One piece of lore I love that I never see people talk about is the "Hunger" short story from the re-release of The Flood. It tells the story of a flood infection from the POV of the Infection form. It's creepy as hell.
To anyone wondering its good, someone whent over it on reddit however I didn't realise you meant the book at first, that I actually have lol. Haven't gotten round to reading it yet, kinda hyped to now. Having lore reveal the independent portion of a flood forms consciousness is really interesting and I think it was done well, gave me chills.
Following the whole Iris campaign with my older brother back in the day, really was something else. Really can't understate how unsettling it was just the whole vibe of being in the earlier internet days downloading videos off of the forums and waiting for them to buffer in quicktime just to unravel cryptic messages of star coordinates and mysterious microorganisms.
As an Iris alum who was there from the moment the "protesters" were found in times square and recieving that very first email with the "hidden link" I was hooked. I was one of the first 200 to unlock terminals 1 and 2, and was there for the others but the community had decided we would share the rewards with others who hadnt yet unlocked them yet. Ive kept the Iris symbol as my profile picture ever since. My gamerpic, the Tshirts and my print of the cradle of life comic from the first terminal are some of my favorite possession i have in my gaming life. Iris will always be a part of my life as it was one of the most fun and memorable summers of my life. The community coming together at HBO and then the ARG spinoff forum were all some of the best people you could explore halo with. Thanks for the video Luc and for reviving so many great memories ❤
I love the way soma saw the flood approaching during a beautiful sunset. Its like the opposite of that saying about dawn being the darkest before day. Right at sunset, when night begins and the darkness comes. She sees the of the end of days at the end of the day. Purely symbolic.
While I won't say I learned anything new, it was great to hear you go over some of the old Halo mysteries and stories that made part of my childhood great. I miss talking about this stuff with a few irl friends and the great people that used to be on the halo wiki. Gods I miss those times.
It kinda sucks that we don't see many cryptic/mystery stories and ARGs in general these days (at least ones that gain wide spread attention). Espically in an era where everyone is constantly online, and telling stories like these should be incredibly easy now since you can reach a vast audience. Which is why I love Kane Pixel's Backrooms series, because how mysterious and cryptic it is and it shares alot of classic ARG elements (despite not really being an ARG).
It's actually BECAUSE everyone is constantly online that shit like this doesn't work anymore. A big part of alternate reality games is the blending together or real life and stories, and people are past the point where they want anything that involves the real world as part of the story. And because ARG's have happened in the past and gotten big, everyone is better at spotting them, and the second they see what's happening they go "Oh this must just be some stupid ARG" and they lose interest. There was a small window of time when this kind of thing worked, when the web was well established enough that people knew how to use it, but not enough that it was completely mainstream. The clearnet is dominated by a small handful of sites and companies that would never allow this shit to take place these days.
@@creed8712they did one for the reveal trailer, the community had to solve a puzzle both online and with irl decrypters objects sent to content creators and stuff in order to get the link to the trailer, then revealed to the public after it was discovered. Bungie also kept doing this in Destiny, characters from the game have "sent" stuff irl to people, stuff that had to be found after solving an arg, idk if it was extra lore or something unimportant tho
My favorite piece of lore about ilovebees itself is that it existed on pay phones. During Hurricane Ivan a gamer went to one of the pay phones and the Bungie employee broke character and told him "Dude, it's a hurricane. Put the phone down."
The 2000's era was a time that belonged to viral marketing campaigns. Seriously the way they were performed and how people manage to pull them off was phenomenal. We had Halo, District 9, Cloverfield etc. I remember being absolutely immersed in the Cloverfield viral marketing and I deadass thought some of it was actually real (I was 11 years old cut me some slack XD). As much as I wish we had more of this stuff in this day and age, sadly we will never get viral marketing campaigns on this level ever again due to how much the internet has evolved and how easy it is to debunk information. The reason they worked in the 2000's was because the internet was still in it's infancy and not many people knew if the information was real or fake. That's what made them so damn good.
Imagine being a marathon fan back in the day, seeing these letters and then forgetting about them as you play Halo, only to then hear the letters again in Halo 3. I wonder if that was Bungie's way of saying Cortana was going rampant in 3.
18:19 I've always wanted a Halo Reach spinoff where we play from the POV of the Succor spec ops crew during the Reach invasion, leading up to Alpha Halo. We could play as a customizable Kusovai, with Full-Jaw R'tas as our Carter and Thel as our Colonel Holland counterparts. Maybe foreshadow some Brute/Minor Prophet tension and some admiration for humans despite absolutely decimating them.
Videos like this make me fall in love with Halo all over again and then I feel low on what has become of it. The missed opportunities for lore, intrigue and a realised world for Halo Infinite.
My personal favorite bit of halo lore that isn’t talked about enough is how Master Chief’s Mark VI Mjolnir armor auto jacks him off allowing for the chief to truly “finish the fight”.
5:45 Perhaps with the cortana letters when it references their devil it doesn’t mean the chief solely perhaps it is implying ancient humanity during their war against the forerunners before they even learned of the flood. Since the forerunners simply saw humanity as expanding and killing everything without realising it was the flood they were attacking they saw ancient humanity as “devils”
I would honestly love to see a full video dedicated to ilovebees. I've always known about it via just being a bit of a lore junkie for halo but I've only ever heard of it and some parts of it. Never the full story so I'm so down to watch that!
My favorite lore story is when they inserted an AI into the slip space and then in a matter of hours the AI lost reason and achieve a god like status, it also describes the presence of other beings in the slip space and since then they haven’t touch that again
I love it when Halo's Lore goes dark, ominous and cryptic! its honestly the best kind of lore, would love to see that kinda lore return to the franchise someday.
It's a travesty I was too young to take part of the Iris campaign. The perfect marketing campaign 343i could develop to bring back fans to the franchise would be something like Iris. Could be about the Banished awakening the Flood or more Forerunner stuff, just the possibilities are endless.
Always love to see the extended lore of the Halo universe, always so well written and in depth, to a level reached by only a few other IP's. Only wish more of it was available to learn in the games themselves, like marathon did through completely optional terminals and environmental story telling, a codex of sorts could maybe introduced in a future game perhaps? Alas it is what it is, at least we get the lore in some form.
When you said Tsutomu Nihei, I honestly choked. Dude did Knights of Sidonia, which is a manga series I've bought every volume of and enjoyed (he has little behind-the-scenes parts at the end of some and the main mecha in Sidonia was made by him irl by just kitbashing different things together)
I just realized an Halo EAS scenario for Halo would be cool as like a small piece of lore for the covenant invading Reach then an elite busts down the door or something. COME ON 343 YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO WORK WITH!!!!!!!
Its so crazy to see the IRIS campaign. Clearly Bungie was inspired to keep the creepy voice thing, if you play Destiny 2, tell me that voice didnt remind you of The Witness.
What happened to be the number for the CDC? I’m so blown away by Bungie’s creativity for these. And all of this was done still with the implications that Forerunners were Humans.

The idea that I was reading science data from a SUPER advanced species at its wits end. Who just couldn't deal with the parasite. It was interesting, but also sparked dread.
Just to clear something up. In the video you said that she packed up her painting equipment, and headed to her town? Town? There were other forerunners living in a primitive community? As I understand it, she was the only inhabitant on the planet when the brush generated the first flood image. As a trivia: there was an American painter by the name Wolliam Sommar. Somas name is pretty much based on Sommar. (If you say Sommar fast, it sounds Soma.
