It’s nice to see someone actually test the 940 instead simply commenting they don’t cut well. It looked like it cut well to me. Plenty good enough for my needs, plus they carry so well in the pocket.
I own both and don't remember the last time i carried my pm2, takes up more room in the pocket and has less cutting edge. Been carrying the 940 everyday since i bought it, cuts like a dream for my needs.
Great video. The results were what I expected. I was a little surprised to see that the 940 did as well as it did. I was happy to see it though since I own a 940. I like it but I do need to get the blade reprofiled to 15 degrees.
One of the (unusual) things I’ve noticed about the 940 is that it cuts cheese better than many Spydercos-seems like the narrow height and wedge-like shape yield better cuts through sticky mediums. Even when sharp the 940 is not great on paper. Good test, Doody.
The 940 seemed to have done surprisingly well. I’ve not been made aware of any issues with BM steel. But, as a general consensus in the industry and among enthusiasts, Spyderco reigns king. I doubt there are many BM fans that would disagree.
The 940 is actually a Spey blade. Just look at Warren Osborne's background before he moved to Texas and started selling knives. There is a reason for the blade shape.
had this same thing happen between my CPM-M4 940-2 and my CPM-M4 Manix 2 lightweight. i got the 940 first and processed about 120 boxes at work, could barely cut paper after i was done, I decided this is what to expect for CPM-M4. Fast forward a couple months i pick up my Manix 2 in CPM-M4, except this time i had a load of 160 boxes to break down. After i was done with that i tested the Manix 2 on receipt paper and to my surprise it still cut clean, hell it still shaved. When i got home i stropped it and it came back to the way it was when i first got it. My 940 HAAATES my strop for some reason so i always need to sharpen it. all in all spyderco seems more quality to me, considering the fact i spent $220 on my 940 and about $140 after tax for my manix 2 lightweight. I'd say benchmade needs to get a better hold on their QC, its not even a competition at this point.
I bought a 940 back in 2020. Nice knife, but as far as extended cutting is concerned it’s Spyderco all day. Their heat treat is superior on s30v. My 940 performs on par with Spyderco bd1n. When I use my knife it’s usually for prolonged tasks. I need my edge to hold up, and for that reason I usually carry Spyderco.
What do you mean by aftermarket edge? I dont understand... The Spyderco with factory edge vs a 940 with an "aftermarket" edge. Im curious as to the angle. Also, what is going on with Benchmade that makes you dislike them?
@@doodysdaggers so how would that be even a close comparison? The whole video came off as a "Benchmades are not good knives" video. All that aside, why do you didlike Benchmade so much?
@@rommelthedesertfox3089true but you aren’t getting choke up spots filled with jimping on any BM. The crazy locked in feeling where it wouldn’t go anywhere even if your hands were covered in oil. Great cut test as always Dood!!! I don’t really like Benchmades geometry not slicey enough for me. Oh and I’ll be hitting you up for a slip for my Barlow when it comes!!
IIRC, Larrin Thomas did some tests on S30V and found Benchmade to have better edge retention than Spiderco on S30V. Is that worth $100 extra for the butterfly tax? Depends on the buyer, I think. I'm a 940 guy, but Spidercos are arguably better knives in most regards. If you take subjective views on aesthetics out of the equation, I think I'd rather have a Spiderco PM2 over a 940 if I had to only choose one, forever. Specifically the PM2 in Magnacut. Yet, I EDC the 940 in S30V. I do actually use it daily, multiple times a day. Also the 940 definitely has a blade more similar to a reverse japanse-tanto shape than a sheeps-foot. Blade shapes are relatively fluid but sheepsfoot are almost always a straight edge with a curved drop. The 940 is a curved edge and a straight "reverse-tanto shaped spine. I don't see the argument for it being a sheepsfoot.
Interesting video. Fun watch. I saw your reply about Cutleryshoppe regarding the Wharny PM2. It’s in XHP which I’m not familiar with. Quick search looks like it’s a bit like 20CV maybe? Have you worked with it?
Way back when I was 12 I loved looking through the Benchmade website, was so cool. (Current website is shit by comparison, I promise.) Model 42 was the apple of my eye. To be an adult and hear how BM has "fallen off" truly does sadden me. Along with newer designs that just don't look as good. I bought my one and first BM over a year ago for 80 bucks new, a fixed blade modeled like the ka bar TDI but wharncliffe. Feels great in hand... my Kershaw was more factory sharp by miles and miles but still a dear blade... an old discontinued one... they had a lot of cool designs they will never bring back. They speak of the Butterfly Tax... seems about right. No reason they can't price like spyderco... especially when G10 is often not standard. (I have grivory... it is perfectly fine. The BM Azeria is nice but as a non folding knife (originally an HK design, hard to base BM's quality off just that one. Thinking about getting a griptilian but why do that when the spyderco Endura 4 lightweight with emerson wave exists for 90 bucks opposed to the other around 130 if not more so. Endura is prettier... I'd consider the bugout but that is 150 minimum... with the cheap scales, quickly become twice the spyderco price is you want comparable steel and handles that are nice. BM seems a bit pretentious, the fact they donate to anti-gun org.s arguably is part of it. That would never make me write them off, I can separate the art from the artist, but it is a weird move considering how they sell highly tactical knives to US citizens. Plus the knife and gun world overlap soo much... just optically dumb. I mean... have gun control like the UK and then carrying any knife is the next thing to go. How you can't carry a knife... are subject to the whims of people carrying them illegal with bad intent... taking in so many migrants only made knife attacks more bountiful. The BM name is such a big deal... feels like they abuse the fact, realize they can get away with sub designer brand products because they label it the apex designer knife.
The 940 most certainly has a reverse tanto blade style, not sheepsfoot. Curious why you used the 940 for comparison and not the 290BK Full Immunity which has the Wharncliffe blade style 🧐

I was surprised too! It definitely did better than I thought it would
Awesome test to see, ill still carry my 940-2 over my s35vn pm2 tho. I just love the 940 so versatile and much much easier to carry.
I going to say spyderco for the win!!!!!!!
I have a lot of S30v from both companies and it's always been plenty good for me on the daily. Great video, thanks for the testing.

That’s weird! Maybe I should add a cheese element to the cut tests 😉
Going out on a limb here, but guessing you are a wisconsinite!!!!!!
I was positive I already knew what the answer would be & I completely agree. Spyderco really is just that good!
Nice to see another test.
Just goes to show what Benchmade is charging all that extra money for. Respect. D
I really like Spyderco's CPam-S30V. Treatment seems very good on every piece in it that I have from them.
I have Benchmade folders and Spyderco folders and have not pitted one against the other. They suit me fine. Appreciated your demonstration though..!!
So what to purchase?
Black G10 with S30V at $205, or
CF with S90V at $315?
Hmm… is s90v $110 better than S30V?
Hard to say. With the added CF upgrade, I say $315 is worth it.
The 940 is better for digging my arrows out of trees when I completely miss my target! 😅😅😂😂😂

Benchmade should make a mule line so they could experiment with more steels and heat treating.

Sure, but I don’t have an use for a spey blade
