I should have mentioned this in your last Jak video, but I believe the change in love interests for Jak 3 might have been a result of voice casting issues. For whatever reason, the previous VA of Keira, Anna Garduno, did not reprise her role as Keira in Jak 3 or Jak X. She was replaced by Tara Strong, a common voice actress with literally hundreds of roles. My theory is, given how little Keira speaks in Jak 3, how she is oddly mute when first meeting with Jak while Samos talks his mouth off, that Naughty Dog didn't have a voice actor for Keira. I think Naughty Dog didn't have a voice actor for Keira until near the end of production, which necessitated the change in love interests. Remember, they only had a year to pump out Jak 3, there wasn't much time to recast Keira at all. It's possible Naughty Dog were afraid they wouldn't find a good new VA for Keira, or perhaps the former actress was stuck in pricing negotiation for a while before backing out. Regardless, Keira is too mute and too small of a figure in Jak 3 for me to believe it was all intentional. Hearing you have the same complaints about Jak's worldbuilding, lore and storydevelopment feels validating. Like I didn't waste my time being annoyed about the same things. I really wish we could get a developer-interview explaining what happened, especially with all the weird stuff in Jak 3.
It definitely is strange, and a little sad really. I think at the time we all wanted to see a more well-meshed story behind the universe and the characters, as much as we enjoyed the substance as it was. There is so much potential in it, but I suppose being that Jak 1 was such a mish-mash the developers didn't leave themselves a foundation for something so seamless and ran with the idea of something not so solid altogether.
There is actually tons of backstory behind basically everything in Jak 3, problem is in the actual game certain things only get mentioned or hinted at, but it's all on the J&D wiki, and the game becomes more enjoyable when you know everything from sources outside the game itself. There's also lots of stuff that went unmentioned in Jak 2 (though this is more cool than frustrating) where certain things you do during the game you'll be just as oblivious as Jak himself is even after you beat the game, and you'll never realize until you go *really* in depth. For example, Jak 3 has Jak being banished because the people think his friendship with Krew helped the Metal Heads invade Haven, and while Jak is portrayed as being in the right because we're left as oblivious as he is, that's exactly what he did. Take the mission where you destroy the defense turrets in the sewers, they were there for keeping Metal Heads out, and Krew had Jak doing his dirty work without Jak knowing.
1st. Jak X is amazing, so much chaos, destruction, and high speeds, glorious. Its a shame there aren't more games like this. Also love how when you were talking about choosign another mission to beat because of one that gives you trouble the sewers are in the background. Those levels were a nightmare.
The sewer levels. The bane of my existence. My play style usually focuses on speed, and the sewer levels just *do not* like that. I end up being too fast for the track *and* within sights of the contestants that are usually far away behind me. Hate it so much
Yeah the one time he drove good in my playthrough was when he beat me. Like sure, I get it UR-86. You're either a pain in the ass or no pain at all, huh??
@@Kingdom850 "Arguably" They almost always shoot first. Ironically it was the most supposedly serious Uncharted game that had Nate killing people for no good reason and the narrative not seeming to notice.
I personally can't blame Jak for leaving Krew to die... that guy sold out Haven City to Kor, leaving everyone at the mercy of metalheads, not to mention dangerous weapon he built for baron. He was too dangerous to be left alive... hell, he was dangerous even after his death, he managed to harm Jak and his friends even beyond the grave. And also, it's not as if Jak had an option to save him. The entire place was about to blow up, and Jak and Daxter managed to narrowly evade death by jumping. There was no time to drag an irredeemable bastard (who also weighs a ton) out of harms way.
The handling goes to shit the faster you go, and you already slide like a lubed up penguin, but the infuriating explosions add to the satisfaction of beating those hard turns with the gold medal
I always thought the reason why we never heard of Kras was because under Praxis and Veger had an incentive to information about other possible places to live for population control
Anytime I was in the lead I always held on to a red item and dropped it for the next pickup until I managed to roll for the Dark Evo shield, having that on always guaranteed invul for the PeaceMaker.
Yup. That's a good tactic. I do that too, but mostly when I'm close to the end of the last lap. Dying in the first lap is fine. Dying when you're almost to the finish line is hell
The PS4 port isn’t good just so you know. Performance issues (slow motion, dropped frames) are rampant, especially during split screen. And there isn’t even online multiplayer.
I didn't have any slowdown issues, though i didn't use split screen. It's a shame that there's no online, but overall i think its the better version since it fixes the bad bugs and comes with (almost) all the extra content.
"And there isn´t EVEN online multiplayer", it´s a PS2 game, mainly single-player, are you mad?? What´s with some people who need online in everything? Craziness?
I like the end speech about the characters of the series (Also after the last jak video got me to play the trilogy, I can say jak 3 is prob my fav followed by 1 sorry 2)
It's nice to see this series get some appreciation once in a while. These were my favourite games growing up, right alongside Ratchet & Clank. Excellent analysis! Thank you for this nostalgic trip down memory lane!
I loved Jak X to pieces back when I played it. Flaming, jagged pieces. It got pretty difficult later on in the story, though, more difficult than I've experienced with other racers. Tight turns in a few of the later tracks force you to really up your game and the more strategic item system means you can't just keep beating your head against the wall until RNJesus wins the race for you. It's intense. I should play it again sometime soon.
Jak X is one my favorite games ever! I love it's edgy style, the music, and especially the super nuanced controls. The Eco system is also amazing! And I forgot about that last line, on account of my game often glitching before I could finish.
That Queens of the Stone Age intro is one of the fuckin best intro cutscenes. Both Insomniac and Naughty Dog went full *edge* with their 4th entries, pumped up the action level and didn't take it too seriously which ended making the games pretty great even if people weren't ready to accept them as quality entries right away. I'll never forget reading about Deadlocked in Game Informer and then the cool October day in the 3rd grade when my dad got the game for me, absolutely unforgettable along with the time I got Jak X for Christmas.
Jack X is the Deadlocked of the J&D franchise. A spin off deviating heavily from the original formula, but still made by the same guys and turned out to be fun as hell. On the bad spin off side, I think you could also consider Lost Frontier to be the Size Matters of the J&D franchise. Funny thing is LF and SM are developed by the same company.
For anyone interested in playing the game on a PS2 Slim there is actually a workaround to the save glitch I used to do when I played as a child. If you unplug the memory card while at the main menu it’ll disable autosave. You can plug it back in and save any time you’d like without having to worry about the game breaking and becoming cursed.
If targeted with a peacemaker, slam breaks and allow runner up to pass you. A driver who can maintain first place with competition shortly behind is true mastery of the game.
I just must mention how nicely done they portrayed Jak's hair and facial hair, and how it signifies him getting older. In the beginning he had the same kind of hair you'd expect from someone looking like him being that age. In the second game he has longer, more untamed hair as well as sporting a goatee, showing him physically growing older. In the third game he has shorter hair, around the same length as in the first (I think), has styled his goatee slightly differently AND also grew sideburns. And then in this game he has the shortest hair his ever had, yet again has a slightly different styled goatee and he retains his sideburns more or less like they were in three. The reason why I think this is genius is because I feel like it generally reflects real life (at least as it is for some people): When you're a teenager (13-16 perhaps) you might have about half-long hair and no facial hair. Then as you enter your later teen years (17-19) you start growing some kind of facial hair and saves out your hair. Then you enter your early twenties (say 20-24) and you save out some more facial hair but go back to a shorter hair like when you were younger. And then finally when you enter your mid-to late twenties (25-29) you keep that sweet facial hair, perhaps style it differently and get shorter hair, even shorter than your teen years. I dunno, this is just what I feel like is at least a somewhat accurate take on real life growth in terms of looks when growing older.
1- It was shorter 2- It actually goes like this: Jak 1: He has long hair styled after the trends of the time Jak 2: After years in prison, his hair grows too long and he starts growing facial hair. Mostly his goatee and some sideburns. It's not a style, his goatee is overgrown. Jak 3: After finally taking a chance to cool down and have a shave, he cuts his hair into his original style, though shorter, presumably to grow into it. Also he trims his goatee, though he doesn't remove it entirely. (His facial hair also starts growing more) Jak X: He cuts his hair short, stops bothering trying to style it in a way that's been out of fashion for centuries, going for a more modern look. His facial hair growing even more, with his sideburns growing longer. And if you look at the concept art, it's clear that the intention was for Jak to grow a beard similar to Mar's (As in, no mustache) and eventually start tying his longer hair. They were really debating it.
17:08 I LOVE this part specifically. In an instant it repaints the scene with the viewers in Mizo's place and Jak as the developers, making the situation clear the moment it starts. Comedy genius.
The autosave glitch can be avoided by pulling out your memory card after a load, and then putting it back in and doing a manual save before you close down. And yes this game was really amazing. As you said, they really nailed the speed aspect of the game and the choices you have to do while driving on how to max out your speed. Great soundtracks and gameplay. It really kickstarted my love for Queens of The Stoneage. It's too bad it didn't get a lot of attention.
Every odd Christmas or so, I boot up my dusty PlayStation 2 and go nuts with Jak X! So many fantastic memories of my Dad and myself playing split-screen in Mar’s coliseum trying to blow each-other up; reminds me so much of the Holiday period. Also with my friends coming over after school and one of them bringing his memory card of Ratchet Gladiator so we could use Ratchet as a playable character. So many fond memories, we’ll never get this period of gaming again. The PS2 era was really the golden age!
Also i would like to add that in the plot it makes sense as to why Jak is a good racer, so it kind of feels natural that we would eventually get a Jak racing game.
Respect, you bring up facts about games no one else would otherwise talk about. Also you played this for 8 hours in one sitting? You're incredible man!
Jak does have character growth throughout the series (Though it's more a collection of notes honestly) Jak started off as a do gooder, got corrupted till he was filled with a dark presence, struggled to be the hero he was always meant to be, failed at times, succeeded at other times, then eventually just... Accepted that he isn't the hero he was half a decade ago. It's a valid direction to take Jak in. (Though, again, it would've helped to double down on it)
Jak X is the most underrated game I’ve ever played. Its way different than the last 3 games but thats what makes it memorable I think. Its like a mix of burnout and mario kart but darker and actually has a decent story.
You know this is a badass game when the opening cinematic has not one, but TWO Queens of the Stone Age songs. Plus, the in-game music is done by Billy Howerdel from A Perfect Circle! Dude’s crazy good! A badass soundtrack to go with a badass game. Hell yeah!
I skipped Jak X because I was kinda like “Wait I don’t want this from my Jak series” (I was salty before I even knew what salty was ) I kind of regret it now not even giving it a chance ... The first 3 games are probably my favorite trilogy of all time ...

Take the mission where you destroy the defense turrets in the sewers, they were there for keeping Metal Heads out, and Krew had Jak doing his dirty work without Jak knowing.
the thanks for joining the team running gag has to be my absolute favorite
I need that "you get used to it" one liner in isolation. that's great.
7:44 Ahhhh, I get the visual gag. “-getting torn to shreds.” while showing footage of Torn shredding Jak, nice.
Hate it so much
New game: Take a shot every time the video cuts to Mizo exploding.

British people are hard to please.
I loved that game just as much as all the others, it was an excellent expansion to the story
Jaks "you get used to it" is possibly the most badass line I've heard in a game
For real, if by 2025 we don't already have a Jak X successor I'll just start making it myself.
A The last lesbian kart racer is more likely than anything in the Jak franchise at this point,so you might as well start putting that studio together.

I love you. You have no idea how long I've waited to hear my feelings about this game echoed and validated.
I remember when UR-86 is introduced they go on about how amazing he is. That introductory Grand Prix on my latest playthrough he came in LAST PLACE.
Guess he drives like an 86 year old.
Yeah the one time he drove good in my playthrough was when he beat me. Like sure, I get it UR-86. You're either a pain in the ass or no pain at all, huh??

It's all fun and games until your friend in last place gets the supernova.
You can cancel these in multiplayer.
So your friend can't have a supernova if you dont allow it
@@lefterismplanas4977 Screw that, I use to make the supernova the only item

The comedic timing in this video specifically is insanely good, every time I come back to it
Just reading the title gave me nostalgia of when I played this game over 10 years ago.
_Brings a tear to my eye._
@@coolmedina117 Ditto that because I remember the boost flames being in the wrong position. Still didn't fix the studdering and audio issues.
"no online multi-player"

Maybe that's a good thing in retrospect...
"And there isn´t EVEN online multiplayer", it´s a PS2 game, mainly single-player, are you mad?? What´s with some people who need online in everything? Craziness?

Hahaha the 2016 Ratchet & Clank reference
This game and F Zero GX are on an entirely different level compared to other racing games
The first thing I did was scroll down to the comments to see where the DMC reference was.

It's nice to see this series get some appreciation once in a while. These were my favourite games growing up, right alongside Ratchet & Clank. Excellent analysis! Thank you for this nostalgic trip down memory lane!
I love how almost every video talking about the game, theres at least ONE jab at Edje.
Another well done video, man! This was awesome. Also, I nearly spit my food out on “THANKS FOR JOINING THE TEAM, KEIRA!”
Jak X is legitimately my favorite racer
Awww yeah, she’s got her independence now.
THANKS FOR JOING THE TEAM KEIRA.

JakX was epic gamer moments. Many pvp memories with friends.
You should make a Sly Cooper Trilogy video!
1- It was shorter
2- It actually goes like this:
Jak 1: He has long hair styled after the trends of the time
Jak 2: After years in prison, his hair grows too long and he starts growing facial hair.
(His facial hair also starts growing more)
Jak X: He cuts his hair short, stops bothering trying to style it in a way that's been out of fashion for centuries, going for a more modern look. His facial hair growing even more, with his sideburns growing longer.
And if you look at the concept art, it's clear that the intention was for Jak to grow a beard similar to Mar's (As in, no mustache) and eventually start tying his longer hair. They were really debating it.
This game is single handedly the reason why I have music taste. I’m so glad you talked about the soundtrack.
I was never into racing games but I personally had fun with this game. The soundtracks are fire too.
17:08 I LOVE this part specifically. In an instant it repaints the scene with the viewers in Mizo's place and Jak as the developers, making the situation clear the moment it starts. Comedy genius.
If you look up "Battlefield: Bad Company 2 TV Spot Trailer," you might find evidence of some plager...uh...I mean...inspiration...from EA.
Naughty Dog: Still waiting for Jak 4?

The jump cut was pretty funny.
Respect, you bring up facts about games no one else would otherwise talk about. Also you played this for 8 hours in one sitting? You're incredible man!
Jak does have character growth throughout the series (Though it's more a collection of notes honestly)
Jak started off as a do gooder, got corrupted till he was filled with a dark presence, struggled to be the hero he was always meant to be, failed at times, succeeded at other times, then eventually just... Accepted that he isn't the hero he was half a decade ago. It's a valid direction to take Jak in. (Though, again, it would've helped to double down on it)
This has gotta be my favourite UA-cam channel. Keep up the great work, Charlie.
I hope a Kingdom Hearts retrospective series happens eventually tho.
Gotta love that tv man "what does crew have on you guys?" Like damn man
I got it in PS4, and I still play it!! So many memories with this game, I FCKNG LOVE IT!❤❤
I cant believe this game had queens of the stone age music, cant get any more badass than that.
Jak X is the most underrated game I’ve ever played. Its way different than the last 3 games but thats what makes it memorable I think. Its like a mix of burnout and mario kart but darker and actually has a decent story.
Diddy Kong Racing comes to mind when you're discussing the item differences between this game and Mario Kart.
You know this is a badass game when the opening cinematic has not one, but TWO Queens of the Stone Age songs. Plus, the in-game music is done by Billy Howerdel from A Perfect Circle! Dude’s crazy good! A badass soundtrack to go with a badass game. Hell yeah!
I skipped Jak X because I was kinda like
