I'm an interior designer, love you new home, so charming❣ Your beams will oxidize again after sanding & turn orange again, just the nature of pine to age & turn orange. - so in order to get a pale wood look you need to have your beams pickled, it is a type of transparent stain that has a white or cream base, it will keep your beams pale & you will still see the lovely wood grain & knots.
Hi Maddy, long-time follower here. I just wanted to comment on your "not having a break on the weekend". You say in the video that you should not vlog on the weekends because weekends are for a break, but then, just after, you mention that you are going to paint on the weekend. As much as I get the feeling of having projects done, painting on the weekend specially if you are going to vlog it is also work. Take time for yourself. As someone that is doing two studies at the same time I really understood the importance of having at least a complete day off (and I try to have two when I feel I can). Mental and physical health are a priority. Good luck with the renovations, lovely video like always!
Your house is already amazing. I so enjoy the realness of them. For instance, the laundry hanging up. There is nothing fake or phoney. You and Alex are truly authentic.
Don't worry about leaving the beds empty!!! It's better empty beds than with dying plants because it's too much too handle! At least they look better empty than with the weeds
Yes though I would say that planting a filler plant, like wild flowers or a grass or something actually is beneficial against erosion and occupies the soil so that weed seeds don't land in there and take over. Otherwise consider putting a tarpaulin over the beds to prevent weeds from growing.
If leaving beds empty a good idea is to sew seeds for what is called 'green manure' which is a plant that covers bare ground when not used e.g. field beans. Message me if you need any info xx
I wasn't sure I understood, but the rose beds with lavender and baby's breath are beautiful. The companion plants are perfect. The keep down weeds and hide the rose canes a bit when the blooms are done. You are lucky to have them already established.
I think even if that hot tap stays a bit brighter in color, the sink is a lovely focal place and definitely not an unnatural place in a kitchen to have something stand out a smidge. Love those knobs!
The woodlands you were walking through are so beautiful, pure heaven. Your garden right now is so beautiful with all the plantings especially the roses. You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful green environment.
Please consider putting in a small pond at the bottom end of the garden! it's incredibly beneficial to wildlife and will help increase the biodiversity of the garden :) Honestly, these homey-gardening vlogs are so lovely to watch. Thank you for the great content! Your home is beautiful :)
I agree with you about the pond. We had a washing up bowl with rocks in for a mini pond in our mini garden and we got loads of butterflies, damselflies and so on. A real pond would be amazing
Hi Madeline I love your beautiful blogs. Plant some wildflower seeds and cosmos in your beds that will bring in beneficial insects and bees that will be great pollinators for you garden. Love the beams but I do think overtime they will get dark again so consider coating with something that will keep them the color you like or even a light wash over them would give you that cottage feel. Roxy is adorable as I love the area you took your walk with her. 😘💐❤️🙏
I am amazed by all the work you do! I remember many years back that Martha Stewart would soak her brass door knobs in paint stripper to remove the clear lacquer, then they would develop an antique patina. Just a suggestion.
All parts of the lilies are toxic to cats. It's not worth the risk as even brushing past one, can be fatal. We don't have them in the house any more, even though I love them!
You can age brass a number of ways- using wine or vinegar or commercial aging solutions. It needs to be real brass and you need to remove the clear coat first, but in several hours you could have the look you want. There are instructional videos on youtube. It is easy.
I believe the metal won’t change color that much, especially compared to your lights - i think it won’t change and match in the end, lights are quite cool toned and faucet very warm gold... I’d say you need to make a decision as if it will never change the color at all, because it will be a disappointment for you to wait to become rustic and then it never will. Especially when kitchen metals usually are made to last, they shouldn’t change color in use, otherwise it’s considered faulty. If you don’t like the color - it’s probably better to find another alternative or maybe color it somehow. Although it’s beautiful faucet!
Magical woodlands look like a fairy tale , so beautful ,so relaxing, darling birds singing . Never seen Roxy so happy. Been watching your efforts for a long time. You are a good girl , Brava/ Bravo Alex. House and garden look stunningly beautful
My husband and I have renovated and restored 2 homes. One was a Cap Code style home and the other was a Mid century modern brick ranch. We learned that spending money on the infrastructure is the most important investment. It’s not glamorous that you have to re wire, re plumb, replace HVAC, replace windows and doors but those are the most important issues. The aesthetics come over time. Give yourself some Grace and patience.
Definitely recommend getting the pipes boxed in, it will instantly tidy up the look. Ask your carpenter to keep it as small as possible and trim the shelves to sit in front so that it is more easily hidden. You will definitely need to treat the beams or they will just turn orange again over time. Your kitchen is coming on beautifully.
Unfortunately, I don’t think anything will lighten the wood other than bleaching them. As for your tap, it doesn’t look like it is the type of fixture that will patina (looks color treated). If the color really bugs you, you might want to keep searching for an antique tap.
You have probably all ready sorted this, but if the brass has been lacquered it will stay bright brass. Unlacquered brass will age darker, likely darker than your lights. I think mixing metal colors will be fine. You sink is a focal point in front of the window.
I agree with you to try getting the beams one color. I’d first try the wood lightener. If that fails then slightly stain the light area to match the darker. Either way it’s going to look beautiful! I’m loving your DIY videos!❤️
tapes that are new are dry not full of water, you got a returned or a used one, however if it works it's lovely for your home, good on you where I am from taps cannot be returned if there is water in them. Still enjoy your kitchen reno. Love it.
As a New Yorker who’s lived in apartments with weird pipes jutting out in places 😂 I can tell you that they make fastener plates that go around a pipe and covers the hole in the wall. So you don’t have to “patch” it or box it in if you can’t. It’s a really easy solution and not only does it make it look nicer it also keeps bugs 🪳 out!
I have used a white ash wood stain to cancel out the orange hue on pine furniture before, not sure if it’d work with the beams but thought I’d chime in amongst the suggestions! Ps, I also have escape artist dogs, life is definitely less stressful now we have a secure fence. I think the dogs are more relaxed too now they know there’s no way out!
I sanded my old steps down to bare wood and they seemed very orange, not beautiful at all. I took white chalk paint and watered it down to a very thin consistency. Brushed it on the wood and then very quickly wiped it off. It turned out so beautiful. It looked as if I had bleached them. You remind me so much of myself. I totally “sweat “ all the details!!! They are so important because we know exactly what we want the end result to be. Love watching your channel. Good luck with the beams.
Loved seeing bits from your pottery class! I’m starting a ceramics degree in September and heading into a career as a ceramicist so I’m obsessed with all things pottery. Learning to throw is so hard!!! If you get a chance to try raku firing or even naked raku then do it, it’s the most fun I’ve had and the outcomes are beautiful.
Also the little alliums in your wooden planters look like the variety "drumstick" they're really lovely! Would be great planted up with some grasses and other perennials like salvias
If you don't fill all of your beds this year please don't feel guilty (I have the same thing with the allotment I got this year - it's massive and I can't sort it out all in one summer!) - just lay cardboard and leaves over the tops of the ones you're not using. That way you'll keep weed seeds off the soil and help the soil structure and fertility for next year. Plus, there are some things you can plant much later in the year for overwintering (see Jess at Plot 37's videos for what to sow). Some time as 'fallow' beds is good for them, especially in organic gardening!
Enjoying all your videos, you could paint the beams and ceiling wood at the Aga end the same colour as the paint youve chosen for the walls .In the dining area you could then just lighten the darker end of those beams.
when you get rid of the bamboo you can make a mini greenhouse/or gardening shack for all your tools, seeds, watering cans, feed, tonic, etc. as well as m maybe a bistro table and chair for th eoccacial champagne/tea in the kitchen garden
My tip would be to use a Liming beeswax on the orange pine, it will soften the look of the pine but will still let the wood breathe. I did this on my beams and it toned them down to a more subtle colour. Good luck
You said you love the woods, what about if you turn the end of the garden that isn't being used into a miniature wood and could plant lots of bluebells, snowdrops and other wildflowers with bird boxes in the trees! And what's in the nets at the side of the veg patch.
those "steel things" on the ceiling look like they could be drywall that were added to house the downlights. they could easily be taken off if thats sth you would think about. this way the beams would reach the outer walls which would help to calm the room tectonically speaking.
When you were talking about the exposed pipes in the kitchen and asking for advice, I was trying to find the words to express what I was thinking, and then you said "box it in" and I thought, yes, that's it! So, basically I am saying I agree with your method of resolving the issue! Hope it works!
Your new tap is lovely... If it is solid brass there may be a lacquer or varnish on it to keep it looking new & prevent it from developing an old patina. -you can remove the lacquer if your tap is brass, then it will age beautifully & blend in with your other antique brass fixtures.
The tap is great. It's like jewelry for the kitchen. If it's brass and the metal hasn't been treated with a clear finish, it will patina over time. Even though the kitchen beams are not as light as the others, sanding them has removed the blotchiness. Much better. (Eeeks! Using the pottery wheel with your engagement ring on).
Madeleine! The tap may well have a type of “varnish” on it that they applied so it maintains that particular colour. It really is gorgeous the way it is. As for the beams, you shouldn’t worry about them being a consistent colour as they SHOULD look old with a natural patina and not something that came out of a box. The wood is natural and will age the way it individually wants to. Don’t worry about being “matchy-matchy”. It looks cottagey and wonderful. Although I agree with other commentators that you ought to put something on them so they maintain this look. They will reverent to piney orange if left alone. I am so envious! You have so much energy and drive. You have inspired me. Thank you for these vlogs! (I am in love with .Roxie despite the fact that I am a cat person. Her wee face at the fence. Bless.
Good luck with the Bamboo! I recently learned from a youtuber (tokyo llama) renovating a house in rural japan that you should never plant bamboo straight into the soil because its so hard to get rid off. Also alot of em are really invasive. I think the european equivilant to that is mint once its out there it spreads like crazy
You have a great plan to get the flowers established. ☺️ Also you look fabulous! I wish I could afford organic basics cos they're so beautiful. But as for now I'm just thrifting most of my clothes.
I really like that lighter wood colour too, so would look into lightening as well. But I wouldn't paint that narrow bit on the last beam, and wouldn't paint the door either. I would sand the door and try to lighten it as well. And put little linen curtains on them. I imagine the curtains every single time you've showed that door lol.
If you're not opposed to "redoing" the faucet there are solutions with vinegar or something that you can use to age the brass if it's real ❤️ Love the direction you chose to go in for the kitchen by the way
Loving these vlogs! I would defo box in those pipes for nice tidy clean lines. That gunnera is stunning. When I go on this walk near mum’s, we’ve been monitoring the growing of some gunnera as they went from these tiny little things to humongous hints taking over the place. Magic! I wonder if they particularly love our Cornish climate. I have the opposite problem with clothes being such a shortie, crop length usually sit just on the ankle which looks ridiculous! And petite full length are sometimes too short 🙄
I think the finish on your kitchen lights are a brushed finished, that's probably why they're softer looking. Oh my goodness, I can see why Roxie loves that woods, it's magical looking, wonder if she sees fairies there =^)
At this point in the year, it may be better to wait to fill those other beds until august for fall crops. Otherwise you’ll get a bit stuck with timing and trying to grow younger tender crops in the heat. Love the coral color on you!
The large leafed plant down the bottom looks like Gunnera Manicata, also called "Dinosaur Food" thought to be over 150 million years old! Also mins your gardeners get all the bamboo roots out. It's a rhizome so any time piece of it left behind could result in the lot of it invading again! Looks great though, live the idea of a seating area there
Madeline your large plant is a Gunnera… I love it. Just starting on a tropical style garden in my small place your huge garden is gorgeous Enjoy I too have a Roxy best name ever 🤣💕💕💕xxx
My partner does the exact same thing with spice! I love spicy food but he loads on all the peppers imaginable. I like it I just find it overpowers all of the other beautiful flavours hahaha
Lovely video! So many things made me smile... Totally relate to all your gardening and doggie content, and I always try to take that first sip of tea just after I made it, the same issue with pizza, don't know why?! :)
You said at the end your fingers were tingling. Please don’t overdo the sanding. I had slight trouble with my hands for about two years after using a small sander and I didn’t do it for long. My nephew used a large floor sander a lot and ended up being unable to work for about a year. The beams look so much better.
My backyard is the backside of a Huge State Park has three different Lakes and many streams and wooden bridges you would Love it they offer many different options in camping 🏕 including group camping 🏕 sites .I am so Blessed to have thousands of miles of Woodland out my sliding glass doors
Roxy is the most beautiful spaniel I have ever seen! I have an American cocker spaniel - my fifth, and he is very handsome, but the English spaniel is much more slender and refined.
You can use an a/b bleach on the wood that lightens the color. It's a mix of sodium hydroxide (lye) and hydrogen peroxide. It works really well, and quickly, but you'll have to be really careful using it as it's extremely caustic. Do a test patch because it can really profoundly lift the color of the wood to almost white.
One option with the beams if you don't want to bleach them is to whitewash or limewash the ones in the kitchen and leave the ones at the other end au natural. It will not look strange because they are seperated.
Just be aware that it's not just the stamen of the lilies that are toxic to cats it's every part of the plant, I'm an out of hours emergency and critical care veterinary nurse and have lost count of the number of cats I've treated with lily toxicity 😥 xxxx
Kitchen will look so amazing finally finished I can’t wait My kitchen is like walking back in time 150 years lol 😝 I own a Beautiful Cape Cod style Cottage that’s a Antique all Wide plank wooded floors has eight Rooms small County Village of New Hampshire that overlooks the Monadnock Mountains 🏔
you can lighten the wood beams with lime wax to keep if from yellowing.. usually not vegan as most wax is not, but some furniture wax is actually vegan.. :) Ive seen posts about DYI lime wax with (non-vegan) wax and paint, because lime wax is expensive and hard to find some places.. so maybe its possible to make with vegan wax and paint too :)
It all looks lovely, but you may never get the beams to match, so maybe think about painting the newer beams at the north side white and the the older ones would be shown off beautifully….just a suggestion

Personally I would pop spots into your veg beds n carrots n cabbage. Than rotating next year just make live easy pumpkin are easy to grow to x

Yes making a wildlife pond is so easy! You can use any big bucket as long as you lay black insert to keep away algae and you use rainwater
We have a pond at the top so will be doing this and filling it! We will just have to use netting because of the cats 😬
@@MadeleineOlivia amazing! yep, cats will get into everything - mine certainly do! 😼
I feel like every time Roxie was shown, she was ready to steal the spotlight! What a cutie! 💕
She is a princess who needs to be the centre of attention hehe
The purple flowers in your bouquet are Alliums (easy to grow from bulbs) & the large, leathery plant at the bottom of the garden is Gunnera
I think the large leafed plant is Gunnera Manicata.
I think the tap will dull down if it is solid brass.... if it's painted a brass color it probably won't develop a patina. It is lovely though!
Hi Madeline I love your beautiful blogs. Plant some wildflower seeds and cosmos in your beds that will bring in beneficial insects and bees that will be great pollinators for you garden.

Your drying rack in the kitchen is so so cute
Red is definitely your colour!
Beautiful tubes
You can use avocado oil for the puffiness! It makes wonders
Cornwall is so insanely beautiful

I'm really enjoying following along with the progress you make DIY-ing your home, I like that we get to see a realistic timeline.
I think this every time I watch your videos. YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL. Your look, spirit and aura shines. Such a wonderful person, it shines through. 😊
I agree with you to try getting the beams one color. I’d first try the wood lightener. If that fails then slightly stain the light area to match the darker. Either way it’s going to look beautiful! I’m loving your DIY videos!❤️
Have a carpenter build some type of wood box covering for those pipes in your wall to cover them up.
I like the brass tap as it is. Very pretty ❤️

Roxie with the shoe! Oh my heart ♥️😍🥰
Purple flower Agapanthus❤️✨Box those pipes in. Oops, you got there yourself. Whitewashing the beams with a really dilute wash may work
If you're not opposed to "redoing" the faucet there are solutions with vinegar or something that you can use to age the brass if it's real ❤️ Love the direction you chose to go in for the kitchen by the way
This was great with my Morning Coffee here in the Mountains 🏔 of New Hampshire in America 🇺🇸
Two part expanding foam is useful for filling awkward holes like that.
your backyard is so lovely
Never been this early, congrats on the new clothes they look amazing. Garden plans are so exciting I cannot wait to see the final result ❤️❤️
Boxing in is the right solution for those pipes.
Hello, Hi! So excited for this video!!!!!!
Hope you enjoy!
Loving these vlogs! I would defo box in those pipes for nice tidy clean lines. That gunnera is stunning. When I go on this walk near mum’s, we’ve been monitoring the growing of some gunnera as they went from these tiny little things to humongous hints taking over the place. Magic! Maddie The tap will turn darker over time. The beams are old and you can't do much with the color. Besides it gives it character. ❤

Love love love the Organic clothes but very expensive for my budget
I agree! Love the idea but they are so expensive 😔
Build in the pipes, like a box 😀
personally love the look of the tap!
I am so envious. You live in a beautiful area.
I’ve used really watered down white emulsion paint to lighten wood , worth a try!
Yesss. I’ve been waiting for you!
Hehe enjoy!
Lol. You could bleach your beams 😄
I appreciate the spice life, I always feel like I'm adding yet another jalapeno every time I make chili...
B sắp xếp nhà cửa gọn gàng quá
Hey, you could bleach or white wash the beams in the kitchen. 🤗
I just love your videos ❤️
Thank you so much!
My backyard is the backside of a Huge State Park has three different Lakes and many streams and wooden bridges you would Love it they offer many different options in camping 🏕 including group camping 🏕 sites .I am so Blessed to have thousands of miles of Woodland out my sliding glass doors
Many people make the mistake of confusing hot with spicy. Love spices but, like you, cannot take a lot of heat.
Roxy is the most beautiful spaniel I have ever seen! I have an American cocker spaniel - my fifth, and he is very handsome, but the English spaniel is much more slender and refined.
Will creeping thyme grow there? I just love the purple look they have.
I understand you're in the woods in safe area
Why are you saying this?
You can use an a/b bleach on the wood that lightens the color. It's a mix of sodium hydroxide (lye) and hydrogen peroxide. It works really well, and quickly, but you'll have to be really careful using it as it's extremely caustic. Do a test patch because it can really profoundly lift the color of the wood to almost white.
One option with the beams if you don't want to bleach them is to whitewash or limewash the ones in the kitchen and leave the ones at the other end au natural. It will not look strange because they are seperated.
Great 👍 Job Madeleine looking awesome…..Conservatory Woods is gorgeous so enjoyed Thank You 🙏 Beautiful Soul xoxo 💋
Box it in with the ability to open if needed.hinges
The big plant is a gunera my husband's fab plant
It’s so stunning I love it!
House is looking great!! 😁
U can buy trousers at long tall Sally
The flower I think was an allium. Have a look at Farmer Gracy I think is the name
I LOVE the long vlogs! 💖
you can lighten the wood beams with lime wax to keep if from yellowing.. usually not vegan as most wax is not, but some furniture wax is actually vegan..
The big leafed plant is a Gunnera
