Brenda is 60 years-old, she worked for 35 years, she is a college graduate, and she sleeps on the sidewalk of New York City.
I was a little shocked when Brenda told me she sleeps right here on the streets of New York City. With all the people walking by and the noise, I cannot imagine finding comfort enough to close my eyes. But for Brenda, that's where she feels safe.
When Brenda lived in San Diego, she was entering a bus, and the driver didn't see her got on. When the driver moved the door to take off, Brenda was knocked to the ground. Then when the driver pulled away, her leg slammed into the steel door.
Brenda was seriously injured. An ambulance took her to the hospital, but the accident was not reported with the proper protocol. Brenda then started legal proceedings and filed a lawsuit. The lawyer that was recommended to her wasn't honest, and the case never went anywhere. The judge dismissed the case and told Brenda she has every right to sue, but she would have to start all over again.
Brenda now receives $720 a month from Social Security, and that's not even close to enough to afford a place to stay.
At 9:26 I ask Brenda what she would want people to know about homelessness. She shares about how people are judgmental even about her wearing lipstick. Whenever I post a video with a woman that is trying to take care of herself by wearing makeup, lots of people freak out. They have a hard time understanding that homeless women still have the self-worth and decency to look presentable.
Most people that are experiencing homelessness do not look homeless. There is little to no education focused on teaching the general public the true realities of homelessness so people hold on to a lot of misconceptions.

That is not true. More and more women are homeless. BTW, we do not cherry pick stories.
Invisible People The one main reason I would like to be interviewed is to let everyone know what happened to me when the courts try charging me for my friends death when I was in the hospital when he was alive and was still in the hospital when people found him dead and he never died from what I was being charged with so now I was scared and they was threatened me saying I would go to prison for life as I was looking at 2 life sentence and a 20 year felony now I have a felony on my record and can't find a place to live as everyone does a background check nowadays. And yet social security punishes disabled people on SSI and treats then like shit like there on welfare, if your disabled social security takes out 1 dollar for every 2 dollars you earn ,when they shouldn't , you should be able to make as much as u want , you can't have over 2,000 in savings, you can't get married Because then they count your partners income and the maximum federal benefit rate is only 750.00 a month smfh , when it should be at least 1800.00 a month, if social security adjusted SSI for the cost of home prices and rents , and not just food and basic transportation,then you have the developers not building enough affordable housing, so we're in a crisis with low supply to much demand smh , the government needs to do better and take care of our people, starting off with a jobs program to hire random workers to be trained to build affordable housing, and market rate housing , we can no longer depend on developers anymore to help out the poor, middle class and disabled !!! Poor lady =[ , this is not a way for this country to treat the disabled at all , it's very sad ,

84% of families experiencing homelessness are female-headed. This is due to a number of factors:
Most single-parent families are female-headed (71%). Single-parent families are among the poorest in the nation and as such, are extremely vulnerable to homelessness

Hello folks, Well Hallelujah, I made it to PA and now I have my N.Y. i.d. I will leave N.Y. early Monday, stop at PA. Check on apt and if not, head back to San Diego. And buy a van and be a hippie. Yep!!!!
Love all of you, some nice man brought me a beautiful warm jacket, and I so needed it. Appreciating. I am so excited. I do hope the apt is ready. But I will do what I have to do. Either way I will be off of the sidewalk. Pray for me. And I cant thank everyone enough. You remind me that there are good people out there and it is easier to be nice than not nice. SO happy!!!!

There aren't many places to go for help in San Diego. We've been turned away from every place we went to for help. San Diego is unaffordable for the homeless and working poor which is why many are leaving. Unless you're an illegal, you don't stand a chance of making it here. I hope you get that apt in PA.

This is one of the strongest women I have seen.
How can the system be so flawed that an educated articulate woman who worked her whole life ends up without support after becoming disabled? So glad to hear that she is homed and being helped. So candid and spirited I hope you write that book Brenda, Cheers!💙
Unfortunately this is all too common. Disabled folks are treated like subhumans by the system in the USA. People who cannot work, who qualify for disability benefits and badly need them, are denied many times. And even if you get them, they lock you in poverty because you can lose your benefits if you make just enough money to be above the poverty line, or have too much in savings. Something needs to change.

I just watched your story... people are very ego based and ignorant and selfish and society today is all about survival of the fittest. People have no idea about certain difficult times unless they have experienced it themselves...
Not many will lend a hand to help these days. Gotta be greatful and thankful for those that lend their helping hand. Your a strong vibrant woman Brenda! Besides, does everyone remember that when someone is being filmed for broadcast, they HAVE to wear a little makeup? The people filming her may have given her the makeup so she wouldn't look like a very ill zombie, which is how anyone looks on film with no makeup...

@@luminescent__ I am in the right frame of mind to write it;, and I like being alone where I live. The neighbors gossip all day and night, talk terrible of one another. It is the perfect place to shut yourself in and write a book. focus, But I have to get a biopsy on my right boob. I will do it later, I have to return to ny in august and take care of the fake ticket I received.

My body just keeps breaking, literally, knee. Leg bones like I'm made of glass. But I got a family to help me and I thank God every single day for every second of the day. Bless you
@@reenym3577 I liked you comment. I am happy that you have a family to help you, but God knew I did not. I am okay with that and I understand some things just are not under out control. An injury that happens from someone else doing it. Injustice in the Superior Court System, not the Judge, but the Lawyer. It was dismissed without predjustice but I never signed off on anything.

Brenda , I'm so happy to see someone having faith in the Lord. I have an interesting story as well. I was homeless for a few months after my husband died in 2003 , but fortunately I had friends to stay with during that time. I had a home , but was slowly losing it , and everything else. I couldn't afford the propane for my heat , or any of my other utilities. I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis , and worked until I could no longer do so. It took me a couple years to get my disability. It's such a long story , but God pulled me through it. I kept trusting in him , and he sent a 76 year old Godly woman to become my mentor. She helped me in getting closer to the Lord. This woman ( Miss June) had several gifts of the Holy Spirit. I LITERALLY had God hug me using her arms , and speak to me using her voice. I had just cried out to him the night before and told him that I wished he could hug me. He did! He wanted to comfort me. He is amazing! I had a nervous breakdown back then. Anyway , I was patient , and trusted him. He helped me to keep my house , and I am about to sell that one , and buy a new one. (Big enough for my sister and mother , who have it hard.) I'm so happy that you are doing better. Keep trusting in the Lord. He can make the impossible happen. Don't listen to the devil. He is a liar! He wants to take our faith , and make us believe that God is not going to help us. God is ALWAYS with us. He said he would never leave us or forsake us . He don't lie! I love him more than anything. Take care my friend , and dream big! , because we serve a big God! Love you! ❤

I too was in an accident on May 5, 2015 and I’m still waiting for any kind of compensation whether it’s in California or New York these attorneys are so shady when it comes to personal injuries, it’s disgusting and I still have lower back issues and a bad knee from the accident. You have no idea until you walk in someones shoes what homelessness is really all about. You struggle everyday and jump hurdles and then new ones and more. Bathrooms, hygiene, mental health, social existence, food, hunger, sleep depravation, patience, stability, confidence, comfort, joy, YOU HAVE NO IDEA. BUT I MIGHT WRITE THAT BOOK.

Hi Brenda my name is Norman and I am homeless in st Joseph Missouri I've been homeless for probably 6-8years I get SSI about$800 a month which isn't enough to move into a place and pay the deposit and utilities nobody will work with me on the deposit otherwise I would be able to pay the rent. I just took a 5 day trip to PA and the manager said the person that is having their apt renovated is in the apt that I will get. As soon as she returns to hers, I can move in.

I am a college educated woman and have worked my whole life. Through a series of unfortunate events that were beyond my control, I ended up homeless. That was 6 years ago. I am no longer homeless and I have a great life. I helped myself out of that situation. Brenda, you are awesome!!!

I have done volunteering for the homeless in the past and most of people dont have a clue wy and how you can find yourself living in the streets. They judge so easily. Its a shame. I am extremely blessed and got my life back. So happy and pray for all the other people less fortunate. I can't see my life any other way now. I never took anything for granted but I know some things are not always under your control. I made some delicious nut rolls. Meeting nice neighbors. Appreciate all things. Have a good one.

Travis Rabble ...My property taxes and insurance are such a small amount compared to paying rent or a mortgage...The average rent or mortgage where I live is $1800-$2200 monthly.....which is close to what I pay for the year.....And half the year I rent out half my house to a friend who is a seasonal worker.....and that pays for the taxes....got to keep it simple
The justice system didnt screw her over. She had bad luck but she should have looked into the lawyer she chose. Then the lawyer ended up being bad and she needed to file new paperwork for a new one but she chose not to because she had a lot going on. But at the end of the day she needed to set priorities and get the paper done to sue. Then she would have money.
