It’s no secret that travel (and total immersion) is one of the best ways to learn a language. You may not be able to physically travel to Paris right now, but we can go on a virtual tour of the city together!
In today’s lesson, I’ll walk you through the different “arrondissements” of Paris, pointing out common landmarks and explaining why the city is arranged in this way. Repeat after me as I slowly pronounce some new vocabulary words. Then, let me know in the comments: did you learn anything new?
    Take care and stay safe.
    😘 from Grenoble, France.

I lived in the 11eme for 14 years, right on the edge of the 20eme, Pere Lachaise was my go to place for a quiet walk to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. The 11eme, while not as popular as other arrondissements, is filled with a diversity of shops, people and tiny streets--and history--which makes it exciting. I love Paris, and even though I can get back once or twice a year, I miss it horribly, so thank you, Geraldine, for this quick and lovely tour! Stay safe!

En 2019, mon mari et moi, nous avons loué un air bnb dans le 14ème. Il y avait un boulangerie, un fromagerie, un charcutier, un petit épicerie et des cafés sympas. Un séjour mémorable 😊.

When I studied abroad, I lived in the 14th, my temporary home (Blvd Raspail) being right down the road from la Tour de Montparnasse. I could get there on foot in less than ten minutes, and any time I walked home from wherever I may have been, I'd use the building as a guide the whole way in order to not get lost, lol.

Enseignement excellent! J’adore Paris.

(French, Parisian, Living on the "Butte Montmartre" 100m or so from the Sacré Coeur)..
Factoid : Paris originally only had 12 Arrondissements - the rest were called the "faubourgs" (originally faux bourgs - or fake villages) - this still is visible by a certain number of arched gates near the center of Paris which guarded entry (there used to be a wall). Also, each arrondissement has its own townhall and mayor - with an overall Paris mayor seated at the "hotel de ville" - so it pretty much works as a federated city. But anyways, the old saying of "Marié à la mairie du 13ème" (married in the townhall of the thirteenth) meant living together without being married - something that was shunned upon at that time.

Walking through Pere Lachaise was so interesting....I was looking for Edith Piaf, and some guys with a small truck drove me to her....like stepping backwards into time from Sarah Bernhard to Jim Morrison of the Doors.

Thank you for doing this. I stayed in the Latin Arrondisement a couple of years ago. I tried to use my little bit of French knowledge, but the French I spoke with would immediately switch to English. Not sure if they just felt sorry for me or wanted me to get to the point!😄

If you persist with your French, most will accommodate you. I usually ask for them to speak slowly, and most do and are quite patient. Some want to practice their English ... some are impatient with slowly and improperly spoken French, but overwhelmingly most appreciate the effort to speak French in France. (I'm a historian of French history who has live in Paris during research trips numerous times--my French is not great, but I survive ... and this is my actual first-hand experience). And I agree, this is a great UA-cam channel!!😉

Nothing personal but French students take mandatory two or four years os English. So, if they think you are American, they get to practice. My French accent sounded eventually like a German - French accent that they had to endure my french, and I got to practice!

Excellent Geraldine! I moved here about 3 years ago and while looking for an apartment (which is very hard) we had a few air bnb's in Montmartre, then just outside montmartre in Saint ouen, then back to montmartre on rue Remy. It was wonderful we finally found an apartment in the 20 eme. it's not my favorite arrondissement but it can be quite convenient with the tram practically 5 minutes from our front door, also there is the lovely La Compagne à Paris. Thank you I always learn so much from you.

The Grand Paris is in the midst of new face with promising the most beautiful garden in the world in the making now . More walking lanes and wheels are restricted except bikes and E-scooter.
Éme 7, 8 is heavily renovated. I still prefer the Café along Avenue Kleber especially nite life. Champ-Elysée isn't that pleasant for nite clubbing. Known for drunken trouble makers.
Thank you Geraldine for the recall of Arrondissement. Your clarity makes it perfect. 👏🙏

The 15th is very residential, it's where middle-calss/upper middle-class families live. So it has a lot of commodities, such as shops, restaurants, good transportation etc. but there isn't a huge lot to see for a tourist. There are things to see nevertheless :
      - in the south near the border of the city there is a portion of "la Petite Ceinture", an old railway reconverted as a "promenade"
      - Parc Georges Brassens in the southeast is interesting because it used to be a slaughterhouse
      - in the east near Montparnasse you can see the Institut Pasteur (Montparnasse is also partly in the 15th)
      - in the north near the 7th the metro is overground
      - in the northwest there is the Beaugrenelle neighbourhood which has a big shopping centre and high towers
      - in the northwest too there is the Commerce neighbourhood which is quite charming, with commercial streets and cafés
      - in the west there is the Bir-Hakeim bridge which offers some of the best views of the Eiffel Tower
That's it for the tourist guide :)

Sadly I can confirm that the stereotype about a minority of French waiters being rude to English tourists is true, regardless of how polite you try to be to them and how much you try to speak French: it doesn't make any difference. But I repeat that it's only a minority of them. Most are okay.
