I grew up with a dad who was a custom home builder! A real custom home builder! Raised foundation , cut roof, hipped, all of the complicated builds he did them! He built in Carmel Golf Course before it was a big deal! I went into Law Enforcement ; Homicide /Robbery , undercover, Vice ? You name it! I retired at 50 (pretty much injuries and 30 yrs was enough). Dad and I did some jobs he retired at 78/79. I was bored in good shape and decided I could do carpenter work but not frame! So I got my “Mill Workers” license and stated trimming houses, building custom pieces, and some remodeling! I so enjoy it what a blessing! I am going strong at 63 booked out until July this summer and could book out more but I do not! Dad at 84/85 yrs old helped me hang a huge commercial door not long ago! I remember the electricians on the job their jaws were on the floor? They said that guy lifted that door ??? Do not ever count yourself out! Stay active and honor the God who made you!

I'm 15 and just finished my first summer of building custom homes, and i was surprised that i was the one setting trusses with my foreman 3.5 months into it. through the summer i realized that paying attention and doing your best will really bring you a long ways.
Not a framer but a mechanic at a shipyard and I’m gonna tell you everything y’all were saying is what I look for in a apprentice. Show up on time, have your tools, and show interest try and learn something new everyday. Hell I’ve been doing it for 10 years now and I still try and learn something new every day. There’s always something new to learn or improve on
Also another thing, I miss being a laborer sometimes, back when all I had to worry about was having nails and picking trash up and cleaning up. The good ol days😂😂😂😂
Trying to get into a union apprenticeship for carpentry my biggest fear currently is the math test good video tho man you both seem like good peoples 👍🏾❤️
I'm currently in high school and wondering what to do for my future! Your channel is making me consider carpentry as a career option. How would you know if you'd enjoy that type of thing?
Don't wait till you are 30 years old like me is what I will tell you. I know it's cliche but listen to your elders. Start early and start now. Pick a trade since you are young even if you don't like it. I recommend carpentry so you can go into any of the major trades easily
im looking to potentially become an apprentice, but i also love to train martial arts/workout, how tiring is some of this stuff? especially the tasks that "suck"
Haha I actually used to go to the gym a lot before I started this job. Now it’s a rare occasion. At least for me, the work became the gym. Your body gets used to it.
How would you recommend finding a good framer to work for. I'm a finish carpenter with about 6 years of experience. I work for a really good builder, but I'm thinking about moving from the area I grew up. I tried searching for jobs online and didn't see much. Would you call builders in the area and ask, walk on jobs and ask?
Going to make a part 2 to this video very soon. Talking about how to get in to the trade and my experience with it. But for now yes that’s the one thing I would do. Go drive around new construction developments and find the framing crews who are working. Just go up and ask if they need a laborer or a second hand. Chances are they’ll always say yes👍
Don't be on time, be early. Don't think that you can walk around with a coffee cup in your hand even if the boss man does. Wear hearing and eye protection. You should use knee pads if you're working on your knees a lot. Take this advice from a 66-year-old carpenter wo can't hear, has caught one nail and a bunch of other shit in his eye and needs to have an MRI and maybe surgery on his left knee. The other knee is messed up too. If I had followed these safety rules when I started 47 years ago, I may not be in such bad shape. The way you guys are talking does impress me. I know of so many guys your age who don't think they need to get a job or at least one where they need to work.

Showing up on time is important! Says everything you need to know about the worker.

@@certifiedladderholder so even after years of doing it, still fairly tiring?
@@Josiah04 Yes in a way. I personally still wouldn’t want it any other way.

Treat this guy with some respect if you were on any other crew you’d be going home in a ambulance daily with your attitude
Yo what happened to you?
I know why he did this for you, he saw the whip you took out of your tool belt recently, you scared him!! LOL
