Plant Name: Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia)
Perennial as a bush or tree
Zones: Cold Hardy through zone 5
Light Exposure: Love sun, will grow in part shade but blooms are reduced.
Moisture Requirement: Not drought tolerant and will need supplemental watering during dry periods.
Soil Preference: Very tolerant but clay soil should be amended with sand. Soil needs to drain well.
Seeds: Produced on plant after it blossoms in a seedpod. Many seeds per seedpod. Seeds most likely will not match parent plant, can be started indoors.
Propagation: To obtain a plant the same as the parent plant use a root cutting or regular cutting.
Planting Depth of Seed: 1/4 inch
Planting Space: 15 feet between each shrub
Plant Height: 10 to 30 feet tall
Plant Width: 15 to 25 feet wide
Plant Color: Pink, red and white are the most common colors.
Bloom: Mid to late summer.
Care: To obtain a tree like plant, Crepe Myrtle needs to be pruned back at the base in the spring to remove new growth and suckers at ground level. Leave 3 or four main branches to grow tall. Do not prune off at base if you want a bush. Prune back or leave seedpods in the fall (they add some interest visually).
Where to Grow: Makes a nice tree line. Any where you would like some shade but not the solidness of a hardwood tree. Use as a bush for accents.
Unique Characteristics: Attractive through all seasons, spring foliage, summer blooms, fall seedpods and foliage, winter dark brown seedpods.
Companion planting: Part shade to shade perennials can be planted under the tree once it is established.
Fun Fact: You can mow a Crepe Myrtle with the riding mower and it will survive! Trust me I know. - Навчання та стиль
"Seed pods have a crown. Flower buds do not." Thank you! Finally someone who explained it so easily!
This is the ONLY video I found about actually seeding Crape myrtles. THANK YOU!
The pencil trick was over the top. Outstanding!
Thank you so much for differentiating what is a seed vs pieces of empty seed pod...saved me a lot of effort trying to grow something that wasn't even a seed!
Same! 😂
Continued - inside the house and placed on patio in a shaded area, very little direct sun but still full daylight. I continued to mist daily and watch them grow. All those seed pods opened underneath the soil and today I have 10 16oz containers with 6-8 thriving plants in each container and they are now 4-6 inches tall. I have moved inside as it got too hot outside for those young plants. Can't wait to plant outside next spring and see what color they will be. Will be planting as a colorful border around patio and multi colored plants will just be spectacular.
Hi ❤ love crepe myrtles. I have watched you several times. To show us in a step-by-step procedure was wonderful. This is my first time commenting but I have been watching your video over and over. The effort that you put into teaching us is outstanding. Hopefully I could get some myrtles in my yard, thank you...
THAT "HINT OF THE DAY" MADE THIS VIDEO WORTH WATCHING!
AWESOME TIP!! TY
Thank you! In from the tropics of Central America and I love that tree! I collect seedpods yesterday so I'm gonna try planting them this week 🙏🏼🌳💜💖
I love these trees they make your yard look like a paradise
Thank you so much for this video. I have been looking for instructions on rooting crepe myrtles but could not find one that i could really understand. I think now i can start to root a crepe myrtle on my own thanks to your video.
the cheerio reveal made my day.
I collected some seeds from the one in the yard. I planted them using the soil and bag method that you demonstrated. I am also going to try the cutting propagation method.
Thanks for posting this video!
I have a Muskogee (lavender color) that is my crown jewel that was planted about 1999 and over 20ft tall now.
Really has been the parent of about 15 + around my house because of the seeds going all over the place, especially between cement pavestones bordering my driveway. I dig them up when they are old enough during the winter and replant.
Now not sure if my Muskogee cross polluted with other crepe myrtles colors at my house, but I have a white-lavender (Natchez/Muskogee?) that is really unique surprise once it matured.
I will try this technique this winter. I have a lot of seedpods right now laying all over the place.
cross-pollinated?
Would love to see if your seeds germinate.
Oh never mind got my answer in the comments good job on seed harvesting video loved it thank you
I have a lavender crepe turtle bush, from which I gathered all the seed pods a couple years ago. Put them, still on the thin branches, into a plastic bag and placed in freezer in fall 2016. Due to ankle surgery early 2017 I did not get around to planting them until spring 2018. There were so many pods, I did not separate seeds from pods, but instead just dropped a the pods in a container with dirt, watered, covered, and waited. In about 3 weeks sprouts began shooting up, I removed from inside their
Thank you for explaining so wonderfully ❤️
Glad it was helpful!
nice video... There are no much video about crape myrtle seeds and seed pod. Thank you so much for this video...
Great video! Can't wait to see part two!
My crape myrtle has white blooms, I'm excited to try this, hopefully I'll get a red or pink bloom from some of my seeds. 😊 Thank you, very informative.
Good and helpful presentation. Thank you.
Very informative and easy to understand so I can grow my own. Thank you!
Very intersting Thank you.
I was thinking if you wanted to save more of the seeds wouldn’t it be helpful or feasible to put a net tie bag over clumps of the pods prior to them bursting open and losing some of the seeds. Kinda like when a farmer puts net bags over fruit so bugs and birds can not eat them?
great info! I really like to start my seeds in a covered container. works best for me. Can't wait to see the next video. By the way, I really like the sprayer.
I know you said first four persons to comment, but Im new and just came across your video wich I thought was a simple and to the point tutorial where anyone can understand thank you!
Also if you have any more seeds you can share, I would be appreciative of receiving some.
Thanks again, will be watching more of your videos.
I would love some crepe myrtle seeds. Can't wait for your next video. Thank you.
very nice, short and informative. getting ready to watch your follow-up
I was wondering how hard they were to start, thank you for sharing!!
I didn't know it was possible to grow Crepe Myrtles from seed. I'll try this in the fall.
And just look at these nurseries charging elaborate prices for a one or two foot cutting in a 4'' pot.
All trees grow from seeds in nature my friend
Cool from Jim’s wife Tara do you water the seeds every day? Thanks so much I love Jesus and crepe trees
I love the Cheerio displays
Love you video
So we'll explained.

Family have any medicinal properties?
Also if you still have any seed's left I would like to try planting some on my
Garden
I would love to have your seeds from. The Crape
Such a simple video but so, so helpful. Question: I am going to try this during the month of November indoors in my home in New Jersey and then want to take them down to Florida around the first week in January '19. Once I pot them in Nov/early Dec are there any special precautions, care I need to keep them until I go south? Will they go dormant at any time? Thank you Concetta.
Up north they will go dormant. Southerners cut their crepes back hard after flowering. Even in Alabama the leaves will fall off. The beauty is in the beautiful trunk it just gets better and better. Good luck
Soooooo, the results please?!
Learned alot, Thanks
love the method of planting, I would love some of the seed if you still have some , and what color is it?
Hi. Do you think I could grow Crepe Myrtle in zone 6a?
My first time trying to plant seeds but the thing is I have a bout 1 million of them, so can I save those or toss them or what should I do with all those. They’re everywhere here in San Antonio and just beautiful. I’m planting the seeds from the pods of our red crêpe myrtle. I just hate to throw seeds away what should I do? Freeze them? Thanks in advance, you’re great!
Good news! More show up every year, but I get you I just came across 5 jars of saved seeds from who knows when. Try to give them away maybe? Toss in a field - survival of the fittest?
Someone gave me a branch with crepe myrtle seed pods but they are green can I store them until the spring and maybe it will turn brown and open? If I can how do I store the seed pods? Thanks
I want to try this, can I start these in my house for next spring ?
Would love some seeds!
I lived in Florida for about 6 months a while back and they are very popular, now back in California. I live at 1050 golf ball rd, Nipomo CA 93444, would love to try to grow a Crepe Myrtle as I do well with most. Jeff Langbehn,, if you can send thank you so much !!
Well to my surprise i got one germination and its barely a 1/4 of an inch high and very green of my dwarf purple magic c m. Now i am at a loss for the next step. I do not want to kill it. Do i
open the small container and give it air, or do i still leave it in the container closed? Also, at what stage do i remove it from the container and prop it up in a pot?
I have a 30 year old C M and its the end of July and starting to bloom like it usually does at this time of year. I completely ignore it as far as fertilizing it. It does promote a lot of 'suckers' though and have has some success rooting them just to see if i could. They didn't last too long though. Last year I bought a dwarf C .M in a 2" pot, repot it in a 5" pot, went dormant in the Fall and came back middle of June. I repot as it was growing fast 2 months ago, and now it seems that I may need to repot again. I have never had to repot any plant twice in one season. Do u think its wise to do so?
Did if workout ? I’m in the process of planting some seeds. My hopes are low with this one
Please update on your trails
@@Groft_Grid I read somewhere that with 'big size seeds, you should first put them in water, to soften them up and then seed them as shown.
Pretty informative for a womans guide, wow good job!
muchas gracias
What month was this….that you planted them?
Hi there , which method work the best ? Thank you in advance.
Hi there, Could you teach how to germinate dwarf myrtle (myrtle communis compacta)?
where do we keep the bag with the paper towel
Would love some crape myrtle seeds
I would luv some seeds
Just a quick question. Do you wait until they turn brown on the tree or pick them and then wait for them to dry out? You may have said and I missed it. Thanks for the video! Going to do this this fall!
I have the same question. I have seed pods that came off the tree but are green, are they still viable if I let them dry off of the tree?
❤
So do you put the bag in the fridge or no?
Do you refrigerant them. How long?
Did you have to cold stratify your seeds? Did you place them in the fridge? If you pull them from the tree in October or November, do you have to put them through cold stratification for 60 -90 days?
Yes
Do you have the follow-up video yet from your C.M.s ?
Interesting...
DID THESE GROW ANY FOLLOW UP VIDEOS 😢
Hi, almost every tree in my apt complex is a crepe myrtle and they are all diff colors. I'd love to harvest some seeds for my bonsai hobby but im not sure when to harvest. The pods are on the trees now but are still green, should i wait to collect seeds until they have browned a bit?
Yes
When do I prime my Crepe Myrtle. I live on Zone 9.
Do you have any more seeds left?
Hi, do you have some extra myrtle seeds? I'd love to have some please.
yes can I have some of your crepemyrtle seeds or cuttings? I am from the Philippines.
I am too late but daughter sent me a dozen crape seeds. Ok do these plants self propagate?
Crapes actually are much easier to separate from the root so yes they do spread a bit and maybe some volunteers from falling seeds.
Hello there! I'm trying your method, thanks for making the video! I only was able to buy a dozen or so seeds online, do you have any that you can sell to me? Cheers!
Send me your address and I will throw some in an envelope for you. I have some from two summers ago so I am not sure they will work but you can give it a go. I plan on trying a few here soon since we moved. send address to groftthegrid@gmail.com
Put paper towels in fridge. They like cold germination.
For how long?
@@shawncarrell9101 60-90 days, cuttings is more reliable.
great video!! question though. I saw these in a strip mall in full bloom, and pinched off a whole bloom to take home for myself. Will the pods still be viable? You said not to pull them off too soon, but what if i pulled a whole branch off so that i could take it home and try to grow it from seed??
Dara Lushine i would like some of the seeds Evelene Woriax

I LOVE CREPE MYRTLE TREES BUT HAVEN'T HAD ANY LUCK WITH THEM
