Thanks for watching this weeks episode! We hope you liked it! Now, let us know about your thoughts of TILLER vs WHEEL ?? Likes, Dislikes? Which one do you prefer?
Have used both tillers & wheels, think for your boat a wheel is the way to go. Tillers are better on very small boats when one needs faster feedback. Wheels feel better on long passages.
Tiller all the way. If you want to use a Windvane consider chopping of those big ugly davits. They dont work well together. On passages you cant use them anyway.
Lori & Luke, guess no matter what you do some expert is going to say it is all wrong. Guess they want to decide what you are going to eat the next meal too. When dating my wife she asked why have you not asked me to change anything. The thought had never occurred to me, so told her if I wanted you to change would be dating someone else. 43 years later would still not change a thing.
As a machinist and fabricator with many decades of making things, I have so many concerns about the steering cable alignment, the rudder post size and the welds. I would recommend a lot of short trial runs and an inspection before heading off too far. This is meant to be constructive. Great video though, and your can-do attitude is admirable.
Hi! A suggestion: Next time you use Sikaflex do not tighten the bolts to the max. Tighten them slightly, wait for curing and the next day tighten the nuts to the final torque. A better alternative to Sikaflex for fixed items such as the pedestal would be butyl tape. Less messy and can easy be separated if needed. Good luck and regards from Switzerland, Silvano
Great suggestion! Thanks. We did do a second tightening the next day but we can see how giving it some time would be more beneficial. Not sure the tape exists here in Brazil. We actually had a friend bring in 3M tape for our windows from the USA (it's still in the box but we knew it wasn't available so we planned ahead). We will have to look into that. Would love to use the tape, looks like it would have a much nicer finishing than the sikaflex.
@@lahakai It's wonder- full how much your sailboat can mean to you. Check out the story of "Sailing Emerald Steel" if you haven't heard of this couple yet.
Before I put my foot in my mouth, let it be known that I am no nautical engineer. I am a fully fledged Landlubber, but my brother is as crusty of a sailor that there is. He seems to prefer tillers vs. wheel steering and has obviously studied both systems. His sailboats are (I believe) intended for coastal sailing rather than blue water so I guess a tiller makes more sense. His craft are fiberglass and that may be part of his decision since steel may have just a skosh more strength than fiberglass. Oh, well---I like the change over that you all made as a tiller seems rather flimsy from my perspective. You see, if I go to sea I intend to outfit myself in every life preservative measure available---including a strap on lifeboat! Thanks for this enlightening episode sustaining my vote for a stronger steering system.
Thank you for watching! There are definitely benefits on either side. Good eye on the previous tiller - the rudder stock was very thin and it appeared that the extension of the tiller was supporting it. So when it was removed we had to make the stock thicker. Perhaps a tiller with the thicker stock wouldn't be so bad.
Great job on the helm install. I agree with Silvano, butyl tape is a better alternative. As far as helm vs tiller, that's an age old debate. I like the helm, at least you don't hit everyone in the cockpit when you come about .
Thanks so much! The tape looks like a great option! We are going to look into it for future use though we are not sure it is available in Brazil. We had to get a friend to bring in some 3m tape from the USA for our future windows as didn't exist here. So we'll see. Anyways, tiller or helm is a tough one right? Both have pluses and minuses...
I have a tiller on my boat and my next one will definitely have a helm. I use a Raymarine autopilot alot on my tiller and have knocked it off numerous times. Oh and everyone always sits in the way when you make a tack! And new sailors ALWAYS turn the wrong way with a tiller so i always tell them to make sure wich way to turn the tiller then do the opposite :D Saying that, its as simple mechanisim as possible so less to go wrong so thats a point for the tiller tho.
haha yeah these are some of the reasons we went for a helm as well. Though the simplicity of a tiller is very appealing. We see why people are usually divided when it comes to wheels and tillers. Let's see how this one goes!
Tig Welding generates a large amount of heat ... more than mig or stick Welding.. I definitely couldn't spend alot of time on a boat without a proper helm.
Great idea to add external wire chase way. Way too many wires in typical pedestals. You should also be ably to run motor controls they same tube if you mount on pedestal. Cheers Warren
Exactly! Glad you like it! It was such a tight fit without another way to feed wires in. It's an old, used pedestal. So we imagine that there should be more conduits for electrical devices these days in newer designs. But this does the trick for now!
Kudos for the graphics and overall editing. I predict a growing viewership in the near future…Looks like you’ll have a stout little cruiser when you’re finished. Hope to see you out there. We’ll be flying a Brazilian flag to represent my girlfriend 😊
Nice Job! In this case I think you have enhanced the robustness and not overly complicated the system. I could not tell, but is the bottom of the rudderstock passage into the hull extension above, or below the waterline? Great if it is well above, other wise you will need some kind of gland seal on it. Also, what are your plans for a auto helm system and what provisions did you make for it when you put in the radial drive? Great Video! I appreciate you showing the mistakes that were made and what you did to correct them! Keep At It!
Thanks, we are so glad you liked it! The passage is above the waterline and there is a decent clearance there. A bit of the top of the rudder is outside of the water. We haven't made specific plans about an auto helm, only that there is ton of space below deck for modifications. And this system is pretty basic so we're betting on it being adaptable. We're open to any suggestions on an auto helm if you have any!
Great transformation to the steering, looks really good. Not so sure on the davits though, they look out of scale to the rest of the boat, but I'm sure they will look fine once all the other work is completed. Nice to get a video of the whole process.
Thanks so much! The angle of the camera and the lense makes the davits look pretty wild. We didn’t have much images of them at this time so we used this one. Also, they need the solar panels on top still. We will show them again in future videos so you can see the actual proportion.
@@lahakai Yes you did say in a previous vlog that you were going to get as much solar as you could on the davits, so they will have to be quite beefy, especially if your going to hang a tender off them as well. Looking forward to the next installment
Sorry, but I've been looking back a bit. And have some welding experience myself. But, what I know is. That you, steel and stainless steel. Use special electrodes to weld. And very slowly, so that your steel doesn't get too hot. Greetings from Spakenburg, the Netherlands.
We know know how to weld but not enough to get that nice finishing on stainless steel. So we did hire someone to do these details. We will be learning this in the future when we have more time. Always good to know a little of all skills!
You should have used thicker steel for the gudgoen plates. There is a lot of force on a hybrid rudder like that one. I would doube,if not triple the thickness. There is too much space between the bottom of the rudde quadrant and upper rudder post bushing. This allows all the weight of the rudder to be suspended on the gudoen plates. which is why they should be much thicker
Nice video, what is your backup plan should a cable fail? I've seen bigger boats use two hydro cylinders but on helms, I've seen some manual tillers that you can attach, just curious...
Thanks!! Yes we have a small back up tiller that connects to the top. We found this helm one a second hand shop so it’s not very complex, so we just made a place on the top of the rudder stock to easily connect a tiller.

That is a big change from tiller to helm nice extension of the boat well done
It’s a huge change right?! The extension made the cockpit enormous now in comparison to the previous set up.

Great progress!!! Will you be installing an autopilot?
Thanks!! We do want to install one. There are no definite plans at this moment, but we did leave enough space to make modifications when we can.
Great modification. The system is very basic and you have an easy access. That should be quite reliable on a long term.
We really hope so! The system is pretty straight forward so repairs should be manageable. 🙏 ⛵️
All this time I thought you were keeping the tiller….I like the wheel/helm much better! THOSE DAVITS THOUGH!! 🍻
The timeline is a little confusing isn't it? 😅 Maybe we'll make a little chart on Patreon to help keep track!

How much did that cost? The conversion of the tiller to a wheel?
Ttillers are simple and its a boat not a car.
You need to find a real welder! Some of those welds are horrific and will not hold up at all!
