I've been working on the same game since 5/24/2020 by myself pretty much, and hearing you say that UFO50 and Splunky2 together helped you realize them makes me feel better. Like.. I'm going to take on a smaller, (in fact pico8 game) where the scope isn't something I can just run away with for forever, And I think that'll help me not get totally burnt out or get new ideas. Thanks Derek. I love your work and hearing you talk. Kinda like a idol to look up to in some aspects though I'm sure your human. Love from oregon.
I worked on my own game for nearly 2 years before finally abandoning the project entirely. It broke my heart a little bit. I haven't taken on another project since :(
I may not be a huge fan of the Spelunky series, but I do really respect Derek as a game designer and he's very eloquent when it comes to explaining what he likes and what inspires him to make the games he does. Clearly it resonated with a lot of people, good for him!
I love the transparency we've always gotten from Derek and Blitworkz since release, So much love and time and blood and sweat was poured into this magnificent product. Spelunky means alot to me, it's been a huge part of my life since 2016, and I plan to continue to play not only Spelunky, HD and 2- but anything else Derek and Blitworkz release in the future. You're all such an inspiration and I could only dream of maybe working with you some day. Great talk, man.
Thank's for sharing Derek! Amazing game, you've brought so much joy (and frustration) to me and my 10 year old son. After playing the game +200 times he just found the multiplayer online mode - and he's hooked again 😅 Splunk 3 or not - thanks for all the fun and good luck on your next venture!
What a great interview, Derek is so damn insightful and willing to share what he's learnt.. gotta love it. Also the fact that Andy came up with the back layers idea is huge! That adds so much depth to the game and it came from someone not even actively working on it.
In my very controversial opinion: Spelunky might be an even more important rogue like than rogue - because it showed how the same fundamentals of perma death and random generation could transcend it's initial genre.
There are definitely enough roguelikes at this point that there are a few touchstones of the genre that surpass their genre's namesake in importance, at least imo. Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, FTL, Slay the Spire, just to name a few.
Spelunky is the 1st Rougelike I played and it was life changingly awesome. I want to see a rougelike for a Fallout/Wasteland type of game, an xcom type of game, and a half-life type of game. It would be difficult to blend CPU-generated levels with any of the aforementioned titles but what i love about rougelikes is the randomness with a set of world rules and being forced to finish the game in 1 run without saves so as long as a fallout-style game is made to be finished in 1 go (short story/main objective) i imagine it’s possible to make it and other games a rougelike.

amazing talk, I fell in love with spelunky hd and I'm just now starting to get good at spelunky 2. If there will be a spelunky 3 we will all be very happy. BUT you made such an amazing game that we are also happy with what we got :)
Nobody encapsulates what makes this game so great like seeing Northernlion, Malf, BaerTaffy, and Dan Gheesling all play it in different ways, and still all of them had an absolute ball. DEREK!!!!
based on the trend of Spelunky 1, then Spelunky 2, Spelunky 3 will come out 6 months early for PlayStation, and every time you press a button it'll apply electricity directly to your balls
Spelunky one was a great game I'm sure Spelunky 2 will also be a great game thank you to the game devs thank you for the hardware thank you for everything you do

I feel like the authenticity of this talk was diminished a bit by the dev's need to make sure everyone knew he started the roguelike genre. He calls attention to it at least 3 times in the first 10 minutes.
With his innocent face and calm way of speaking, you'd have no idea that Derek is one of the most sadistic minds of our time.
Great talk. Derek is an incredible game designer.
Thank you
Spelunky HD and now Spelunky 2 are two of the best games I've ever played. Genius
Derek Yu is greatest. I always enjoy his game-crafting wisdom. And even his Spelunky book was a great read-highly recommended!

The Spelunky series is great...and STILL very underrated in my opinion.
This was truly excellent! I appreciated the very honest and open approach to your communication.
Thanks so much for being generous with your time, Derek!!

He’s so humble, made it a really great talk
The "spicy food" analogy is perfect... kinda confuses me why you don't just call "spiky" games "spicy" games haha
Spicy in the book community can also mean having sexual content.

Splunk 3 or not - thanks for all the fun and good luck on your next venture!
This man is a legend!
Also hearing him shout out brogue made me very happy, that’s the only ‘classic’ style rogue like I ever managed to win
spiky and soft is an excellent distillation of these concepts. thank you for the great talk!

In my very controversial opinion: Spelunky might be an even more important rogue like than rogue - because it showed how the same fundamentals of perma death and random generation could transcend it's initial genre.
Technically that means Spelunky is the most important roguelike, because Rogue is not a rogue-like LOL it's the original
There are definitely enough roguelikes at this point that there are a few touchstones of the genre that surpass their genre's namesake in importance, at least imo. Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, FTL, Slay the Spire, just to name a few.

The spicy food analogy is really good.
Love this! so much good information for developers new and older
I wish we could have seen the more cartoony style of early Spelunky 2 he was planning to use. Simply to see the evolution
Best dude. Probably my biggest inspiration in developing my own (not a rogue like, but quite spiky)

Always a pleasure having Derek share some wisdom

So true man. After playing Returnal every game now I look at games differently. I'm making a game too that has lite elements of death and restart.
We finally get our lord explaining spelunky 2 and how he's known as a sadist :)
So hyped to watch this ahhh

He did mention "More Spelunky 2 work" DLC?!?!
So did u get the idea from splunker for the nes?
If u did u took a great twist on it
Derek, I hate to ask, but it’s a tradition twenty-plus years old now: when _is_ Trigger Happy 2 coming out?

I'm interested in that talk too. Maybe not uploaded yet?
