- This video is a compilation of memorable lines from Lonesome Dove. Since the film has a pethora of such lines, it wasn't difficult finding good candidates, but it was difficult picking out 10. Sorry if I left one of your favorites out.
I have no rights or ownership to any of the clips used in this video. I just used them to hopefully create an entertaining video. - Фільми й анімація
For those who haven't read the book...Augustus is the funniest character I've ever read in a book. Duval was the perfect man to play him. He did the book justice. 👏 👏 👏
Please Remember This,,,, The BOOK,,, Was Written 18 Years After The "Manuscript and Screen Play " Had Been Written,,, Sold, and Rejected Many Times Over... Way Before The Book Was Written... The So Called "Book",,, Is Just

He made it better in my opinion
First time I can say that about a movie
The book is amazing - it's easily the best western novel I ever read, just as the movie is the best western film (IMHO).
I read the book before the movie came out. The casting for the movie was perfect.
One of my grandfather's statement to teach me was " Best to have it and not need it". It floored me when Capt. Call said the same thing to Newt. Grampa was born in 1880 and passed in 1981. 3 days shy of his birthday, it was the only time I ever saw him going into the house to take a nap in mid afternoon. It was his final sleep.
That sounds like a life for you to celebrate. Bravo to Gramps!
U honor him here.
I have watched this movie once a year for almost 30 years now. My list of top 5 favorite movies change from time to time but Lonesome Dove is always #1.
You my friend have earned super fan status. My #1 favorite as well. Thanks for watching the video Philip.
When we find a Classic, it's Imparitive to Buy the Movie & get a Dose Anytime Our Outlook on life Needs an Adjustment. Those Were the Best of Days. 'An Armed Society is a Polite Society, OR ELSE Pay the Price---!!!'
"It's been quiet a party" is hands down the best line for gus departure. I tear up evertime
Gus was quite a character. How could anyone not like him? McMurtry did a masterful job in creating Gus' character in the book, and the screenwriters did a masterful job in translating that to the screen. Thanks for watching the video Ty,j.Williams.
Ive been tearing up since first watching the end scene.
I'm a 43 yr old self proclaimed "tough guy", but I cry like a little girl every single time gus dies... why have I tortured myself over 2 dozen times?!?! Lol
The book was different
I was 15 years old when Lonesome Dove aired on TV. It had a huge impact on me, and it taught me a great deal. That final scene between Gus and Woodrow was absolutely devastating. Made me cry a little. I'm 47 now but that scene still makes me tear up. Robert Duvall's performance was brilliant, but he was robbed of the Emmy award for it.
Great comment Real McCoy. LD has that type effect on people. Thanks for watching the video.
That scene always leaves me crying but also when Woodrow gets done burying Gus, two scenes I’m definitely crying no matter how many times I’ve watched it. My husband always wants to watch it at least once a year. And I him sniffling as well ❤️
On the contrary my friend, the award was LESS than worthy of the gift The Good Lord gave us thru the BETTER THAN EMMY performance Augustus T. Duvall...or is it Robert S. McCrae. LOL God Bless all those that blessed us with the Dove mini series. So thankful (more so) McMurtry wrote those books!
42 here. We bought a VCR so my dad could record it when it aired on TV. We wore out those recordings. And 2 sets of VHS tapes. And at least one DVD set. When I got the bluray that has been remastered, it was like watching it again for the first time, and because Simon Wincer is a genius sent by God, it was shot in widescreen. Get the BluRay if you don't already have it. Duvall has said publicly that it was his best and favorite role. I don't think a character in any medium has ever been executed with such perfection.
I have a number of westerns I really like a lot. But as far as I am concerned, Lonesome Dove is the best Western ever made.
Thanks for putting this together!!
I totally agree! Thanks for watching Steve.
Absolutely
I lived in Houston when this mini series came out and almost lost a very good job because I refused to work any overtime on the days it ran for fear of not getting home in time to see each episode. I could have found another job but glad I didn't miss a minute of the original airing of this masterpiece.
Masterpiece indeed Michael. Thanks for watching the video.
ME too, it WAS rodeo TIME, i HAD TO WORK THERE EVERY SECOND NIGHT
@@jackhouston357 Yep, I needed the job so I'm glad push didn't come to shove, I think Lonesome Dove would have won out.
“Jake’s always been too leaky a vessel for anyone to put much hope in.” - Augustus McCrae is a line I've used in life when discussing certain people.
A good one for sure Dan.
I use it too. Often about myself.
Right you are!
It's hard to pick only ten lines when (no exaggeration) every other line of dialogue is pure poetry... and you get six hours of it!
Excellent comment lightcaesar. Thanks for watching the video.
I bought a copy of this movie when it was on VHS (a long time ago!!)
It was Christmas Season and I wanted something for me, my husband, and kids to enjoy.
I hadn't seen it yet, and the selling point was the young clerk at Tower Records, in Mohawk and punk piercings who said he and his mom watch it together every year.
He was a respectful, sweet guy who I never would have guessed to be nostalgic about a movie, much less watching it with his mom.
We watched it as a family and loved it.
Not a dry eye in the house when Gus and Woodrow take their leave.
My children are now all in their 30s and we still quote lines now and then.
The Old West was a dangerous, colorful time.
The book and it's sequel are great reads.
Nice story OceanSwimmer. Family memories can never be taken away from us. That's why they are precious. Thanks for watching the video.
@@historymore442 -- We have enjoyed this movie from many perspectives:
-- As a story of the Old West.
-- As a reminder that tragedy in MANY forms happened every day back then (we take our recovery from accidents and illnesses for granted)
-- As a reminder that life was HARD in those days.
-- That there are people in our American past who did the best they could to make a good living: the Cowboys and Cattlemen (my paternal grandfather raised cattle & horses)
--- Only the Strongest survived!
That same grandfather complained of 'a little stomach trouble' which turned out to be a ruptured appendix.
He survived the operation and recovered to live to be 74 or 75.
The youngest of 6 brothers, he was born after his father returned from the Civil War.
One of the most honest western movies of all time. Robert Duval is a class act.
Agree 100% Barry. Thanks for watching the video.
Tommy was very sincere.
Definitely but it wouldn’t be lonesome dove without Woodrow 😊
I love this film more every time I watch it. Best western ever!!
I agree cowboyjim. Thanks for watching.
For me the best western ever made .
I agree William. Thanks for watching the video.
Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall are superb actors they should they should have been in more movies together I don't know why they didn't make him I don't know but they are superb actors in Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece

One of the Best Westerns I've ever seen I love the whole movie the cast was wonderful can't get enough of it a classic for years and years to come I sure like Tommy Lee Jones and Gus
Great Western for sure, best ever I think.
That last scene is tough!! I've always felt sad when an era comes to an end. The end of Woodrow and Gus.
Yep TheOtherMike very poignant. Thanks for watching the video.
Finally--someone has gone on record with one of the best lines in the film. "Augustus," says Woodrow, right before Gus dies. There was so much memory and deep feeling in the drawn out way he said it, as if he had said, "Goodbye to you my dearest friend."
Well said Geoff. Thanks for watching the video.
Woodrow rattling the glass as he poured the whiskey , Class , emotion for his dying friend
The somber tone and near-whisper of that simple drawn out name... Whew. Still gets me.
@@jamesdunne6724 I just caught that. The clinks are so understated but undeniable.
When a movie makes you laugh n cry its a classic......Robert Duval is not capable of a bad performance.....
Thanks for watching the video LaSquishah
as above ... am speechless but only a few words I can muster - RD is Beyond Bloody Brilliant - Always & in All Ways !!!
Woodrow and Gus have the kind of friendship that classics are made of.
A classic for sure Harold. Thanks for watching.
I have a friend that I consider our friendship as that of Gus and Call couldn't find a better man anywhere 🙂
Bar none , this is truly the greatest western ever made. Most people don’t understand it’s about the love, respect and character of the two men. I have literally watched it at least 25 times or more.
You are obviously a super fan like me Woodrow Call (nice handle). Thanks for watching the video.
@@historymore442 Yes sir...
My husband and I watch the series once a year for 20 years, I like the quote by Gus, he’s telling Woodrow u work to much, I feel obligated to to work less… I butchered that quote 😂 but it at the beginning. And also I learned the series started with two movies DEAD MANS WALK, and COMMANCHE MOON! WHEN IT WAS not Robert duval or tommy Lee jones but the characters did a excellent job playing Gus And Woodrow when the were YOUNG before becoming rangers !! Most excellent movies 👍
Excellent choices. Two of Gus's stand out in my mind: "Lorie darlin life in San Francisco is still just life." And after Deet's death: "woodrow I don't even want to start thinking about all we should've done for this good man." That's from memory, so might not be exact.
So many good scenes and lines in LD.
Was one of the best westerns ever made
No doubt Wayne. Thanks for watching.
This was my all time favorite western. One of those you want to keep going, not end.
One of my favorite lines is when Jake Spoon said that his bullet went thru a wall and killed a man outside.
He said a wall wouldn t stop a bullet and Gus said but a dentist will, well nobody likes a dentist anyway, Jake.
Sooo many great lines in Lonesome Dove. It is my favorite as well and I doubt I will see another in my lifetime that will replace it as #1. Thanks for watching Samuel.
The line that gripped me, and the characters in the story, was " Well hell boys, I 'd sooner be hung by my friends than a bunch of damned strangers" Yes, he did indeed "die fine". so sad he couldn't have lived better. As aggravating as Jake could be, Gus was still his friend, "Jake liked to drink, and he didn't like to work. I got those same things myself" Gus is the most lovable character I have ever known, in any movie, book, or TV. Thank you Mr. Duvall!!
Well said Alan. Gus was indeed special. Thanks for watching the video.
Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.
Thanks for watching 27/7.
Yes! This one would be in my top ten!
THE BEST WESTERN
OF ALL TIME!
I agree Carvin.
Lonesome Dove was possibly one of the best mini-series of all time. My brother and I dropped everything to watch it during it’s first run. I have no idea how many times I’ve seen it since then. Also, I’ve read the book three times and I may read one more time demise. Thanks for this great list.
Fantastic book and film Bryan. Thanks for watching the video.
My all time favourite western. Even after all of these years of watching it and reading the book (I may be slightly obcessed), Gus' line of " ay God Woodrow, it's been quite a party" still brings me to tears. Larry McMurtry is imho, one of the greatest writers, screen or otherwise. There's nothing he's written I haven't loved.
What a great script, cast, author....nothing bad about LD. Thanks for watching Daphine.
_“I guess this'll teach me to be careful about what I promise in the future.”_ -- Captain Call, at the end of his journey taking Gus to his final resting place.
Many of the quotes aren't stand-outs as stand alone quotes, this one included ... _but in context,_ they are classic. Thanx so much for the ten you picked, they were excellent!
Very good observation doobie. Thanks for watching.
i dont want to start thinking about all things that we should have done for this great man.
I'm glad to see the line "It's been quite a party, hain't it?" In the list. I was hoping that one would be in the list.
Thanks for watching Chris.
@@historymore442 You're Welcome
The best
Greatest movie of all time! Can’t beat Lonesome Dove
I don't wanna sit here and think about all the things we shoulda done for this good man...I tear up every time I watch the scene when Deets dies!
Poignant scene Erick.
The low breathy way Woodrow pours all his love and respect into simply speaking the name of his friend and comrade when he thinks he is gone... "Au-gus-tussss..."
I cannot keep a dry eye. Every time. Every damned time.
Yes very powerful Garland.
I'm right there with you! I don't even know ho many times I have watched this excellent production.
One of my favorites!
No doubt John.
Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece! It will forever be my favorite movie/series of all time! It's impossible for something of such quality (writing (thanks Larry McMurtry), cinematography, and acting) ever again.
I was blessed to watch the movie & read the books. Still shed a tear sometimes at some of the scenes.
Great book and film.
Great movie ... I cry like a baby when I watch it
Great for sure Darrel. Thanks for watching the video.
Well done on the classic lines.
I still remember watching this on TV the first time. Happened on it by accident the first night, the rest of the week I was in front of the TV come evening, excited for the next chapter.
Robert Duvall has played so many awesome parts in his career but to this day I can't see him without thinking of Capt, Augustus McCrae - Texas Ranger.
I feel the same way about the movie and Robert Duvall TugOwar. Thanks for watching the video.
By far the best western ever made!!!!
My favorite movie of all time.
The line I quote constantly ... is when Woodrow was giving a gun to Newt...
I find the line to fit in most things.
"It's better to have that and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it."
So many great lines in LD. Thanks for watching Phillip.
I even have the soundtrack
The team of Duvall and Jones us unbeatable. Best western ever! Hats off to the late Larry McMurtry for his fantastic story telling.
Only watched Lonesome Dove again last week
Brilliant book , brought to life on the TV
Duval & Jones were outstanding , can't imagine anyone else playing Gus & Woodrow , great casting
Absolutely perfect.
I completely agree with you, but interestingly enough, two other actors almost played Woodrow and Gus. The casting director and McMurtry himself originally wanted Robert Redford to play Woodrow Call and Danny Devito to play Gus McCrae
With all due respect , how could Danny ever be considered for that role , a five foot rootin tootin Texas ranger , nah wouldn't look right
Robert Duval is one of best actors ever , nobody could behave done the part better or even close
I finally did something I have wanted with Lonesome Dove. After all these years I counted the deaths of characters seen on the show. Of course Gus in the end is the best, but there is one line that most people haven't caught. When bringing Sean out of Snake Creek, someone tells Deets, "Watch your horse Danny".
I hadn't caught that Sammy. Good catch and thanks for watching the video.
Damn! I know McMurtry wanted to de-mythologize the cowboy, but he sure did make Gus and Woodrow the most remarkable cowboys in American western literature. RIP Larry McMurtry.
Thanks for watching Cheryl.
I vaguely remember some of the scenes when my dad watched it years ago and remembering how much he liked it. Last year (23 years later) I read the book and hands down it was one of the best books I’ve read. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie once I watched it as well!
Great book and great film Lisa.
My father named me after Augustus. And now that I’ve grown, I can see why he did. He knew what man I would be.
“What’s good for me ain’t necessarily good for the weak minded” Gus McCrae
Great one Bradley. Thanks for viewing.
@@historymore442 , I really enjoyed your video. Lonesome Dove and Tombstone...best Westerns ever.
@@bradleyr34 Open Range right up there
A long-time fan of the book, in fact of anything by Mr McMurtry, but also a fan of accents and yours, sir, is music to these New England ears. Thank you
Made me just about cry, that last scene.
Yep Steve, gut wrenching . Thanks for watching.
One of my favorites: “it ain’t dying I’m talkin about, it’s living!”
That's a good one Mark. Thanks for watching.
IMHO the best line from Gus’ deathbed scene is when he said “it’s about living”. But there are so many great lines in the miniseries, it’s impossible to list them all. I’ve also read the book three times.
LD has great lines all through and through Bryan. Thanks for watching the video.
I want to thank you for introducing me to this book. Have about 200 pages left and my life is richer for the experience.
Best Western of ALL time! Period! 100%!!!
i agree Craig.
Although it has been some time, I have lost count of how many times I have sat and watched this movie.
That makes two of us tiredlawdog. I never get tired of it though. Thanks for watching the video.
My favorite movie of all time. Thanks for making this!
Mine too!
Brilliant, I can’t ever get enough of this masterpiece , well done 👍
Thanks for the kind words Chris, and thanks for watching.
One of the best, if not the best!!!
👍
Absolutely David. Thanks for watching the video.
"Its not dyin' im talking about. Its LIVIN'!"
Woodrow Call summed up in this classic exchange with Claire when he is returning Gus to Texas.
“Did you give that boy your name?”
“I gave him my horse”
“You gave him your horse?”
“I put more value in the animal than I do my name”
So many great lines Raymond. Thanks for watching the video.
That final scene washed my eyes out again. Thanks
The folks that come into this place wouldn’t notice a dead skunk on the table much less a few crumbs
So many good lines Robert. I wish I had included that one. Gus was soooo good. Thanks you for remembering and reminding us.
Wonderful. I'm talkin' about livin', not dyin"
Thanks for watching Donald.
Some things that will naw at a man worse than dying. Best line ever
Good one BuckIsland. Thanks for watching.
Love that quote
I'm watching it right now...it's on the western channel...best western ever
I agree Erick.
Lonesome Dove is the best thing on film ever, better than any movie, television or miniseries.
😭😭😭 "A man who rents pigs is hard to stop." 🤣🤣🤣
my God i cant stop laughing 🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭
I've seen this movie at least a thousand times and I read the book too,and I still tear up every time when Gus is dying. Greatest western of all time! And the only two people that could have played Gus and Call!!!
Good job getting some of the best scenes from a great movie! Maybe one of the top 10 westerns of all-time!
"I hate rude behavior in a man I won't tolerate it" - Woodrow
One of my favorites is when they are about to go into mexico and get the horses but before they leave Woodrow tells Newt that its better off to have this and not need it than to need it and not have it, when he gives him a pistol. Just think that carries a lot of meaning for a lot of things
Yeah Bryan I probably should have put that one in there. Thanks for watching the video.
I stole that line and use it more than any single line I've ever used in my life. It comes naturally to me now... every time I hand out my business cards.
Have used the line many times myself
I'm 34 and love this movie. Grandparent pretty much raised me on it lol. Gus is my favorite of all time. Can I get a poke.😂😂
Now that's some caring grandparents. Helped raise you right. Thanks for watching Pickle.
Damn, I've been off three days, should have got out my DVD"s and watched this. I usually watch it straight through every 4 to 5 years. Although I know every scene it still feels new when watching and I always feel the same way in the last scene, "They Say You're A Man Of Vision".
It never gets old HorizonChaser. Pull out those DVDs. Thanks for watching the video.
Best of the best memorable movie, for those that can appreciate or possibly experienced similar times..!! 2 of my favorite actors..!! Tommy Lee Jones & Robert Duvall..
It ain't dying I'm talking about, it's livin
-Augustus McCrae
They say you're a man of vision , yep hell of a vision .
Great job sir on selecting some fine lines. Now if 100 people selected their top ten, we would most likely have variable choices, but that really isn’t the point is it? Regardless of who’s set of ten we listened to, we would still come away with a smile and a renewed love of Augustus and Capt Call. Well done sir and thank you for taking the time to upload. 😊
Spot on aerocam2. So many great lines. Thanks for watching.
One reason why the series was so good was the casting. Both were perfect for their roles and both turned in Emmy level performances.
I love all 4 movies of the Lonesome Dove series Lonesome Dove is the best of the 4 and Comanche Moon is my second favorite. Gus was such an amazing character
Agree Barry. Woodrow was great too, but Duvall/Gus stole the show. Great actor, great role. Thanks for watching the video.
Excellent!
Tombstone is my #1 western..lonesome dove a close second.
Both great westerns D Mac. Thanks for watching the video.
Great movie and lines. Thank you
You're welcome. Thanks for watching Vernon.
We're like minded. Love this movie and those 10 lines😉🤘💪👊😎😎
Thanks Dale. Great movie and so many good lines.
Great picks, the best western of all times in my opinion .
Although I'm very much a Lonesome Dove fan, the characters and the actors, the lines in the movie, The Outlaw Josey Wales are second to none!!
Gus's last sentence gets to me every time....every time.
It is a fantastic film, Robert Duvall is easily one of my favourite actors. However I would like to see other great films too, I love Westerns but I like other genres too. Hope to see more soon.
That last scene had me teary eyed. The love & respect when death is waiting, is something very special.
Powerful for sure Bill.
My favorite line is , " there's nothing in this world like riding a good horse through new country . " Only a real cowboy can understand that feeling!
Thanks for watching Joel.
Best death scene EVER!!
Thanks for watching sufenta67
Sufenta67 - Yes, but my least favorite scene...hated to see old Gus go...
I love this series as a kid back in the '80s when I watch it I love it last year when I watched it and I loved it a month ago when I watched it.
My favorite film of all time. I too love LD.
Thank You Sir, an excellent presentation
I'm 40 years old this series used to come on once every few years. My parents demanded we watched it. It was only after I was older that I watched it and realized it was a masterpiece.. I also like how the film subtly gives hints about Gus and Woodrow being tough ex Texas Rangers and proves so again and again throughout the movie.. 👍👍👍👍
Cutting the cards is my favorite
Yep The Breeze, sooo classic Gus. Thanks for watching the video.
The Gus passing away scene always brings a tear
words escape me ... speechless & wordless !!!
"Y'in over yer head, Pea."
Good one JoeCWales. Thanks for watching the video.
Awesome western! Great book👍💯
Book and film both great James.
@@historymore442 Yes, read and watched both many times.
A classic series . . . if there ever was one !
Without a doubt Joe. Classic!
Got DVD.. watch it all the time..my favorite western ever!!
Mine too Leigh. thanks for watching the video.
I still watch it twice a year here in 2020
I never get tired of watching it Harry. Thanks for watching the LD videos.
You left out. "Life is a twisting stream." Gus said to July. And when Gus told that old guy, Hugh, up in Montana he was from Lonesome Dove, Hugh said, "you're a traveling SOB, ain't ya" I love that line!
I loved this show!
Fantastic film Gary. Thanks for watching the video.
