Quite nice to see you covering a sport from our side of earth (southeast Asia). It's quite unfortunate that this sport isn't quite popular in other regions
I think that if a few more countries started to play it, it might get in. Sports need a certain amount of global appeal before the Olympics allow them.
+Maurice Krol Thanks Maurice, I appreciate the comments on my sports videos. Whether they're well known or not, I try and explain sports as simply as possible. Thanks again, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
This looks really fun. There are a lot of chances for injuries in this game, but I am sure with physical training it’ll all be good. If it’s added to the Summer Olympics, this sport will gain more popularity in other Asian countries and Europe, Africa, America and Oceania 👍
this is one of the most underrated sports, its very dificult because it requires great flexibility and leg dexterity, and besides, the acrobatic shots look very cool
t raven Sepak Takraw literally translates to 'kick ball' or some calls it Kick Volleyball, a sport originated from south-east asia, 'sepak' is a malay word which means 'to kick', while 'takraw' is a thai word which means something like 'woven ball', because of it being played with a woven rattan ball.. the sport is LIKE a combination of football(due to the rules of no touching the ball with hand when game commence) & volleyball with a little tinge of semi-martial arts skill put into it.
Elliott Cox Ah, I get the Chuck Norris reference you made. Well played sir! Seriously though - more nations should be playing this ... this is actually a pretty cool sport! Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Few reasons. Main one; injuries. This is an insanely injury prone sport. Like. I can't tell you how vulnerable all of this is. Doing a backflip and landing sideways on your knee is a recipe for a short career. There's no way to make this safe without taking away the whole spectator appeal of it. Second...Westerners are generally a bit taller. Like by a lot. The net is 5 ft. If you're 6'0, tell me how you're going to be able to get good leverage to kick the ball at 5'? Well, you aren't. Your leverage isn't there. Basically the taller you are, the less power you kicks are going to be, the slower you're going to be, the less flexible you're going to be(debatable). Being taller severely lowers your efficiency at this game. Also being taller makes this injury prone sport even more injury prone. Notice how basketball players get lots of injuries and they often just jump up and down, and forward.
@@myrusEW As someone already said, just make in the rules an standar height. As in some fighting sports depends on weight. Same but with height. is not crazy. even on horse racing, jockey should not be so heavy nor tall etc etc

This game is from Malaysia but Thailand is dominating this game. Basically there are 3 player per side and have three difference role. First, the "Tekong" who is taking serve. Second, the feeder the player who is setting the ball to the third player which is killer aka spiker. There is a new way to playing Sepak Takraw which only two player play per team. Their rules is same but it serve at the back of the court just like volley ball.
+Syakir Shamsuddin If this games were played only by two player, I don't think it should be called as Sepak Takraw anymore. Traditional three man team has been played since hundred years ago, and I think that was perfect.
Dont make it sounds overly complicated. This is a game based sport, its suppposed to be fun not scary. 1. No, you dont need to do acrobatic. A simple header is enough to get you a score. 2. No, you dont need to do tae kwon do for the serve. A simple kick with your inside foot is enough to move the ball from your field to the other side. 3. No, you dont need to link your hands together for celebration. You can choose your own badass celebration as you like. Remember that this is a game, so have fun.
Telled by your picture, you colonized our country for hundreds of years and you didn't even notice the game our people play? Yeah came just for the sources.
I don't know actually. I think it's only popular in Asia. But I think it could catch on, as the game is played on Badminton courts and there's plenty of those around.
+Kerath I dunno man, with a bit of practice and dedication, I think anyone can play this sport. Competing in the Asian games however - that takes some doing. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
@@NinhLyUK That might be teeeeeechnically correct since it looks damn near impossible for anyone who isn't a character in a tournament fighter video game >.>
You don't even have to be as acrobatic and as flexible as they are. Just needs to be able to kick the ball over the net. You absolutely can do it while remaining upright at all times.
Me as a member of under 18 sepaktakraw team representing my state, from india, can tell you that all these stunds performed as shown here woud only be performed in internationl events,we are not trained here to do such moves, just casual ones
I played a lot of volleyball in college (pick-up games and intramurals). My one friend that I played with often had an Australian friend visit and we played volleyball with him. He, not once, used his hands and essentially mimicked the skills of this game (with the exception of serving; he did that normally). It was quite the sight to see.
this sport is very popular in Thailand and Malaysia, but sadly in Indonesia it's only popular in some rural areas. Kids in the big cities don't play sepaktakraw anymore. Or maybe they never did.
It's Philippines' national sport way back. Filipinos used to dominate it in their regional ASEAN Games. But Thailand and other neighbors caught up and dominated the sport. So Filipinos abandoned it and declared Arnis as national sport.
The word sepak is Bahasa (the native language in Malaysia and Indonesia) for the word kick. The word takraw is Thai for ball. The Philippines version is played by pairs. The Sepak Takraw has a version for trois and for pairs. The one more known is the one played with threes.
I'm from Philippines and I only see this game during the school sports fest. This was not taught in our PE and I wish that they did. I particularly like the way the players did some moves like kicking while doing back spring hahahaa... It's a beautiful game but I don't see this game played on a daily basis hahaha (unlike Basketball)
+Ninh Ly, this is very popular in other ASEAN countries. In the Philippines, I've observed that the most popular is Basketball. There are Philippine regions though that produced good players in this sport but sadly they're not really given that much attention (I don't know about the budget) compared to basketball, volleyball, etc.
Interesting. Here in Malaysia we are 'forced' to learn and play this game. But most of time, during PE, back when I was in primary school. we played football instead because it can be played by the entire class, enough students to make 2 teams. The problem is, in most school, not every PE teachers can play this game, therefore it is hard for them to teach students how to make a strike for example. But still most schools, or at least at my school, most kids play in the evening, part of their extra-curiculum activities ( example Sepak Takraw club)
THIS IS TRADITIONAL GAME FORM MALAYSIA - Before they make this game to the world game, the traditional Malays game are will play for the circle. 3 peoples to 6 peoples are common in a circle. In this village game, one has to weigh no more than 3 times and has to send it to other players for a rotating count of up to 100 times. If any player fails to weigh the ball and falls. The player will leave the court. They will continue to play until the last one survives. That person is considered the winner. To make it even more dramatic and more challenging in one game, they added some techniques and tactics into a great game. It needs to have 3 players going to face 3 players and they use some rules and some dangerous and confusing kicking features for the purpose of beating the opponent. This makes this traditional sport better known as "SEPAK TAKRAW" and is now known around the world...
There once were 6 friends, who wanted to play some sports. One friend wanted to play football, while the 2nd wanted volleyball. The 3rd suggested badminton but the 4th preferred tennis instead. Then there were the 2 taekwondo and kungfu masters, who wanted to do some sparring matches. And after compromising among themselves, sepak tekraw was born.

Where can you stream it? I want to bring this to Europe!
I no joke want this in the Olympics. This is more hype than dressage by far...
Agree. This would be a great addition to the Summer Olympic Games
I think that if a few more countries started to play it, it might get in. Sports need a certain amount of global appeal before the Olympics allow them.
Dressage has a beauty on its own. No need to drag it (even though it's so dang boring if watched without any idea).

I think it will soon. It will be first introduce to Youth Games 2022 (teen Olympics). And Olympics 2024
