    I work on cats day in day out not at a dealer or anything but I had no idea this tool existed!! always pulled piston and rods then used mt home made liner puller. next rebuild I am defiently going to be trying to use one of those would kill time like crazy in the long run!!! thanks man

      +Derrick Klassen They make them for every Cat engine we work on, you just pick the right bore and it should work. If the liner is really rusted you may still need the liner puller but that is the exception most of the time.

    Hey man getting ready to do a rebuild on a cat C-12 to go driving back over the road and I wanted to say thank you for all the videos. It is very helpful to see the differences from gas engines which I've done and even the differences from small diesel engines. Have a great day.

      +Emery Booker Thanks for watching, doing two C10 engines at the shop right now, which are basically the same thing as a C12. Not full rebuilds though, just engine swaps.

    Good video; but for anyone watching as an instructional video, it would be good to mention to brake clean the inside of the liner and use rags to suck up the fuel on top of the piston. For the cost of replacement liner puller rubbers, it's well worth a little prep to prevent swelling and damage to the rubber liner puller; and brake cleaning the liner helps the rubber bite and pull, instead of slipping and distorting.

    Interesting. I've done power assembly replacement in EMD locomotive engines. They have clamps that hold the liner down. Remove the clamps and thread an eyebolt into the top of the piston to pull everything out. Those assemblies are major heavy, a couple hundred pounds. You need a crane to move them.

    I follow your videos I find them very informational thank you , I was watching this and that happens to be the same engine that I am tearing down in the shop I thought the
    C- 11 was just a newer version of the C10 with emissions/ twin turbo but I found they made a lot of better upgrades with the cam followers instead of using aluminum casted hold Downs also I didn't know it has a slightly larger camshaft diameter than the C-10 I had to build a different driver

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 років тому

      +James Johnson I think this video is a C12 if I remember correctly. Yeah there are a lot of little changes between the C10/12 and the C13, but you can tell they are descendants. Thanks for watching them.

    • @AdeptApe

      It is a Cat tool, but OTC makes most of the Cat tooling, check with OTC. The tool is based on the cylinder bore. You could also use a liner puller, but they only pull the liner, so you would have to pull the piston first. You'll also need a liner installer to push a liner into its bore. Good luck on your International, I don't have much experience with them. Thanks for commenting.

    • @benhoward8910
      @benhoward8910 6 років тому

      I done a bunch of DT466s. We just use a port-a-power to pop the liners out form the bottom and use a piece of pipe some washers and a head bolt to put them back it. You don't need any special tool.

    I am the proud new owner of a Cummins NHC250.
    I know you work more so with modern diesels, but would you happen to have any advice in regard to some concerns.
    The truck starts up easy, even cold, but I worry it may have a bottom end problem.
    When cold, it hammers pretty loudly, and perhaps slightly when up to temp.
    Oil analysis came back okay on all metals except iron, which was somewhat high, although this oil was the oil it had when I bought the truck, and its history is unknown.
    The truck otherwise drives OK.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge in these videos!

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 років тому

      +zoidsfan777 I'm not familiar with that engine to say whether it is normal or not. It being an older engine it may just be fuel knock. The oil analysis coming back good is a good sign. You should cut the oil filter open and inspect the element for metal as well. How is the oil pressure? If the filter is clean, the oil pressure is good, and the oil analysis is good, then you are probably fine to run it, but it is up to you. If you think you have a bad bearing then you'd pretty much have to pull the rod and main bearings and inspect all of them.

    • @zoidsfan77
      @zoidsfan77 7 років тому

      Adept Ape Thanks for the response.
      What is fuel knock? Forgive my incompetence.
      The fuel may not be the best. It is at least two years old, and smells like solvent a bit. It is not gelled, and was treated with some sort of additive before it was parked.
      I filled the tank with fresh diesel, diluting it about 50%.
      I also added 2 quarts of new ATF, and a bottle of some diesel clean.
      It is an 78 gallon tank.
      I replaced the fuel filter as well.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 років тому

      +zoidsfan777 The fuel might be the cause then. Fuel knock is just the sound of Diesel fuel igniting, usually too early, too late, or unevenly during the combustion cycle. The old fuel can cause that, bad injectors, bad fuel pump, etc. I would try to get new fuel in it through dilution and running it or draining it off and putting new in. That may cause the knock to lessen.

    • @alexmatthews2332
      @alexmatthews2332 6 років тому

      I've heard those old Cummins had quite a cold fuel knock, I don't think there's much to worry about. How's it doing now?

    With these large industrial engines: would it be possible to keep them going for infinite amounts of time? Like most cars don't have cylender liners so in a rebuild will need boring out to keep in service.

  • @54321danfox

    Could you comment on how much that tool might cost, and whether the whole thing or just the rubber cylinder is specific to one make/model? I'm considering buying an older school bus to convert into a RV, and I really like the idea of cylinder liners/in-frame rebuildability, but if I have to spend a grand on that tool that would have to work into my thinking.

      +Big Foot Do you know the serial number? If it should be a LEE serial number. Also, we don't recommend rolling in new bearing anymore as you usually are putting more dirt into the engine and bearings are usually in decent shape between rebuilds.

      Its a baptism. We only have a few trusted engine guys. The rest of the guys are the bread and butter boys; Annual inspections, oil changes, suspension-brakes-steering, clutches and manual transmissions. My first was an MXS C15 in 2012. My service writer currently has had me doing all the volvo-mack and cummins coming through the door as the other guys only like the cat and detroit engines. My job next week is guiding a guy through a little ISL 8.9 in-frame rebuild to see if he can handle such an important job. And yes, hes getting baptised hahaha.

    It has 800K just did the water pump a week ago myself.....but its been consuming oil.....about 3 gallons every 10K.....I was thinking just getting new pistons and new bearings.....did the water bottle test, sent for and oil analysis everything came back normal. No oil leaks just a puff of black smoke upon start up. So im a little baffled. Everyone tells me all CATS consume oil .....worry when its a gallon every 500 miles.....Whats your advise or your thoughts.......thanks

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  8 років тому

      +Big Foot You probably are getting high blowby too if it's eating oil like that. Sounds like a rebuild is due. Cats don't use oil per se just worn ones. I would look at getting a platinum kit, that will have new cylinder packs, head, oil pump, head bolts, and bearings. It's more expensive but you'll basically have a new engine. Don't just change the pistons, you should change the cylinder packs as a unit. The liners only have a single oring, so not changing them risks a coolant leak in your engine after the rebuild. I think there is a 20% discount on parts right now for those kits, so check with your local dealer.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  8 років тому +1

      Thanks for commenting. The truck had a very bad vibration caused by the pistons having different weights because a previous mechanic had replaced a couple of the pistons with the wrong ones. Since the head had to be pulled and a couple of the cylinders replaced, the customer decided to change all of the packs. The piston and cylinder liners on Cat engines are matched so your supposed to replace them as a set. Hope this answers your question.

    I Have a C13 eng 09. There was pressure in radiator and I had to add coolant or water every 100 miles or so. No water mixed in oil. I removed thermostat but the problem continued. After checking the compressor and pre cooler and bubble check I suspected a crack head. Removed the head but it was OK, I rebuilt it anyways. Then removed the liners no sign of cracks. Now I am going to have to rebuilt the eng. I am wondering what else could be wrong? Can you solve this puzzle?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 років тому +1

      +Nader Leali Did the engine pass the bottle test? Was it bubbling or not? Did you test the radiator cap? It is possible your cap wasn't holding pressure and may have been pushing coolant out? A cracked ARD head could be leaking coolant into your exhaust and not leaking it into the engine.

    • @auztransport2422
      @auztransport2422 7 років тому

      Yes there was bubbles..Cap is OK, Now the mechanic tells me to replace the radiator as it might be bad due to use of Blue Devil. By the way Blue devil stopped the problem for 2 weeks.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 років тому

      +sunking2001 Some Diesels don't have liners so you would have to repair the cylinder like a car engine. Most of the Cats can be removed this way or by separating the piston then the liner.

    • @AdeptApe

      +moparmania86 A good question and yes they do, since the oring is basically just a normal, yet large, seal over time they can start dripping coolant, then it's time to pull the liners.
