  • Shimoda Design bags have finally started to ship and I got mine a few days ago from BH Photo.
This video is my first look at the Shimoda Design Carry On Roller and the Explore 40 Backpack.
Is it the right bag system for me?

Hello Daryll, just thinking about the base of your bag and your concerns re, dirty bottom. If you were to fit velcro on the top and tucked - it upwards and fold it down on the velcro. Maybe a way out of your difficulties. Regards, Allan Davies...

A year later - how did the bottom of the big bag work for you?

    Hi Darryl,
Thanks for the video, but I'm very curious, if you add the medium and a small core unit in the bag, how much room is left at the top of the bag? Maybe you could show this on video?
Of course you have to wait until you receive it....

Hey Darryl, when you adjusted the Shimoda straps from XL to M, do you think that the webbing link at 20:10 you fed that velcro strap through is over time going to be strong enough? To me this seems like a single point of failure for a bag that can cost $400.

Great unboxing, very engaging! Plus i like the fact that you're probably the one man honest about his height 😄 but in terms of the Shimoda's i'm still on the fence, do you reckon an Ursa Mini and a DSLR would fit?

The backpack should fit a Ursa Mini or a Pro DSLR, but not both at the same time.

Quit watching at "I'm reviewing a hiking backpack but don't like the waist straps". Then you probably shouldn't use a hiking backpack, the internal frame and straps are one of the main reasons to even buy this backpack.

I do not like the waist on the Shimoda, I use and have been using F-Stop bags for years. Sadly the Shimoda bags are a few years behind F-Stop bags.

The waist strap is a no go for me as well

I think that this is a new company and most likely will improve the designs from version to version.

Were you able to confirm if the Peak Capture fits on this bag?

How comfortable is the Shimoda for long multi hour hikes with heavy loads of about 25-30lbs?
Most camera backpacks I've seen focus on gear protection/organization first and comfort as an after thought. Don't think I've seen anything that comes near the comfort of something from Osprey or Deuter in terms of backpacking/hiking.

Not had a chance to use the backpack yet, I have loaded it up with gear and it was very comfortable. Its nice you can adjust the shoulder straps

Battlem0nk I have used many Osprey backpacks for long through hikes and multi day trips. Have only used a Deuter once. But, this backpack rivals excellent outdoor backpacks even when loaded to the hilt.

In terms of doctor bags, have you had a look at the Tenba series rollers? They have a much neater design with no overlapping flaps.

    • @DarrylCarey

I found out the other day the Shimoda roller is a Tenba roller, with a few design changes.

Were you able given the time to verify if the Peak Design would attach to the strap, I was thinking about getting a Peak Design Capture Pro, but since you mentioned your Capture One might not fit I'm concerned now
