As a young boy I was obsessed with JB. He remained my favorite player ever, still love him today. All these segments bring back such wonderful memories of the great man. The best catcher of all times.
Jerry Arrigo had repeatedly shaken off Bench's signs. He had told Dave Bristol that Arrigo's fastball was dead that day and that he should not throw it on certain counts to certain hitters. So when he insisted on throwing it, Bench caught it bare handed to show him how weak it was.
Johnny Bench led the Majors in Home runs and runs batted in 1970, 1972, and 1974. Six times between 1970-1977, he drove in 100 plus runs and from 1969-75, he had 224 of his 389 career homers. Won back to back World Series titles with the Big Red Machine in 1975 and 1976.
That last homer against Pittsburgh bottom of the ninth..I was 12 yrs old and having been to many events since..I've never heard crowd noise like that since! I thought Riverfront was going to collapse!

AMEN ! ⚾️⚾️💪💪☝️
a catcher any team would want no one better
Best Defensive Catcher of All Time!
It's almost as if he invented the position.
I must add he is the best all-around Catcher of all-time.
Best catcher ever, not just defense.
He definitely set a lot of Benchmarks!! He is the GOAT
Don't forget the time where as a rookie, Johnny Bench caught a pitcher's pitch barehanded and threw it back faster than the pitch was.....

Johnny Bench was 6-foot-2 1/2 nearly 200 pounds of hitting power and prowess.
Bench is the GOAT at the catcher position.
Agreed
Yogi was really good as well.
