I have the same triangular 3 piece Westwind stand as Elizabeth Thompson (below). It came with the Trangia burner - no extra cost. Very easy to use and works perfectly. I've been using the same stove and stand for over 25 years, and it works as well now as it did when new.

Hey, Ernie! Thank you for the things that you do for UA-cam, and that you do for me. 'Cause at $77, I would never do this for me. It's nice to see these things, though. You have taught me a ton about what to look for and why to look for it.
I appreciate it... all of it.

Great video, this was my go-to backpacking setup for a year and a half until my Picogrill 85 arrived from Switzerland last week. Same weight and combo with the Trangia with the space of a full-sized Firebox, all for about the same price as a titanium Nano. This may not be the best pot stand for the Spirit due to the inability to apply the lid when lit, but it is the best overall backpacking combo for twig primary, alcohol backup or Trangia with the damper.

I have 2 nano’s and several others. But I agree with you on a multi fuel usage- that nano is first in the list. Folds flat and you can alter and add sides to the nano for quicker cook times. The best.

Thanks Ernie for this video. I believe the Trangia factory has the Triangle as out of stock which accounts for its current high price on Amazon. I didn't realize the Esbit triangle fit the trangia burner perfectly. Thanks for telling me!

Thanks for the heads up and review of this product. I've been using Trangia products for 40 years and they've always been pricy, but the build quality good and they function well. However, the Triangle's price is absurd!!
One thing to note about the nano (I have a ss version) - it has four legs. Four is inherently unstable - you've probably noticed the rolled up napkin under many a restaurant table because of this. I think I would retire my nano in favour of the Esbit. I'm going to get one and give it a try. Cheers!

I still love the Chinese alocs/redcamp/gohike/several other brands generic aluminum potstand for the trangia. Super light, super inexpensive, and has multiple positions for the stove based on pot size and desired distance from the burner to the pot.
If you're someone like me who isn't going to use a wood stove to heat pots, then it's a great choice.

To concur with others, I agree that both the Firebox Nano and the 5" Firebox stoves are the best pot stands for the Trangia Spirit and Gas burners (as well as other the other available fuels). Personally, I love the versatility of the Firebox stoves. Steve and his people did a great job with designing them.
    Good video Ernie. Interesting info.

Hi Ernie. Great video as always, thanks for sharing. This right here, is why china is becoming a financial GIANT! 77 bucks for the triangle? RIDICULOUS! I'll bet there's not five bucks worth of steel in it. I checked on that esbit ultralight that you mentioned, same thing. There was one on Amazon I think, for 68 bucks, (68 BUCKS!!) And some one on e bay wasting his listing fee, trying to get 216.00 dollars! No wonder china is taking over the market! There the only ones who know what something is worth!! Come on America!! GET IT TOGETHER!!

The retail price in Europe is 30€, I bought mine in the UK cheaper as it was discounted to around £23.
If you look in the Trangia website they specifically do not sell the Trangia Triangle in the US and they will not ship to the US. I’m not sure but it seems like a legal issue. Perhaps because the Click-stand had a patent on the design or something. I’m pretty sure they made it first. I think this is the reason why the price is so high in the US.

take the solid fuel plate and place it in the bottom for the triangia to sit on for winter time. Helps heating the alcohol by reducing the cold air flowing from the bottom.
It can still get plenty of air from the sides for combustion.

Love mine, it doesn't look a lot for your money ( in the UK we get it much cheaper at under £30) but it's simplicity is its brilliance. I use mine with Trangia's own bio-ethanol fuel tray rather than the traditional spirit burner. This makes it more compact for bikepacking and means I can use solid ethanol blocks which easier to pack rather than a fuel bottle. I also have a Bushbox Pocket which I've used with a spirit burner as well as using it as a twig burner. Now I think about it I have far too many cookers 😂

The triangle is definitely the best choice for the Trangia IMO, especially using the GSI kettle. I like the nano, but you need the ti one to make it viable and that's expensive. The Trangia Triangle should be available for around 20 to 30 bucks now that production is back up with the new 2022 version. That's the reason they were expensive, they weren't in production. They are now, with a slightly modified centre ring and the stainless steel triangle side plates now have smoother edging, so no sharp corners. Price in UK is currently between £20 and £24.00
It's also brilliant with the Toaks siphon burner. Just use the Toaks 700ml 115m diameter titanium pot on the triangle with no centre ring, the siphon burner sits in the middle on the ground and you have a great kit that weighs only 176g (6.2 oz). Snuff the burner out with the bottom of the pot and you can pour your unused fuel back in your fuel bottle . . . it's great for a day hike brew kit.

Doc, I have sat here on Christmas morning looking at three of your videos discussing the "perfect Trangia stand". You keep coming back to the Nano, which I am sure is a fantastic product, but in every test it was outperformed by at least one product; in two of the videos that one product was produced by Trangia. A Trangia stove stand does not need to be multifunctional, and I believe your quest should compare apples to apples, so to speak. This is not to say that for you, the Nano fills every approach. I do not burn solid fuel, or wood; only Trangias. So the Trangia Triangle looks like it is the best small stand; plus you can still use the simmer ring. I appreciate your dedication and videos; so please do not construe this post to be a criticism.....just a grouchy old man who did not get any Trangia stand for Christmas !!! ;-)

I would be interested to know who first designed the "Triangle" there are so many versions of this out there.
Nano has the ultimate flexibility but if gas and alcohol are your main heat sources I don't think the Clickstand with its unique windshield can be beaten, in real world use using the Evernew titanium burner with the wire adapter and the clickstand gives very good boil times.

Interesting, here in The Netherlands the Trangia Triangle is € 26 (including 21% tax) and the Esbit is a couple of € cheaper. The Firebox Titanium Nano on the other hand is € 82. I have a Trangia Triangle, the problem with it is that boiling water in a 300 or 400 ml pot doesn't work because the pot is to narrow. I have to use some tent pegs to support the pot.

About the pricing - Here in Denmark, where i live it's the exact opposit. The Trangia Triangle comes in at (converted to US dollars ) 29,88 and the Firebox Nano ti at 82,09. And i think that will be the same all over Europe. It has proberbly something to do with import/export taxes to and from the US and Europe. So would i buy the Firebox here in Denmark? No, it's way too expensive. I'll stick to my Bushcraft Essentials Ultralight that comes in at 70 grams, looks like the Trangia Triangle but is more versatile, as it also can be used as a wood burner and it cost 40 $ 😊 Maybe you should look at that brand. But all in all a good comparison video. Thank you for that 👍

Except the stove itself, everything sold by Trangia is ridiculously priced and also the products meant to replace Trangia ecosystem are too. I used a Savotta Happy Stove and nest my Trangia stove inside it, works like a charm. Problem with the design of most Trangia pot stands is they don't allow us to put small cup size pots and Stanleys because of the width of diameter. Happy Stove is the one and only cure for this and also a backup as a wood stove in case I run out of alcohol.

I just checked the Esbit stand you mention and it's $67 on Amazon right now (Jan 19, 2021). I'd like to know where you got one for $25.

It's difficult to argue against the Firebox Nano with that flat pack and multi fuel capability.

Problem with the Firebox Nano vs the Triangle is stability. I have the firebox and it's really small footprint for stability

$77 that’s madness, I picked one up in UK for £17 that’s $22 how can Amazon justify that, I’m gobsmacked, great vid though, great channel 👍

Is the pot stand made of gold with a titanium alloy?!

  • @oxxnarrdflame8865
    @oxxnarrdflame8865 3 роки тому +1

The esbit is smaller so it will handle smaller pots. I see no advantage to the trangia except that you can use the other burner but really who cares.
I agree with you on the nano.

I love and appreciate your "little stove problem", but don't get the Trangia infatuation. The Sterno Inferno you reviewed is 6 oz with the stand AND pot (no lid) while being less expensive than all of these. The Trail Design Kojin is smaller and lighter than the Trangia while costing about the same. Why do you want to add the weight and expense of titanium? Thanks and keep up the good work. (And who would have thought watching someone boil water would be so much fun??! LOL)

The Esbit version is $69 now...
Wow! I have one that was given to me, and really like it... But I would never spend $69 on something like that. I can make it myself for free from a piece of steel flashing.
Decided to go ahead and get the Firebox Nano... it just looks too cool to pass up... and it seems more substantial for the price.
    👍🏻👍🏻

I asked a local craftsman and he made me that pot stand and a proper alcohol stove for less than 30. (Though i supplied the design, template and measurements).
I also ordered two sheet of titanium and had him copy the swiss pico grill (which i has replaced everything - it's both a windshield and a wood stove)

Forgot to say he made me custom tarp pegs which i use for the stove configuration as well, saving a lot of weight

Yeah! I’ve often said you need to be a doctor to afforded the Trangia triangle! Lol. For the life of me I don’t understand why they sell it for so much. I wondered if they had an arrangement with the clikstand people. It seems like cheap triangles on the American market would undercut them significantly. Too bad there isn’t a stainless mojo...
    It’s a funny old hobby. ;)

Thereal111t Lixada has a titanium one for $8, is round but works the same, add a couple of metal sticks to the top for small pots, specially at that price and works perfectly with Trangia, however like it was said here, The versatility matching Trangia and Firebox which ever size you have is incomparable. I’ll stick with them.

@@carmenmartinez2882 how does the simmer ring function with each of the different alternatives?

    • @carmenmartinez2882
      @carmenmartinez2882 3 роки тому +1

@@Thereal111t It doesn’t fit snug around it, so you can use the simmering ring. It is a tad bigger than the circumference of a Stanley cooking system hence no problem with the simmering top, but you can use the Stanley by putting 2 small metal pieces on the ridges on top or one of those really small square grills that Amazon sells. Works great and I’ve used it in windy conditions.

$70 for 3 pieces of metal? I get the same boil times with those cheap $4 cross stands that sit on top and a foil wind break, all fits in my coffee mug too, some things don't need to be over over engineered and made from gold 😂

Crazy. Try a flat sheet of aluminium foil or a Chinese takeaway container that can be folded flat and unfolded as a windbreak as needed. Lighter, smaller and $0 cost
