Thanks for the Video. Looks like a pretty easy job. My 1998 Mercury Big Foot still has the original timing belt. I ordered my belt from Mercury for $60 US. It is a Gates branded belt, but with a quicksilver part number on the package. The power head on my Merc is the same an F25 Yamaha. The F25 is the same as the F40 with a cylinder chopped off. So most parts are interchangeable.

Gday mate i have a 2021 40 hp and i think they have been the same configeration since about 2013 ,it is one thing that i did notice was no tensioner on the cam belt i suppose they dont need them being only a 40hp . How much would you have paid to do that in a shop , probably a lot this is why i have always done my own servicing mine is still under a warranty but it aint going back to have me slugged x hundred dollars for some one to change the oil at 20 hrs these are pretty simple motors and you tube is your friend ,plenty of forums to get advice . Basic maintenance oil water pump impellor ect and your engine will run forever yamahas didnt get there reputation from building crap motors great video for people to learn how to do the job themselves put more up as there aint to many on 40hp four strokes take care .

Nice video, thanks! I'm no engine guy, but having owned this exact engine for many years I've done a bit of basic maintenance on it (assisted by youtube). I may have a go at changing the timing belt this fall, so this video is going in the save folder.
The little "half moon key", what is the purpose of that? And did you use the "piston stop tool" before loosening the fly wheel nut with the impact driver?

    600 for a starter 😮
I replaced mine with an Amazon one and so far, after 4 years it's still going strong

It’s called a Happy Troller. When it’s in the up position it helps with planning out (not useful for me) then with a string pop it down and it help to slow down your trolling speeds. Great motors! Thanks for watching.

There should be companies that can rebuild that starter in your town for a third of what you paid. Did you torque down the flywheel?

For sure. I didn’t have one to rebuild. The last one jammed and broke off the Bendix gear. Honestly I was pretty shocked at the prices from Yamaha. Great motor but man. Thanks for watching.

How did you torque the flywheel nut without it turning?

You can use a piston stop tool. It threads into the spark plug hole. Do a search and there should be a good explanation.

I’m not 100% sure I’ve owned the boat for three years and and it’s never been replaced. Definitely not an OEM belt so that’s not a good thing. Thanks for watching

I hate 4 strokes cause of this type of maintenance the belt snaps or loosens up bang new engine 😅

That’s the truth. And you gotta take out a mortgage just to even buy a boat make s it even scarier lol. Thanks for watching

I like 2 strokes too, especially smaller hp engines, but I don't miss the smoke, fouled plugs, and oil on the water. I own the 25 mercury 4 stroke, which has a similar Yamaha power head. It's been going 25 years with annual oil and spark plug changes. You couldn't pay me to go back to a 2 stroke.
