    Hi everyone! Hope you enjoy today’s video! Thank you for watching and just wanted to make sure everyone is careful because as it’s been pointed out by some of you, mixing bleach and vinegar can be very dangerous! I mentioned in the video to proceed with caution and I am doing these DIYs at my own risk! I didn’t show me using the vinegar and I haven’t actually used it yet, but please don’t mix bleach with vinegar in any way as the gas it produces is very dangerous. This method was shared by another UA-cam video where they recommended to allow the bleach to dry and then use diluted vinegar on a cloth to neutralise the process. Please be careful and use safety equipment, do your own research and don’t copy me because I am practising trial and error.

      Chlorine gas is potentially fatal to humans and animal and can contaminate the air and surfaces around it!!! Please do not use the vinegar unless you have rinsed EVERY vestige of the bleach from the beams probably with a power washer. Preferably use a paste of bicarb to neutralise the bleach.

    SAFETY COMMENT: Hopefully anyone wanting to try the wood-lightening reads this comment but be vary careful with vinegar and bleach- combined they create chlorine gas! I've never heard of this method of lightening wood but it sounds dangerous, take care guys

    • @HarleyQuaint
      @HarleyQuaint 3 роки тому +14

      Yes! This is terribly dangerous! It's cleaning 101 to never mix the two.

      @@HarleyQuaint I was thinking there's no way you're meant to use them together right?!

      @@emilymae8416 Honestly was expecting that to be the "gone wrong" part. Given chlorine gas is outlawed as a weapon because it's so dangerous... It really isn't something I'd want to risk in my kitchen!
      I've accidentally done it before, chucking a bleach soaked sponge I'd used into a clean sink I'd wiped down with vinegar. The smell and the immediate eye burning was terrifying. Don't even keep them in the same cleaning cupboard now!

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  3 роки тому +24

      This method wasn’t combining them but using bleach first, then allowing it to dry and stopping the bleach process by applying a diluted vinegar mix with a cloth. It acts as neutraliser! Though admittedly I haven’t used vinegar on the beams yet. But definitely don’t mix the two so thanks for sharing the above. As I said in the video, do these methods at your own risk and make sure to be very careful and do your own research as I am simply sharing as I go. Do not copy me but be careful!

    • @emilymae8416
      @emilymae8416 3 роки тому +16

      @@MadeleineOlivia The reason it neutralises bleach though is because it destroys the active ingredient (hypochlorite) and turns it into more dangerous chemicals- you definitely did the right thing with a mask and ventilation but it might be worth adding a safety note or something on the video? It's just as vinegar is like the worst thing to neutralise bleach, I just wouldn't want people who didn't know getting hurt

    It’s all about the experimentation when renovating. I would consider a liming wax, I think it would get you much closer to your desired colour. It creates a sun bleached sort of look, it’s really easy to use as well.

    If your electricians are coming in July discuss with them whether it is even worth painting before they come based on the type of work they are doing, you don't want to end up doubling up on work and wasting paint. If you are going to paint first make sure you have spare of your colour!

    The kitchen beams look good Maddie! ~ you may find that the colour variations even out weeks after you have finished the neutralizing with vinegar. Sometimes, after wetting, natural tannins in the wood will leach out and make it patchy looking for while so I don't think you should blame yourself!. These streaks could be absorbed back into the wood over time. So you may have to wait a couple of months to see how the woods eventually settles down before the finished result can be seen. I would also leave it at least a month before sealing the beams with a matt varnish ~ in order to allow these natural processes (which require air) to conclude :-)

    Hi Maddie. Freddy Cousins Brown has recently done a decorating vlog series for her new flat on her UA-cam channel, Breakfast a Freddy’s.
    Freddy successfully lightened some orange-pine wooden worktops in her kitchen - she tried a few products but eventually found something that worked and the worktops look beautiful.
    It might be worth checking out her vlog- it was one of the very early Moving vlog episodes.
    Hang on in there with the beams! You’re doing great! 💕

    I loved your questioning about love island :D I've never watched this as I don't live in the UK, but I could totally relate. Although my sleeping habits are terrible for various reasons, and it's so much more difficult to function despite this, now that I'm in my 30s. Also, when you should that it was 8 pm, I got so jealous (well, nothing terrible!) because I live. somewhere where in summer, it's dark by 7 pm... Proper dark... And it's so depressing, because it's still hot through the night, but you can't actually enjoy it, and of course, it's daylight by 4 am, which again, you can't quite do anything with, because life is still very much 9 to 5.
    I can't wait to see the changes in your kitchen! I love that you have the courage and motivation to try things out yourself, because you're right, in the end, there are plenty of things that we all are probably capable of doing :)

    Worth a try with bleach but bleaching beams is definitely going to be harder than bleaching furniture. I would try a lime wax in your test corner and see if that gives you the lighter, less orange look you want. Love your adventures in this beautiful home.

    Have you considered purchasing wood in a grain and color you like and nailing it to the existing beams? You could box them in, making them all the same size and color (variation in the grain and knots in the wood would give it character and if desired, you could ding them up to make them look older and more vintage). You could also conceal some of the wires that run to lights mounted to the beams or any possible holes. This could save you a lot of time and work and would give you the results you are after.

    Hey!! I love your videos and I started watching when you used to do a lot a eco-friendly and sustainability videos, and I've been wondering where you have gotten your new electronics, like the computer and other home appliances. I don't think you mentioned anything about buying them either second hand or new. Electronic waste is one of the worst things out there and maybe you could share a bit of your thought process between choosing what to buy

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  3 роки тому +3

      Lots of our new home appliances have been secondhand for example our smeg toaster and kettle! However the computer I bought recently was new. The reason we got this in particular new was because it was for work and went for the latest version of the Mac so it would work best for editing and everything I do online. I always weigh up the options and also prioritise secondhand first! Our cameras we film are secondhand and we are always considerate of electronic waste because as you say it is a huge issue. Any phone or laptop I’ve ever had has been passed on to a family member or sold for this reason.

    Wait, wait, vinegar and bleach? Please don't mix the two! I know the bleach is probably dry at that point, and the windows were open but I'm pretty sure bleach produces chlorine gas when mixed with an acid and that can be really dangerous... Please be careful! (I think maybe if you were to sand the beams again the drip marks might go, and the previous comment about mixing it with something to make a gel would make sense. Or maybe you could try painting it over with a very, very diluted grey/white paint? If it's diluted enough it might just look like lighter wood?)
