Who’s ready for a glorious M5 v GT-R drag race?!
We’ve got Mat lined up in an E39 M5, and he’s about to go head-to-head against an R34 GT-R Skyline! But how do they compare?
Starting with the M5, it’s powered by a 4.9-litre naturally-aspirated V8 that can deliver 400hp and 500Nm. It weighs in at 1,795kg and it drives the rear wheels only. If you’re looking to pick one up today, it’ll set you back around £25,000.
As for the GT-R, well that’ll cost you MUCH more, with one of those costing around £120,000! However, it may be more expensive, but it’s down on power, with its 2.6-litre twin-turbo straight-six able to deliver 280hp and 392Nm. It is lighter than the BMW, though, tipping the scales at 1,560kg.

The E39 M5 seems to launch very well. The rolling races just demonstrate the obvious advantage that larger capacity NA motors have in the lower rev range. This was a good match up though.
Also RWD has a large advantage in roll races over AWD

I won’t call the RB26 really good sounding. It has to pass through a plethora of BMW’s on straight-sixes as far as being sonorous.
@@alstoundnah bmw makes great performing engines without a doubt but as far as sound they’re way too raspy sounding for the most part and even their turbo engine pale in comparison in terms of sound in comparison to the RB and 1jz which definitely sound way better but then again sound is all a matter of opinion/preference.
The V8 is in the Ascari KZ1. Better than Honda NSX...

I don't think the e39 has been under-appreciated at all. I mean look at the prices of them and always been touted as one of the best looking bmws ever made, had that very popular short film from guy ritchy made for it, ect.

@@amero3577 i think a M3 is more sporty than a GT-R.. They got almost 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, throttle bodies for every cylinder, … on Nürburgring trackdays driving like 70% bmw‘s for a reason.

I would say it isn't a fair comparison overall: the M5 has the performance, but it also has the looks, the comfort, the practicality, and somehow, better value (???). I suspect on a track the GT-R has the advantage, but the M5 can still compete while being so much nicer on the drive home.

Such a nice example of each car. Almost feels bad to use these relics in this day and age where parts are becoming so scarce. I love the S62 motor but that R34 is just such a rarity in this day and age and the color is so unique even if its overhyped.

They are so evenly matched depending on the drivers launch and or the in gear speed set off. They both eclipsed each other, however I’m sure the R32 is easily mapped for lots more power if it wanted that edge but both cars for that standard vs standard car is so surprisingly equal. Really great shoot this was 😁

I'm a bit more of a BMW fangirl (owned 4 of them) I was surprised to see the GT-R looked so much fresher as a design, at least in my eyes (I know it's a slightly younger car). Great drag race as ever and a reminder how cars used to sound .... ah for those halcyon days.

More likely the M5 driver deciding to lift off in a supposed drag race makes the GtR look like it has a higher top end than it does.
Look at the numbers, they don’t lie. The. Listen to the race and you will hear the BMWs RPM note stop rising as well as notice the difference in aggressive shifting between the runs.
@@rbslammed6163 fr, that GTR would maybe have that m5 in a 1/8 mile, but anything further that e39 would pull way harder than the GTR could handle

bro bmw has 120 hp more than Gtr. It's a loose for bmw. It's 40% more power relating to gtr and when gtr is on boost they are going the same.
@@leov3_ On paper yes. In reality a R34 GTR has stock around 320-330hp (Turbo), E39 M5s have around 380 hp (NA Engine). So 230kg weight-difference and there you got the explanation for close race. Driven both cars (stock).
I have never driven this Nissan, but I have owned several. I chose them for their driving dynamics. I now drive an e39 M5 for the past 7 years. Fabulous car, reliable, fast enough and very sophisticated. Added a new stereo system with CarPlay and feels as modern as my M550i. And doesn't depreciate.
Looks like the R34 I used to do endurance runs on GT2 on PS1. I fell in love with that car. Man I miss those days. PS1 lol. Same exact color too.

I prefer the M5 but even I could see that the 50mph rolling start (assuming BOTH cars had to be) in third gear was unfair to the Skyline. These are both iconic cars and I would love to be able to have both of them!
yeah, 3rd gear rolls in nissans usually always result in a loss. its just out of the usable power band. Nissans thrive in digs/2nd gear rolls.
It still lost even from 60 tho. And the roll from 2nd gear too.
Just shows how well engineered the GT-R really is. Even with AWD, it's down 100+hp, but that almost 400nm of torque is absolutely ridiculous. The E39 has got to be my favourite BMW and the M5 is just....gawwddddd. When the GT-R gets on the boost it's so close. Thanks for a very entertaining vid Matt!
Its not down 100 hp. Its down like 80 or 70hp.
The M5 never makes his 400HP. Most of them make like 350-380hp.
Considering the GTR never makes 280, but for sure 300+hp tve gap is more like 40-70hp. Consider then, that the BMW has 200kg more
I actually really enjoy the brake tests. It’s something nobody else does and is always interesting.
For rolling races there's a cheat technique for turbo cars called brake boosting.
You apply the brakes under full throttle carefully to allow the turbos to get up to speed.
It's risky in a high powered car but for an all wheel drive platform it's as good as it can get.

A 4 door family sedan, manual gear box, 265 kg heavier and rwd m5 did its best. That nissan is a proper sports car
@@joeljohnjacob6246 R34 coupe and ER34 sedan have the same wheelbase🤷♂️ And BMW has 2 more pistons and 2.3 (!!!) liters more volume. Not surprisingly, after about 60 mph, he will start overtaking
