Sorry there was no video yesterday. I've been totally obsessed with this game, so wanted to do a full playthrough (but it's incredibly hard so it took a while!)
The video shows three of the four playable characters - the fourth character is a gun based character who plays similarly to the other gunner so I didn't bother including her.
The Secret Infernal Gate area is incredibly tough, especially as your character can only take 3 hits before they die!
You really are that into this game? That's noteworthy. It looks like something from '87 or '88. I hadn't even begun programming then.
Yeah, this one totally got me hooked. The combat is very satisfying, I love the pixel art and the soundtrack, and it's probably the most challenging thing I've played since Cuphead and Our Elusive Suffering. I really dig it. :)
Clearly the Sorceress is the superior choice out of all of them. Not only is she one with the superior hue that is purple, but she is also cracked at Doom.
Haha, yeah she's a bit of a badass! I especially love the pose she does when she unleashes that thundercloud special.
@@AlphaBetaGamer Rock On, Sorceress!
The character options are killing me. "Would you like to play a buff lizard girl, a pinup cowgirl, a sorceress, or a dude with two first names and one shotgun, whose specials are 'bigger shotgun' and 'become Violently American'?"
Judging by the lightning symbols the Sorceress' special power is charging smartphones
[Smiles in Murica]
@@AntipaladinPedigri 🤣
BwAaahahaha the morning laugh I needed
Dave having what looks like an AR-15 is also just so stereotypically American.
Thanks for playing my game, glad you liked it.
You're welcome! It's a fantastic game. Love that retro visual style and the combat felt great! Awesome work! :)
i know very little about animation/ programming and i suck at hard games but everything looked so smooth and fun to play. Can see the love put into so many of the animations. Just about everything looked so badass. Love it
I'm massively jealous that you're capable of making something this insanely wonderful.
Man, this is giving me huge vibes from old Apogee games. Thinking a lot of Monster Bash and Bio Menace. I love this.
It really reminds me of Dangerous Dave, also a game from Apogee.
@@BlackCrossCrusader Dangerous Dave is actually not an Apogee game. But I played it, it's a cool game as well.
@@lucasmoreira2418 I stand corrected. John Romero created it himself, but worked with Apogee at the same time and I got that mixed up because the styles are similar.
@@BlackCrossCrusader understandable, for a long time I also thought it was made by Apogee!
Its got dat EGA feel~
Yeah, the shotgun dude is CLEARLY Dangerous Dave.
Oh ya! It's Dave alright! I think that's his truck too!
It's nice to see Dangerous Dave and his three daughters (?) keeping the family business going.
This brings back my child memories.
So many mechanics that make this game really cool.
Recoil mechanics, reloading mechanics, out of ammo mechanics, damage mechanics to the enemies, and being able to smash your enemies with your shotgun I love it. Game play was also good. No crazy plot, pure and simple, shoot your way to survive and rid of evil. Music and graphics are awesome too. Awesome game
In case some one dosn't know: this is clearly an homage to Dangerous Dave, which is a very early game by John Romero later of ID Software and Ion Storm. I am mentioning this because if I don't, some one else will.
Anyway about the actual game, the only thing I don't like is the music, which is VERY grating. I really hope they change it at some point, because this looks pretty good otherwise.
I'm honestly lost on how the music could be annoying anyone, nothing about it sounds explicitly unpleasant.
It was intended to be grating and unpleasant. It sells the atmosphere.
If you mean music in the video, in the game it sounds a bit differently because of compression.
I think also it's an ode to "Zombies ate my neighbours" in that case the music is fire
That's why it's free, they can't sold this without changing the sprites(from Dangerous Dave, Monster Bash etc...)and I think one of the track is from Monster Bash as well.
Ah nice, spiritual successor to Dangerous Dave.
So we have Ian McCollum, an Argonian berserker person, and a sorceress who's really just a gamer girl.
Quite the eclectic cast.
Edit: Oh, and can't forget about the pinup cowgirl, I guess.
probably a lusty argonian maid in disguise
This looks really cool and I love how differently the characters all play.
0:33 and here I would have thought you would have picked the character with the big marshmallows.
1:16:08 your puns are unstoppable! I like big puns, I cannot lie!
The big marshmallows attract zombies. Dave has all guns, but no brains. Zombies walk up all unmotivated towards him like "welp, here goes another vegety smoothie I have to gulp down to keep my cardio in check".
Easily the most promising game you've featured this year thus far. Castlevania with Contra, Altered Beast and Doom elements is something I didn't know I wanted. The dev should really consider making an actual paid game!
Old school game like this was my preference because how the developer really put their heart into it
I thought it was dangerous dave.
The graphic style heavily reminds me of Monster Bash on DOS
The music reminds me of Korn and Adema...heavily. This fits perfectly with the theme of the game. If only 16 year old me had games like this with this exact score.
the best tribute to dangerous dave!!! Yeah. I'm that old
Looks super punchy and satisfying to play, and I'm really digging the damage/gore system in this! I wonder if they actually re-animated the enemy sprites with wounds applied to them.
Looks like the shareware pc games from the early 90’s. Im for it!
This looks like Dangerous Dave 2! One of my favorite PC games growing up! Amazing!
The new ID Software game looks so good!
"This is my BOOMSTICK!" - Ash
So Haunted Lands: Burial Grounds is basically Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion crossed with Monster Bash, Splatterhouse, Castelvania 1+2+3 and Symphony of the Night, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Ghosts n Goblins, Friday the 13th NES, They Bleed Pixels, Ninja Gaiden, and BioMenace? Good golly, man! That's an impressive combination of influences. The player character is pretty much an enhanced version of Dangerous Dave, right down to the shotgun and reload animations. The Beast Mode may even be influenced by Monolith's Blood, since Caleb was supposed to transform into the Beast in Blood's early development. I don't think id Software back when first they developed Haunted Mansion for SoftDisk in 1991 could've imagined their quick little horror game inspiring such an experimental game as this. When I searched for Shadow Knights, another Id/Softdisk game, I could see its influence on Burial Grounds as well. It's a good thing the Dave-like character doesn't die in one hit like the original Dave did in Haunted Mansion. I ought to check out Burial Grounds myself. Makes me want to see more indie games influenced by Softdisk/id Software/Apogee combined with the influences of other games.
the infernalist seems really tough to do with any class besides sorceress, and even then it looked pretty tough for her lol (I guess the more consistent rapid attacks from the other ones would at least move the barriers out the way a little easier?)
also I was a little surprised the final boss only had one health bar/form. I though for sure as it was taking damage was gonna spawn more trash mobs to keep you tilted or at least slow down your ability to focus fire on it.
very cool game, glad you brought more attention to it 👍
Just beat the game w/ all characters: to the final boss' credit, he's hard as heck! There are some character-specific tricks to make him easier (like mauling the side corpses as beast to heal / using pounce to stay air comboing during laser portion, sorceress using levitate to more easily avoid the lingering flames, or the gunners being able to build a level 3 by the final phase to blow them away) but in general he's tough enough w/o a second phase.
Honestly, I just love this game already. Each character has their major strengths/weaknesses and feels relatively balanced. Sorceress' thundercloud super might be one of the best, but keep in mind her healing source is also tied to that meter, so it checks out. What a game, hope it keeps getting support.
I was able to kill the infernalist with all characters easy. Took a little practice with the veteran/ranger though.
2:42 Ah yes, perfect time to play a quick round of pocket tennis
37:17 lol the monsters waited for you to close the door yourself like it was some "close the door behind you if you wanna have a good time, hun" BD SM session.
38:57 wait, so the way to not get injured by spikes on the ground is to roll over them? Big brain time.
Can you just swap characters whenever you like or is this multiple spliced together runs?
Hi! yeah, the first section is two playthroughs spliced together to show off the different characters (the beast and the gunner). But you can return to the base and change characters once you unlock the Boneyard shortcut, which I did in the second half of the video to show off the sorceress.
The music from the graveyard reminds me of Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
That color palette is making me age backwards.
256 colors took me back to my chidlhood when I first discovered the duke nukem's platform game
The visuals are fantastic!
HELLS YES! Dangerous Dave remakes!
Hmm. Reminds me of Commander Keen
I've been stuck on the overseer boss in the Forlorn Cathedral for longer than it took me to complete Elden Ring and you made it look so easy ;_;
The visual look of this game, the colors and style, reminds me SO much of Bio Menace...
The dyno character is the reference to.
THis looks liek the best dangerous dave tribute ever made
I didn’t know Dangerous Dave is back 💪
Best free game I've ever played
That Veteran - is Dangerous Dave
Love the sound desing on this one !!!
Hounted mansion from DOS got nice upgrade.
Beautiful game.
It's like Castlevania-meets-Axiom-Verge (especially that sound design; very Thomas Happ). I love it!
Thank for sharing and suffering through all the deaths. Playing with Salamander must be for masochists, because melee in this game must be brutal.
This is simply wonderful
Dude this is Dangerous Dave...
It looks like Dangerous Dave 2! Nice game!
Love the Dangerous Dave/Bio Menace style graphics.
Hell yes
I really like the retro sound effects. Reminds me of Galaga and Space Invaders
I love how it has inspirations from old 2D!side scroller games.
This looks really cool !!
Oh wow, that's sure is a nostalgic graphic
The stiff non-Newtonian character movement and EGA 16-color style palettes remind me of the Keen games by Apogee.
Golden age of shareware PC games homage, complete with EGA color palette.
Really cool game
Looks cool definitely checking this out
Bangin soundtrack right off the bat 👌.
Feels like Dangerous Dave the old school side scroller shooting game.
Idk wtf Dangerous Dave is but this gave me Altered Beast/Splatterhouse/Ghosts N Goblins vibes. Why did the protag suddenly turn into a rat/dragon/werewolf? Who knows but the music is kickass. Story? There was an attempt at the beginning I guess.
I LOLed at the rendition of Doom 2016 poster and Left 4 Dead 2 in DOS VGA... Amazing though reminds me a bit of Keen.
Dangerous Dave!!
This game has the exact same chiptune from Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
This is actually interesting.... cant wait to buy it at Steam
It's like Splatterhouse and Contra had a baby.
When The Walking Dead quickly turns into Castlevania. But hey, you get to play as an Argonian's Arsonist Amphibian Adjacent!
The intro🤣🤣👏👏👏
An old Apogee game called Biomenace comes to mind with this one.
Dangerous Dave 😝😉
that looks alot like dangerous dave from the dos era, nice.
The gameplay with the female character strangely reminds me of Warlock for the Sega Genesis.
Has such a bio menace look!
6:45 that's a very lousy bar. Not only are those guys ignoring the "no shoes, no shirt, to service" signs, but guys come in stark nakey.
8:53 it looks like my dude slipped and slid down the entire flight of stais on his bum
10:58 so that must be the afterlife equivalent to cheap, crowded public transport
Imagine being on your way to your braindead desk job and having to call it in: "boss, I will be late today, I missed a stop, and some idiot is shooting at me"
14:00 I think I know this pokemon: it's the boobahsaur
1:01:04 ah yes, slap a sus magic orb like a cat until a va gina portal opens up. That always seems to does the trick.
Cool, looks like an old ZX spectrum game
Reminds me of Monster Bash + the original Duke Nukem (when it was a side scroller with slug enemies and was kinda scary)
Monster Party vibes
28:17
Seeing a enemy with new color sheme, be like :
"Oh no, hes *blacks* !"
Looks like biomenance but with zombies
Waiting for Civvie to play this game
1:14:00 that head is surreal in being pixel but turing like its a 3d object
I suppose there isn't a mobile formatted version of this game available for download friend?
Dangerous Dave ?!?!? A sequel ??
Speaking of this kind of game, does anyone of you recall an arcade game which, there’s two hooded guys that throw fire from their lamp to cover enemies and turn them to fireballs and bowl to other enemies? I forgot the title and im looking for it so bad!
as gunner class i cant reload manually. in 1.0.1 ver [maybe cus i changed keymap in num4 and R key...] enyway thanks for show this game in your channel
Remind me to "Dave Dangerous".
That chapter title, "The Sorceress Goes to the Boneyard" 🍆🍆🍆
It is imperative for her sorcerussy
Like Bio-menace but dialed up to 12.
Jogo segue bem sua tematica
If after the Sorceress going for the Boneyard, the secret nether area is still super hard, it must've popped via gra like M&Ms. No wonder the Boneyard became a Haunted Tower. It will probably ghost her, and go off with some other Sorcerhussy. This in turn will haunt her and hurt her gravely for the rest of her life.
Oh nooooo. Not the boners. Whatever shall she do.
Excelente, xDD
This is Freddie and Haunted Mansion, lol
this is very Biomenace with casltevania vibes.
Rip ABGs marshmallow
Hola, el enlace para la descarga no funciona , gracias
NOT MARSHMALLOW THEFT! THE HORROR!
Dangerous dave style?
This game is fantastic but goddamn is it phuckin hard
Is it supposed to look like it’s running on an EGA card from the late 80s? In terms of the number of colors onscreen.
great for a 5 inch CRT
What platform is this
puts modern aaa-games to shame
