311 released their 2nd album Grassroots in July 1994. A favorite album for many of the band's fan despite the muddy production. The old saying of "you have your whole life to make your first album and 6 months to make a follow up" is extra true here. The band's debut album in 1993 was comprised mostly of reworked songs from their independent demo with a couple newly written songs. While on tour in support of their debut, the band's RV went up in flames. The guys in the band lost everything except for the clothes on their backs. They managed to continue touring thanks to donated instruments. While recording the album there were tensions with producer Eddy Offord which lead to the producer walking away. The band has been unable to release any remastered versions of Grassroots due to not having the masters to all of the songs. Despite all of this going against them, they put out a follow up just over a year after they released their debut. One of their best albums. Just pure groove and energy all the way.

Sonic Youth “A Thousand Leaves” is such a beautiful album. Takes me right back to the 1990’s (1994) 😊
30 years ago this month, I happened, too.
