The Altra Lone Peak 8 is an interesting trail shoe, and I feel like they're going to be hit or miss for many.
The good with the Lone Peak 8 is that it's similar to the Lone Peak 7, it's fairly breathable, and it delivers an awesome width through the forefoot. My gripe with the 8 is that I don't think it's going to align with everyone.
In my Altra Lone Peak 8 review, I'm going to cover the key details that you should know before investing in this model.

At the end of the day, I know I sound wicked negative about the Lone Peak 8, but don't take that as it's not a great shoe for everyone.
I feel like this will be a model (kind of similar to the 7 in this sense) that, if it resonates with you, then it will REALLY resonate with you. That's just not me.

I really enjoy the fit and feel of the Lone Peak. They seem to have moved Lone Peak into a hiking shoe you can run in vs a running shoe you can hike in. It seems if you want a primarily trail running shoe they are pushing people towards the Timp 5. Then of course they have the Mont Blanc Carbon for racing and other models with higher stack heights. I believe the Timp 5 is even lighter than the Lone Peak 8.

@@thatfitfriend I loved my pair of LP6s and just bought another lightly used pair because I hated the 7s so much. Probably done with that series for hiking, but I just got a pair of the Timp 5s and they feel great so far! Different fit, but a solid, comfortable shoe.

I just returned the lone peak 8. I like the appearance of the shoe, however I removed the insole, stepped on it and the outside of my foot slightly under the pinky toe joint slightly hangs over the outsole .
I’m considering trying their wide lone peak . Seems like it only comes in the color way that you’re reviewing. Question:Is this the regular or wide witch version ?

    • @thatfitfriend

Every issue you mentioned are the same issues I had with the Lone Peak 5. Altra needs to get on top of this lol, especially with durability. I got rid of mine and replaced them with Vivobarefoot Primus Trail and Nike Terra Kiger (4mm drop is a sweet spot for me), I love the Terra Kiger for fast days but the grip is lacking.

I love your in-depth reviews of shoes, very impressive. I used to use Adidas Crazytrain Elite Boost shoes and loved them, but they are way past due to replace. I do 75% lifting (not extremely heavy, machines and freeweight) and 25% crosstrainer/rowmachine/stepups cardio. Wat would you recommend? Currently looking at Metcon 9, Dropset 2, Nano X3 and Reign 6 (but other suggestions available in de eu welcome too)

@@thatfitfriend I already cut down my choice to the dropset or the reigns, and ordered the dropsets because the toe drop is larger and I prefer that for squats! I was going to order the reign too and try them both on, but now I'll fltry the dropset first.

I find this interesting because I like my shoes to fit like you show. I want zero material touching my toes anywhere. That aside, do these shoes have a 100% flat footbed? No contouring or arch support? Any arch support, even a semblance, hurts my left foot (a lot). Like, I need flat, like a board tied to my foot, lol. So far, I have Lems and they aren't flat at all. It is almost like they have negative drop in the heel, and I don't enjoy it.

    • @thatfitfriend

      Different strokes for different folks!
These run pretty dang flat, I think you'll like them if that's a big ask of yours!

So, I finally got to try a pair of these, and I swear they were shaped from a last of my foot. I don't really need trail shoes, though, and they are way too soft underfoot. Any suggestions on a shoe that fits really similar to this as a hybrid cardio/training shoe (indoors low intensity cardio and typical barbell movements not crossfit style)? 0-4mm drop, no arch support or contouring, firm and low cushion, and low flex/ high rigidity from about the ball back to the heel (like the nano x1).
I really need a wide forefoot, medium to wide toe box and no arch support in a shoe that has firm cushioning. It has been proving hard to find. So far, I am not in love with true barefoot shoes. I like the firmness of a thin sole but not so much the flex when lifting. Idk, I just don't love a flexible shoe when doing power cleans.

Great, honest review, as usual. Do these have any arch? I like my shoes to be completely flat inside. As a matter of fact, I struggle to see the point of barefoot shoes with arch support (I sadly found out pretty much all Lems have some arch and a lot of Altra).
Anyway I have seen you mentioning it for some shoes but not for all. I feel like it would be an helpful info in the construction section.

"a lot of Altra" do not have arch in them. Go actually try them on. I've been wearing Altra since 2012 and they are super flat / no arch whatsoever. Topo, on the other hand, have an immense amount of arch support.

I found a pair of 7’s at a discount store for $52, so definitely worth a try for me. I wear barefoot shoes 90% of the time, but for super rough trails these shoes feel amazing, so much more cushion than I’m used to. It’s like a barefoot shoe with some cushion.

what do you think is the biggest difference between the 7 and the 8? It seems there is a big contrast between your review in 7 and 8?

    • @thatfitfriend
      @thatfitfriend  4 місяці тому +2

Yeah, the 7s were okay, but the 8s have been so underwhelming and I think it has to do with the upper for me. 7s felt like they were a smidge more rigid with more padding around the boot which helped hold my feet in place better. For whatever reason, I could never get an equal amount of security in my 8s
