I used to play this at school back in Africa. I didn't even know the true name of the game lmao. We used to call it 'yes' 'yes' because if you want someone to pass the ball to you ,you had to scream 'yes' 'yes'.
I didn't know that. But now you know the full rules. Thanks for stopping by.
Ninh Ly The rules have always been the same but I was young so I don't remember shit. Thanks for reminding me lol too bad they don't play it much here in America.
Any time bro!
That’s really weird, In New Zealand we yell out ‘Here’ or ‘pass me the ball’ when free but if your at a higher level, you don’t really communicate like this anymore. It’s the passes job to have great awareness and spot your teammates who break away from their opponents quickly since technically you only have 3 seconds to release the ball. Netball is a pretty quick game
@@arohap6041 same we just scream HERE or PASS THE BALL
This looks exciting until it comes time for them to shoot the ball and then it looks like the defenders just give a half hearted attempt at a block and then just let them shoot. Interesting sport but not something I'm likely to get into.
+Jeffrey Montague Sadly, the rules state that all defenders must be at least three feet away - hence it's pretty much an open shot. The real skill is winning the ball if the person misses rather than stopping the actual shot. Thanks for your input, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
A really good defender can block a shot from being released and the defend the shooter from retrieving a rebound.
Jeffrey Montague If you are playing National Level you are just wasting energy as most of the time the player has that much skill they will most likely get it in each time. If you play amateur level however the defence is a lot roughter
Playing gk or gd is hard work. We do try to get the ball once they shot and when they are shooting. And this game is hard then it looks
I play GK and sometimes GD. Most of the time it is wasted effort jumping around when the GS or GA is shooting because (if they are quality shooters) they won’t miss. However, I use the lean technique to become the most intimidating as possible as when the shooter has the ball there is not much I can do. I will be concentrating on going for the rebound if they miss or sometimes jumping when they shoot (not all the time as it becomes expected). My biggest job is to prevent the shooter from getting the ball in the first place and blocking them from the shooting D.
Netball originally was called "womens basketball"
and the rules are actually a misunderstanding of the rules of basketball
Furlog Giant That doesn't surprise me in the least. But yes, it was called 'womens basketball' at one point.
Apparently Netball sounds like a better product than the WNBA.
Netball doesn't look like a misunderstanding to me. It's much closer to the Naismith rules than today's basketball. Must be a very early offshoot.
NO
It really looks like basketball footage of the 40s and 50s lol
Imagine: A basketball game with netball nets...
I think that would suck. Dunking wouldn't exist!
Ninh Ly I agree too. But I think he means the shooting part since those nets are reeeeaal small
Tim Duncan's worst nightmare
Nicholas Garcia rim would brake on the 1st dunk
Nicholas Garcia Everyone gnna rely on splashing the ball
Leave a like for Basketball!!
I like both sports
So basketball minus back board and fans
There are definitely fans. There's professional leagues that fill out arenas in the UK and Australia. Backboards ... no. There's none of those.
Damn underated comment
Also, minus rubbing your ass to your opponents crotch.
@@angelarcortez Also, minus Pick and Rolls, Fadeaways, three-point shooting, deadly crossovers, jelly layups, bank shots, dunks, Give and Go's, Hook shots, behind the back passes, spin moves, up and under moves, alley oops, posterizers, game winning shots, half-court shots, euro steps, fastbreaks, cutting to the basket, and etc.
Or fun
I’m playing netball tonight for the first time in 30 years. I needed a refresh of the rules. Good explanation 🏀
“Not everyone is allowed to shoot the ball” yea I’ll leave on that note

It's like basketball just except for being fun.
American right?
This is almost literally the original rules of basketball when it was first created
Basically yes. The inventors of this game wanted a female version of the original basketball - hence this.
Thats it, is a offshoot of early basketball designed for women. In the Eduardian era women used to play with ankle lenght skirts. So they have to change it.
malaquias sawoe basketball used to suck
It arose from the misreading of a court chart that James Naismith sent to england. It was thought that the court lines meant players couldn't cross the lines
I’m so happy they changed the rules.
give it up and swich to basketball
FEED THE HUNGRY TROLL WNBA this is for women too
Jtzkb do you even watch basketball? And you say it makes it harder? Have you seen what basketball players go through to hit a shot? There would be a 5'9 guy trying to do a layup over 3 guys who are over 6'8 and some players who are over 7 foot tall
Johonan andrew gomes and shooting off the dribble or fadeaways basketball is just more complex and fun than netball they can only pass and stand still after catching like whaaat
Insert Name Here I highly doubt that
@MrStig691 In Netball yes, but in basketball, no!
Thank you for the videos Ninh! I'm an American...a school teacher as well, and consider myself a lifelong learner. I am always researching, striving to learn something new every day. I have never ever heard of netball! Continued success to you!
Ah thank you very much! I appreciate the kind comments about this video. Check out my channel for more content like this :)
Why they all be playing James Harden defense???
Harden learnt the defense by taking reference from netball.
James Harden (defense or not) is pretty awesome though.
Noahd200 James harden is a better defender now in 2015 and 2017 was when his defense was at a all time low imo
They have to be 3 feet away from the person holding the ball
My problem with this sport is the 3 foot distance rule. From all that I've seen, it just results in what are essentially free shots for the goal shooter. The defending team can't really do anything for defense unless they happen to be able to jump 3 feet in the air. All the shot guarding in this video looks half hearted, and it seems that rule is exactly what's causing it.
That's one of the drawbacks for sure. It almost leaves the GA and GS uncontested when shooting for the net.
I believe you can still get in the way and distract them from shooting, and then rely on you getting the rebound quicker.
But yeah, the problem is very real.
@@NinhLyUK I think it's an issue lots of non-contact sports have. There's no issue with the idea behind it but I find it leads to a lot of problems with tight play since everyone's afraid to pick up an accidental foul. Having a 3 foot gap like that is almost comically sterile.
ZBTEproductions This is exactly why the sport is interesting, because the rules are not easy and can really affect how the game results. Its watching how those players can adapt the rules to their advantage which makes netball so interesting because you need to be smart about how you play. You can't be ill-disciplined or you'll be out of play for the majority of the match, but you can't be too disciplined to the point where you donuapply pressure.
ZBTEproductions they do that cuz other wise none of them would score cuz there ass
@@NinhLyUK just saying distracting the shooter is not allowed this is called intimidation
I’d like to see 7’1 Kareem Abdul Jabbar play this game
If he played goal attack or goal shooter - he'd just place it into the net.
What about Yao Ming? He’s HUGE
Sky Hook every single time.
People comparing basketball to netball fail to realize that netball has it's rules so that it can be played on grass or dirt by people in developing countries. Not everyone has a $30,000 hardwood floor to play on. I know women in Africa who have played netball almost their entire lives and they rarely play on a hardwood floor.
Exactly, yes!

D - League
One rule that is missing from this video is the method of restart. Netball is unique in that teams alternate the restart notwithstanding who scored.
Teams take turns on who starts with the centre pass. Usually this means that teams exchange goals but if you lose possession on your centre pass and your opponent scores, it’s their turn to restart so they get it.

Nah, it's not that bad. Takes a while but you learn the intricacies of this game quite quickly.
Its looks decent up until the shooting and have to stand 3 feet away
@@santiagoflorez5325 in basketball, moving the ball from one end of the court to the other is easy and boring. So much so that 3v3 basketball has been invented to cut that part out.
In netball, moving the ball from one end of the court to the other is the exciting part (with the other team trying to intercept passes). The shooting is pretty straight forward.
Imagine if there was no dribbling allowed in the first two thirds of the court in basketball. That would be one frantic exciting game.
Thank you for making this video, it helped me understand netball in such a short amount of time.

Ben H Believe it or not, Netball is the world's most popular female-only sport! It's predominantly played in Commonwealth countries such as England, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica etc.
I prefer basketball personally, but my sister used to play Netball at a high level.

i live in scotland, and its just to strange to me how people dont know about it!
Very Good! I am a Netball player myself and I was unaware about a "Short pass"
Netball has a lot of similarities with proto Women's Basketball whose rules were adapted by Senda Berenson at the end of the last century which also had zones, limit on player movement, limits on dribbling, and passing, and specific roles for players. Take away the back board and it was very much like Netball. I remember watching such a game in high school, though the zones had been decreased to two by 1938. A few years later in my mind sanity prevailed and almost overnight the standard men's game was adopted by 1970, No one misses the old game.
The only true women's Sports are Jelly Wrestling and Mud Wrestling or Pole Dancing
😁
Q: Why do female netballers always stop when one player gets the ball?
A: So we Men 😎🍻♂️ can all watch their Breasts Jiggle😍
And their Asses Wiggle🤩
LoL

thanks so much!! Im starting my first game with my friend that lives next to me (shes played it for AGES) and im pretty exited to play. Im pretty sure im gonna be a shooter bc she has a net taller than the original one and i still shoot perfectly
For those thinking it's like an easier version of Basketball, it's honestly not. As someone who has played both at state level ( and further for netball ), it is completely different and the rules and skills are the reason for that. And honestly it was a lot easier for me making the basketball team, then netball ( especially here in Australia since the competition in Netball is higher ). My sister who was more into Netball, played Basketball for one year and not only automatically became the best player on her team but also ran circles around other players who have played the sport for a lot longer then her. Netball requires a lot of agility, quick thinking, awareness and fitness depending on which level you play in. It is also a team sport that requires the whole seven players to win a game. There's is no 1v1 moments ( except for a toss up ) and the reason I don't shoot much in Netball ( even though I'm an all-rounder player ) is because there's no backboard. You will not believe how stressful and tiring it is as a shooter ( G.A & G.S ) having to work your way around the circle passing the ball back and forth with your teammates ( since you can't dribble or run with the ball ) to not only shake off the defenders but also get closer to that goal post, so it's easier for you to get that shot. Plus you still only have 3 seconds to make that shot as well. A lot of people really underestimate how intense this sport gets, it's not easy to pick up at first ( due to the rules ) and it will take you a bit to actually get decent at it. But once you do, it's really enjoyable to play.
Totally agree!
Stop lying. Netball is for chumps.
Yeah look at this exciting fast play at 3:26

Pretty clear the game was created as girls version of basketball. But now it's separate sport and girls/women play normal basketball too. Also worth mentioning, actually this game is much closer to original basketball, so back in the days boys and girls basketball rules would be very similar. But basketball developed to be very different from the original game and netball seems to be pretty much the same as it was in 19th century.
Yes, correct on all those points.
You are allowed to lift your landing foot off the ground, you just can't put it down again once you lift it off.
Ninh explains the Rules of Netball, the most popular female only sport played worldwide.
I'm shocked at the number of negative and narrow minded haters that are commenting on this video.
Netball is a good sport that is played professionally worldwide.
Yes, it's not basketball, and yes it's popular with females worldwide who prefer this to basketball - GET OVER IT!
I never said they couldn't. My point is that there are females who CHOOSE to play Netball over Basketball, not because they have the inability to play basketball - as per your original comment.
Yeah, but here's a take about sports. Men or women, not letting people run or use their athleticism to the fullest makes for a dumb sport. This is like trying to put water polo physics onto dry land and then adding in extra zones just to make it feel official and thought out.
No sport enjoys 5 offsides situations based on individuals. It's just silly and this is a B-Tier concept of a sport probably made by some idiot who thought women couldn't play actual sports.
Psst. Women can play real sports. I'd rather watch women's basketball, tennis, volleyball, softball (which, to be fair, I'd love a men's league, too), even niche stuff like women's lacrosse, or to be more international let's do field hockey. Those are all fantastic. This is silly and feels like something from a comedy sketch.
Netballs for pussies
Yeah I have no interest in watching it but people trashing it is dumb.
In Australias league, when there is 5 minutes left in each quarter, they have a rule called the supershot, so if you shoot it from the end of the shooting area, its 2 points
