Thank you so much :) I had to fill my Mustang to a qtr tank every second day xD so I did not leak so much. After watching this I was able to change it on my lunch break. Now full tank of gas here I come :)
Thank you for this video. Because of you i was able to replace my bad seal with some help from a friend. Neither of us are mechanics, I am a 51 yr old woman and my friend is a 47 yr old guy. We actually got an old seal off another mustang, came right out of the tank stuck on the fill tube in perfect shape. Put it on into the tank like a charm. I now have a full tank of gas and not a drop on the ground. AWESOME!
Great video. Similar job for the ‘01 cobra, just a bit cumbersome around the IRS. I got the grommet from CJ Pony Parts and the job was done quickly. Thanks!
Sitting here trying to decide to drop the tank like this or try to pull it out through the trunk with the tank just slightly loosened....god damn I wish I had a lift....
How important is the tapered end on the filler pipe? My fuel pump went out and I had about 3/4 thank of gas. So it gave me a lot of trouble getting it down and the pipe removed.
Nice Video, I replace my fuel tank just by myself and of course replace everything that could go bad, even the fuel pump and it wasn't that bad, it took me maybe 4 hours to do the whole thing, (All the seals, fuel pump, new tank cleaning and painting, if you have the right tools this job it's a breeze...!! 1999 GT Convertible
+Luis Vellon I'm getting a new tank in the next couple of weeks. How did you clean your's? Did you paint it for looks, or does paint help prevent corrosion?
+Ghost InTheMachine Hi there, I did not paint the tank, I paint under the car where the tank seats and sanded down the straps and painted, they had some rust so I fix that as well, for the tank just a little advice, you have to be very careful removing the Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve, it is the big one, because of the age it get to brittle and it will break apart easily, and the problem with that is that you not gonna be able to buy it new because it is discontinued from FORD. I'll like to show you some pictures of mine, due to that I had to do a surgery on mine in order to use it back up (It works great) but it was a headache, so be careful with that, other than that everything went well, also I replace my fuel pump for a bigger capacity for future works like bigger Injectors etc. another advice is to replace all the grommets and gaskets or whatever goes in the tank, you don't want to get that baby out again, you won't regret it.... Good Luck with your project...
I have a 99 base mustang I had to drop the tank on the driver side about 8 inches and about 3 on the passenger side to get a good angle. My filler tube is a one piece, I've seen other models with two piece filler tubes. Careful when you are taking it off I cracked the tip of mine which is why I ended up having to drop the tank.
Just tried doing this by myself......I'm warning you right now, if you dont have a lift or a proper jack to hold the tank you need to have a friend help. Spent 2 hours trying to get the fucker out and the new grommet in and I still can't get the damn tube back in. This repair has been the most frustrating thing Ive ever tried to fix on a car and I used to rebuild engines for a living
Lol amen, I’m willing to bet even the GT with solid axle isn’t as easy as this guy makes it out to be! Did this alone on my 99 SVT on the ground!! Good muck
Mine was torn all around and the inner side is still inside. I hope it will not fall in the tank when I remove the fill-up line! I have a 98 cobra, the Ford p/n for the seal/grommet for it is f8zz-9072-ac, it is about 2.5" in diameter, the hole diameter, where the line go in, is about .75", and it is about .75" deep... Ford should have recalled these grommets, I'm surprised how they just get torn so easily/quickly. The thickness is about .25", maybe Ford should have designed them a bit thicker like .50" to be more durable!!!
How big is the seal? The overall diameter of it. I bought a seal that is for a 1998 Ford Mustang but it seems likes it's too big. I just want to know if you know the diameter of the seal.
The title of the video is 99-04 since that is the seal we installed. I said Ford used a similar seal in the video and we listed the video as 81-04 since the install is basically the same concept.
Got a 1998 Gt and have started to get a gas leak, drips bad when I fill up and then has a constant drip line while driving, would that be the same seal?
I and my mechanic are trying to figure out why I keep getting a loose gas cap light on my 03 mustang gt. I had to have the fuel pump replaced and that silly egr light keeps coming on after it was done. The mechanic says no codes are given. I did replace the gas cap so now I'm wondering if the fill tube grommet/seal is bad if that would cause the loose gas cap warning light to come on? Any ideas?
Would this be one of the reasons why my fuel cap light comes on ? I already changed the fuel cap with a new motorcraft cap and it still turns on once I clear code and drive another 100 miles. (Anyone got answers? Thanks )
If your mustang has a 2 piece filler tube you can. you have to unbolt the three bots in the trunk and remove the rubber cover over the tubing, remove the three bolts at the gas cap and the torx screw. There is a hose clamp holding the two piece filler neck together. just undo that and you're in business. If you have a one piece then you have to drop the tank.
Si this may be a dumb question but I replaced my fuel tank on my 02 mustang and now it seams like it is caving in on itself. It is starting to crack the middle of the tank. I can’t figure if it is an air vent issue or the valve are messed up. Can you assist??
Hi, I've noticed the other day when I was filling up my 02 mustang that it was leaking some fuel. I hadn't noticed the fuel leak before, but I did know I had a p0455 Evap large leak code, which I replaced the gas cap thinking that might of been it. I looked under the car at the gas station and saw it coming from the filler neck tube somewhere, I couldn't tell exactly where. From my understanding of what you said on the video and your comment, it is not the seal, but probably the filler neck somewhere, because it only leaks when I fill it up. It doesn't leak any other time. Does this sound correct to you?
Bill Tumas Hey bill thanks for the reply. I actually pulled off the dirt guard today because the seal looked fine from what I could see. Pulling off the dirt gaurd revealed alot of rust. I found the small hole in the side of it.
really you don't need to drop the tank for this repair you can easily do it just sitting on the ground as long as you have two people. you just remove the fill neck
I could pour some gasoline on the ground where my filler neck has been leaking and smoke a cigarette by it and let it burn my leg a little bit and then sue ford, for installing such a crappy part. They need to warn people that it will fail and then there needs to be a recall. I might be able to make millions. I wouldn't mind being a millionaire!
Im about to do this soon, and this is clearly the best video on how to replace it I’ve seen! HUGE appreciation 🙏
Thank you so much :) I had to fill my Mustang to a qtr tank every second day xD so I did not leak so much. After watching this I was able to change it on my lunch break. Now full tank of gas here I come :)
Thank you very much , your introduction was simple and to the point , saved me out of pocket please continue much appreciated. Blessings

Excellent video. Makes it look easy but I really like the step by step method you show. TY

Thanks for the advice!
Amazing video. So easy to follow and I can see every step. Thanks for making efficient accurate content. Keep up the good work
If you don't have a lift you can go in the truck and access it that way. Really easy that way also.
I cr as cracked the tip of mine as well, were you still able to drive your car?
Great video, can I use the same procedure for a 1994 Mustang??
Thanks. I did the whole thing on floor.. Pain in the the butt. . You really helped. Solo..

Ahhh, automobiles and the colorful words they force out of you upon repairs!!
Lol amen, I’m willing to bet even the GT with solid axle isn’t as easy as this guy makes it out to be! Did this alone on my 99 SVT on the ground!! Good muck
I love how he fast forwards the part where hes putting the seal in smh
Ugot8upcobra on Instagram for a simple video how to.
Wow never knew about little rubber. hope mine isn't warn out.looks like a huge pain to change.
Chilton's says only engine oil can be used on the gasket as an "assembly aid".
That’s what I did
What about disconnecting the fuel line from the fuel filter, the evap purge hose, and the hose that connects from the filler neck to the tank????
im glad im not the only one the noticed. this video is useless
Lol ya think! Should mention how much of a bitch this is on a 99SVT with IRS!!! I want to see this guy do one of those! Easy Peasy my @$$!!!

Don’t know but the one I bought looked way to small compared to the one on the tank but worked like a charm once installed

Any idea how much a mechanic should charge for this?
I live in Los Angeles and need this done for my 2000 Mustang GT and my mechanic wants $650. Any idea how much this should cost?
Got a 1998 Gt and have started to get a gas leak, drips bad when I fill up and then has a constant drip line while driving, would that be the same seal?
what kind of lubricant did you use on the seal?
I and my mechanic are trying to figure out why I keep getting a loose gas cap light on my 03 mustang gt. I know the process says 99-04 but is this the same for 98?
Would this be one of the reasons why my fuel cap light comes on ? I already changed the fuel cap with a new motorcraft cap and it still turns on once I clear code and drive another 100 miles.
(Anyone got answers? Thanks )
Yes
You guys make this look easy but it's not. I broke my fill pipe nozzle trying to get it back into the tank.
What if I pull back the carpet in the trunk and access the filler neck from there?
If your mustang has a 2 piece filler tube you can. you have to unbolt the three bots in the trunk and remove the rubber cover over the tubing, remove the three bolts at the gas cap and the torx screw. There is a hose clamp holding the two piece filler neck together. just undo that and you're in business. If you have a one piece then you have to drop the tank.
Do you happen to know the bolt size ? Because I’m missing the bolt to tighten everything and I can’t find someone that knows the size or have an idea
What the part # for that seal......I have 02' GT????
Does this cause Check Engine Light to come on? I have a code that has something to do with evap and I've seen my gas is leaking.
Not usually, that codes often comes from the gas cap not being tight
Si this may be a dumb question but I replaced my fuel tank on my 02 mustang and now it seams like it is caving in on itself. It is starting to crack the middle of the tank. I can’t figure if it is an air vent issue or the valve are messed up. Can you assist??
Honestly I have no idea, I would check to make sure the vent is hooked up and nothing is blocking the filler.
Just remove the filler tube or neck
The inside of the grommet dropped inside the fuel tank. What should I do?
did you ever figure ths out?
Hi, I've noticed the other day when I was filling up my 02 mustang that it was leaking some fuel. Chaos Raven Sounds like the seal to me. Mine was torn at the top so it only leaked when the tank was full.
Bill Tumas Hey bill thanks for the reply. I actually pulled off the dirt guard today because the seal looked fine from what I could see. Pulling off the dirt gaurd revealed alot of rust. I found the small hole in the side of it.
really you don't need to drop the tank for this repair you can easily do it just sitting on the ground as long as you have two people. you just remove the fill neck
the drivers side strap bolt is the worlds biggest pain the ass on the cobra IRS
I thought the rusted lower seatbelt torx was the biggest 😁
Also is this the same way for the 97 GT?
Yes the basics are the same
Lols, I replaced this thing in less than an hour, and I didn’t have to remove the tank (sucks to remove)
how did you manage to do that
Of course mine had to start leaking when I was filling it up 🤦♂️
could a faulty fuel pump seal make your car vibrate
MichaelWolfe would you have any ideas to what it could be, i step on the gas the car starts vibrating and feels a lil week
weak
sounds like a dead cylinder
Is this possible to do without dropping the gas tank?
THANK YOU!!!!
Crazy how the dealer quoted me $625 for this
kool... thnx 👍👍
gracias.!!

Awesome video - thank you (subbed and all that) the grommet part at ua-cam.com/video/2LCeGCvvcUI/v-deo.html was really help full 2:47
I find a better way then u
