There’s definitely been a big united shift in the millennial mindset towards life, it’s pleasant to see people pursuing joy as well as essential material obligations now
I just watched for the first time. You are sooo genuine! Please don’t change and DON’T listen to the haters: they’re people who aren’t happy with themselves so how can they be happy with others. You have an amazing life: a beautiful home, loving animals, a great partner! You’re blessed. Stay true to your self and your life! Best wishes.
I'd say those beets were sown over a year ago. Beets are biennial meaning that they will flower in their second year of growth (you can leave them to do this so you can collect seed for future years sowing). You would want to he sowing and harvesting in the same year for eating as they can go woody once they start to bolt (set seed). You could absolutely sow more beets, cabbage (you would be sowing autumn varieties now), pakchoi, kohlrabi, broccoli, fennel, etc. Great to see you out in the garden again!
I always use lavender to make fragrance bags - putting the flowers in old socks or stockings or reusable tea bags, and then putting them with the fresh bedsheets or my clothes. You can also mix with rose petals, camomile flowers, mint, yarrow, vervain, what ever dried plants smell good to you. Also, don’t listen to people criticising your content. It’s wonderful, and you are so real and authentic! That’s why we all are here 🤗 Haters gonna hate whatever you do.
I do that as well ... also when I come in, take my shoes off I sprinkle lavender powder onto the footbed ... my shoes never smell like feet! and I sprinkle in a rather carefree manner which causes the object of my affection to say when he comes in, it always smells so nice in here, like lavender ...
Absolutely love the idea of a "done for today" list. I always end my day frustrated and disappointed because I haven't achieved everything I set out to do. I'm definitely going to try it x
Pakistan Choi and radish are very easy and growing quickly.Peas and Green beans grow well but take a bit longer.and lettus is a skoosh and successful. Best wishes.lovely to see you enjoying your pretty home.🏡
You can use the lavender to make some "mothballs", not sure if they actually help or it's just a myth ;) my grandma always made them, simply wrap the lavender up in a piece of cloth, some old tights or socks and tie it up so nothing falls out, then put it in your closet and it will help prevent your clothes from smelling dusty and old!
I love a long winded person. Express yourself please. Get all those thoughts out niiiiceeee and slowwww We aren't computers we're humans. Slow living and slow speaking is a gift. 💕💕
Tomatoes don't like to be wet and rained on, and they like direct sun or just lots of light. Also do not harvest the potatoes now!! Potatoes are harvested when the leaves die off, so much later in the year! Rosemary, sage, thyme etc are mediterranean herbs, meaning they prefer dry soil, so you're right in that this isn't the best place for them. Put them in clay pots, as they are porous and allow the soil to dry out faster. I put them in big pots right away because I didn't want to have to repot them, but you can do it however you like. Just maybe don't take them inside, as they need lots and lots of light, and they're not meant to be inside for extended periods of time. Also: you can propagate these herbs pretty easily through cuttings rooted in water. I've even done it accidentally by adding rosemary to a bouquet. Letting you know just in case you would like to have backup plants (as they sometimes die in winter because they're not exactly used to freezing temperatures. Wrapping them in thin, white fleece can help there) or give some to your neighbours. Direct sowing works well with pumpkins, squash, zucchini, cucumbers (those need a trellis), as well as corn, beetroot, radishes, swedes and other things in the brassicaceae family. You can increase germination rate by soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours beforehand Garlic, like onions, is harvested late in the year when the leaves die off, similar to potatoes. If you're interested in something that both has beautiful flowers as well as it is edible, google jerusalem artichokes. they have a tuberous root system from which they sprout, and the tubers can be eaten like other root vegetables. Let some of the tubers sit in the beds or pots for next year to sprout from. But careful, they take over very easily, so if you want them to be in the ground, you'll need to install a root barrier fairly deep down. But luckily you can also keep them in pots perfectly fine. I'm sure they'd make lovely flower arrangements too for your vases. you can also try sunflowers, those are great for wildlife with their large flowers and eventual seeds. plus you can eat those seeds as well. there's lots of different varieties too, even with different colours apart from the basic yellow
Im waiting for red sunflowers !🌻 I also have a kind of yellow Wild flower that attracts yellow Bird and humming Bird and have a lot of butterfly Bumblebees bee and wasp cause of 5 lilacs trees. 🐦
if you make a little bag/satchel out of material you can use dried lavender as a scent pouch for draws or pop it under your pillow and it helps you sleep xx
Bundle the lavender flower buds, (no stems), in guaze bags or squares of cotton fabric and put them in your closets and dresser drawers. It will smell nice and help keep the moths away.
Beet greens are delicious! Sauteed with some onions and spices. Also great for any dish you would use spinach or kale in. They are a little less tough than kale, they remind me of chard.
I have feral neighborhood cats that like to dig in my garden and I use a product called “repels all” that is made with black pepper oil that actually does a pretty good job keeping them away. Just make sure you try to keep it off your skin and wash your hands after because if you have some on your hands and rub your eye it will burn. It won’t hurt the cats; they have much better noses than us so they’ll smell it from afar and stay away. As for what is easy to direct sow: squashes (including bush varieties like courgette and yellow crookneck), cucumbers, melons, radishes, bok choy, mustards, Swiss chard, sunflowers, and zinnias. Just make sure you have enough frost-free days left to reach maturity for frost-tender plants like squash, cucumbers, melons, and cutting flowers. But I think growing things like cucumbers and squashes from seed is very easy and very rewarding because they come up quickly and usually do really well; way better than starts you buy at a garden center or nursery.
if thease lavender bits are not dirty or in a some kind of dust, you have to make some cookies with dried lavender! use any simple sugar cookies recipe but throw into the batter the lavender like they were chocolate chips the smell in your house will be awesome, I promise!
Sitting here watching on a rainy evening, a hot cup of Scottish breakfast tea with oat milk, and the smell of garlic dill potatoes cooking in the oven. You can make a sachet with the dried lavender and put it in a clothing drawer to scent your clothes.
Also, lavender pairs well with chamomile for herbal tea. You can also add some lemon balm into the mix. It helps with relaxation and calming the nerves.
You've really been one of the people inspiring me to keep up with my garden even when I'm not feeling like going outside. For future reference, you want to wait to harvest potatoes until the tops start to die back, after they've flowered. This makes them as big and starchy as possible for storage. Of course there's also no problem with harvesting them a little earlier, in which case you'll get new potatoes! You might think about sheet mulching between your beds. And sheet mulching is what you do with no-dig. It's a little tough in a raised bed that's already very full, though. Broccoli is easy, just research what you'll do about bugs because they love broccoli. I use an organic pesticide with neem oil and other essential oils that works really well. And with any summer or winter squash in a cool, humid area, make sure you have an anti-fungal solution on hand, as you'll almost certainly need to spray for that (there are plenty of organic ones... a hydrogen peroxide solution works well if used periodically, and is super safe). Pumpkins would be great to plant right now (kabocha! jack-o-lanterns! sugar pie!), along with kale, which is a great winter veg. Chard is also super easy, and a perennial. If you have a late summer bell peppers could work, and they're perennials so even if they don't fruit this year so much you'll get peppers in the years to come.
To get more space walking into the kitchen you could have the island with less counter (I think it's called overhang, the part that comes out) Can't wait to see the new colors on!
This is a very random observation but I feel like given yours and Alex’s jobs are on the internet neither of you seem to be on your phone much it’s so good to see!
I've been having an issue with outdoor cats going in my beds as well, so I bought some wooden skewers (like for barbecuing), cut them in half, and stuck them into the bed. Seems to have worked so far, having done it a week ago.
Radish is super easy to grow - sow straight into the bed, keep watered and it's ready in a matter of weeks :) They're great to sow between rows of veg that takes longer - I have mine between my onion sets and they're working really well.
Yes, tomatoes need a lot of sun (at least 4-5 hrs/day) and, unless they're a wild variety/bush tomatoes, they also need protection from wind and rain, otherwise they'll go bad (enough space between the plants is also very important)!
Can I recommend planting your herbs still in the plastic pot they come in? That way you’re a) not wasting the pot and b) their roots can’t spread too far so they don’t end up getting enormous! I’ve done this with my herb bed and they’ve still grown to over a foot so if doesn’t restrict them too much ☺️
In the Bed at 34:08 I saw some nasturtiums growing. They will bloom so so beautiful! I even have them on my balcony. You can eat the blossom, it tasts like cress. If you google the plant, you will recocnice the leaves and maybe let it grow in the bed :) I always love your videos!
The allium (big purple blobs) in the new bouquet dry nicely and if you spray them gold or silver when they're dry they make gorgeous Christmas decorations 👍
I remember starting watching your videos to improve my english ( I am not in your target to be frank with you :). However I do recall your video when you hit 10k subscribers. It is somewhat awesome to see that the number has surpassed 500 k now. It is also nice to see that things are going well for you... especially when compared to the times when you were confused about the future. I guess dreams come true :) Keep it up.
Lovely video ❤️ Easy vegetables I recomend: peas, courgette and pumpkin. You can also try to grow sunflowers. And my last tip is to write down where all the vegetables are now, because you should not plant the same vegetables in the same bed every year (diferent flowers need diferent nutrients). 🌱❤️
For the lavender - I’ve seen little mesh pull string baggies (like the ones used for wedding favors) with just some loose dried lavender in them hanging from the mirror of your car. Wonderful natural air freshener. You just squeeze the bag to release another lavender puff.
I'm envious of the space you have for growing veggies. Well, I have the space just too much shade. But in the spots where we get sun I grow veggies. I really enjoyed this vlog. I've also been enjoying your cooking vlogs. I'm fairly new to the plant-based diet and they've been very helpful.
I am all for multiple beds for flowers! There are special seed mixes for bees and butterflies, and I am guessing those flowers would also look amazing when you cut them in the house! As a Dutchie I would also recommend you plant tulip bulbs in the fall (before the ground starts freezing at night). You can leave them in the ground forever and plant seeds over them in summer, so every year when the tulips come above the ground, you know that spring has sprung haha
You seem to have raised beds similar to mine. It is good to watch them during the day and just see how much sun/shade they seem to get. Some vegetables don’t seem to mind how much sun they get (at least in my garden), such as radishes, runner beans, spinach, some flowers… Just make sure the sun loving ones such as tomatoes have as much sun as possible. This year I also mowed the grass really short between my beds and put down weed barrier and then covered the weed barrier in wood mulch. I also did this around the perimeter of the garden. No more maintenance between the rows and it always looks good, easy to walk on too!
Climbing french beans are very easy to grow and they give good amount of harvest. I usually freeze the surplus. They can be used instead of asparagus is some recipes . I usually have so much crop I never buy them from supermarket, it's practically impossible to buy them plastic free so it's a great option to grow them yourself :)
Lovely video ! 😁 You are lucky to have such a big garden, I have been doing all my gardening on a three square meter balcony ! I might post a video soon to show what I have been up to 😊
Zucchini is easy just need it to be planted in a small dip and water a lot. Water collects in the dip. Plant quite apart from each other as they get quite big.
You can test dig a potato plant once the foliage dies back- you’ll get an idea of the size of the potato. They respond well to “hilling” up and will give you more tubers. Spring peas and new ( small) potatoes are yummy! Yes, tomatoes are a hot sunny weather loving plant. You can pull off the tomato suckers ( the new growth in the crotch of another branch and the main stem), root the suckers and start new tomato’s. Maybe you can open up the hedge that’s blocking the sun a bit? Since this is your first garden, give yourself permission to experiment, know you’ll have some failures that you’ll learn from and have fun.
Love the longer videos, I am looking forward to see how you paint the kitchen cupboard doors. I plan to do the same so will be watching with interest. Thank you for letting us see into your lives, lovely people and very cute animals.❤️❤️🐝🐝
Put your herbs into outdoor pots now or plant them directly into beds close to your kitchen. Tomatoes do need lots of sun, potatoes are harvested in the fall, rhubarb is a spring and early summer fruit, trim bits of your lettuces and greens as they are small and eat them as salads now. When you weed your beds, get the roots out, add some compost and dig in it then plant.
Those waffles look amazing!!! but eating in the car is soo weird for me, like i grew up and the rule was always no eating in the car and now I totally understand it!! The crumbs, the smells, it's one of those things you only understand as a grown up
Cardboard with mulch to get rid of the weeds and protect the soil until hour ready to plant. Consider building a fence around the veg beds Pinterest has some attractive looking ideas for it. Also prob a good idea to kill of the grass around and between the veg beds (gravel or pavers) then the grass/weeds aren't competing with the veg for nutrients ect
I love spending the day with you. My yard is quite small. In my part of the city the houses don’t have big yards so having a garden is not possible without taking most of the yard. I have some ideas for a small grand hope to get to create one in the future. TFS
For tomatoes yes they needs lots of sun and most likely will needed some support (you can tie them to a bamboo cane). You get two types, bush and cordon variety of tomatoes (you can google from the variety name which you have). You need to pinch out the suckers and grow with one or two leading vines so the plant puts energy into making fruit and not more leaves. Jess at roots and refuge farm has a good tomato growing video. There are lots of you tubers for allotments/gardening that offer advice, Charles dowding videos are great for info on no dig. If you have dandelions, couch grass or brambles remove them by digging out, otherwise just cover with card then compost. Garlic you pull when the leaves go yellow apparently (my first year growing it this year, mine are just starting to go yellow. Also the scapes (start of flowers), if you get them snap them off and use like spring onions, taste like mild garlic, and let’s the plant put energy into the bulb). Broccoli is easy, but you need to protect from caterpillars and cabbage white butterfly (a fine netting, you can use builders scaffold netting or get a proper netting, make sure the leaf doesn’t touch the netting or the butterfly’s can lay eggs on the leaf through the netting).
what a cozy video! loved it!🤍 with the lavender pieces, I’d put them in a little cloth bag and put it between your knitted stuff, especially those that have wool in them. it’s good against moths.
Feel your pain about the wisteria. Our balcony faces south: my container garden was so devastated by winds/storm that I had to start over from scratch with help from a landscape designer.

i am so excited to see where this gardening journey, i hope to learn a lot through you 💗💗💗
Late to the party but my cats loved digging up and using my raised beds as a litter tray (not ideal) i'd suggest looking into hoops and netting to protect your plants :)
Great vlog Madeleine. You have to wait until the potatoes flower and start dying ( when the foilage starts to go yellow) before they are ready for harvesting.
Hope you enjoyed this weeks vlog! Make sure to subscribe and like the video if you’re enjoying more vlog content ❤️
If you plant Merrigold flowers around the inside of the veg beds it will help keep out bugs from the plants.

I'm loving these almost hour long vlogs. They fit perfectly into my work lunch break and make my day!
Aww I’m so happy!
Same same, these are my favorite to watch during morning physical therapy.
Same here 🙋🏼♂️
We normally put dried lavender in thin cotton bags and put them into closets with out cloths - helps w/ moths apparently :)
I love hearing you speak fast and with passion and excitement! Never change xxx

Not strange at all! I love watching this style of vlog too so want to create more of them!

For the lavender - I’ve seen little mesh pull string baggies (like the ones used for wedding favors) with just some loose dried lavender in them hanging from the mirror of your car. Wonderful natural air freshener. You just squeeze the bag to release another lavender puff.
Bake with the dried lavender flowers! Lavender shortbread or lavender cupcakes are my favorites
Dried lavender is good to sew into little sachets to put in drawers and wardrobes to make your clothes smell nice.
Thank you so much for sharing! Such a beautiful home and I’m so excited to see the progress of your lovely garden 🪴
Thank you! So excited to share the progress!
Very nice sharing vlog . I loved it all the way .
"There's always another stomach for dessert." You're speaking my language! (Great idea for the cutting boards).
I love to put a ribbon around some lavender and then hang it up by the window. It keeps the spiders and the mosquitoes away🕷🦟.
Have a lovely weekend🥰🌻
I like to grind up lavender and rolled oats and use it in my bath. I grind it up quite finely and place it in a glass jar with a little wooden scoop.
Peas are good to but straight in bed, also beans, onion, garlic, carrots, beat root, also flowers! Also cucumber, those little ones.
Your little speech made perfect sense. Thank you, love the idea of done for the day list. Those waffles though 😋
My dog does the same as Rosie does when we go to the allotment ❤ i keep saying its her own private salad buffet 🥗 🥗🥗
Loving your longer vlogs and just seeing what you've been getting up to.
The cat nuzzling up to the dog gave me such happy endorphins 😍😍😍
Omg ur ocean is so clean .. waffles n ice cream my mama use to make for a dessert as a kid .. thanx for sharing
Put the dried lavender bits is a jar with epsom salt or grape seed oil to infuse and you can have a nice bath or body oil
Thank you!
Another tip: Mulching significantly decreases the need to weed and water your beds/plants :)
Love love love long videos 😍
Those waffles look amazing!!! but eating in the car is soo weird for me, like i grew up and the rule was always no eating in the car and now I totally understand it!! The crumbs, the smells, it's one of those things you only understand as a grown up
Haha we would have much preferred to eat on the beach with Roxie but it was such horrible weather!
@@MadeleineOlivia Ahah I understand that, The weather can be crazy sometimes
life is short eat in the car. its merely a large utensil with wheels
@@Motherhubbard170 lol
Cardboard with mulch to get rid of the weeds and protect the soil until hour ready to plant. Consider building a fence around the veg beds Pinterest has some attractive looking ideas for it. Also prob a good idea to kill of the grass around and between the veg beds (gravel or pavers) then the grass/weeds aren't competing with the veg for nutrients ect
You need a strimmer to cut down the grass around the Vegetable Beds, will help with weed growth on the actual beds.
I simmer the lavender in some water on the stovetop ... it scents the house!
I used to throw it into the fireplace to get some scent too
I love spending the day with you. My yard is quite small. In my part of the city the houses don’t have big yards so having a garden is not possible without taking most of the yard. I have some ideas for a small grand hope to get to create one in the future. TFS
Peas are really easy to grow! They want something to climb on, you can easily "build" something with big sticks and twine :)
In Pennsylvania we had a few nights in a row where the low got down to 40 F in the middle of June! The weather seems to be wonky all over
Home made potpourri with lavender, rose petals, etc, is a great natural way to help with those musty smelling clothes.
Earth up potatoes- mound up earth round them to get a better harvest - really easy to do with compost!
I make a weekly to do list and then I choose what I can or have to do each day.
the garlic tops have to die down before you harvest it,
store it dry, only wash before you use it
Watching this video was a lovely start for my morning! ❤️ Your place is so cozy and calming. :) I really enjoy these longer videos!
Broccoli is easy, but you need to protect from caterpillars and cabbage white butterfly (a fine netting, you can use builders scaffold netting or get a proper netting, make sure the leaf doesn’t touch the netting or the butterfly’s can lay eggs on the leaf through the netting).
what a cozy video! loved it!🤍
with the lavender pieces, I’d put them in a little cloth bag and put it between your knitted stuff, especially those that have wool in them. it’s good against moths.
Someone else suggested this so will give it a try!
@@MadeleineOlivia oh sorry for duplicating🙈 didn’t read the other comments🙈🙈
No not at all it makes me feel like it’s definitely a thing worth trying!
Feel your pain about the wisteria. Our balcony faces south: my container garden was so devastated by winds/storm that I had to start over from scratch with help from a landscape designer.
i am so excited to see where this gardening journey, i hope to learn a lot through you 💗💗💗
Tomatoes go in full sun, also put in a support as you plant them , a cage is the easiest option for a gardening novice .
Late to the party but my cats loved digging up and using my raised beds as a litter tray (not ideal) i'd suggest looking into hoops and netting to protect your plants :)
I'd also give growing courgettes a go, they're always encouraging because you end up with so many!
Try Runner beans!! Easiest thing we’ve grown though they need supports.
The beach, the beach, and your puppy! Waffles with fresh strawberries are my fav, I agree , without the sticky sauce.😊
Some small pea gravel between the beds would be awesome (and control mud when it rains)
you can make a really yummy beetroot and hibiscus juice! had some in morocco, very refreshing!
love your "speech"!
Great vlog Madeleine. You have to wait until the potatoes flower and start dying ( when the foilage starts to go yellow) before they are ready for harvesting.
