I heard the BRX at the Munich High End. There was a Subwoofer standing next to the Speakers. When i heard them, i thought, ah of course there is a SW involved. But when i looked at the backside of the SW i noticed, that the power cord wasn´t connected to it. Oh boooyyy...... that bass playback was absolutely astonishing. I couldn´t believe my ears and i was so surprised, that these small speakers were able to produce such a unbelievable amount of bass in a very good quality. WoW. .... By the way...your reviews are very entertaining and instructive. Appreciate it. Just subscribed ;).

I wish more reviewers and reviews played a little music. On the computers that most of us use, the sound won't be that great, but it's nice to hear music. It would also be nice to list what bands and tracks you play. I'm always on the search for new music and listen to similar stuff as you do. Enjoyed it.

My first speakers that had crystal clear clarity, when paired with a tube amp it was extremely musical and a joy with every song. Imaging, clarity, transparency, they were all top notch, and its ability to play soft passage softly was so enjoyable I didn't even know music was supposed to be like that. My only gripe with these speakers are that the vocals are not as effortless as I wished it to be.

  • @johndough8115

Any speaker with a Passive Radiator, will tend to have a greatly boosted bass level... as that is one of the main functions of it. The amount of bass effect on them... is dependent on the volume level you play them at. Lower volumes... and the passives are not very apparent. But at high power levels... they will "Excited" greatly, and thus boost the bass response, at a much more dramatic level.
One of the speakers I used to own, was part of a Phillips WOOX boom box. Woox speakers use a special passive radiator, that have 3 expansion rings, to allow for some massive excursion ranges, and also, to allow the passives to be much smaller in diameter than what is typically required.
The boom box has special EQs modes (toggle whichever you prefer) ,that boost the bass levels at lower volume levels.. so that the Passive radiators will get excited at these lower playing volumes. Turning it off, will help at higher volume levels... if the speakers end up being a bit too bassy for your tastes. I believe there was also a user-programmable 5 band EQ, as well.
I will say, they sounded quite sweet. Very clear highs, mids, and a deeply powerful bass... that didnt Distort like typical Ported speakers. Problem is... the Woox passives in mine, were made with foam, and they rotted away. Some of the woox mechanism Ive seen, are made out of translucent plastic... which would make them indestructible.

These GE BRX's are intriguing. I've enjoyed a pair of Triton3+ as mains in HT system or several years now. I wouldn't change those for anything (except bigger Tritons). They mate very well with Martin Logan Motion-series as center and surrounds and in-ceiling atmos speakers since they all have the AMT tweeters. However, for more critical 2-ch listening (where raw impact isn't priority), I stick to open-baffle mains and subs. I wouldn't call GE cheap, but definitely high-value. What makes the Tritons (with amp models) such a great value is they play full-range, and don't demand much power from the HT receiver. Sandy Gross really delivered an excellent line of products with these.

I have a pair of Golden Ear AON 3 speakers, which are these BRX's predecessor. Appears to be similar size drivers, with similar design with the two smaller round passive radiators. The woofers on these have a wave guide though… $1100 a pair…(they are in "socks" a little weird…but I removed them!). Uniquely industrial looking. Lots of bass for their size!! May be betterer for your smaller room. Drive mine with a 19wpc Tube Amp…they sound fantastic in smaller rooms!

Happy Dad's Day, Randyman. So glad that you reviewed these. They really don't get enough attention, though the Audiophile community is well aware of these amazing speakers, as well as the rest of the Golden Ear line.
Designed by Sandy Gross, these speakers really nail the top two priorities for me: Soundstage and Imaging. I am always looking for speakers with an almost holographic presentation of musicians and instruments.
These are true giant killers. Highly, highly recommended, especially for those who want sound as though the musicians were in the room. Be warned: they will give you exactly what is recorded, so if you have a lousy recording, you'll know it instantly with the Golden Ear BRX.
Which makes this a great reviewer's speaker, allowing you to discern even subtle differences in various components and cables. Can't wait to hear your comparisons between these and other speakers, R-Man. Can't wait!

I definitely enjoy being able to hear the music for my own ears. I could tell, these speakers sound fantastic. Tremendous bass, although I tend to lean toward speakers like B&W that place a slightly greater emphasis on midrange clarity. I don't like having to dial down the bass just to get the midrange clarity. Btw, the sound came through just fine and I could tell the difference between Tone On and Tone Off. And please review the Sabaj A10a, it's the only amp that truly challenges the Aiyima A07 dollar for dollar. Yea, the Sabaj A10a is more expensive than the Aiyima A07, but it also sounds better too.

As an owner of these speakers, I’m mostly in agreement with your impressions. I haven’t had the vocal clarity issues you experienced, however. I consider clear vocals one of the great strengths of these speakers. I’m wondering if it may have been a positioning or room issue which caused the results you heard. These are some of the best performing speakers in their class (and even above), and imho, it’s tough to do better.

Hey Randy, great review on this speaker that I was considering. I opted for the Kef R3’s paired up to a Primaluna 200 integrated amp with a Cambridge Audio CXN2. This combo sounds fantastic. I thought maybe you could compare the BRX to the Kef R3’s?

@@bearthetruth Not sure about brighter but I run a Prologue 2 with Kef LS50 ( original ) and a BK subwoofer. I am currently using Tung-Sol EL34s but swap back and forward with Gold Lion KT88s. The KT88s give the sound more oomph and slam while the EL34s are warmer and more mellow.
The LS50s match the PrimaLuna well but a sub is, I think, essential.

I'd love to see a comparison between these and the ELAC Carina. The Carina has a 5 1/4 woofer but also has the AMT tweeter. Similar build quality without the passive radiators. The BRX is subjectively more attractive.

Thanks for the review, I ordered these a few weeks ago (haven't received them yet) and been worried ever since that maybe I made a mistake. My biggest worry is that they might be overpriced, and that they are ugly. However, weirdly enough, here in New Zealand the BRX are actually WAY cheaper (2499 NZD) than the SVS Ultra Bookshelves (2899 NZD), so the SVS (which are the BRX's main competitor I think) are kind of out of the question anyway.

@@AexoeroV My personal opinion is that after you cross a certain price threshold, your room acoustics is going to to be tenfolds more important for sound quality than speaker differences. Hence I'm not super focused on sound quality, as I know for the next couple of years (until I have time to renovate) my acoustics are going to be the clear bottleneck if I find that I'm not loving the sound.

You should hear what the original ESS AMT 1, or later versions like my AMT 1B, loudspeakers sound like.
They would be an obvious choice for a benchline as they are the ones that first used the technology. Let's see what 40 years has gotten us.
ESS used a large six inch dipole AMT with more efficiency and could play lower into the mid-range frequencies. ESS also used passive radiators in many of their designs. My AMT 1B is 98 decibels efficient.

    ON
    MY
    SHORTLIST!!!!
    Nuff!!! Said!!!
Now, I just need to put THESE PUPPIES on shortlist, and combine THESE with a nice Marantz or Yamaha Integrated Amplifier (and with these, I’ll be leaning towards the Yamaha A-S801) and put this combo into my new apartment, and as bass heavy as these little things are NO SUBWOOFER(S) are needed.
If anything at all, I may need to turn down the bass control just a bit on my Yamaha (hypothetically speaking) in order to hear that midrange magic and top-end brilliance you just spoke about (and can confirm listening to these little things on my Apple iPhone 12 PRO/iFi xCAN/Audio Technica MSR7b rig).
And the money I can potentially save by eliminating the subwoofers out of the equation, then that would be money that I can spend on speaker cables (sound that is well balanced, but yet price proportioned with the rest of the system), and sone nice speaker stands.
As icing on the cake, I can spend the rest of the funds on nice phono cartridge to go with my Technics SL-1210 M5G), and add a BlueSound NODE 2 or NODE 2i (which can be plugged straight in, or into the Yamaha A-S801’s DAC’s) and I am going to have me something special that I can enjoy for a VERY LONG TIME.
Between you and Andrew Robinson, it is now QUITE POSSIBLE to piece together a high end system that I am going to enjoy from here to eternity, WITHOUT GOING BROKE, and cleaning out my bank account.
    YOU BOTH ROCK INDEED!
    Great Review “Cheapaudioman”.

Looking forward to your take on them. Reportedly they're pretty good. Better than 50k speakers? That's a joke, right? Cause any 50k speaker they do beat is just a bit... overpriced. Plus, a fair comparison demands using the same evaluation gear.

Sound waves are actually variations in the air pressure around us.. Running fans causes additional sound pulses to be propagated around the room due to the reflections of the waves off the turning blades regardless of whether the fan makes any noise on it's own or not.
Given this fact any and all hifi evaluations with fans running in the listening room are moot, invalid, cancelled, kaput, adios, forget it.
However I still intend to buy these speakers because of how cool looking they are, and let's face it. 3/4 of the reason we continue to buy hifi products that replace what we already have is aesthetics and or boredom and or the short term gratification of getting something new which feeds our constant appetite for novelty. Squirrel !!!
