How does Angelina Jordan generate such emotion?
What does she do with her voice?
These are only 2 of life's mysteries.

There is no single thing that Angelina does that marks her out from the rest, there are hundreds of things that she does but she she does them all properly and frequently together. The miracle that is Angelina is that she holds it all in her head and it doesn't overwhelm her. She doesn't get stressed, she realaxes as she practices her art and we relax with her. She reaches into our hearts through the honesty of her own. And then there is her voice....
I try to explain to myself how she makes me feel and I find myself reaching for spiritual/mystical language as my only medium. This is hard for an ardent atheist (for the last thirty years) to admit.
In the end it doesn't matter how or why. What matters is that she does and hopefully will do for many years. Angelina improves all our lives as a resuly.
    Thankyou Angelina

Alan, great stuff. By the way, there's a video out there with Angelina singing SMILE as a back drop song to a Norwegian documentary. It's not perfect because it's compromised with talking in the video but there is enough of Angelina to well, that brings me to my real point. Alan, I just did some quick math and have figured that in the last 100 years there have been 100 different and prominent singers (vocalists) on the scene in each of those 100 years. That totals up to 100x100= 10,000 singers. We are talking great singers. And, as marvelous as they are, one stands above all the rest when we speak about singing with emotion and making listeners cry, sometimes uncontrollably. The singer's name is Angelina Jordan. Alan, I can understand why you made this video because you have hinted several times before that you would like to offer your opinion about what Angelina is all about using logic trying to explain the phenomenal feeling she brings to us when she sings.
I throw out logic and believe there is something inside her that combines her musical abilities with a loving and caring heart and a soulful beauty that makes it happen. It is so unique and impossible to duplicate. And, we should always give credit to her family to love her and guide her and let her fulfill her dream. Throw in everything else, too. Her humbleness, her smile, her eyes, the way she carries herself. Her confidence, how smart she is. And, we spoke about this before Alan, she has come to understand what she does to us and she is so very happy to exchange love with us at every opportunity. She is not challenged by such a role. That is who she is and we should be so happy and thankful that we can enjoy her because she brings to us a warmth and a caring, loving tenderness which helps get us through these trying times.
I don't know of another singer who can make you cry even if you hear her sing the same song over 1,000 times. Our heart and our soul can immediately identify Angelina and when that happens, it's bliss.

I especially like how you cover Angelina‘s music history and the little stories that you share that are kind of behind the scenes. I would love To see her do the song “Mercy” by Duffy. I imagine she could go in a number of different directions either making it jazzier with a slower pace or even with that haunting quality she’s done and other songs. That piece of dried vegetation behind you resembles the brain too! You've made a connection for me, or maybe completed a connection I've been on the road to, between artistic expression and the universe. When you first suggested art by mother nature, I objected because to me, art implies human intention. But considering the possibility of a universal consciousness, as I've been doing, allows and even obviates this connection. So while objecting, I looked up from my computer and out the window to a beautiful tree (I love trees) and made, or completed, the connection. Thank you!

Alan, I really enjoy your perspective of Angelina. Your videos compare her to the superstars she is covering and how in most cases she does it better than the original. First of all I am completely overwhelmed by her incredible talent and beautiful voices. I say voices because she has always demonstrated many singing styles from her version of I'd rather go blind with a completely fried voice to a million years ago with the most beautiful sweet almost crying style. However my favorite song she covers is "smile". It's her most beautiful voice ever. I just wish I could find the original without the talk over of the documentary it is being used for. I am old enough to remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan back in the early 60's so it's good to know others like yourself and Po and also Chris Walker who are completely gobsmacked by this incredible talent.

Great job, Alan! Okay, I'm not a vocal coach, or even a musician either and I know next to nothing about music theory.
That said, I've listened to a number of vocal coaches and teachers who do know a bit about the subject. Runs can add a lot to a song, but they can also be overused. I think a couple of your superstars tend to do that regularly.
Typically, a run is used to convey emotion that is not fully expressed by the lyrics alone. It has to be chosen and positioned wisely. There are artists that use runs just to show off. If you use a run on a word that doesn't have emotional importance, you've wasted it and conveyed nothing.
Angelina doesn't do that. She chooses her runs with great care and a lot of subtlety. The only time I thought she overdid it was one spot in "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," but that's just my personal opinion, probably shared by almost no one. ;-)
I heard one reactor describe one of her runs as dancing all around the note and I though it was an apt description.

    • @ShanLiB
      @ShanLiB 3 роки тому +4

As great as Angelina's performances were on AGT-C, I think the number and lengths of runs in them were specific to the occasion in order to demonstrate her talents and mastery in an abbreviated amount of time. I marvel at her skills and what she accomplished on that show but, having been a fan for a couple of years prior to that, it seemed obvious to me that she tailored her performances to that venue. Her adjustments to that environment were masterful.
Edit: After re-reading this comment, I have to apologize for my long-winded way of agreeing with your comment about "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". 😊

the difference between Angelina and everyone else is that they typically try to make the run stand out like a boast or a showboat act. Like hey everyone look what I can do. Angelina injects runs just as being an organic part of the music. She also varies the dynamics, color, and texture of her voice in the run. There is no comparison you can make that does anything but show Angelina's dominance. Runs are some peoples great achievement, and they are but a small bit of Angelina's music kit.
