This video is about How to Rig Slow Pitch Assist Hooks - Benny Ortiz Style. I have learned since the video that Benny actually secures his solid ring with a Palomar knot (rather than the traditional Triple Cat's Paw shown here). Both methods work great - just make sure you use a longer piece of cord if you want to use the Palomar method.
While this is not the traditional method for tying slow pitch assist hooks, this method WORKS and this hook is much more durable than any traditional pike or spade eye hook I have personally used. West Central coast of Fla., just getting into slow-pitch jigging for Red and Mangrove Snapper, and Red, Black and Gag Grouper as my main target species, fishing long-range headboats to the Fla. Middlegrounds. Bennie’s seminar videos are excellent, but as a long time fly and jig tyer making assist hook rigs is a natural progression, to make high quality, custom setups and save some serious $$$. Thank you!

We catch tons of fish in the northeast with ring eye hooks. Also we drop anywhere from 20g to 400g and anywhere from 15ft to 100+ft

Venice is off the chain for SPJ. Have been down there recently...going down again soon. It is LIGHTS OUT.
If you head down there, I highly recommend Captain Eddie Burger of Fish Venice Charters. Eddie is well versed in the technique...he understands the dynamics and the challenges of fishing rigs and bottom structure with light gear. He runs a 39' Contender and knows how to drive a boat. He has 10,000 spots and he will put you on fish all day long. Highly recommended.
I went to a hobby store to find quality super glue and they pointed me to the BSI (Bob Smith Industries) glue and it's by far the best I've used. They had an entire shelf of all the different options but I use the blue top like you showed and the pink top which is a tiny bit thicker but I use it on nail knots on wind ons if I'm not serving. I haven't seen anyone else use it in a video but I'm glad you did and that it's out there for people to see. It's far and away better than any spectra adhesive I've used that's marketed to fisherman. It's also cheaper and you're right the little bottles last forever.

@@masteringrodbuilding absolutely. The hobby RC car/truck and airplane guys swear by the BSI products and they take it very seriously. I believe from my little research that the InstaFlex was developed for RC Truck tires. It's just a damned good product, I hope people give it a try.

I use JM hooks mainly but the VMC 7264 is made for assist hooks and pretty easy to find in the US. It's not cheap at $1.50/hook but it's a great hook. Comes in smaller sizes also, I like the 3/0 in particular it's a great 40-80g jig hook. The 5/0 is a great all around hook and the bigger ones are also great. Reminds me a lot of the JM Monster hooks in bigger sizes.
Jeff are you using the pre-tied/pre-assembled VMC assist hooks? Or are you able to find the bare hooks in the US? I've been trying to find the 7269s with ZERO luck...
@@masteringrodbuilding the slow pitch 7269 I also can't find as an individual hook, and as I'm sure you have I've searched. But the 7269 has the same issues you discussed with a lot of the slow pitch hooks. The 7264 though, which is designed for assist hooks, you can buy on eBay and it's sent from a shop called Chaos in Florida. It's more of a round bend wide gap hook like you're using but you wouldn't need to do any modifications to it. It's more of a vertical jig hook than a traditional slow pitch hook, but it seems like you're moving away from the slow pitch shape anyways so I think the VMC 7264 is a better option than having to close the eye and bend it like the hook your using. Worth a look at least. You can also buy the JM violent slow pitch hooks, which have the slow pitch shape, on Amazon from a company called Evike that's based in California. Usually takes about 5 days to arrive to me and I'm on the east coast. Evike sells more airsoft stuff than anything ha but randomly also carries the JM products that I use. I've done a lot of searching so figured I'd at least let you know what I've found.

Awesome video! I've started making my own hooks but am having trouble getting the hooks to face each other once I'm done. Any tips on how to get them to face each other? This video has helped me a ton and I really appreciate the way you walk through the process!

So, as a final step I hang the ring from a knot puller (you can see this at the 26:41 mark) or I actually put the ring in my fly tying vise and just pull and twist until you get the hooks facing each other. Once they are right I glue them and lay them out in the correct shape to dry. You can also watch TotosJAS' excellent video...at the 9:20 mark he shows you what I mean.

Great tutorial, very helpful. Do you ever find fraying at the eyelet against the end of the cut wire on the hook? Any advantage in solid eyelet hooks?

I should have known a detailed expert would ask a detailed, expert question. Yes - you DO get fraying of the cord against the end of the hook eye wire/the cut wire. It happens regardless of how well you close the hook eye or what assist cord material you use. So if two hooks are identical and one has an open eye or gap (likes these) vs a solid, welded eye - I think solid eyelet is a huge advantage. Obviously the rest of the hook has to have all the other properties and traits you need in the hook.
All that being said, my personal experience is that some other element of the assist hook assembly - either the hook itself or the cord between hook and solid ring - experiences failure long BEFORE this hook eye fraying is significant. At least with the kevlar cord I use. I realize that's sort of a lazy answer, but I've never been broken off or cut off and reeled in the entire cord to the hook...if that makes sense. And I have not had good luck finding a high quality closed/welded eyelet hook small enough to replace these. No problem in larger singles...but these tandems in the 2/0 - 4/0 size...welded eyes seem scarce. So if you know of some clue me in! Thanks!
Back again for a refresh this year, again awesome video. Here's the deal, first time last year in about 200' of water off the coast of Corpus Christi the current was really too strong for my 200 and 250g jigs. I'm going to try 350-400 varying profile, slimmer in the 300-350 and wider in the 400 range. I really think the Hitena #40 320lb Kevlar Core line is too small for my 9/0 assist hooks on my 400g jigs. So going up to their largest size #60/360lb sounds ideal but their manufacturing is down and the response from them is 6-9 months out. Now the Attwood Micro cord is about the same diameter as the Hitena KC #40 that I have so I went digging for a larger dia Atwood Micro cord and they don't make it. So, to this end, can you recommend an alternative cord that is close to the Hitena #60? Thank you.

I'm late to the party, great video and detail, very helpful. Going to be trying this slow jigging thing up here in the northeast and see how it works out. Had one question, why do you need the solid ring and not just use a split ring ? so in the end, connecting a split ring to a split ring.
Try it...it will work. I don't even know where in the Northeast you are but I'm confident it will work!
So...couple reasons NOT to use a split ring for both. Split rings - for size - are weaker than solid rings. Much, much weaker. A solid ring like the ones I'm using in the video (5mm - 5.5mm ID and 7mm - 7.5mm OD) break at like 200# pounds. Split rings the same size straighten out at 90# max.
In addition, remember that once you hook a fish the cord will flatten and move under load. The cord can very easily open the split ring and work itself out. The cord can also be damaged by the ends of a split ring. This simply cannot happen with a solid ring.
Ultimately you can try split ring to split ring, but it is the wrong tool for the job in my opinion. Your connections - split ring to split ring - will be much weaker than my solid ring to split connection. And by going split to split, you have now not just one but TWO weaker rings that can also accidentally open on you. So I would never, ever use split ring on the cord or go split ring to split ring.
There's a reason you never see lures or plugs built with multiple split rings...and that's it. It just doesn't work. But that's just my opinion based on my experience...do what you want. But test it first...pretty sure you will be very unhappy.

Thanks for watching...please like and subscribe! If you wanted a larger hook for tying double assists, I'd recommend the VMC Techset 7269 Heavy Duty Saltwater Assist hook. Both the 6/0 and 7/0 size are much larger than the 4/0 Gamakatsu 510 and they are very sharp and strong.
However, if I go any larger than the 4/0 510 I go with larger single hooks on both ends. instead of the double assist hook set up. And I do this almost exclusively in water deeper than 400' for what its worth. I currently use a lot of pre-tied single hooks because very good ones are available. The hooks I like are the JYGPRO 4/0 Single Assists or Gamakatsu 620 Ringed HD Assist hooks in either 6/0 or 7/0. You can find the JYGPRO hooks at this link (and don't let the 4/0 size fool you - they are plenty big enough for anything that eats a jig):

Hey Jumaane - Thanks for watching! The largest packs I am able to find them in is a 25 pack. Even Gamakatsu would not sell them to me in larger packs than 25. So I have been getting mine at Shark River Mail Order...you can find them via Google.

You can of course get them at a local tackle store - Johnny Jigs, JDM Slow Jigging/Reel Deal, JYGPRO all have good solid rings. Spro and Owner rings are excellent in quality and consistency.
If you want them in bulk, I have had good luck with 50 and 100-packs on Ali Express under the store names Bimoo, Countbass, and Funadaiko. You generally want a ring with a 7.5mm OD and 5 mm ID give or take...usually a size 5 or 5.5 but sometimes 4 or 6. Check the detailed specs and don't buy without them.
But buyer beware - I have bought lots of very reliable rings this way and have occasionally gotten batches of absolute garbage this way. That's what you get when you deal direct with China. So, you need to test them before you use them. Tie them up and pull them to destruction (if you can).
If you get a bad batch you gotta just throw them away. Caveat emptor. Hope this helps.

If you want to buy them in bulk quantities, I have had good luck with both BiMoo and CountBass from AliExpress. You typically want what they call a size 5, but the key dimension is an inside diameter of 5mm - 5.5mm. This typically means an OD of about 7.5mm. Hope this helps.

I generally use SPRO Power Split rings in Size 5 (90#) or Wolverine Triple Rings in Size 5 (135#). I really like the Owner Hyperwire HD rings but have had multiple instances where the jig is just gone using them. So I only use the SPRO and Wolverines now...SPROs are much easier to find and come in a bulk 50 pack. Hope this helps.

Both are available on Amazon...the SPROs can be purchased in a 50-pack. For solid rings I don't really have a brand preference but use rings with a size 5 or 5.5mm ID and a 7 - 7.5mm OD (usually called a size 5 or 5.5 but varies by manufacturer). The Bimoo or CountBass brand you can buy in bulk from AliExpress have worked well for me so far. I do NOT recommend the Chinese split rings.

But the key is that they are heavy duty, parallel jaw pliers and have grooves intended for crimping that are perfect for closing hook eyes. The most similar I have found are the Penn Parallel Jaw Pliers:

So, I have used them both with and without tinsel. It seems like some days the tinsel does help. And on other days, the jigs without tinsel work better. So you just have to try them out and see what works. I always have some of both ready to drop.
I will add one note of caution...a jig with tinsel assists will fall more slowly than a jig with plain assists. This really only seems to make a meaningful difference in deep water (like 600 feet plus) but it is noticeable. So just keep that in mind...often slowing your rate of descent doesn't help you when going deep.

Now this video is 3 years old, have you made any changes to the way you tie your assists since then? Or maybe found different hooks? I'm currently using Hayabusa Live Bait hooks (ringed) and Owner Cultiva Cut Hiramasa hooks (plated).
Great video and very informative. What's the purpose of behind the eye back? Wouldn't blending it forward cause more hookups since it would cause the hook point to go inwards, like how you tie for circle hooks?
So...bending it out keeps the shank of the hook in line with the assist cord and doesn't close the hook gap any. To be clear I've never tried bending the hook inward, but I'd be concerned it would close the gap some. You could always try some and see. I can tell you for sure they work really well tied this way.
I just asked the same question. Maybe try just straight eye?

Really helpful I tied 3 sets this morning with teasers but will tie future assists this way - way more symmetrical. 1 question though. Ive heard it argued that a straight eye (unbent) rigged just as you have, will allow the cord to torque against the top of the eye aiding in a better hookset. What do you think? Unbent may affect the way they hang though (kicked inward). Any experience 1 way or another with this?

So...you caught me being lazy. I have NOT tried both bent and unbent. I was kinda skeptical the first time I tried them but I went straight to bent eyes based on Benny Ortiz's experience. And I have to say I was delighted with how they performed. Perfect. So why tinker?
But tinkering is half the fun and that's how Benny got here anyway. Here's what I would do - tie up some of both, fish them both, and then let us know your experience. That's really the only way to know.
I would say this - if you go straight eye method I'd definitely come through the eye from the hook point side...to torque it the correct way. Hope this helps...would love to hear your findings.

Hi very interesting video. I saw thst there's also a 0.75 kevlar nano cord (100lb) will work as assist cord or is too small? Better move to 1.18 micro cord? Both are available in EU and that's great suggestion due the price of specific assist cord.

I have never used that cord you are describing but I'd suggest you get some and give it a try. If it is easier to get and cheaper, than it might be perfect for you. 100# sounds pretty light for the abrasion resistance you want...maybe try the heavier size?
Just remember if the cord you select doesn't stretch like this cord I'm using in the video, you may need to adjust the length of the section you start with to get the right finished length. Hope this helps...good luck!

So...I'm a custom rod builder. I have literally built SPJ rods - in no particular order - on CTS, Thrasher, Temple Reef, Artico, Matagi T-Russell, Black Hole, Phenix, and several Chinese import blanks. My favorites on the water so far are the CTS and Thrasher. Phenix and Black Hole also nice. I have not yet fished the Artico, Temple Reef, or Matagi. Most of the Chinese imported blanks are turble. At least the dozen or so I have tried.

I've watch a fair number of videos and I think you mentioned a barrel swivel to connect to the solid ring. Can you explain your main line, to leader to top solid ring assist hooks? lb-test, type of line, length of leader, knots used, swivel or no swivel? I want to target grouper (red snapper is out of season until Jun. 1. Thanks.
Thanks for watching - please like and subscribe! So...SPJ will work where you are. It works extremely well out of Galveston and Port Aransas. Heck it works everywhere. My only warning is good luck getting a jig to those Grouper through all the highly endangered American Red Snapper. Last time I dropped jigs in Texas I never made it to the bottom. All. Day. Long.
My preferred set up is 20# Yo Zuri Super Braid main line connected to 50# Sunline FC System 100 Leader via a PR Bobbin Knot. An FG knot also works but is not as strong for me. I then use a TN knot to connect my 50# flour to a solid ring ball bearing swivel (typically size 5 or size 6 solid ring ball bearing swivel). You then connect your assist hooks and your jig to the swivel via a split ring - I like Wolverine Triple Wrap Size 5 split rings...size 6 for very large, very heavy jigs. For where you are fishing I'd connect a pair of assist hooks to both ends of the jig (4 hooks total). It really helps hooking the Triggers you will almost certainly encounter. I realize 20# braid seems very light but do it...it allows you to get so much action out of your jig. It just requires that you use a very good knot to join your braid to your leader. Don't even dream of something like a uni to uni - needs to be a PR Bobbin Knot, an FG knot, or at least a GT knot. Hope this helps!

@@motleypixel True that. Gamakatsu has discontinued them in their catalog so if you want them get them while you can. I begged and pleaded with them at ICAST...but to no avail. I have had really good luck with the VMC TechSet Heavy Duty Assist hooks as a substitute...no bending or closing the eye and very strong. 5/0 is preferred but 6/0 also works.
@@masteringrodbuilding 21:15 is two loop-to-loop connections better than one as well? I'm having a damn hard time doing 3. If 2 is better than one, then I may reserve 2 loops for my 80-120g jigs and then for my larger/longer jigs I am able to do 3. Thank you.
@@motleypixel hey Roy - two is definitely better than one. And two with super glue is probably fine. But I go 3 whenever possible. Just do the best you can. And remember that the largest grouper ever landed on a jig (as far as I know) was on 150g….

@@masteringrodbuilding Thanks. I've always bought Owner's 6.5; looking at the specs on both Bimoo and Countbass, they look almost identical. I found Best Fishing and their poundage for a similar size seems really exaggerated.

Hi Lawerence - thanks for watching. I appreciate the feedback. I use either SPRO Power Split Rings in size 5 or Wolverine Super Split Rings in size 5. Both are available via Amazon (and several other places). Hope this helps.

@@lawerenceduponcheel6805 I have used lots of solid rings...you want polished rings with an ID of 5mm...OD will typically be 7.5mm. The Bimoo store in Alixpress has good ones - size 5.

I got those from www.charkbait.com several years ago. Doesn't look like they sell them any more but I highly recommend the Cuda Large Braid Shears...they are spectacular. You can find them on Amazon, etc. Just watch your fingers!

Not sure...have never broken it. It's listed as 130 lb by the manufacturer.

The regular packs you can get lots of places. Usually the bulk packs are available on eBay. Google is your friend!
You probably won't read this I know it's a three-year-old video but is there a demand for the jigs themselves here I mean is there anyone making them Here other than just having an order of online from Japan or wherever so I'm here in Alabama appearing northern Alabama I do spend a lot of time down there in a Orange beach and salt water fishing but I've got access to a lot of free lead and do you think it would be worth my time to start making these jigs and selling them down there From what I can see could probably produce these jigs for a couple bucks a piece and then sell them for like $4, I only ask as I looked you up on your custom rod page there you do good work
So...you can't just make any old jig. They have to swim well and most importantly CATCH FISH. They have to be consistent. They need a quality finish.
You would have to make your own molds, etc - there are none (worth a damn) that I am awar of. But...IF you make a true slow pitch jig that works and it is well finished then yes I think there is a ton of demand. If you buy a do it mold and try to sell speed jigs as slow pitch jigs then in my opinion you will fail like so many others. You probably need to do some market research and see what you are competing against. But free lead is a great place to start...

Can you not just buy them from your tackle shops they are loor 2-3£ like 4$ so they aren't expensive?
Absolutely you can buy them. Here in the US they are scarce (very few shops carry them) and they cost more than that - like $10 USD per set of two (enough to rig one jig). And you have no control over the length. So by all means buy them if you'd rather. I personally prefer to tie them and can do so much more economically.
@@masteringrodbuilding I make my own feathers yet I can also buy them, I guess its more rewarding too when catching fish on something you made.
i am worried that these could get undone to easy with that knot. also why not buy super quality rings that are tested and high quality, they are not that expensive. there is a reason why the pros a buying and using that. sorry for the critic. i just have experience with buying not the best stuff and lost fish after heavy abuse. after that you wonder why you saved a couple of dollars and you might not have lost the fight of your life. ofcourse i do not know what species you are tageting but for extreme tropical i would pay that extra.
