When she finally found a safe place to park, I drove down to meet her. Helimah is working on getting a Venmo or PayPal. As soon as she does, I will post it here and in the comments. UPDATE: Here is Helimah's GoFundMe gofund.me/f7040b45
Helimah has been homeless for almost a year. After her mother died, the landlord doubled rent, so after trying to live with other people, Helimah took her pandemic unemployment money and bought an RV.
One of the biggest challenges of mobile homelessness is finding a safe place to park. One of the biggest challenges for all of us is finding people we can trust, and often homeless people are in survival mode. Helimah found herself in wrong locations connected to people who were gang members or just out for themselves.
Although still in crisis, Helimah has found a better place to park. She can now leave her RV to go fund support and even work if she can find employment.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn't just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I see the solution to many problems would be a universal basic income (UBI) of $1000 per month paid to everyone over eighteen tax free for life. People would not receive a UBI in jail. Mental illness and addiction have a genetic cause but what causes the most problems is antisocial personality disorder which is basically an inability to feel anxiety so they have little or no conscience. To pay for a UBI we will need to introduce a value added tax which would tax human and machine production equally.

You can't leave the RV to go to work because you will come back to something missing and sometimes they don't even get inside to take things some old RVs or motorhomes have the batteries for the living area in a compartment on the outside and the thieves love taking batteries and it's very hard on us when they steal those or anything at that matter. Living in an RV means she is no longer homeless! She owns a house that happens to be on wheels. Congratulations to her!!! I went last year this time from 17 yrs of chronic homelessness to renting a huge 3 br 2bth house. I think she is doing better than I honestly because she Owns her space. That is my goal this year. I am Curran looking to get an RV for myself. I don't want to live in SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROPERTY anymore. I WANT MY OWN

I’ve known Halema since the 90s.. when she was in a good place in life. I’m absolutely devastated at what has happened to her. She has a heart of gold… living out in a tent in Culver City? At 63!! No help no matter how many calls I’ve made! No case worker outreach! She needs housing stability in order to get out there and work. I don’t live in LA but if anyone out there can get her help and housing i would be so thankful. She really is a good person.

I'd stop when the RV broke down or when I ran out of money and find another safe place to park and work again. Just keep moving like that slowly until I was away from large cities and in the climate I wanted to live in. And, yes, that RV is for sure gonna break down or need tires! Omg! The biggest difference between our situations I think is that 35 years ago there weren’t instant credit checks. 35 years ago an apartment could be rented by filling out an application and asking the landlord to trust your character. I can really relate to her. The hardest thing to learn in life was not to trust the wrong people. Women are taught we should take care of others and that we’re not good people if we don’t. I do still believe that people are sick, not bad. However, if you’ve got goals and healthy interests like this lady, you won’t make it happen being around people who can’t see past today. If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else. If you’ve got a big heart and goals, keep to yourself and you could help the whole community, or even the whole world. I know women who have done it. Two opened social service agencies, and one changed the laws about violence against women at the UN conference. If you can survive on the streets you can go far, but you gotta go by yourself, THEN give back. I hope the RV works out and she has that life she deserves!
