So about the 'no wind' thing. In Japan the wind is often associated with spirits and the divine, and curtains, chimes and pinwheels are often hung to catch the wind and usher in good luck. Considering this game was made by a Japanese studio I think this detail is meant to imply that the city is godless or forsaken by the spirits and/or heaven.
@@fattiger6957 not having the same culture doesn't make "the west" dumb. There are many western customs, superstitions and religious beliefs that are/were misunderstood or completely unknown by the East, that doesn't make them dumb either.
So weird, I read this comment the moment he talked about the lack of wind in the video. Damn that's weird that's like the 3rd time that's happened to me.
Butterflies symbolize human souls in Japanese culture, so I think that gives us a clue about some of the story. Same with the fact that the hour right when the sun sets but it's not entirely dark yet (called oumagatoki in Japanese) is when the spirits cross over to our world.
Ah, that might explain a few things- I am reminded of a bunch of ghost games and so that I've played where twilight is when you can talk to spirits, and Kingdom Hearts with the eternal twilight town of all games. Now the REAL question is whether mysterious bald people named Anthony is also a reference to some obscure Japanese myth, or if that's just in the writer's own head.
So there's a focus on transition between states - day and night, caterpillar & butterfly, except the former is stuck & never moved on, everything is still...
That kid's voice you're remembering might be Susan Blu. She was in tons of 80s and 90s Saturday Morning Cartoons. She's most well known as the voice of Arcee in The Transformers Animated Movie & Show, and her work on Jem.
16:12 LOL this reminds me of Silent Hill after you had killed several monsters, and seen horrible things, one of the cutscenes James is like "Something STrange is Going on Here". ha ha ha NO SHIT! Damn how I miss 90's games. I still remember the Legendary dialogue from the Original Resident Evil. Please keep 'em coming, this content is amazing and it's also an important work of rediscovery and sharing!

"It's like the writer didn't know where all of this was going when he wrote it" I think a lot of people would be surprised by how often that happens. It's just part of the process is fixing those crooked pathways once everything does end up coming together. Sometimes they get left in though and no one realizes, and I imagine it can happen a lot easier with games where so much of it is a group effort.

Obscure? Not really. At one point in late '97 they pretty much gave away Torico for free here in PAL land, because nobody wanted it. Forgotten? Maybe that's for the better...
The first game I ever played on my PS1 was Pandemonium, a 2.5D platformer from 1996, and one of the only other games on the system to use Password saving, like Crash 1. It's a relatively short and simple game with 17 levels and 3 boss fight levels, but it makes really good use of 3D camera perspectives throughout the game. It has a magical & whimsical medieval high-fantasy visual aesthetic juxtaposed by some rather silly and cartoony enemy types. And also Nikki reminds me of that girl from The Fifth Element lol
these kinds of games from this era really have a way of sticking with you. Something about the otherworldly and uncanny nature of all the elements that make them up causes them to be haunting, hilarious and unforgettable. This was a great video.
I love Lunacy. There's kind of an evolutionary dead-end with games like it, the Hidden Souls games, D, Enemy Zero, etc., and their more retrictive nature gives them more focus than the modern "walking simulator" games that go for similar atmosphere. I play it every few years after I've forgotten enough of its puzzles. Good to see it get attention!
I really enjoyed this video a ton... it actually helped me get through some bad emotional stuff I was going through. Your perspective and voice are pretty great for talking about games like this on youtube, you give a really relaxing vibe... good channel name : ) The "obscure games" that I'm a big fan of are things like Vagrant Story and Shadow Hearts that have gotten some good coverage recently... you could probably do a good video on Killer 7... I don't know, Azure Dreams lol? Front Mission 3? Siren (the original PS2 one) is a great game that isn't talked about enough, though again, it has gotten coverage here and there recently... you're a better expert on obscure games than I am probably... Rygar, the NES one... though the PS2 one was pretty great and obscure too. Definitely like you making longer videos like this.
One of my favorites. The fact that you can actually control who lives and dies is what makes it so good. I just played through it again 2 years ago. Music score is the best on the Saturn.
One obscure horror game I really like is Agartha for the Sega Dreamcast! It is a very obscure game, mostly because it was never finished. The company that was developing the game had shut down some time ago, but the games remaining files are still available to actually boot up a playable prototype version of the game. It was focused on a human character who traveled to the subterranean town of Agartha which is based on Romanian culture. It would be really cool if you checked it out. You can’t actually accomplish or get story parts of the game though, but from the cutscenes, it looks like a very cool game for you to dissect the story of :)
When I was a kid I played a game called "Spud!" it's on Steam these days so I eventually finished it, but it's a weird one, you play as Santa's nephew (the titular Spud) and you go to visit him but he's been abducted by his nemesis. So you then gather up the reindeer and try to go rescue him. Doesn't sound all that odd, but the reindeer are anthropomorphised, one is in the shower and you gotta get them out, and all of the game overs are animated (there's a compilation of them all on here somewhere). It wasn't really a kid's game but I played it when I was about 6. It came out in 96 or so and was a point and click with some adventure game logic, and on the box it talked about having "look-around-o'vision" which was actually kinda similar to some first person dungeon crawlers (although it's just an adventure). It can't be that obscure if it's on Steam but nonetheless whenever I mention it to anyone I'm met with confused looks xD
Great video, I love videos about obscure weird games, have you ever played Plague Of The Moon? It's an old DOS adventure/horror game where you play as a witch, I played it years ago and found it unsettling and creepy, far as I know there's only a shareware version available, although there is an advertisement ingame referring where to buy the full game, strangely enough it seems no one did or if they did they kept the full game off the internet, there's not much info about it either, rather Mysterious indeed

I've been slowly making my way through your video backlog for the last few days and I'm loving hearing you talk about all these older obscure games! If you're ever at a loss for games to cover, I think Alundra would make for a fun video. That and Guardian's Crusade are a couple of my fav PS1 games that I don't see many people talk about!
RE: 10:38 the"I'm going to be a traveller, mom"-kid and the "familiar voice actor", are you sure you're not thinking of Nancy Cartwright's Bart Simpson? That's what that VO actor reminded me of (highly doubt it's her)
Came across this recently but I actually saw a Let's Play of this- it was definitely the kind of game that takes you ages to go through simply due ot all the clicks you have to do just to get around the town... but the atmosphere, especially to someone who grew up with this style of gameplay, is truly spectacular, jank voiceacting and everything. Might have been nice to at least beifly introudce and give your opinions on the towns people and their various little side quests, as it was pretty hilarious to have their deaths play up as a funny montage when you don't even know anything about them... then again, maybe that was the point.
Oh yeah! I mean, every console has awesome weirdo games. I think the Saturn's mysteriousness comes from the fact that I don't think I've ever even seen a Saturn before! That and its weird graphical processing. It's like it's from a different world.
The US and PAL lineup of the Saturn is about as tame and "normie" friendly as you can get. Some of the Japanese stuff might have looked weird to someone importing in the late 90s and early 2000s, but by todays standards it's nothing too wild.
@@Dr.W.Kruegerenemy zero, D, Torico. All released in every territory in the west. The western library is more than great and unique compared to other systems
i think you did good coverage on this game. i only played it for a bit and got stuck so i never went back to it but i always loved the town music. but as for it being the weirdest saturn game? idk i think Pu·Li·Ru·La is way weirder for the 3rd stage alone. same with Mini Skirt Police if you just want to count an exclusives only
Those games you mentioned are definitely more bizarre. I don’t know. Something about Lunacy just struck me. The fact that it’s so low key and strange. Maybe “most mysterious” would have been a better title.
@@dungeonchill oh its all good I mean it still a strange game for what it is. Also I enjoyed your wachenroder video. One of my all time favorites on the saturn
I've never even touched a Saturn or an FMV game, but this review had me laughing out loud so many times! Great review, and I love learning about obscure games
Yeah, Grimbeard is a big inspiration for starting to make videos. Definitely taken a few tricks from him but hoping to develop my own style as I keep making vids. Glad you enjoyed it!
I love longer form video essays and reviews so I'm glad to see your work moving more in that direction. This is an interesting game that I did not know existed, and stuff like this is always fun to watch. In the future, more comprehensive summaries wouldn't be unwelcome either. :)
26:03 please review a pretty obscure PS1 sci-fi horror game called Overblood. It fits perfectly with the type of games youve been reviewing. Also it has the most hilarious death scream I've ever heard in a game. Btw I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it, great stuff. You definitely earned my sub.
Growing up my Aunt had a FMV adventure game that I would always play called 'Connections: It's a Mind Game'. Edutainment based on some show I never watched. You go through different time periods, I want to say, picking up inventions using them to solve puzzles and then making 'connections' of one item to another to escape the area.
My new favourite youtube channel fr fr, also you've probably heard of or made a video on it by now but shadow of memories for the ps2, I think it was called shadow of fate in USA - very cool little murder mystery with time shenangians and some similarities to this game
I have! There's a black and white shot of a dead woman with her mouth open from that game that I always use as a reaction image. It's much longer than Lunacy though, so it's on my list for when I can make time for it.
Just found your channel and I'm already binging all of your videos. XD Excellent vibe. Graffiti Kingdom was one of my favorite PS2 games growing up, but no one talks about it despite the fact that it had some mechanics I haven't seen recreated since (such as drawing your own characters in 3D.)
The only adventure game I've played was Museum Madness. Don't know if anyone remembers that. Lunacy looks interesting. I prefer the oddball nature of older games rather than modern day "realism."
Yeah, older games just had more room to breathe and experiment. When your budget gets into the millions of dollars, more often than not creativity starts to starve.
@@dungeonchill if you want an extreme example of that, check out "Skullmonkeys" for the PS1. It's a claymation platformer with one of the best and weirdest soundtracks I've ever heard. It's technically a sequel to the (also claymation) point-and-click adventure game "The Neverhood", but it can be played on its own. I think it'd be up your alley.
I suspect the weird dialogue is just bad bad localization. The localization team probably didn't have a writer who could take translations and rewrite it into natural dialogue. I'd bet things sounded more realistic in the original Japanese.
Thank you, amazing video for this weird game. Everything was great, nice tone, nice rhythm, everything is well balanced. Was very entertaining from start to finish.
Ambrosia Software was my jam, my dad having fallen for the "Think Different" meme (and who could blame him, the advertising was excellent). But Performa-era Mac (OS ~7 or so) was a small community, where we lived. Even so, Escape Velocity was peak space sim. The feeling of getting your first Kestrel, the deep love for the sturdy Argosy class, whose hides has protected you from the cold of the abyss for more light years than you could remember. Salute, boys. Sunless Skies (FailBetter Studios) is the only thing that comes close (also excellent in its own right).
I gave Lunacy a whirl after watching this video a few weeks ago. I didn't make it far though. It's a bittersweet feeling being able to so easily demystify Saturn games I only ever read about during my teens in the 90s since I chose PSX. I can't say I enjoyed what I played but the vibes were pleasant AF, like flipping through an issue of GameFan while sci-fi channel plays in the background.
That’s really the point of a lot of the games I cover. I know not all of them are great to play, but they’re so fascinating in other aspects. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video!
@@dungeonchill Honestly, what made me stop playing was just how damn hypnotizing the music and visuals were together. Like digital ambien, lol. And thanks for the great content, looking forward to see what you cover in the future.
Pretty sure "the name that they call me is Fred" is an almost direct translation from Japanese. It is a very literal language, so when directly translated, you get a lot of stuff like that.
The PlayStation was my first real console as a kid. I had a NES and SNES but they were a bit before my time and I never got into them much. As a result I have such a fondness and nostalgia for this age of early FMV and awkward localizations. They don't make them like this anymore. In many ways they just can't; localization has become way too professional. Just discovered your channel today. Thanks, I'll be marathoning your stuff.
I used to have this game when I bought Sega Saturn back then, I really enjoyed this game coz of its atmosphere and story, video graphics where very good compare to other games at the time. Have kind on nostalgia for this game ❤️
Bonus points for your PC 98 shot having been an image for 46 Okunen Monogatari- better known as the original, way more complicated EVO game, before it was completely redone for the SNES!
after watching a lot of your content im really getting this sense that the developers of these games in this era really knew the 3D character models looked creepy and just leaned into the whole thing by making them weirder yet (in terms of dialogue, mannerisms, etc.)
I really appreaciate you having the balls not to add a bunch of gimmicky attempts to hook viewers like most content creators do. You know like cringey jokes that come and break the flow every now and then. Overusage of sound effects. Generally anything particularly memey. Recurring things that are in every video but are pointless such as references to some pop culture thing. All that kind of crap. You used jokes and other things to stave away monotony, but you based them on the actual content you were making and you didn't make them in this cringey unskillfully over the top "hey look at me im a nerd isnt it wonderful that its ok to be a nerd now?" way (no its not okay because cringe is painful to witness). Your videos are well done man and they pander to an audience with brains not to the lowest demoninator. They show no signs of being attempts at cash grabbing, they seem like genuine works of art to me. So this gets a like and I'm considering following. Will check more videos.
Thanks for the kind words. I only want to do things my way, and it’s good to hear it aligns with a style that you dig too. Hope you enjoy the other videos if you decide to check them out.
I played this back in the day, but couldn't fully understand the plot since my English was basic back then. Still, it was a fun game to play during the weekend. Played it again years ago once I found my old saturn. Understanding how back then, having good localisation and good voice acting wasn't common, I got past the weirdness of it. It was still fun to play, especially trying to save the entire town part.
I know you were inspired by Grim Beard, and perhaps it's because I found you first, but your content is definitely better, in my opinion. Keep up the good work!
Polygons were held together with spit on PS1 however on N64 they acted properly even if crude compared to today. Just compare Cool Boarders for PS1 with 1080 Snowboarding for N64, to see a big difference in quality.
Happened to watch the Game Grumps play through this game a few months ago. Completely different vibes from this video essay, but such an odd game regardless.
2:20 - is it really, because old times televisions had a natural blur so just reproducing them in monitors nowadays makes it look actually a lot worse than they should. it was like natural anti-aliasing

Whats that little wiener kids name?

Very entertaining video. The Saturn is such a mysterious console.
There’s a lot of strange little gems on there.
Oh yeah! I mean, every console has awesome weirdo games. I think the Saturn's mysteriousness comes from the fact that I don't think I've ever even seen a Saturn before! That and its weird graphical processing. It's like it's from a different world.
😑🎮
The US and PAL lineup of the Saturn is about as tame and "normie" friendly as you can get. Some of the Japanese stuff might have looked weird to someone importing in the late 90s and early 2000s, but by todays standards it's nothing too wild.
@@Dr.W.Kruegerenemy zero, D, Torico. All released in every territory in the west. The western library is more than great and unique compared to other systems
In the Game Grumps’ playthrough of this game, Arin suspected the kid was Milhouse.
i think you did good coverage on this game. i only played it for a bit and got stuck so i never went back to it but i always loved the town music. but as for it being the weirdest saturn game? idk i think Pu·Li·Ru·La is way weirder for the 3rd stage alone. same with Mini Skirt Police if you just want to count an exclusives only
Those games you mentioned are definitely more bizarre.
Nice. Glad you liked that one. I’m doing Bulk Slash next, and I’ve got more Saturn games planned in the future since it’s one of my favorite consoles
I've never even touched a Saturn or an FMV game, but this review had me laughing out loud so many times! Great review, and I love learning about obscure games
This was a good video m8. I got the feeling you watch Grimbeard as well
Yeah, Grimbeard is a big inspiration for starting to make videos. Definitely taken a few tricks from him but hoping to develop my own style as I keep making vids. Glad you enjoyed it!
UA-cam suddenly recommended your channel, and i loved your content, binge watching it right now!
I just couldn't stop laughing throughout this, your humor is so great! Awesome video, I love looks at old games!
I love longer form video essays and reviews so I'm glad to see your work moving more in that direction. This is an interesting game that I did not know existed, and stuff like this is always fun to watch. In the future, more comprehensive summaries wouldn't be unwelcome either. :)
Love the obscure PS1/Saturn games.. would love to see some more Dreamcast titles
That little kid with the voice his voice sounds the same as the kids in Shenmue and I swear I've heard him in other games too
😅👍
For 1996 graphics were actually quite good
I know it’s probably a completely different voice actor, but little Hal’s voice reminds me of Chiaotzu from dragon ball/dbz. 10:32
I loved the parts with Anthony in the beginning. It looks like you made it seem like you were using Anthony as an avatar
You go through different time periods, I want to say, picking up inventions using them to solve puzzles and then making 'connections' of one item to another to escape the area.
good job. I too enjoy grimbeard, and your content is similar, but stands on it's own. Well done!
My new favourite youtube channel fr fr, also you've probably heard of or made a video on it by now but shadow of memories for the ps2, I think it was called shadow of fate in USA - very cool little murder mystery with time shenangians and some similarities to this game
The patrons just voted on that for the next video.
Great video. Have you ever played Juggernaut (ps1)? It's a weird adventure game that this vaguely reminded me of
Subbed. Love these old game reviews takes me back to my childhood. 😁👍🏻🇬🇧
Great editing and ya got jokes too! Subbed! :P
Hey, thanks so much!
I need to play this. This heavily reminds me of Shadow of Memories.
The kid's voice sound just like every kid's voice in Shenmue
24:27 that's just sooo funny, milk through nose funny imo :D
what a gem of a channel - love your voice, keep up the great work!
I think it'd be up your alley.
skipped the spoilers, 'cause now my partner and i are gonna play it! we'll be back to share our thoughts, once we're done, hehe
I suspect the weird dialogue is just bad bad localization. The localization team probably didn't have a writer who could take translations and rewrite it into natural dialogue. I'd bet things sounded more realistic in the original Japanese.
Really liking your channel. I think my fav weird obscure game from the era is Sentient, on the PS1
You think I wouldn't notice that computer screen. Nice World of Horror desktop. Great game.
"I didn't throw it, friend" lmao! love the dub, your videos are all great, love the atmosphere, kinda feels like home, for retro horror fans like me.
This game is so underrated. The atmosphere is sublime.
I remember playing Toriko on the Saturn.
Man i'm loving your chanel! Have you heard of Harvester? i love playing that broken game
Thanks for the love. And yeah, Harvester is a classic! It’s on my list to cover at some point.
Mist and wind don't go well together, that's maybe why there's no wind
I used to have this game when I bought Sega Saturn back then, I really enjoyed this game coz of its atmosphere and story, video graphics where very good compare to other games at the time. Have kind on nostalgia for this game ❤️
Bonus points for your PC 98 shot having been an image for 46 Okunen Monogatari- better known as the original, way more complicated EVO game, before it was completely redone for the SNES!
I believe it was released in the United Kingdom on March 27th, 1997.
also, Torico/ Lunacy oddly reminds me of Shadow Of Destiny (/Memories), sth about the time & space(?) travelling and the super oblivious protagonist
after watching a lot of your content im really getting this sense that the developers of these games in this era really knew the 3D character models looked creepy and just leaned into the whole thing by making them weirder yet (in terms of dialogue, mannerisms, etc.)
Antony is like John Locke in Lost.
Speaking about Lost - the Mist also checks out :D
"Yes I am Fred the traveler"
10:34 it seems little Hal doesn't leave misty town much
I know you were inspired by Grim Beard, and perhaps it's because I found you first, but your content is definitely better, in my opinion.
😑👍
Thank you for including the montage of all the characters being killed. That's exactly what I was looking for. Lol.
2:20 - is it really, because old times televisions had a natural blur so just reproducing them in monitors nowadays makes it look actually a lot worse than they should.
it was like natural anti-aliasing
