  • Hi everyone. :)
    Affiliate link for the propagation box in the video👇👇👇
    →Propagation Box: amzn.to/3ttB2wm
    In this video, I propagate some crape myrtles from a tree I have in my front yard. I don't typically like Crape Myrtle's but this one has beautiful bright red blooms. Since I'd love to add a few more to my yard, I decided to propagate them.
    You can make your own propagation box if you'd like but using the premade box was so much easier for me. If you like the box, be sure to use the link below to help me out.
    You want to clip branches off your plant and make sure to cut them below right below a leaf node and rip all the leaves off except for a couple. You don't have to add a rooting hormone, but it helps. The one I used could be bought just about anywhere.
    Fill up your propagation box with coarse sand. You can use play sand from home depot, but I find it doesn't drain well, and is easier to drown the cuttings in. Thoroughly wet the sand all the way through. Don't have standing water but just make sure it's all been wetted. I have holes drilled in the bottom so water doesn't ever just sit in there.
    Once you have the sand in the box moist but not soaking, and the cuttings are ready, you can simply stick them in the sand. Put the box in indirect light (shade but still has light around it). Mist it if it gets dry but don't ever put too much water in it.
    You should have roots in a month or so. Happy propagating :).

    I planted a few crepe myrtles, however I fell and kicked one of them, breaking it from the middle up. I didn't know what to do with the top, so I started looking for videos and found yours. Thank you because I already have many happy youngsters ready to be planted.

    Are you using sand only and do you water daily or just one time at the beginning. You got some nice roots..

  • @carlderossi6497
    @carlderossi6497 2 роки тому +8

    IF you pour a little water at the base of the cuttings they come right out of the sand with less chance of damaging the fresh roots .

    hello, where did you buy your plastic box where you propagated your cuttings. and what substrate did you use for the propagation of your cuttings.

    • @plantaddict5390
      @plantaddict5390  2 роки тому +2

      I got the box of Amazon you should find it if you search “propagation box”. The substrate is an all-purpose sand from Quickrete. You should be able to find it at any hardware store.

    You should mention where you are located...it makes a big difference. I think your in the south, where crape myrtles grow year around...that is why you have good luck, but here in the NY area, I have done the same thing you did here and months went by without and roots.

    • @plantaddict5390
      @plantaddict5390  3 роки тому

      I’m in Dallas, Texas. They don’t grow year ‘round but we do have a long growing season. Did you try it in July or august?

    • @calluna7065
      @calluna7065 3 роки тому +1

      It may be harder in NY. In the south, where I am, crepe myrtles are impossible to kill.😂 I took a crepe myrtle that had been run over countless times, uprooted it and put it in a nearby hole with nothing but a bit of water and enough soil to cover the roots. It grew a couple of feet in 2 years and is now a thriving, happy plant. Another one that had been mistakenly planted too close to my house, we pulled up an replanted...but some part of it was left behind and we’re still pulling out suckers from that spot every year.

    I cut water bottles in half and used potting soil. When I see roots then I transplant. I have no problem rooting white, pink and purple ones. I don't think I have been able to get red to root yet. I am trying 9 right now. Maybe I should switch to sand?

    • @plantaddict5390
      @plantaddict5390  2 роки тому +1

      Hey if it works in soil with water bottles then keep doing that! I may try that actually as I feel bad wasting all the water bottles I drink.

      @@plantaddict5390 It was a lazy fix, use water bottles or order pots from Amazon.

      @alanheadrick7997 2 роки тому

      So its been awhile, I now get all my red ones to root. I remove all the leave. The other colors actually grow leaves then die, no roots. AARRGG!

    How often did you water the plants in the box?

    • @plantaddict5390
      @plantaddict5390  2 роки тому +4

      I didn't. If the sand is wet and the box stays shut and out of direct sunlight it will stay humid enough. I live in a humid climate tho. If in a dry climate, I'm sure just misting the leaves every so often will help.

      I’m sorry to say that Texas had one of the worst winters on record and these potted babies weren’t established enough to make it. In hindsight I should have brought them inside when it was 0 Fahrenheit out. (The Mother crepe myrtle survived because it was in the ground next to our warm house.) But we live and learn. Thanks for the comment!
