    Plant Name: Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia)
Perennial as a bush or tree
Zones: Cold Hardy through zone 5
Light Exposure: Love sun, will grow in part shade but blooms are reduced.
Moisture Requirement: Not drought tolerant and will need supplemental watering during dry periods.
Soil Preference: Very tolerant but clay soil should be amended with sand. Soil needs to drain well.
Seeds: Produced on plant after it blossoms in a seedpod. Many seeds per seedpod. Seeds most likely will not match parent plant, can be started indoors.
Propagation: To obtain a plant the same as the parent plant use a root cutting or regular cutting.
Planting Depth of Seed: 1/4 inch
Planting Space: 15 feet between each shrub
Plant Height: 10 to 30 feet tall
Plant Width: 15 to 25 feet wide
Plant Color: Pink, red and white are the most common colors.
    Bloom: Mid to late summer.
Care: To obtain a tree like plant, Crepe Myrtle needs to be pruned back at the base in the spring to remove new growth and suckers at ground level. Leave 3 or four main branches to grow tall. Do not prune off at base if you want a bush. Prune back or leave seedpods in the fall (they add some interest visually).
Where to Grow: Makes a nice tree line. Any where you would like some shade but not the solidness of a hardwood tree. Use as a bush for accents.
Unique Characteristics: Attractive through all seasons, spring foliage, summer blooms, fall seedpods and foliage, winter dark brown seedpods.
Companion planting: Part shade to shade perennials can be planted under the tree once it is established.
Fun Fact: You can mow a Crepe Myrtle with the riding mower and it will survive! Trust me I know.

Continued - inside the house and placed on patio in a shaded area, very little direct sun but still full daylight. I continued to mist daily and watch them grow. All those seed pods opened underneath the soil and today I have 10 16oz containers with 6-8 thriving plants in each container and they are now 4-6 inches tall. I have moved inside as it got too hot outside for those young plants. Can't wait to plant outside next spring and see what color they will be. Will be planting as a colorful border around patio and multi colored plants will just be spectacular.

I have a Muskogee (lavender color) that is my crown jewel that was planted about 1999 and over 20ft tall now.
Really has been the parent of about 15 + around my house because of the seeds going all over the place, especially between cement pavestones bordering my driveway. I dig them up when they are old enough during the winter and replant.
Now not sure if my Muskogee cross polluted with other crepe myrtles colors at my house, but I have a white-lavender (Natchez/Muskogee?) that is really unique surprise once it matured.
I will try this technique this winter. I have a lot of seedpods right now laying all over the place.

I have a lavender crepe turtle bush, from which I gathered all the seed pods a couple years ago. Put them, still on the thin branches, into a plastic bag and placed in freezer in fall 2016. Due to ankle surgery early 2017 I did not get around to planting them until spring 2018. There were so many pods, I did not separate seeds from pods, but instead just dropped a the pods in a container with dirt, watered, covered, and waited. In about 3 weeks sprouts began shooting up, I removed from inside their

I was thinking if you wanted to save more of the seeds wouldn’t it be helpful or feasible to put a net tie bag over clumps of the pods prior to them bursting open and losing some of the seeds. Kinda like when a farmer puts net bags over fruit so bugs and birds can not eat them?

Such a simple video but so, so helpful. Question: I am going to try this during the month of November indoors in my home in New Jersey and then want to take them down to Florida around the first week in January '19. Once I pot them in Nov/early Dec are there any special precautions, care I need to keep them until I go south? Will they go dormant at any time? Thank you Concetta.

    • @tinawindham6958

Up north they will go dormant. Southerners cut their crepes back hard after flowering. Even in Alabama the leaves will fall off. The beauty is in the beautiful trunk it just gets better and better. Good luck

Well to my surprise i got one germination and its barely a 1/4 of an inch high and very green of my dwarf purple magic c m. Now i am at a loss for the next step. I do not want to kill it. Do i
open the small container and give it air, or do i still leave it in the container closed? Also, at what stage do i remove it from the container and prop it up in a pot?

  • @noel888
    @noel888 5 років тому

I have a 30 year old C M and its the end of July and starting to bloom like it usually does at this time of year. I completely ignore it as far as fertilizing it. It does promote a lot of 'suckers' though and have has some success rooting them just to see if i could. They didn't last too long though. Last year I bought a dwarf C .M in a 2" pot, repot it in a 5" pot, went dormant in the Fall and came back middle of June. I repot as it was growing fast 2 months ago, and now it seems that I may need to repot again. I have never had to repot any plant twice in one season. Do u think its wise to do so?
