Ten years ago, I heard an astonishing voice stand out in a group filled with strong singers. The voice belonged to Frazey Ford; the group was The Be Good Tanyas.
The Be Good Tanyas released three outstanding albums - Blue Horse is still a favorite of mine - and then, silence. It's been four years since we've heard Ford's lilting, laid-back sound, but now she's back with a solo record. The album, Obadiah (which also features another Be Good Tanya, Trish Klein) follows Ford's love of rhythm and blues and traditional American country music.

Ford came to the NPR Music offices for this Tiny Desk Concert - armed with her acoustic guitar and a cheetah jumpsuit - and lulled our office with four beautiful tunes. If you loved The Be Good Tanyas, like me, you'll be thrilled to hear her sing again. And if you've never heard Frazey Ford, you're in for a treat.

Heartbreaking and totally uplifting!!!! The truest, most honest song I've ever heard!
Trying to figure out the quality her voice has that makes it SO appealing! Certainly one of the most unique and recognizable voices in music today. She could sing practically anything and I'd listen.

Just one of the great moments from this skilled musician. But I especially loved "If You Gonna Go" - well, and all of them. And also The Be Good Tanyas (adore their song "Littlest Birds").
Love this at a very core level. Simple song structure, yet unknowingly deep and magical.

I don’t know what it is but this song popped into my head. Then I see this post! Maybe the explosion in Beirut made me think of firecracker. Maybe everything going on in the world. Anyway her songs are beautiful and comforting even if the subtext is troubling sometimes. Kinda like life.

Is it just me.... I can't understand but 1 in four of the words she's singing. She has a great voice but sounds like she's singing from under a pile of duvets. I like singers who can enunciate words properly. Dare say I'll cop some flac for this, ce la vie.
