This is the weirdest game on the Saturn. Absurd story, ridiculous voice acting, awkward animation -- it's such a treasure.

So about the 'no wind' thing. In Japan the wind is often associated with spirits and the divine, and curtains, chimes and pinwheels are often hung to catch the wind and usher in good luck. Considering this game was made by a Japanese studio I think this detail is meant to imply that the city is godless or forsaken by the spirits and/or heaven.
Probably something the localization team should have clarified for us dumb western players.
That and animating windmills probably was annoying
@@fattiger6957self deprecation is not as sexy as you were lead to believe.
@@fattiger6957 not having the same culture doesn't make "the west" dumb. There are many western customs, superstitions and religious beliefs that are/were misunderstood or completely unknown by the East, that doesn't make them dumb either.
So weird, I read this comment the moment he talked about the lack of wind in the video. Damn that's weird that's like the 3rd time that's happened to me.
The "I didn't throw it, friend." bit is genius lol. I'm going to use that from now on
That's an oldie but goodie. I actually like the woman's threat more, as it was delivered beautifully.
Butterflies symbolize human souls in Japanese culture, so I think that gives us a clue about some of the story. Same with the fact that the hour right when the sun sets but it's not entirely dark yet (called oumagatoki in Japanese) is when the spirits cross over to our world.
That's my favourite time of day!
Ah, that might explain a few things- I am reminded of a bunch of ghost games and so that I've played where twilight is when you can talk to spirits, and Kingdom Hearts with the eternal twilight town of all games. Now the REAL question is whether mysterious bald people named Anthony is also a reference to some obscure Japanese myth, or if that's just in the writer's own head.
😑👍
So there's a focus on transition between states - day and night, caterpillar & butterfly, except the former is stuck & never moved on, everything is still...
"twilight"?
I love how the main character's name is just Fred 😂
Fred might be one of my favorite video game characters of all time.
@@dungeonchill Agreed very relatable
Fuckin Fred 🤦♂️
I feel like people that know Free say that a lot lol
i had a cat named Fred once, he was an asshole
Aren't most cats?
16:12 LOL this reminds me of Silent Hill after you had killed several monsters, and seen horrible things, one of the cutscenes James is like "Something STrange is Going on Here". ha ha ha NO SHIT! Damn how I miss 90's games. I still remember the Legendary dialogue from the Original Resident Evil.
"You Were Almost a Jill Sandwich"
"Here Jill take this lockpick since you are the master of unlocking"
I really miss the days of bad voice acting. So many memorable lines. Those RE ones are the best!
Don't forget Magneto, master of magnet, welcoming you to die.
Resident evil is a perfect example of "hey you know English get in that recording booth"
iris' death scene from mega man is my favorite instance of terrible voice acting
@@kasocool2812they hired Americans who all knew English. They weren’t Japanese voice actors in Re1.
That kid's voice you're remembering might be Susan Blu. She was in tons of 80s and 90s Saturday Morning Cartoons. She's most well known as the voice of Arcee in The Transformers Animated Movie & Show, and her work on Jem.
Kid sounds like the kid from Shenmue
Sounded like Bart Simpson to me
@@coolcat33333 I heard a little bit of Milhouse, tbh.
"Misty... town?!"
Ah, Fred... What a loveable idiot.
I get the feeling he is made, maybe sub-consciously by the animators a bit like Kyle McGloughlin from Twin Peaks.@@dungeonchill
"Silent...hill?"
Fred is the kind of guy who asks how much the 20$ ticket costs.
“City of moons, eh? City of fools!”
God damn, that’s just too damn golden!
Finally another channel that tackles the same type of games as GrimBeard. and with style too! Quickly becoming one of my fav channels. Thanks for what you do!
Oh thanks so much. I love GrimBeard as well. He was one of the reasons I decided to start making videos!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt a similarity. In a good way, without a doubt. Hopey, they'll end up best buds. Making videos and hunting ghosts.
It's almost like GrimBeard has started a second channel but without telling anyone
Personally I think DungeonChill is infinitely cooler than GrimBeard.
You should also check out RagnarRox as well.
I'm introducing myself that way from now on
"The name that they call me is Chris."
I love 3D from this era too. I think it benefits horror actually. Gives it a Lynchian quality
All done in Shade 3D btw, one of Japan's oldest domestic 3D packages...and still in development today.
My youtube recommendations have really gone to shit lately but it Finally dropped a gem like this on my lap. Excellent work friend, looking forward to seeing you blow up in a year's time.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video
I have never related to a random persons comment more than this
A year later I am getting his stuff. The blow up is real.
Wow you called it his channel has grown a ton in a year. His videos are blowing up a lot I just came across his channel with his Baroque video.
It's utterly unbelievable how less than a year ago I entered the Sega Saturn rabbit hole (especially Japanese-only games) and this channel starts dealing with this obscure material just a few months later. Please keep 'em coming, this content is amazing and it's also an important work of rediscovery and sharing!
"It's like the writer didn't know where all of this was going when he wrote it"
I think a lot of people would be surprised by how often that happens. It's just part of the process is fixing those crooked pathways once everything does end up coming together. Sometimes they get left in though and no one realizes, and I imagine it can happen a lot easier with games where so much of it is a group effort.
7:15 This feels like an old YGOTAS bit, and I love it
Also 10:32 , I think that's Lani Minella, who voiced woman and boy character in a LOT of old games (Rouge the Bat from Sonic is probably her most notable). She was the female equivalent of Steve Blum at the time lol. It also could be Mona Marshall or Tress MacNeille.
he sounds a lot like milhouse from the simpsons
@@spikedwallmanyeah, I'm pretty sure that's her...
The kid sounds like a mix of Milhouse and Bart.
Hahaha I recognized it then when I seen your reply I was like yeah that reminded me of Milhouse
This was a game I grew up and with and it’s pretty much always in the back of my mind. The story, characters and works are so strange yet cozy that they really stick with you.
Great video, I love obscure forgotten games like this!
Thank you! There will be more like this in the future!
Obscure? Not really. At one point in late '97 they pretty much gave away Torico for free here in PAL land, because nobody wanted it.
Forgotten? Maybe that's for the better...
They also developed Iblard Laputa no Kaeru Machi on Playstation. It's like LSD Dream Emulator but less trippy and more atmospheric.
That’s one I’ll have to check out. Atmospheric seems to be what they’re good at.
Dude wants to live forever. Dude is also bored.
My guy, do you understand how this works? 😂
Right?!
"zaboo? what are you, the long lost Kratt sister?"
...that's the best I came up with. Zabomafoo deep cut
I was thinking more along the lines of, "Baboo's long lost sister, across time, space, and species."
As the monkey from Aladdin is about the only other piece of art that I'm aware of with a similar name.
I love Lunacy. There's kind of an evolutionary dead-end with games like it, the Hidden Souls games, D, Enemy Zero, etc., and their more retrictive nature gives them more focus than the modern "walking simulator" games that go for similar atmosphere. I play it every few years after I've forgotten enough of its puzzles. Good to see it get attention!
The first game I ever played on my PS1 was Pandemonium, a 2.5D platformer from 1996, and one of the only other games on the system to use Password saving, like Crash 1. It's a relatively short and simple game with 17 levels and 3 boss fight levels, but it makes really good use of 3D camera perspectives throughout the game. It has a magical & whimsical medieval high-fantasy visual aesthetic juxtaposed by some rather silly and cartoony enemy types. And also Nikki reminds me of that girl from The Fifth Element lol
these kinds of games from this era really have a way of sticking with you. Something about the otherworldly and uncanny nature of all the elements that make them up causes them to be haunting, hilarious and unforgettable. This was a great video.
The voice acting in this is a work art. 10/10 gags about during the review too, excellent delivery.
4:35 He's got a key because he's a regular. Checks himself in and out most of the time. It's the same joke that they used with Otis the town drunk from the old Andy Griffith show. :)
I love videos about these surreal niche games that hardly anybody played, I'm glad you're providing content like that!
I really enjoyed this video a ton... it actually helped me get through some bad emotional stuff I was going through. Your perspective and voice are pretty great for talking about games like this on youtube, you give a really relaxing vibe... good channel name : )
The "obscure games" that I'm a big fan of are things like Vagrant Story and Shadow Hearts that have gotten some good coverage recently... you could probably do a good video on Killer 7... I don't know, Azure Dreams lol? Front Mission 3?
Siren (the original PS2 one) is a great game that isn't talked about enough, though again, it has gotten coverage here and there recently... you're a better expert on obscure games than I am probably... Rygar, the NES one... though the PS2 one was pretty great and obscure too. Definitely like you making longer videos like this.
that kids voice, youre right, I am thinking early simpsons? Milhouse?
going through your 'popular vids' playlist and while each has been a banger, this one has to be my favorite. So glad I got recommended your channel!
I’m excited to find this channel! Look forward to hopefully exploring many more of your longer videos!
One of my favorites. The fact that you can actually control who lives and dies is what makes it so good. I just played through it again 2 years ago. Music score is the best on the Saturn.
Keep these videos coming man!
I saw clips of this game before but never an in-depth look.
Good stuff.
Dude. I got this game, and D (for PS1) in the same week as a young teen. Fit right in with my David Lynch obsession at the time.
These are the channels YT needs much more of, I am so glad I stumbled upon your content, great videos and am in the process of viewing all of them
Very entertaining video. The Saturn is such a mysterious console.
There’s a lot of strange little gems on there.
Not really, ps1 has some weird stuff too like exclusive game lsd dream emulator
Oh yeah! I mean, every console has awesome weirdo games. I think the Saturn's mysteriousness comes from the fact that I don't think I've ever even seen a Saturn before! That and its weird graphical processing. It's like it's from a different world.
😑🎮
The US and PAL lineup of the Saturn is about as tame and "normie" friendly as you can get. Some of the Japanese stuff might have looked weird to someone importing in the late 90s and early 2000s, but by todays standards it's nothing too wild.
10:36 I think the voice actor is Pamela Hayden, she voices Milton in the Simpsons 🙂
It has to be Pamela Hayden! And not to be an um, actually, I believe he means Milhouse.
Whats that little wiener kids name?
Great video, I love videos about obscure weird games, have you ever played Plague Of The Moon? It's an old DOS adventure/horror game where you play as a witch, I played it years ago and found it unsettling and creepy, far as I know there's only a shareware version available, although there is an advertisement ingame referring where to buy the full game, strangely enough it seems no one did or if they did they kept the full game off the internet, there's not much info about it either, rather Mysterious indeed
Never heard of that one, but you have me intrigued. I'm going to hunt it down.
As a follow up, I found the shareware version and tried it out. It's awesome. This has video potential. Thank you for letting me know about this!
@@dungeonchill no problem man, a video on it would be great, I sure would watch it n_n
When I was a kid I played a game called "Spud!" it's on Steam these days so I eventually finished it, but it's a weird one, you play as Santa's nephew (the titular Spud) and you go to visit him but he's been abducted by his nemesis. So you then gather up the reindeer and try to go rescue him. Doesn't sound all that odd, but the reindeer are anthropomorphised, one is in the shower and you gotta get them out, and all of the game overs are animated (there's a compilation of them all on here somewhere). It wasn't really a kid's game but I played it when I was about 6. It came out in 96 or so and was a point and click with some adventure game logic, and on the box it talked about having "look-around-o'vision" which was actually kinda similar to some first person dungeon crawlers (although it's just an adventure). It can't be that obscure if it's on Steam but nonetheless whenever I mention it to anyone I'm met with confused looks xD
I've been slowly making my way through your video backlog for the last few days and I'm loving hearing you talk about all these older obscure games! If you're ever at a loss for games to cover, I think Alundra would make for a fun video. That and Guardian's Crusade are a couple of my fav PS1 games that I don't see many people talk about!
For 1996 graphics were actually quite good
I love longer form video essays and reviews so I'm glad to see your work moving more in that direction. This is an interesting game that I did not know existed, and stuff like this is always fun to watch. In the future, more comprehensive summaries wouldn't be unwelcome either. :)
Just found your channel and I'm already binging all of your videos. XD Excellent vibe.
Graffiti Kingdom was one of my favorite PS2 games growing up, but no one talks about it despite the fact that it had some mechanics I haven't seen recreated since (such as drawing your own characters in 3D.)
This was a good video m8. I got the feeling you watch Grimbeard as well
Yeah, Grimbeard is a big inspiration for starting to make videos. Definitely taken a few tricks from him but hoping to develop my own style as I keep making vids. Glad you enjoyed it!
How have you been around here less than a year, and your content is so stellar?!
You have a new subscriber, and I truly believe you will hit more milestones before the years end.
My new favourite youtube channel fr fr, also you've probably heard of or made a video on it by now but shadow of memories for the ps2, I think it was called shadow of fate in USA - very cool little murder mystery with time shenangians and some similarities to this game
The patrons just voted on that for the next video.
Came across this recently but I actually saw a Let's Play of this- it was definitely the kind of game that takes you ages to go through simply due ot all the clicks you have to do just to get around the town... but the atmosphere, especially to someone who grew up with this style of gameplay, is truly spectacular, jank voiceacting and everything. Might have been nice to at least beifly introudce and give your opinions on the towns people and their various little side quests, as it was pretty hilarious to have their deaths play up as a funny montage when you don't even know anything about them... then again, maybe that was the point.
Your channel reminds me of a little Ross's Game Dungeon with a bit of Grimbeard too. Good stuff, more plz
i think you did good coverage on this game. i only played it for a bit and got stuck so i never went back to it but i always loved the town music. but as for it being the weirdest saturn game? idk i think Pu·Li·Ru·La is way weirder for the 3rd stage alone. same with Mini Skirt Police if you just want to count an exclusives only
Those games you mentioned are definitely more bizarre. I don’t know. Something about Lunacy just struck me. The fact that it’s so low key and strange. Maybe “most mysterious” would have been a better title.
@@dungeonchill oh its all good I mean it still a strange game for what it is. Also I enjoyed your wachenroder video. One of my all time favorites on the saturn
Nice. Glad you liked that one. I’m doing Bulk Slash next, and I’ve got more Saturn games planned in the future since it’s one of my favorite consoles
UA-cam suddenly recommended your channel, and i loved your content, binge watching it right now!
That little kid with the voice his voice sounds the same as the kids in Shenmue and I swear I've heard him in other games too
😅👍
Subbed. Love these old game reviews takes me back to my childhood. 😁👍🏻🇬🇧
Love this weird forgotten games. Thanks for the vidéo
In the Game Grumps’ playthrough of this game, Arin suspected the kid was Milhouse.
RE: 10:38 the"I'm going to be a traveller, mom"-kid and the "familiar voice actor", are you sure you're not thinking of Nancy Cartwright's Bart Simpson? That's what that VO actor reminded me of (highly doubt it's her)
what a gem of a channel - love your voice, keep up the great work!
Great editing and ya got jokes too! Subbed! :P
Hey, thanks so much!
I just couldn't stop laughing throughout this, your humor is so great! Awesome video, I love looks at old games!
I've never even touched a Saturn or an FMV game, but this review had me laughing out loud so many times! Great review, and I love learning about obscure games
I think this is the first time I've ever heard someone say "cellophane tape" instead of "cellotape"
I suspect the weird dialogue is just bad bad localization. The localization team probably didn't have a writer who could take translations and rewrite it into natural dialogue. I'd bet things sounded more realistic in the original Japanese.
good job. I too enjoy grimbeard, and your content is similar, but stands on it's own. Well done!
This game is so underrated. The atmosphere is sublime.
Mist and wind don't go well together, that's maybe why there's no wind
Man i'm loving your chanel! Have you heard of Harvester? i love playing that broken game
Thanks for the love. And yeah, Harvester is a classic! It’s on my list to cover at some point.
"Im so sorry I have to do this. DIIIE!"
Really liking your channel. I think my fav weird obscure game from the era is Sentient, on the PS1
Great video. Have you ever played Juggernaut (ps1)? It's a weird adventure game that this vaguely reminded me of
I have! There's a black and white shot of a dead woman with her mouth open from that game that I always use as a reaction image. It's much longer than Lunacy though, so it's on my list for when I can make time for it.
26:03 please review a pretty obscure PS1 sci-fi horror game called Overblood. It fits perfectly with the type of games youve been reviewing. Also it has the most hilarious death scream I've ever heard in a game. Btw I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it, great stuff. You definitely earned my sub.
The only adventure game I've played was Museum Madness. Don't know if anyone remembers that. Lunacy looks interesting. I prefer the oddball nature of older games rather than modern day "realism."
Yeah, older games just had more room to breathe and experiment. When your budget gets into the millions of dollars, more often than not creativity starts to starve.
@@dungeonchill if you want an extreme example of that, check out "Skullmonkeys" for the PS1. It's a claymation platformer with one of the best and weirdest soundtracks I've ever heard. It's technically a sequel to the (also claymation) point-and-click adventure game "The Neverhood", but it can be played on its own. I think it'd be up your alley.
Pretty sure "the name that they call me is Fred" is an almost direct translation from Japanese. It is a very literal language, so when directly translated, you get a lot of stuff like that.
I know it’s probably a completely different voice actor, but little Hal’s voice reminds me of Chiaotzu from dragon ball/dbz. 10:32
Much like the kid in the shop, I too yearn to be a homeless face tatted amnesiac traveler one day.
"Yes I am Fred the traveler"
10:34 it seems little Hal doesn't leave misty town much
I loved the parts with Anthony in the beginning. It looks like you made it seem like you were using Anthony as an avatar
I like your channel bro. I like learning about these old games
I gave Lunacy a whirl after watching this video a few weeks ago. I didn't make it far though. It's a bittersweet feeling being able to so easily demystify Saturn games I only ever read about during my teens in the 90s since I chose PSX. I can't say I enjoyed what I played but the vibes were pleasant AF, like flipping through an issue of GameFan while sci-fi channel plays in the background.
That’s really the point of a lot of the games I cover. I know not all of them are great to play, but they’re so fascinating in other aspects. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video!
@@dungeonchill Honestly, what made me stop playing was just how damn hypnotizing the music and visuals were together. Like digital ambien, lol. And thanks for the great content, looking forward to see what you cover in the future.
Hey there, new sub here. I really love weird games, so this is my kind of content, thank you for the video. Never heard of this game but also never had a saturn either.. I saw you already covered echo night, are you up to cover the second game? It has a fans translation. Also maybe galerians or overblood could be interesting to cover but I don't know if they're that weird
I used to have this game when I bought Sega Saturn back then, I really enjoyed this game coz of its atmosphere and story, video graphics where very good compare to other games at the time. Have kind on nostalgia for this game ❤️
Polygons were held together with spit on PS1 however on N64 they acted properly even if crude compared to today.
Just compare Cool Boarders for PS1 with 1080 Snowboarding for N64, to see a big difference in quality.
Love the obscure PS1/Saturn games.. would love to see some more Dreamcast titles
Put the clay sculptures they call characters back in the kiln. They need to bake until they explode
Happened to watch the Game Grumps play through this game a few months ago. Completely different vibes from this video essay, but such an odd game regardless.
😑👍
The PlayStation was my first real console as a kid. I had a NES and SNES but they were a bit before my time and I never got into them much. As a result I have such a fondness and nostalgia for this age of early FMV and awkward localizations.
They don't make them like this anymore. In many ways they just can't; localization has become way too professional.
Just discovered your channel today. Thanks, I'll be marathoning your stuff.
I know you were inspired by Grim Beard, and perhaps it's because I found you first, but your content is definitely better, in my opinion. Keep up the good work!
skipped the spoilers, 'cause now my partner and i are gonna play it! we'll be back to share our thoughts, once we're done, hehe
Ambrosia Software was my jam, my dad having fallen for the "Think Different" meme (and who could blame him, the advertising was excellent). But Performa-era Mac (OS ~7 or so) was a small community, where we lived.
Even so, Escape Velocity was peak space sim. The feeling of getting your first Kestrel, the deep love for the sturdy Argosy class, whose hides has protected you from the cold of the abyss for more light years than you could remember. Salute, boys.
Sunless Skies (FailBetter Studios) is the only thing that comes close (also excellent in its own right).
"I didn't throw it, friend" lmao! love the dub, your videos are all great, love the atmosphere, kinda feels like home, for retro horror fans like me.
You think I wouldn't notice that computer screen. Nice World of Horror desktop. Great game.
You should check out the game Kowloon's Gate (if it's out there somewhere). I think it'd be right up your alley.
I need to play this. This heavily reminds me of Shadow of Memories.
The kid's voice sound just like every kid's voice in Shenmue
New fan here. I love the videos. Don't stop doing what you do. Would be interested to see what you think of the Dreamcast game Rent-a-Hero No 1. Originally a Japanese release, but if you look you'll find an English translation. No pressure.
I’ll add it to the list! Been getting tons of recommendations from people, on top of the list I’d already made for myself. The good thing is, I don’t think I’ll ever run out of ideas for videos. Welcome aboard!
That's cool bro but when is King's Field?
Soon...
Antony is like John Locke in Lost.
Speaking about Lost - the Mist also checks out :D
2:20 - is it really, because old times televisions had a natural blur so just reproducing them in monitors nowadays makes it look actually a lot worse than they should.
it was like natural anti-aliasing
This rules! Great video, glad you got recommended on my feed!
Thank you, amazing video for this weird game. Everything was great, nice tone, nice rhythm, everything is well balanced. Was very entertaining from start to finish.
I played this back in the day, but couldn't fully understand the plot since my English was basic back then. Still, it was a fun game to play during the weekend. Played it again years ago once I found my old saturn. Understanding how back then, having good localisation and good voice acting wasn't common, I got past the weirdness of it. It was still fun to play, especially trying to save the entire town part.
Nice video 🙂
Have you played deep fear, that resident evil clone on the saturn?
