  • Plastic Promises: Coca Cola's Recycling Lies | ENDEVR Documentary
Watch 'The Rise of the Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else' here: • The Rise of the Global...
Every second, another ten tons of plastic is produced. 10% of all plastic produced ends up in the oceans, leading to predictions that, by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. Faced with this global scourge, more and more businesses are promising to recycle, including the Coca-Cola Company, a group that sells 4000 plastic bottles around the world every second.
Can we depend on the promises made by these multinationals? And is recycling the solution? We investigated the company’s pledges and discovered that their promises are as sugar-filled as their products.

Many of you will know this documentary nevertheless many will not have seen it yet. A repeat viewing won’t hurt either as we still
are eons away from solving the problem. My question: do you still buy water in a plastic bottle? If you live in Flint MI (and similar) obviously you’re exempt. But everyone else? I’m watching you

I remember paper bags and glass bottles. They were fine. I don’t remember being too weak to lift a glass bottle, even as a young child. Who are these consumers that are allegedly demanding plastic bottles because they are more portable? Seems legit…

@@migoreng7789 In the documentary the corporate executives suggest that consumers wanted the plastic. I was around during the transition and all I remember is people complaining about the change. People knew it was bad then, and they still know. I don’t doubt it is cheaper and more convenient, but at the time of the transition it was companies driving the change, not consumers asking for it.

I think the main change and the one they would be talking about internally at the Coca-Cola company is the introduction of 2 litres bottles. In the eyes of many it was more convenient, one item carried comfortably and you share it with many, turns out many people were buying them just for themselves. The price structure made it attractive, aggresively targeting those who wanted a bit more than 1 L, so even if a bit went to waste they still got a better deal than buying 2 of the smaller bottles.

Salt in paper bags, milk in a glass container, using a aluminum water bottle that I refill as needed... I make my own flavored drinks at home and loving it!!

The issue here is that it isn’t just about packaging and the failure of consumers to dispose of waste responsibly. It’s the fact that consumers are addicted to sugar. There wouldn’t be an industry if consumers were consuming so much sugar. Sure, there’s bottled water. Can the producer be criticized for producing plastic bottles? It’s cheaper to produce. It’s cheaper to transport because they don’t break when dropped. They’re lighter weight. Which means reduced fuel costs to transport. More product makes it to the consumer for less. The failed attempts to have a circular market are because of the costs. Would the company see a return on their investment by transitioning to zero waste? No, consumers are going to consume whether the company goes zero waste or not. The only thing that would compel the company to change is a mass boycott directly due to consumers’ displeasure with the waste. It undermines their profit.

This documentary shows that using glass bottles was effective with recycling efforts. . . . maybe there's less effort put into marketing recycling of plastic bottles, because the recycling process is an expense the company would rather do without.
This documentary shows the company has not reached half of their low targets for recycling; they've resisted things that could help for many years. Clearly companies have much to do.

    • @agentp6621
      @agentp6621 2 роки тому +1

People are lazy. Path of least effort will be the path most taken. Consumers will choose to dispose of waste irresponsibly when given the choice. It isn’t all about the “evil” corporation. The consumer has a responsibility as well. The corporation isn’t going to make a change unless the consumer doesn’t demand the change.

Sad but not surprising, the only reason Coca Cola is seriously looking at it now is because the environment has become a bigger issue and it makes them look bad. We should all reduce the amount of products we buy with plastic and single use packaging if we can, because recycling still has a significant environmental impact.

One of the most expensive parts of delivering a bottled beverage to the consumer is the shipping. Shipping a glass bottle is a lot more expensive than shipping a plastic one. If Coca Cola switches from plastic bottles to glass bottles, they cannot maintain a competitive edge against their competitors who still ship their products in plastic. Coca Cola also has to answer to their shareholders who would not be happy with the change to glass. Coca Cola's share price would take a massive hit, and maybe never fully recover.
You have to remember that we live in a profit system and Coca Cola is a company. The whole point of a company is profit. This goes for all companies not just Coca Cola. Companies do what they need to do to be competitive and profitable. If there is something that that company is not allowed to do, or is required to do, you may need to lay the requirements out clearly into law (such as requiring bottles made of glass). Expect that companies will select the most profitable product to make first, within the boundaries of the law, before later tacking on additional systems to minimize waste. Being socially responsible to our planet is sometimes the opposite of what is profitable but our system rewards profit.

Do your homework. Find out by yourself what recycling really means. YOU think you recycle but, yoir city, county, state simply bury your "recycled" items or, in worse cases, it ships it to 3rd world countries flr a fee. Simply put, recycling in the US means "sweeping the dust under the carpet".

47:04 'Because of the consumer...' Unbelievable. Trying to shift the blame onto the people, when they can only be influenced by the producer. If they only sell Coke in glass bottles, then they'll only be able to buy it in glass bottles!! They'll still buy Coke!! Plastic is cheap, lightweight, and what happens to the bottles afterwards, is not the company's problem. Glass, on the other hand, is more expensive, heavier, less manageable, and a collection system, whilst environmentally sound and common-sense, requires more resources to manage, and make the producer more responsible - and that. of course, all gets in the way of business, profit and greed. This video is a few years old - I wonder what Coca-Cola's policy is now...? Oh, and how big is that plastic bottle mountain, now, too, and how much more waste on the beaches?

The irony of wearing plastic gloves to manipulate plastic pieces, each in their separate Ziploc bag. While the consumer has a part to play to lessen plastic consumption and waste, most of the plastic found on beaches and in the ocean comes from the fishing industry.

You watch but don’t see .. why? We do not recycle so those who set out recycling tubs are damaging our planet. Trash goes in landfills which are fine and plenty., yes really . The tub contents get sold to countries that burn it or dump in ocean . Stop recycling you are the problem. Paper vs plastic is bad. Plastic bags we use for other things dog poop etc. they take up little space in landfills and do not contaminate. Most damaging is cloth bags . Their production 10x more dsmaging then paper which is 5x worse then plastic bags

I think this was more about the "promise" and nothing ever got done. Pepsi probably isn't any better on the amount but that didn't seem like the whole point of this which was more about how they aren't really doing much of anything

It seems like a two way street. Sure companies should have a recycle program in place but once the bottles are in the hands of the consumer it's really up to them how they dispose of it. The companies cannot force people to stop littering or force those people to return them. The coke worker in Tanzania is proof of that. People want something easy with less responsibility without much concern for how it impacts the environment. I'm guilty myself though but I don't litter. Probably unpopular opinion but I don't see how the blame of all this pollution can rest solely at the feet of the company.
