I didn't realize such a diverse talented actor Paul McCrane is until he portrayed Dr Romano. Inside his tough exterior lies a soft, gentle human being. I remembered watching such episode where he has opportunity to show his human side after he lost his arm. Thank you Paul for giving us such a 3-dimensional character. And I can't believe that was 22 years ago. From an actor saluting to your ingenious performance.
It proved he was drunk when he tried to take that swing. Who does that while operating on your own patient? Breaking steeile technique, being distracted from a life saving procedure, etc.
I loooove Benton so much. I didn't appreciate him when I first watched the ER, when I was in my 20s, but now I can see this was a character that was excellently written.
I can't remember the episode and that has always bothered me, but there's an episode after Mark dies and Corday is an absolute wreck and won't/can't do any surgeries. But eventually she calms down enough to do one and we see that Romano is behind the glass watching her, happy she got back in the saddle. It was a nice moment that I'd love to see uploaded
Season 7 Episode 12 - Surrender Mark is still alive during that scene. Corday was having doubts about her ability after rushing through a surgery to go on a weekend trip with Mark but the patient developed complications and become paralysed. The patient sued but Corday was cleared of any wrongdoing. However, after it was dropped they saw each other again in the lift and the patient reminded her of what she did, which is what causes to freeze during surgery.
@@bilalahmed363 Peter Benton has the respect of the whole hopsital, as a doctor it doesn't matter how accomplished you are, if you're an awful person and don't have the respect of you're colleagues then forget it. The former chief of surgery tried going against Peter and failed because of how great a surgeon Peter is.
He better be thankful Benton stopped him from operating on that guy because if he would have f**ked up the surgery while intoxicated he would have been buried under the jail instead of under a destroyed helicopter.
I'm in medical school and I know guys like this that my colleagues would give their right kidney for, just to get a chance to report them to the board for blatant misconduct.

In my experience, I have seen problem doctors quietly go away. Most state nursing boards have stricter penalties and discipline programs than state medical boards. You can find your state's info under state boards/department of occupational affairs.
Wouldn't Romano operating drunk be a bigger deal than Peter operating solo? At least Peter could say he started to keep the patient alive until an attending showed up.
Tbh, peter would not have even need an actual BAL. A urine tox screen that shows alcohol would be enough to do in an attending who's supposed to be on call. Still awesome and well played

If the patient is already on the table and rapidly declining, Why wasn't Romano already there? Benton probably save the guys life while Romano was drinking. The nurses and anesthesiologist basically gave Benton permission to get started because there really wasn't any other option at that point. Did Romano actually ever face the consequences of his actions for this one?
Benton is too nice. Id let him go to the board and do his little write up and then expose his blood alchol level and bring those witnesses and hed be gone. I hated romano. He was the best surgeon but did unessecary things like this and was arrogant.

Not when you’re a licensed medical staff working in a facility. They can take your blood, piss, hair, whatever when you’re suspected to be under the influence of something. It’s a safety thing
