Derek is a genius and a DEREK at the same time
Hey DG
Thanks for watching, Dan! - Alex
DEREK!!
Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are some of my favorite games ever. It's awesome to see such a grounded, humanizing interview with the dev. Lovely atmosphere & visuals too
Thanks for watching.
I think Spelunky is the tightest and most cohesively designed game I've played, where everything does what it needs to to contribute to the overall game, and so I am one of those people who calls it perfect, or about as close as we've got.
The Spelunky documentary is great and all, but the real question still remains: Where’s UFO 50???
We asked him that too on the way home.
@@gameinformer And???? ;)
I've watched this a few times but there's one question I still have. How the hell can one man be so precious?
The production of this was insane. Very inspiring to watch and hear from Derek. Not a really big Spelunky fan but played it a couple times on the ps4. As a musician (and video game lover), I love hearing other artists talk about their art. Really really appreciate Game Informer for creating this!
Thanks for watching!
I first found Derek’s work through Spelunky 2, and it quickly became one of my favorite games of all time. It’s great to hear from the developer’s point of view!
4:42 You hear an incessant buzzing...
This is seriously so cool. GameInformer recently has been creating some of the most well-produced and interesting stories in the industry, while also clearly having lots of fun. I really appreciate hearing Derek’s perspective on creating art; well done Derek and the folks at GI!
Thanks Eric :)
thanks, I love this! Derek has been a hero since the Tigsource days
This was a great documentary! I've never played Spelunky, only heard others talk about it, but this makes me want to pick it up immediately.
Thank you Kelsey!
Hello this content was made for me! Thanks for making it. Enjoyed immensely.
I just graduated and have been looking for a change in direction in my career. I have been looking into game development for awhile and have been proactive about learning as much as I can so I can eventually make a game of my own. Spelunky holds a special place in my heart and I look up to Derek Yu. I hope that one day I create something as special as Spelunky
I think he is a healthy person to look up to. His work / the way he tackles the concepts in his head is incredibly inspirational as well. I hope I get to play your game one day!
Derek doing research for the cave pigeon update I see
Great stuff, well done. I've been enjoying the doc work GI's been experimenting with. And it helps that this one is about some of my favorite games.
Derek's Spelunky book from Boss Fight Books is well worth reading, too.
Great to hear!
These documentaries are great; please keep making them!
I’ll do what I can! - Alex
Derek is not only an amazing developer, but I’d love to just be friends with him
Game informer makes some of the most high quality game docs out there man
Thanks Roberto 🙏🏻
Fantastic work, really cool to get some insight into Derek's development philosophy
Thank you!
Why does this have no views? Spelunkey 2 is one of the GOATS
Shout out to the UA-cam algorithm lol
very cool video! also, derek is just awesome...definitely one of the pioneers of the whole indie gaming industry for me
Thanks for the nice comment. Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video! Derek Yu is a tremendous inspiration and I love the style of the video. Wonderful!
Thank you!
Best Game Ever, especially Spelunky 2 :p thx Derek !
Absolutely wonderfully produced. Flaws be damned, Spelunky 1 and 2 are perfect games to me and Derek Yu seems like such a chill, humble dude.
(And for however long the development takes, I'm hyped as hell for UFO 50 whenever that comes out)
Thanks for watching!
That was lovely.
Thank you!
Loved this
GI continues to make some of the best video features in the industry :)
Thanks Luis! :)
Praise Derek!
Com Deus nada é impossível, sei que através da música darei o melhor pra minha família 🙏🏻❤️
Wonderful video!
Thanks Evan!
What is that soundtrack? Really nice!
Answered in another comment :)
Good stuff. Derek seems pretty chill, despite? because of? his success. Who did the music?
We sourced them from Epidemic Sound. Tracks are Too Dusty by Blood Red Sun, Hard Wired by Martin Hall, and Downstreams by Roots And Recognition (in order of their appearance).

I'm still waiting for UFO 50, personally. I think that project is more attractive than Spelunky, to me.
I’m real excited for UFO 50! - Alex
15:20 is what I love about spelunky
Derek Yu is my celebrity crush
If ONE game in UFO 50 is half as good as Spelunky, it will be worth it.
Agreed
Does Game Informer have other documentary?

Shoutout Sean Ranklin
That’s a great CGI bird.
We spent our yearly budget on it
@@gameinformer 😅
Absolutely incredible work
Thank you!
Can somebody tell Derek make Aquaria 2? 😢😢
Yo where’s the Kali alter?
next you should talk with edmund mcmillen in a putrid shit filled basement
hahahaha
Wait, when was this filmed?
Late April of last year. We had a reduction in our team size and as a result put special projects on hold for a while. But we’re happy to finally publish this!
I wonder what Derek considers to be spelunky and spelunky 2’s greatest flaws
what IS that
first
you can't keep getting away with this
I don't like to be negative, but I just feel weird about this video. There's barely 5 or 10 minutes of interview, but with a lot of beautiful shots and misc non-interview talking about the hike and environment. It just seems like it's not really a documentary and even barely an interview, there's almost no meat to this.
Thanks for the feedback.
I just love playin spelunky on the switch the game is so fun to play i already beat spelunky 1 and 2 and i hope spelunky 3 comes out for the switch if it does imma buy that game 😃
