A brief correction: it's actually called "outsider art" and it's largely made up of people who never got formal training in the arts creating either for themselves or with aspirations of eventually being recognized. There's actually quite a few video essays on outsider artist figures, and it spans everything from hobbyists who just enjoy the craft occasionally to people creating sprawling works that rival the scope and scale of a Tolkien story It's a fascinating group of artists to look into and the works that come out of that group are genuinely some of the most innovative and thought provoking, especially for "classically trained" artists who get to appreciate the art as a puzzle and tease out the how and why they did what they did

Next time: Woolie shares one of the many odd things that happened in his childhood, and Jon decides to bring things full circle. Again.
man I had a smile on my face the whole time woolie was talking about his experience with jiu jitsu. It is really great to see that he found a good gym to go have a try and feel it out, the fact that he was very open to the experience is great, I wish all my friends would try it out when I recommend it like he did for John. Just some comments on the discussion: Usually people, specially beginners, will start already on the ground because the easiest way to get hurt while training is by falling the wrong way. Yes in jiu jitsu you learn the right way to take a fall and not hit you head or twist a knee or mess up your shoulder. When people say "beat up" in jiu jitsu it usually means they got "hit" with a lot of moves or got put under a lot of pressure as people were mounting or passing their guard, the beauty of jiu jitsu is that you can go very hard every day and no one will get hurt, this is impossible with any striking martial art. Woolie was rolling in the mate on his first day but that is not common as you really don't know what to do and will just flail and not accomplish much, where I train it takes about 3 months before they are confident and letting the white belts roll, before that they will be doing drills or just passing guard to get the basics down. Training jiu jitsu for the first time is a very humbling experience and learn it is a exercise in patience, both for the same reason, your body is not use to being on the ground using the muscles you need in the way you need them for, that is way it is so exhausting, and probably why Woolie said it felt like a war, at first and why it takes, like John said, a lot of time before you get confidente on ONE move. You will fail and get taped out, smashed, strangled and twisted a bunch of times, it is part of the process and honestly a lot of fun if you don't let it hurt your Ego. I don't know who this comment is for but I just wanted to talk about how much fun it was to see someone try jiu jitsu out and talk about it, I guess I just had to let out the things I wish I could say in the discussion about it.
Damnit you two, I was about to get some writing done. Bringing up youtube to listen to some music.. and I saw this is up and am watching all the productivity drain away.... Gonna go bang out this piece and then start this. Loving the pod.

man I had a smile on my face the whole time woolie was talking about his experience with jiu jitsu. It is really great to see that he found a good gym to go have a try and feel it out, the fact that he was very open to the experience is great, I wish all my friends would try it out when I recommend it like he did for John.
Just some comments on the discussion:
Usually people, specially beginners, will start already on the ground because the easiest way to get hurt while training is by falling the wrong way.
As someone who has a severe anxiety disorder, knowing bjj (boxing in woolie's case) helped you guys this much is incredibly heartening. I tried it once before and got gassed before we started and left in shame of my fitness. I think this is what i needed to hear to start turning things around. We'll see what happens.
Woolie's recommendation made me punch the air in glee. Let's fucking go!
9:40 this is quickly becoming one of my favorite podcasts
It was so awesome hearing Woolie talk about his BJJ experience. Always great to know about beginner’s first classes!
My fucking sides hurt from laughing. Johns choice is just.... god it's perfect.
