For a while it has seemed like the demand for sports cars has been dwindling gradually as people demand more from their everyday cars instead. However the BMW Z4 reminded me just how exciting a sports car can be out on the road, even if it's not got an abundance of power.

Great review and agree with all your comments. I have the same model and for me it’s got enough torque and power for our British roads, it’s given me the fun back in my driving. As for looks it gets noticed all the time I have had countless people admiring the car! It’s not what I would call a proper sports car like a Porsche 911 but then BMW are marketing this as a roadster which can be used a a daily driver, I absolutely love it!
Thanks a lot! Yes exactly, its very usable power, just about the right amount for British roads. But yeah I agree, its just on the edge of sports car category but definitely not as capable as some of the offerings from Porsche etc. Helps for its daily drivability as you say. Thanks for watching!

Really informative review, keep up the great work! Would be great to see you review a 2020 Mazda MX-5 with the updated 181hp engine 👌 Although it has less horsepower and torque than the Z4 20i you reviewed, it also weighs a few hundred kilos less, so it has a fairly similar power to weight ratio. I agree with what you said, hope that the sales of SUVs won't make companies axe production on their 2 seater sportscars.

Yeah the SUV pandemic is a very annoying one, would be sad to see more sports cars disappear but it seems like its just a matter of time now...

I bought the M40i version last year and it’s so good. Always get admirers as they are quite rare still.
Surprisingly large amounts of room too. Managed to get a full trolley of shopping in the boot once so needless to say weekend luggage was no problem.
Cruising around with the roof down is ideal for improving metal health that’s for sure!
As an added bonus I ain’t got any fake vents on my model 👍🏼

Nice review! I just bought one here in Hong Kong - a 6-speed MANUAL - so not sure why you don't get this in the UK! For some reason I just don't get the kind of exhaust note you get here, is that because I am not revving high enough? I am careful about the car and shift according to the dash indicator, maybe that's why I am not having much fun??
Thanks for watching and congrats on your purchase! Ah it must just be market preferences, just the automatics over here. I'm not sure what the Hong Kong regulations are like but over in the UK we have quite strict regs so things like exhaust noise usually suffers, however this Z4 did make a decent noise. You should be good to rev the engine to around 6,200rpm once its fully broken in etc, and that might allow you to get some more sound yes 👍
Maybe a manual transmission would have made it more complicated for them to meet emissions standards... Like you I think it's still a relevant car (I ordered a 30i). But I also fear they're going to disappear and that's probably the last of the Z4 line (the last one with a slightly noisy and fun petrol engine). The fun aspect of cars is not only going out of fashion, it's actively being hunted down as politically incorrect and frowned upon. It sounds gloomy but I think that in ten years it will only be electrical SUVs and maybe a dying breed of supercars. This 'relatively cheap and usable sports cars' segment is on the verge of extinction.
Yes more than likely that would have been the case. I agree though, I think petrol cars in general are being hunted down - although I do feel we need to do something about climate change, cars make up a very small % of global emissions and I can't help but think there are more cost effective methods of reducing global emissions in the short term. Not to mention the damaging effects of mining lithium for batteries in these new EV's, and the production of brand new cars in general. I really do hope the future is good for the industry and for enthusiasts too, although I do fear what you're saying may become reality. I get a bit of a s2000 vibe from the side profile. I agree with you... all car companies, STOP PUTTING FAKE VENTS ON CARS! lol... Good to know they backed off on the fat steering wheels, but think about how much warmer your hands would be if it was thicker!

Yes definitely some S2000 vibes here, also looks very similar from some angles to the most recent Mercedes SL. Honestly it is so frustrating with the fake vents, I guess marketing departments tend to have their way these days! Ahaha yes very true, I appreciated the fact I could actually hold this steering wheel. Agree on the manual transmission, would be great to have one in this but sadly it seems like those days are behind us
Almost all of the vents are open (the front and side ones are, I can confirm). Only the ones in the back bumper aren't. :)

That's a difficult one, I think it depends which model of the Z4, but if you're looking at the 30i model and upwards, I'd say the Z4, likely to be more fun than the AWD TTS
