  • Our Fifth Estate/Enquête investigation has found Canadian recycling companies are breaking the law by shipping illegal, unsorted household trash - hidden among approved recycling exports - to developing countries. But the federal government is keeping the list of names of those caught violating environmental and international laws secret from the public. In the last five years, at least 123 shipping containers have been returned to Canada for carrying unrecyclable trash.

This is so embarrassing. Sorry, Nina, it's so not what I want as a Canadian. I'm disgusted with my government and the laws that protect the identity of the companies who are doing this. I live near Calgary and I wonder why I even bother recycling my garbage if some of it can end up in Indonesia or India. It's so frustrating, the world we live in now. I used to run a small garbage hauling company in Calgary and I seen what happened to much of the "recycling". Let's just say I don't participate in the blue bin programs 🤔
I later sold my business when it started to grow too fast and I didn't feel like hauling garbage anymore. I now do a lot of secondhand sales and repair/clean/paint quality items for reuse to divert them from landfills and junk yards.

From a production perspective, its a miracle material. Very easy to form, cheap, robust, sterile, doesn't decay, infinite shelf life. The same things that make it great are also the things that make it an environmental disaster. Even if we found a similar material, it would likely have the same negative impacts on the environment. Been doing a deep dive into this issue the last couple of weeks. Have reused, repurposed & recycled all of my life. We buy as little in plastic as possible.
On March 30th, the recycling association announced we could NO LONGER RECYCLE ANY PLASTICS.....because there was no market for selling it. An entire community has been told to just throw all the plastic in the garbage from now on!! 🤢 This just makes me ill!!
So we are researching how we can start a grass roots organization, starting at a household level, to deal with the issue. We have found a couple of small solutions for #2-#5 plastics, but PET/PETE #1 plastics seem to have no recycling application outside of commercial fabric use and make up a significant portion of local plastics.
We will start encouraging people to avoid #1 plastics as much as possible, start a lobby campaign aimed at manufacturers (we are joining with several other communities in the same boat) and seek local solutions to local problems....
    Not a short-term project!!

So sad. Thank you for this excellent video. We all need to be more careful with how much waste we generate. I did not know our waste is continuing to be dumped in other countries....and has been going on for some time. I am so sorry for Canada's role in this. We all, as individuals need to do our part...including being aware of how our decisions and actions contribute. As far as the broad stroke decisions.. It is probably going to come down to 'follow the money...and who has all the power with it'....including the reason why there is lack of transparency and political action.

The solution is simple. Use the company logo on the waste product and sue the product mfr for damages. If the laws in your country do not allow for this, change the law. A fine of $100 per gram of identifiable waste exported into a country that does not already offer that product at retail would be a great start. Those companies being hit with these fines from International victims would go after the recyclers and crush them. I can see how US law might protect some companies because of a lack of Nexus, But perhaps the laws could be enforced through the International court of human rights. If this could be done non biodegradable packaging would disappear in 3 years. Or at least companies would leave their logo off the product.

There were documentaries before and around the time when China banned unsorted and unrecyclable waste to be imported. Since then for all those years, it is sad to see that instead of processing them properly for 3rd-party vendors or recycling garbage locally and the black sheeps in recycling business simply find other dumping grounds with loop holes. It is lucrative business; those companies do not only charge local residents and organizations for recycling fees but also sell the waste overseas for considerable amount, easy money from both ends.

The reason this happens is .. the recycling plants in Ontario over work their systems, underpaid staff can't sort it properly and a lot of garbage gets missed.
Also the public needs to stop throwing non recyclable material into their bins

The lack of transparence on fines from a government agency is absolutely abhorrent

Increase the fines & expose under law who is responsible. Disgraceful sending garbage over seas should not be allowed. The companies should be providing the correct packaging that is highly recyclable.

Wow, 9000 dollars in fines that probably covered the price of having one of the 123 containers shipped back to Canada and taxpayers paying the rest and all those containers still ending up in our landfills.
