I was simply blown away when I watched this on TV in 1989. 🐎💕
The last scenes in the series, the burial and Call's return to Lonesome Dove town strikes me harder and harder as I get older and older. It is such a great movie.
Every time I watch Lonesome Dove, I can never just watch it once. As soon as it’s over, I just want to watch it all again.
The best Western ever. Robert Duvall, Diane Lane and Tommy Lee Jones are incredible.
Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones were born to do this movie! .
+Victor Satas - But it was originally meant for John Wayne and Henry Fonda. The book has been around awhile.
Rick Roscoe
And they originally wanted Jon Voight to play Woodrow Call. He couldn't because of prior commitment to another project. Tommy Lee Jones was second choice. Personally I can't see anyone else play the role like he did. (And I've seen Lonesome Dove put. 2)
@@rickroscoe4734 Wouldn't have been nearly as good.
One of those very rare occasions when the movie is as good as the book. The best western ever made.
+lightheart53 'I couldn't agree more!
A doubly rare occasion. We have here a gentleman among us whom carries the honor of both having read a book and posted a comment on youtube. Were we to meet, Sir, I would buy you a Daniel Webster Cigar for you are a man among men.

lightheart53, I always thought that was tom stone
Unforgiven bt Clint Eastwood runs a close 2nd..lol
Lonesome Dove the greatest western ever wrote.story line is awesome 😊
Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are two of the finest actors I have ever watched. This is by far the greatest western movie ever made, if not the finest movie period.
I'm a Texan, but you don't have to be a Texan to have loved this production. I went straight to my heart. If you don't like or appreciate this work, your not an American. I watch it often and show it to any young people who've never seen or heard of it.
I was at JFK awaiting (dreading) the 'red eye' back to the UK, when I spotted a 'Western' book in the departure lounge... that book was Lonesome Dove, and I can truthfully say that reading it sped me across the Atlantic at the (almost)speed of light. Twenty years later, I still own that book...and have re-read it many times. I am an admirer of Robert Duvall... he was the perfect choice for the character of 'Gus'! I also love his character in 'Open Range' To quote the 'Duke'... It might not have been the way it was...but it was the way it should have been.
john price , have you read the other books in the series, they are all just as great !!!!!?????
@@TheWaylon1964 what are the other books and have any been made into movies ?
This, by far, is the BEST mini series/movie ever....there will NOT be another one that will EVER rise above it.
What a beautiful movie ! Makes me cry every time.
Me too 😭😭😭
My kids enjoyed it with me. It’s still my favorite. Looking forward to sharing it with my grandsons.
One of the BEST MOVIE you can never grow tired of this great movie
Upon my leaving this earth I have asked my children to play the music of this my favorite movie of all my life.
The last words of my death shall be , Now let the rest of us go on to Montana.
Bob White what a tribute! and well worth it!
One of the very few perfect movies. Perfect cast, script, screenplay.........etc It had NO weak spots.
I have seen it over 10 times and love every single minute.Perfection !
Only ten? I’ve watch it twice a year since it came out on video! Catch up hoss, catch up!
Absolutely the best movie that i have ever seen all the actors were great but my favorites was tommy lee and robert duvall my husband absolutely loves this movie also he says that tommy lee will always be woodrow call or captain call and robert will gus from now on,he loves the way gus cuts the cards.
You know you get once in a lifetime to do it right, and Lonesome Dove was that once in a lifetime.!
Robert Duvall created in Gus McRae what I believe to be the most memorable character in American film, although Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector is a close, close second.
There are only two movies I'm willing to watch at least once every year -- one, of course, is Lonesome Dove and the other is The Wizard of Oz. I wouldn't be surprised if both those magnificent films are still being watched 200 years from now.

ericynot I concur!
I named my son Augustus McCrae
Can't argue with your choice of Robert Duvall but I gotta say that Tommy Lee Jones catches up with him in the last episode. Never saw an actor/actress convey so much personal struggle in a facial expression as him in this movie.
NO ONE cat beat Gus!!!!
One of the greatest movies. Cast was perfect. Wish it would be shown on TV again.
"I hate rude behavior in a man. I won't tolerate it." - (And neither should we.)
Maybe the greatest mini series that was ever made
Have you ever saw Centennial?
I'm so sorry I missed this reunion.
"Lonesome Dove" still brings thrills, chills, and tears when watched .
I just read the 4 Lonesome books. I can't give enough of the book series or tv series.
The best Western ever made...period.
about ten years ago i was bored at home and got this on vidro,i did not know anything about it,now i must have seen it about 15 times and its the greatest cowboy movie of all time,i never get sick of it and watch it about twice each year
eugene o riordan many a weekend spent watching!
Without a doubt- The best thing ever on TV period
My favorite author and the best movie ever made. Tommy Lee Robert Duvall are my favorite actors. It all just happened to come together for me.
BEST Western movie ever made...the book was even better.
Lonesome dove with Robert devall and Tommy Lee Jones in my opinion was the best western I've ever seen, tombstone came a close second and so did butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.
And now it’s 30 years. I’m going to Black Lake, NM, the location that filled in for the Montana ranch headquarters, this weekend. Can’t wait!
Always been a fan of lakes... how was it?
It was a really beautiful lake and it was surreal to know that Lonesome Dove was filmed there.
I would've grabbed me a 5 gallon bucket of dirt from there, just to spread it in my grave, after they lowered me down.
Carvin Lambert Not a bad idea!
Best Western ever made ,reading the book now
ONE OF THE BEST MINISERIES
I watch 4 movies over and over. Singing in the Rain, Lonesome Dove, The Quiet Man and Dances With Wolves.
Westerns will never die They just keep getting better
I God Woodrow, its not dying im talking about...ITS LIVING!!!!!!! Best quote of the movie. Just once in my lifetime, id love the chance to shoot at an educated man. Best quote in book.
In his own words. The god father of westerns.
Greatest western ever. And great actors
lonesome dove has a place in my heart forever :)
MrBuckwilliam mine too. ..
The only other mini series that comes close to Lonesome Dove is Centenial
Best western ever made.
Greatest movie of all time IMO!
Darn I wish I knew about this !! Am a huge fan of Lonesome Dove and live in San Antonio !! God bless America , God bless San Antonio !!!
MJT
spent many weekends re-watching this movie in awe. it's like you were there too!
Tommie Lee Jones did all his own riding, including breaking the Hell Bitch in the first scenes and crashing her into the Army scout that was beating up his son later in the film.
The Best Western that's ever been made, an Award should be molded and handed out for everybody that appeared in it. From that POSSUM eating old man and that ugly girl he kept, to Blue Duck Moon, the most vicious man that's ever walked on dirt. If anybody alive hasn't seen this movie... put it on the Front of YOUR Bucket List immediately..please!!
THE BEST WESTERN EVER MADE!!
Epic movie, and cast.
I finished the book a few days ago. One of the best books I've ever read. I should be getting the mini-series in the mail today. Can't wait to watch it.
la mejor serie de estos tiempos, única en su género, que lastima que ya no la vuelva n a pasar en la televisión.
I am a big big Tommy lee jones fan ...him playing Woodrow call is masterclass well done me jones well. Done
You are correct! Brilliant. Dead-on perfect.
Beautiful film 💖
My #2 all best western movie DUVALL n JONES were great my favorite of all time is JOHN WAYNE n DEAN MARTIN In RIO BRAVO 2 of the best western movies ever made in my opinion
I agree I dont watch many movies, I get bord with them I usually know what uo anout a hour into the movie. This is 8 hrs long and it holds you there.
Excellent.. Casting Robert Duval as Augustus McCrae must be one of the greatest casting decisions ever. When you get a chance, check out the other books. They're all worth reading and are pretty good in their own right. I'm currently on the last one which takes place some 17 years before Lonesome Dove...I think.
The best movie ever, in any classification.
TS THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE.
They left out a great performance by Barry Corbin---best series ever---Robert Duval is scary real as gus
My all-time favorite movies westerns Lonesome Dove Shane The Searchers. NUFF said!
Greatest west series of all time!
"Uva uvam vivendo varia fit" roughly means that "One grape makes another ripen." Hope this helps. "Seize the day" in Latin is "Carpe Diem"
Thanks Shane from 10 yrs. ago! Love learning something new every day! God bless.
The cool thing about the grape quote is how well it reflects the characters in the movie. For good or for bad, they were all forever changed by being around the others.
Best movie EVER!
Them that liked the movie, should read the book! Thanks from.St. Paul Minnesota.
Stunning
@proffromgview absolutely. He is Augustus McCrea.
Absolutely ♥️ this movie and Everything about it 🏇🌲🌵🌄🏞️
Magnificent film ,I thought the love story slowed it down, however great, great film
Bobby/Tommy never better,just pure quality.
Some parts make me ‘ball’
Thanks for a
Even mediocre westerns never die, but, a well done western transcends time! In our mind's eye we go with them on adventures many of our ancestors lived.
I love this movie....
Best. Western. Ever.
Yes I throughly enjoyed it too....
Last and Best!!!!
whyey tomestone too. hopefully not the last...its been a while...
I've heard the dvd release is not up to par. Does anyone know about this ?
If ever there was a film that deserved full restoration and an archival-quality digital release, this is it.
Best movie of all times
My favorite ❤️
I still watch it
This was the BEST mini series, the book was a long read but great
Its true...their is always one that's the # one in its field ...For the western this is the # 1 movie ever made...Best cast...everything about it was # 1...
Very true. Music was #1. Cast #1. Story #1. Production #1. best "book to film" production ever. The movie will make you laugh, cuss, and cry. Really amazing. They will never make another western like it. Not with today's standards in movies. What a great film!
I agree you will never see this quality again...
+Builder99 If I could only keep one DVD, and I could never watch any other show or movie, it would be Lonesome Dove.
Me too...Best of the best...
One thing the narrator gets wrong: the gun Gus carried was a Colt Walker, not a Dragoon. Colt Walkers were specifically designed by Colt for Texas Rangers, which explains why Gus had one. The gun was a collaboration between Samuel Colt and Samuel Walker, Captain of the Texas Rangers.
After Brisco Country JR is the best western serial ever made
The movie was one of the best westerns ever...but honestly NO comparison to the book if you love reading. ALOT was left out of the movie but it's still a fantastic watch.
wish would have been there
Greg Blumhagen yeah!!! without the saddle sores...
It is Living i am talking about Woodrow!!!
Postponed! Well shucks, there is no guarantee we will all be around at a later date to participate. Best of luck to all involved anyway.
Great opportunity to honor a superb cast and screen writer, support a fine collection art, writings, and other archives. If you want to be a part of this party on October 2 & 3 - let me know.
Larry McMurtry's western writing is the all time best. And will undoubtedly remain so.
Tim Scott was wonderful in this. As was Robert Urich. Both have passed away. And Danny Glover was great. Does anyone know what the latin saying on Gus's (Robert Duvall) grave marking was?
Interesting, no mention of Frederic Forrest who played Blue Duck, a character around which a fair share of the story revolved. Kinda short selling an actor who receive both Academy and Golden Globe Award nominations for his work.
I had planned to attend this reunion, but I was told it was cancelled. I suspect for lack of sufficient sponsorship. Too bad, it would have been a hell of a good weekend.
@proffromgview Yeah, the best performance on film ever. THE BEST. My life is better and my heart is bigger, no joke, because I had the good sense to relate to this book and fim. Robert Duvall is a god. ( And Diane Lane, ever since A Little Romance, has my heart - Laurie, Darlin' I reckon. )
@proffromgview couldn't have said it better myself. his gestures are priceless and make Gus come alive
Tricky Ol Gus love this character 💪
It's not a dragoon, it's a Walker. Big difference.
uhhh. Not a lot of difference, actually.
If Eastwood happened to guest star in this film shit would have hit the fan an the movie would have outlast us all
Agree with majority comments.what could out do watching this forever?glad James garner refused Robert Devalls part.
I just finished the book for the first time today....Loved it..Going for the DVD tomorrow.
Best Western EVER
I can fly. An old woman taught me.
"Seize the day".
