The entire cast was excellent, too; all of them. Brad Douriff, Diana Scarwid, Ned Beatty as the congressman, Angela Cartwright, and of course, James Earl Jones, all of them. My grandmother told me about Jim Jones as a kid. When she raised us, she didn’t like us going to church except for when I go with my grandparents. She never took us to church because one of our family members used to be a part of peoples temple and that was my great great grandma. It was communion day and we had not one but two pastors because we lost our church. So the pastor who was pastoring told us to take our communion to our seats. My pastor at the time says no no no. We got to the Delaware bridge just at twilight. The sun was setting and there were red and grey, dark and light gray, streaks of clouds low in the sky. Then, near the bridge, a bizarre and unexpected sight. Things that reminded me of jacks, you know, from the old game, balls and jacks, huge jacks flying up in the sky, getting lower and lower, bigger and bigger These were the first military cargo planes coming in from Jonestown. They were landing at Dover AFB. We instantly knew what they were and said, “Oh no, how depressing,” for we were depressed anyway, there was a recession and jobs were hard to find and all the news was bad news in those days. Jim Jones’ body was on one of those planes. The specter of Jonestown is with us today, every day. Jonestown foreshadowed our times more than 40 years later. Who or what else today is saying, “Come to the pavilion my children.” Who or what else is telling people to go along with dark advice that is, to say the least, not in their best interest? Who is drinking the Kool Aid now? Who is going to die, bodily or in spirit, for going along with cult deeds and thoughts? I think we all know the answer. When I was a kid we went to Jones' church in Indiana. I remember him as a dark figure. Something happened one visit, my mom grabbed me and we ran out of his house and drove away, never returning. I don't know what happened.

Am 30 years old and it's my first time hearing about this! Thanks alot. In Uganda where am from, someone called Kibwetere who was a cult leader of some christian-like group in South Western Uganda convinced his followers to sell all their property and prepare for the end of the world and ascension to heaven at the beginning of the new millenium/21st century. He later called everyone into the church, locked themselves in and they set the building ablaze burning themselves to death. Whether he was in the building or out when it burned down is not really known. But prior to this climax of the church fire, many followers were already being killed and dumped into a ditch at one of the locations of the church's former premises. It is said that the massacre could have been influenced by the fact that the world did not end at the 1999/2000 new year transition as had been expected, but it is also said that Kibwetere may have feared that with the end of the world and ascension to heaven not materialising, he could have feared that he would have to be answerable and compensate the followers who had sold off, destroyed or given away their property and assets. This second reason could perhaps have given Kibwetere motive to kill his followers but himself flee. However, if it was the first reason, and if all these people really believed that the world was to end, then there's a chance that Kibwetere might have also died with them in the furnace while adhering to his and their beliefs of the actual impending ennd of the world. I remember in high school, I came across this movie on a late Saturday night either on TNT or TBS. I watched it, and it made me feel so uneasy. How one man had that much power over almost a thousand people and also cost most of them their lives. Watching it, I felt like when Jones started preaching, he had the best of intentions. But greed and egotism consumed him. And then he loved the power he had over his followers. He went from serving God to then believing he was God. Then he thought himself to be bigger than God. It shows what can happen when Satan can gain control over somebody like Jim Jones and use that person for pure evil. A part of me wishes I never saw this movie. However, it did a great job with the chronicles of his early life, his rise to power and fame, and his eventual downfall. And the actors did a great job in the movie. Especially the late Powers Boothe. He made you believe that HE WAS Jim Jones.

No he didn't, he was a wrong un' right from the get go. In his childhood other children were forbidden from having anything whatsoever to do with him due to his parents refusal to do anything about his persistently deranged, perverted and downright dangerous behaviour. He used to kill pets so he could conduct funeral services for them, a very sick person right from the beginning who was only attracted to religion because it allowed him to assume a position of control over the most vulnerable. I was 17 years old in 1978 when this horrific tragedy occurred in Jonestown. The pictures I saw of what happened down there were so unbelievable and very shocking, just seeing all of those dead bodies lying on top of each other was so trumatic for me and I was in total shock and disbelief by what I saw. I saw this when I was approximately 5 or 6 years old and this show traumatized me. I couldn’t tell if it was real or a movie but then I recognize Randy Quaid and it says “based on the true story”. It’s shot like a documentary that’s why it fooled me! But this is how I was taught about never “drink the kool aid”
The sad thing is, Jones started out with very good intentions. He believed in what he was doing and really wanted to help everyone. He was doing all the right things, but he was trying to move too fast. The extreme racial tensions at the time worked against him. He had to come up with something to overcome that, and that's when he went sideways. Evidently, "Father Devine" encouraged Jones to use whatever was necessary to bring wealth to his church, whether that was women or convincing members of his flock to give up to him everything they had. We know the rest.

If people studied the gospel and the epistles nobody would have followed him. First he was ok but then threw away the Bible he cherished so much as a child and teenager. My husband is from Guyana. My MIL says she remembers this very well, the land has now been taken back over by nature.

My grandmother told me about Jim Jones as a kid. When she raised us, she didn’t like us going to church except for when I go with my grandparents. She never took us to church because one of our family members used to be a part of peoples temple and that was my great great grandma. I’m so glad one of our relatives told her please don’t go to Guyana. I remember a similar situation as an adult at church. It was communion day and we had not one but two pastors because we lost our church. So the pastor who was pastoring told us to take our communion to our seats. My pastor at the time says no no no. In Uganda where am from, someone called Kibwetere who was a cult leader of some christian-like group in South Western Uganda convinced his followers to sell all their property and prepare for the end of the world and ascension to heaven at the beginning of the new millenium/21st century. He later called everyone into the church, locked themselves in and they set the building ablaze burning themselves to death. Whether he was in the building or out when it burned down is not really known. But prior to this climax of the church fire, many followers were already being killed and dumped into a ditch at one of the locations of the church's former premises. It is said that the massacre could have been influenced by the fact that the world did not end at the 1999/2000 new year transition as had been expected, but it is also said that Kibwetere may have feared that with the end of the world and ascension to heaven not materialising, he could have feared that he would have to be answerable and compensate the followers who had sold off, destroyed or given away their property and assets. This second reason could perhaps have given Kibwetere motive to kill his followers but himself flee. However, if it was the first reason, and if all these people really believed that the world was to end, then there's a chance that Kibwetere might have also died with them in the furnace while adhering to his and their beliefs of the actual impending ennd of the world. I am a Guyanese and the Guyana President got millions of USD from Jim Jones. I was a very young boy. But I remember the news paper of all the Americans killed in Jones Town. Very far in the Rainforest of Guyana.
Many of his congregationists would also frequently kneel in supplication before Reverend Jones then supp avidly upon his divine rod until it would suddenly rear up and anoint their visage with his sackrament of divine grace and grant them everlasting peace.
Part of my family perished over there. I will never forget the day we found out. My beloved mother's favorite brother perished, my mother was never the same. She felt guilty, because her brother asked her, if he should marry the woman who sent them to their graves. But my mother was just a kid when he asked her that. My favorite Aunt she said she was going to sell her house and go over there. Her oldest daughter put her foot down, told her she was Not going to sell anything, and was Not going anywhere. Thank God she listened. She felt guilty the remaining of her life as well. She would get sick every year around the time they perished. I'm sure there was some survival guilt as well.
My family that perished over there was going around trying o get the rest of us to join in the maddness. Excuse me, I should say my uncle's wife was trying to do this. Calling that devil father, listen to his lies, sell our homes and give him the money. Stand on corners beg for money to give to this devil. And to go with them whe he told them California was going to fall in the ocean. The government was coming for them and they must flee to South America. Btw South America is surrounded by water. My grown cousin took his girlfriend and her four children. My cousin who was 18, got off the bus before it left, with another girl. They told them they had to go to the bathroom and kept walking. That is the only reason why they are alive today. Even though my grown cousin, (her brother) over there wrote letters to her, telling her to come, that their mother was sick. I was only a year old when the Guyana Tragedy occurred. I heard that it was really big news when it happened. I remember in high school, I came across this movie on a late Saturday night either on TNT or TBS. I watched it, and it made me feel so uneasy. How one man had that much power over almost a thousand people and also cost most of them their lives.
Watching it, I felt like when Jones started preaching, he had the best of intentions. But greed and egotism consumed him. And then he loved the power he had over his followers. He went from serving God to then believing he was God. Then he thought himself to be bigger than God. It shows what can happen when Satan can gain control over somebody like Jim Jones and use that person for pure evil.
A part of me wishes I never saw this movie. However, it did a great job with the chronicles of his early life, his rise to power and fame, and his eventual downfall. And the actors did a great job in the movie. Especially the late Powers Boothe. He made you believe that HE WAS Jim Jones.
Substitute "greed" for "megalomania" and you will have hit the nail on the head.

No he didn't, he was a wrong un' right from the get go. In his childhood other children were forbidden from having anything whatsoever to do with him due to his parents refusal to do anything about his persistently deranged, perverted and downright dangerous behaviour. He used to kill pets so he could conduct funeral services for them, a very sick person right from the beginning who was only attracted to religion because it allowed him to assume a position of control over the most vulnerable. There was nothing at all 'pure' and 'innocent' about that person.
The scenes in this film depicting Jones's early childhood are only based on 2 sources: peer testimony, and Jim Jones's own personal anecdotes. A lot of artistic liberty was taken here, but the one commonality that seems to be agreed upon by general consensus is that, at least according to the neighbourhood children who grew up with Jones, he was an eccentric, bossy and peculiar child who was often not allowed to play with the other children, and he was fascinated with the aesthetics of religion. He would regularly find domestic pets and wild animals (some sources say they were naturally dead, other sources say he would kill these animals himself) and he would stage flowery mock-funerals for them. At best he was a very strange person from childhood; some people believe that he had a personality disorder stemming from abuse that he may have endured when he was younger but because he's long-dead we are never going to know.

I saw this when I was approximately 5 or 6 years old and this show traumatized me. I couldn’t tell if it was real or a movie but then I recognize Randy Quaid and it says “based on the true story”. It’s shot like a documentary that’s why it fooled me! But this is how I was taught about never “drink the kool aid”
The sad thing is, Jones started out with very good intentions. He believed in what he was doing and really wanted to help everyone. He was doing all the right things, but he was trying to move too fast. The extreme racial tensions at the time worked against him. He had to come up with something to overcome that, and that's when he went sideways. Evidently, "Father Devine" encouraged Jones to use whatever was necessary to bring wealth to his church, whether that was women or convincing members of his flock to give up to him everything they had. His mansion was in the Philadelphia suburbs. People like Jim Jones and Father divine and other cult leaders like Daddy Grace are charlatans who prey on simple people. They bilk them out of all their possessions and even own their souls. Very tragic.

boothe did absolutely amazing in this film.
I wonder if the reason that Jim and Marceline were portrayed as being childless was because their surviving sons didn't want to be associated with this movie.
And the worst part is that they made it look as though Marceline was the woman on the microphone telling everyone to calm down at the end, and that she actually killed people herself. Nothing could be further from the truth. Marceline was trying to stop the killing of the children, and only took the poison herself after all the children were dead.
Did you hear the death tape? I thought the woman telling them there wouldn't be pain, wasn't this Marceline? Or I was wrong.... I have no idea :o the tape is so horrendous 😒😒😔

@@thatone6254 They made the movie less than two years after the tragedy. There are survivors who say that the movie is only about 65% accurate.
