Most reactors are amazed at her ability to capture a jazz sound but I believe that she is rapt in the world of jazz when she sings this ... a higher level of understanding. I saw Jay Hawkins version of this but Angelina turns it more serious in it's intent. This is much more than musical athleticism.
Her grandmothers influence cannot be underestimated, she really seems to be the one who has seen and nurtured Angelina's talent. Amazing woman.

I don’t care about high notes, low notes, vibrato, vocal fry, .....etc. I want a singer that make me laugh, make me cry, make me happy, make me sad, make me jump up and down, and make my mind and thoughts go to places that they have never been to. I want a singer that can enter my heart and touches my soul.

Thank you so much for your reaction to our little Angel..I never get enough of her music I love her so much, I'm so glad you are going to react to her music because I only listen to her music everyday. I call her my little Angel , my husband passed away last December , I discovered Angelina when she was in AGT, I have listening to her songs since then she has saved me from falling into depression.
Many of us are saved in a similar manner. Any healing that can be brought to our current world is a blessing for sure.

Alan, your favorite part of the song, just before the "operatic ending", where she's singing "Oh, oh, oh, oh....", take note of her control. The first phrase of it is done with one breath. Likewise, many have commented on her holding the last note of the song, surprised she was able to sing it without her voice cracking or losing volume (when she sings "now") But the breath actually begins with "I'm yours...." This kind of breath control is off the charts for a child and underappreciated by many of her fans....In later versions of this song (and everything else she's done), we don't find her using the growls and screams she uses here. This is to avoid damage to her vocal chords.
in many of her covers it seems like she does not need to breathe. of cours she does, but it is imposing how little she need, and how effortless it is
Angelina's operatic ending is amazing and may be a kind of reference to the original. Screamin Jay Hawkins' initial goal was to become an opera singer. Hawkins cited Paul Robeson as his musical idol in interviews.
I am loving the last seconds of the video as she put her finger to the chin. In my imagine she reflects on how she can make it better for the next time. A real pro.

Angelina could sing anything and everything. Angelina Jordan hears a song. Receives it, passes it into her own unique wiring, modulates it, out comes another Angelicized wonder... Not taking anything away from the original artist, just performing it in her own almost-parallel dimension, all to the good... She grokked onto every gimmick that Jay put into his performance, modified them for her own vocal capabilities and style... MAGIC.

This is a very good and informative reaction. IMO, that look on Angelina’s face at the end of the song is her going over and self analyzing and critiquing her performance in her mind.

The hard part, as you alluded to (maybe indirectly) is that it is difficult to find words to adequately explain/describe/ express the personal soulful/spiritual connection that Angelina generates with each individual listener. She sings to me, for me, and I feel it deeply. I don't know what you feel. It may be very different . But, ultimately, she does the same to you and to every listener. Her ability to connect, to share her interpretation of the song, is almost other worldly. Another overused word (but what can we do?) Is amazing...time and time again. I hopped on your train. This is also one of mine +200 times played songs from Angelina. This was the video that hooked me, and I to love her voices nuances. There will be very hard for someone to copy her music/way to do covers.

Thank you, Alan. Your "sophomore" reaction/analysis video to Angelina is excellent. It does a great service to those who have just been introduced to her or those who need some of the "gaps" filled in. I have been following her since NGT in 2013/14 and, like you, have tried to acquire as much knowledge about her as possible. When I watch other reactors and they say something like, "How old is she in this video?", I find myself saying out loud to my computer screen, "9". Or, when they start watching her video, stop it and say, "I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes..", I blurt out, "Just wait!". I look forward to your next reaction/commentary of our girl. Everyone has their own go-to statement about Angelina. Mine is: "Angelina doesn't sing songs. She sings emotions that go directly to our souls to create beauty and joy." This is Angelina's world. We just live in it!

I just came across this video, and after listening to the first 2 minutes, I subscribed. People can analyze Angelina all they want, but for me, it's 'emotions'. She draws emotions from you that a child her age should have no comprehension of, but yet she still does it. Almost every song I listen to, brings tears to my eyes for any number of reasons, and sometimes for reasons I have no understanding of. I think I've heard every song she has on UA-cam at least 50 times each, but every time, the tears still get pulled from my eyes. I look forward to your reactions.

You see, I too am a CRYER. And I thought:
1 There are many many of us out there who cry to AJ. They need a voice
2 These are not tears we should be embarrassed about- these are tears we should be proud of (it shows we're ALIVE)
3 These are not happy tears; these are not sad tears. So what kind of tears are these?
But when the camera started rolling, I froze a bit and tears did not roll. (Having said that, I have tears in my last 3 videos.)
So with no tears in front of the camera, I decided on a different approach- like the theologian who knows he can never explain the Essence of His Mystery, so instead chooses to describe events and evidence around the edges.

After seing his performance, I'm even more impressed over the way a 9 yr old making this GEM of an arrangement, paying homage to the original, and still elevating it to gold.
Well, I agree that trying understanding her through “analysis” is essentially pointless. So here is my analysis. 😂
Technically, Angelina obviously has at her disposal an insanely vast array of extremely well-developed vocal skills, tricks, ornaments, devices etc. that she can call upon. She has total confidence in every one of those devices. But that’s not what makes her a great singer. In my opinion, when Angelina is performing a song, her objective is not to show off her technical skills. It is to convey the meaning, the mood, the emotion of the song. She does that by applying those devices that I talked about. They are not the end. They are the means to the end. The song is basically a painting in sound. The vocal devices in her repertoire are the paint brushes, the colors, the textures. She uses them, mixes them and combines them however she feels is necessary in order to achieve her objective which again is essentially to make us *feel* the song.
And while I don’t want to put down other artists, this, in my opinion, is what separates her from others like, for example, the dude whose name starts with “D”. Again, her skills are not the end. They are not the objective of the performance. She conveys what she needs to with her voice. Yes, she has a confident stage presence, she commands her attention. But she doesnt need drama or theatrics in order to convey the emotion of the song to us. I don’t want your space to be about negative comparisons with others, but I think it’s important to illustrate the point that I’m making.
I don’t think what I’m saying here is anything deeply insightful or profound. But it is the closest thing I can come up with to explain the impact she has on me. She’s not just a story teller. She creates gorgeous landscapes of sound that go far beyond a simple narrative. They go straight to the soul. Or, if you prefer, the limbic system. 😃
I’ve had a few medical issues over the past year and there are times when I was maybe a little scared, depressed, alone and isolated from my family. I discovered Angelina around the same time I was given a pair of AirPod pros. Angelina’s voice was a big part of helping me tolerate and get through some pretty rough times. And you don’t have that affect on somebody by simply telling a story or showing off your vocal tricks.
The kid is nothing short of a goddamn genius and I am so glad she signed that deal with Republic Records and will have an opportunity to really share her talents, healing powers, positive messages and charitable character with a broader audience.

Exactly; I would just add that she can call on any of those "devices" you described at any point in a song. If she can't quite hit the note/tone she was planning, she will make an instantaneous adaptation to still produce her unique and exquisite sound.

Yes, I consider our Angelina a religious experience. Maybe we are taking a different route to different churches but we are both moved in a way that is difficult to describe.
Angelina derives great benefit from the rich history of Persian culture that has informed her grandmother. She also has another very rich cultural heritage from her Japanese grandfather.
To elaborate on a point I made in this video, it's not enough to say that she is living in a house with 2 'moms'. I think it's more accurate to say, she has 2 lots of, not just support, but unconditional love. (Think of the difference between 2 speakers/stereo and 1 speaker/mono.) This extra dimension has liberated something very deep in AJ which is more a statement about human potential. And it is this depth of human potential that no one is accustomed to seeing which is Angelina's secret talent.
Ours is an example of the conversation that we Angelinologists can look forward to for many years to come.

First, this is a great review video. I appreciate how much homework you have done. You have given lots of great facts. I know that when you do as much research as you have done here, you want to be as accurate as possible, so I assume you will welcome some "fact checking"/corrections.... so......
(and don't take this as criticism just trying to maintain accuracy and not allow any false information to propagate)....
- One major inaccuracy here is that Angelina's grandmother most definitely did not direct the "still holding out" video. If you dig a little deeper into the back story of this song/video, you will find that it is a pretty controversial topic among Angelina fans. If you ever decide to do a review of that one (which I don't recommend touching), be very careful with the facts.
- It is unknown if Mery was the one that shot the video on Venice Beach... to me it doesn't look like her signature camera work ;) If you have some evidence to suggest that it was her with the camera, let me know so I can note it. It is actually credited as being produced by Ivan, so it is more likely that he was the one that went out with her to shoot it (but this is just a guess).
- The videos that are known to be directed by Angelina's Grandmother are "Fly Me To The Moon", "When You're Smiling", and "Shield"
As I said, I appreciate that you are doing research and getting information out about Angelina, but when making videos like this it is pretty critical to be very clear about which things are backed with evidence and which things are opinions/speculations. Things that land in a video like this tend to be 'carved in stone' in the minds of some people so accuracy is important. There is a lot of conflicting information out there in the comment sections, and I have spent a lot of time sorting out the rumors from the evidence, so if you ever have questions about anything feel free to reach out. I will be happy to tell you if something has been verified or not.

I am most curious why I should not touch I'm Holding Out for you'. I was going to use a 20 second clip of that in video #4. If you wish to discourage me from doing that, I would be most curious to know why. (And I'm in complete agreement with you. The way she hits the words 'down' and 'drown' near the end of the song are wonderful.)
Yes, I'm aware of the history with Baby Fuzz not wishing the lyrics to be rewritten and AJ vowing never to sing the song again because it describes 'self'harm'

@@thealanpapier The MAIN issue with "I'm Still Holding Out" is that Angelina never released this song. I don't mean never made an official (for sale) release. I mean she never published the song. She never shared it on youtube, or any of her other social media. It is a work that she did, that was (somehow) taken from the studio and published without her permission. There was a time when you could not even post this video in any of the fan groups because it is a work stolen from Angelina. This in itself would be bad enough, but then add to that, it is a song that she doesn't approve of, and will not sing again. So it is a song she doesn't want out there, stolen and published without her permission. To me, this is reason enough to not promote and advertise it.
That's the reason I discourage most people from requesting it on reaction channels.... but for you in particular, I would discourage it for an even bigger reason.... You are making videos where you are presenting information that people are going to assume has been thoroughly vetted and accurate. The stuff you say is going to be perceived as facts. As someone who has been digging into this one for a while now, I can say that you are going to have a hard time finding any hard evidence to back _any_ of the facts that could be given about this song. Even the one piece of what could be considered "evidence" (a comment made by baby fuzz on the video), has some questionable statements in it which make its validity suspect at best (the comment is now gone also).
.....But even if you can somehow uncover the real, full story behind this (which short of interviewing Angelina or her team, would be impossible), it would still be an advertisement for a stolen work. You can play it however you feel, but Angelina has sung 131 songs, so there is plenty of other material to cover.

Of course this is a one-off performance that isn't really Angelina's style, but the fact that she is able to pull it off is remarkable. There is one thing that I keep going back to. During the sax solo, the look on her face is priceless. It's maybe half Mona Lisa smile and half Elvis sneer. I think it's fantastic.

Beyond superlative... thanks for so much homework on the grandmother. I've wanted Shackleford to keep a chart on first-timer reactions: "(1) What?!! (2) How?!! (3) This isn't possible!" You've covered these... what was your first-ever reaction? (Mine was a dead-stop, headphone check, exit video, start it again.) One other reaction: people stop. Dead in their seated-tracks. Many women reactors will eventually pick the rhythm back up, and sensually, as if "This is how I could sing this, too" - ie, with all that feeling. Males bounce around sometimes, but many of them simply stay 'still' - is if moving, flinching, might break that spell. Angelinaologists, huh? Right now, I'm still enjoying a variety of reactors over this year and a half.
I noted some reactors are physically repulsed and show some subconcious flight reaction to danger by moving back to a safe wall ;-)
In my impression there is clear split between normal people and people with some musical knowledge. 99% of normal people are guaranteed to be gobsmacked. Many musicians are taking it as it is and are reacting intrigued and enjoy it.

Back again for another comment. We often question why Ange!ina's singing affects us so deeply. For many (most?) singers the lyrics are just words on the score. I wonder if Angelina learned how to interpret lyrics from her poet grandmother to understand the meaning of the song and then convey it to us. A very sensitive young person.
She came from the planet "Talent" where everyone has some kind of super ability. She lived on the same street as Dimash and around the corner from Tiger Woods. She came in a rocket wrapped in a blanket which her family made into the outfit she wore on AGT, with the leftovers making the mask in the "The Show Must Go On" video.

Great video, almost everyone else misses the ode to Screaming Jay Hawkins. Most famous version is by Nina Simone. There are so many versions of this song. My second choise after Angelina is Creedence Clearwater Revival, totally different

In Angelina's book, the girl asks her what she wants to be when she grows up, she answers - "Artist ", she wants to sing to the whole world - not just a singer! As was said in the comments- she paints a picture with her voice!

Consult with Rusty Shackleford, who has preceded you as a Angelina docent for some considerable time and has done his research in great depth.
Very nice Alan, thanks for the channel. I to reach out to Angelina for comfort. After being consoled, I either have tears of joy or just tears depending on what I needed. My take at 12:37 is that she's already thinking of ways to improve what she just sang or possibly making a mental note of what she will try the next time - my hope is that someday you will get the opportunity to ask Angelina yourself as to what was going on in that magical mind of hers.

So thankful to Angelina's gradmother for capturing it, although at times I have to close my eyes in order to avoid mal de mer(y).
