Time warp and no change are some of the qualities about Tasmania that people love and don't want changed. We don't want to be like every other big cities and towns. Slow and retro. These things are rare and treasured by those who love Tassie. There are plenty of other places that can deliver what you might want. We moved from a big city 30 years ago and we love how it is. Yes cars are essential. I've found that it takes 6 months to a year to start to get a close group of friends. Enjoy
Yeah, I live in a more rural part of northern tassie and anything ordered from inside the state would be about 3 days max from when it is actually sent, even with reguler post. Anything from the mainland is about a week reguler post. Amazon stuff is about a week and a half because Amazon is slow to ship. The only thing I can think of is she ordered something from international, which can take a while. The furnature thing is annoying, places either don't ship here or charge an arm and a leg (particulery the last couple of years)
In Melbourne I can get next day delivery if the item is at the Melbourne warehouse or 2 day delivery from Sydney warehouse. Items from America do take a couple of weeks, but if you want to look for a silver lining, I think the slow shipping from the US stops us impulse buying haha.
I lived in Tassie for years and absolutely l loved everything about it-you should go back to America or the mainland where the important things to you like shopping and mailorder and cars and jobs are easier-you dont realise what you have there !
Hi Ash, I'm currently at UTAS. RE jobs. Yes, it is limited. I was made redundant last year after the place where I worked for 13 years closed. Not many jobs are available when you are in your mid 50's! RE Cars. Absolutely, you need to have a car, I live halfway between Hobart and Launceston. There is zero public transport. We relocated here 21 years ago from Sydney, and the drawbacks, which are minimal, are far weighed by the benefits. We absolutely love it here.
My experience with getting stuff sent from Amazon US or UK to Hobart is that it takes about 2-3 weeks. A slightly longer wait compared to when I was in Sydney, but only by a few days. I find IKEA orders to Hobart are pretty slow but at least they deliver to Hobart. BTW, you might not find any seals at Cradle Mountain, but the views are nice😊
I think people overall don't like too much change and I'm so pleased that you gave found your niche people. Good luck with your job interview cheers and Merry Christmas ❤
Tasmania, in general, doesn't have much of a transitory population. In some ways it's very much like the rural areas of the US and UK where people are born, die and spend much of their life in the same town. That makes it a lot harder to make friends because you're always the new person. Brisbane is a bit more fluid but somewhere like Airlie Beach (my other home) has so many new people that it's really easy to make friends. Plus it's really chill. In terms of delivery, Amazon in Brisbane is next day or at most 3 days; AliExpress, Banggood and Temu are all about the 2 to 3 week mark. For Airlie you need to add another 10 days on to each of those delivery timelines. I love the Freycinet Coast - Bicheno, Apollo Bay in Victoria and Airlie are the only places I really feel at home. Also Strahan on the West Coast is definitely worthwhile going to. It feels like it's perched on the edge of civilization.
I live 50 ks out of Launceston and order online from Amazon and other places and most stuff arrives in a week max. 2 weeks from Launceston to hobart is a piss take. That's the next day, usually or 2 at the most. Your experience isn't typical. Yeah, if you order off Amazon UK or US it'll take longer. Yes you need a car for a 68,000 sq km island with half a million population. Tassie doesn't need to change much, especially seeing the 'changes' blighting the rest of the planet. Enjoy Melbourne.
I'm a POM who emigrated to Northland NZ almost 20 years ago. Thinking about retiring to Tassie. Had a great time there 20 odd years ago. All the things that bother her seem to be things I would not give a hoot about really.
Interesting points made, Ash. In Perth, many products are shipped from Sydney or Melbourne. As such, smaller items will take up to a week to arrive. More bulky items, expect at least 2-3 weeks. It teaches us patience!! However, my son recently purchased something from China and that took less than a week!?
Exactly. So the jobs are here but the openings aren't necessarily. Due to UTAS and IMAS a lot of people are attracted here so there's saturation in the field.
In Brisbane we have the amazon warehouse, so we get a lot of next day deliveries. However im not opposed to driving to pick something up instead of getting it delivered, especially if its only a few hours away. Make a road trip out of it and see the sights. Of course if you don't have a car then thats a different story.
I moved from Queensland to Tasmania, interstate move 10 years ago. It took me a long time to get adjusted, especially the climate. No problem though, I have the biggest boots collection ever! I love my jeans & boots in Tas. Compared to Queensland, I wear a lot more winter gear. It also took me 7 years to find friends, still only have 2 but that’s enough for me. With the car, I had one in Queensland and sold when I moved to Tas. Haven’t needed a car since. I find the bus good enough as only 2 min to where I live. Otherwise I just Uber around. It’s a much smaller state compared to Queensland and don’t feel I need a car, have survived long enough without. The people are more laid back and understanding here. In Queensland people are much more busy & stressed out. It’s true that jobs are limited here in Tas, it was a little difficult for me in beginning to try find work, my job agencies were understanding if I was sick to attend appointments, there was slight pressure though of needing to job search when I seemed to be running out of listing jobs that I applied for. I have nerve pain injury and recently was able to get on a disability. In Queensland it may have been much more difficult to prove I couldn’t work well with my nerve pain. There are good doctors and psychologists here that really helped me get what I needed. There are a lot of positives here. My only disadvantage is the climate as I’m more of a summer person but it’s ok, summer is a mix of warm, hot, & cold in Tas. Winter this year hasn’t been too bad, Infact nights are same temperature as Queensland’s winter, I think I’ve adapted quite well over the years. I travel to Qld once a year as I have 2 older children in their 20’s and a sister who lives there, so I still get some of the warmer days I like. For anyone considering to live in Tas, I say go for it, the lifestyle and scenery is quite nice. It’s common for some areas to have wallabies in the backyard of houses, I have 2 that visit mine 😊❤
There's too many bleeping of you: over 500,000 people on a tiny island. No thanks. Trim the fat, then we'll talk! Search says 79,000 more ppl expected by 2030, YIKES. You must have taller skyscrapers than NYC to contain all that! No thanks: I like peace & QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For me personally,re-Amazon. If it's from Aus it takes 1-3 days generally. And if from the US it takes 8-14days. And I get free delivery because I have primevideo. You can get same day delivery in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth metro areas and suburbs. Regional probably not. I think the long delivery 🚚 is a Tas thing due to remoteness separated by sea. I think all capital cities should have a free shuttle service around the city loops. Brisbane has a free bus and ferry. Melbourne has a free tram. I think Adelaide may have something. Not sure about other places. I've noticed you look more relaxed and at peace and happy lately. Your demeanor on here at least. Whatever has shifted or changed for you is working 🙂 from my observations from afar lol.
I've lived in Tasmania most of my life, other than a year or so living in the UK and a bunch of travel for work, and I agree with basically everything you said! Although, 2 weeks postage from Launnie to Hobart?? That sounds like the person forgot to post it and wasn't honest about it to me 😬 Also, if I can help with anything, I'm happy to!
I ordered car parts from Georgia (US) and they got here in Brisbane in 7 days. My brother ordered parts from The Netherlands on Monday afternoon and they were in Sydney by Friday morning. My wife ordered some stuff from Sydney, we tracked it to Perth, Brisbane, then Darwin and eventually back to Brisbane. It took a month. BTW, I haven't yet noticed you mentioning any scars Tasmanians have on their shoulders. Right for males and left shoulder for females. They're usually about same length as the width of their neck. It's an operation carried out soon after birth.
Postage definitely takes forever to get here! To the point where I think I've been ripped off every time I order anything online. It's a combination of coming from China or the U.S. plus having to then get to Tasmania. Job wise, we have a shortage, nationwide, of nurses, midwives, doctors and vets. There are always jobs in aged care or disability support. Getting a permanent job here is difficult. Many positions are casual, which makes it hard for anyone who wants to apply for a loan.
Groovy! Have a lovely Christmas & hope Cradle Mountain is worth the wait. I’ve been - but ages ago. I didn’t go the walks or anything -we arrived late in the day & got some afternoon tea - do stared @ the mountain while munching? I dunno - it looked a bit boring from where I was.

Amazon deliveries often come from overseas but even so 1m seems excessive. Amazon would be one of the better for deliveries. Ebay from China is far worse.

The good news is you order online, forget about it and then get a surprise package. That’s a win for blokes.
🤣
I do the same.
'Tasmania hates change' and 'you need a car' omg too true and everything like this affecting ease of living is basically linked in some way 🙃🙃🙃
Two weeks for coffee from Launceston to Hobart!! Thats not Aus post, that’s bad service from the supplier. 48hrs is what i would expect.

winter isn’t that cold it’s fine! only gets cold if you’re much higher in elevation. For rentals overall it’s hard to find one and to buy as well
Been here since 2008 and yes Jobs are hard to find!
How's the quality of the hospital system compared to say Sydney?
not great
as a nurse who nursed in Tasmania. I second that
I got quite a shock when I moved back to Hobart from Sydney and had to go to hospital for surgery.
