@@TG4KHD people in places such as Cambodia regularly sell their children. The kids are seen as cash cows. The parents are poor and uneducated and so are the kids. Apparently in Cambodia some girls are selling their virginity at young ages eg 13 years old for as little as $300 US. The sex trade is profitable and those that have no money or little education are easy pickings. So every time you face adversity in life remember if you have a roof over your head and food in your belly your doing better than most of the rest of the world. Also remember China is a developing country.
When I lived in Korea, I was pleasantly surprised when delivery was brought in reusable containers that were then picked up about 90 minutes later. It was fantastic.
Not all delivery is reusable. However, I agree, getting proper plates, and metal chopsticks was quite nice! Just placing it outside the door was strange at first, but since everyone in the office did it, I did as well, and like magic, within a few hours, they were all gone!
zhmz888 I am sure the cost of second trip in negligible considering 1) the use of scooters (low gas), 2) that the delivery person is probably delivering while also picking up 3) the tight geographic zoning of these restaurants' delivery service 4) the saving of not having to buy take out containers
Lisa, great idea. Places also like Bangladesh, Cambodia and Myanmar could possibly use them as well with a fraction of the transport costs. Just my thoughts.
yeah that's a whole lot of transportation they could probably just give them away in China to Chinese people. I'm sure there's a lot of people that do not live in those cities who could use those. And yes Africa and many other places could use those bikes.

China is lucky to be a sovereign nation today that's the reason they can stop your garbage importing. Back then 200 years ago, when China tried to stop opium trade, you triggered the war.
China not only process its own waste but also processed waste from Australia, America.Canada.Europe 70% waste. But it was suddenly banded all those waste from others countries from December of 2017. Now, those countries has big problem on its waste recycle.

This broke my heart. I can very much relate to these kids. When I was a kid, my mom left my two sisters and I with our grandparents so she could immigrate to Canada and make a life and eventually sponsor us. My dad didn't really know how to raise us so he was mostly working and ignored us. After 8 years we finally saw our mom and moved to Canada, but it was really hard growing up without her. Our aunts and uncles hated us and would abuse us both physically and mentally. We were like stray dogs around the house and no one cared if we did well in school. My grandfather would constantly remind me how ugly my small nose is just because I didn't have his nose. I hated myself and still do to this day. I would kill myself but I'm too scared to do it and don't want to hurt the people around me. I am constantly second guessing myself and even though I've been in a relationship with the most wonderful guy for over 13 years, I still wonder what he sees in me and think it's only a matter of time before he realizes how pathetic and useless I am and leaves. I don't know if my mom leaving had an affect on my current mentality but if it does, I wouldn't wish for any kid to grow up the way I did. I know my mom feels regret for leaving us, even though she was trying to provide a better life for us, so I never bring up how we were raised or how we felt living without her
I am a Canadian living in China and I really had no idea how the recycling system worked before watching this, so I really learned a lot. It's true, my city has bins with both waste and recycling side by side but if you look in the recycling it's always just a mish mash of waste. People don't know how it works, they aren't aware and there needs to be more awareness. It's also tough for me because when you go to the grocery store you need to individually wrap all your produce in single use plastic bags in order to get them tagged to go through the till- it's just a lot of unnecessary waste and I don't know how to go around it. I hope for a cleaner, greener future in China, for my students at least.

Recycling and rubbish sorting is all good - but what is needed is to stop producing one use items in the first place. And this is a difficult thing to do - because businesses need to change their business model.
Why don't they do up those bicycles, and send them out around the world, in some sort of scheme, where people can make good use of them, then problem solved!

There are thousands of Chinese kids adopted by Americans each year and a "donation" has to be made to the government facilities that houses the kid. I am pretty sure that donation exceeds the amount that kid would sell for in the market. The donation goes to the fund to support the disabled abandoned children that no one would want to adopt.

The ancient civilizations left back pyramids made of stone with architectural wonders. We will be remembered for the mountains of plastic waste we leave behind. Everything else we build today will be reduced to rubble in 200 years time. What a way to go modern civilization!
An Australian watching from Taiwan, another excellent documentary from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that gives a small unbiased look at what goes on in China. It's great they are on youtube because iView isn't available when overseas. They should take look to Taiwan garbage collection system, each resident has to purchase a small garbage bag that can be collected 5 days a week at predetermined times. There is no garbage bins or bags on the street, they have to be brought out of each person's house whenever the truck arrives which is signalled by music playing. There are then 3 trucks, one small garbage, one for separated recycling that workers man and educate and refuse to collect if they don't separate themselves, then a truck that collects compost from mostly food shops in big drums that people empty their bins into. They also let the garbage pickers who are generally elderly people do their work and live in the cities which actually keeps the streets trash free as long as they are not causing any trouble. The biggest part to all this is education and in Taiwan they are more educated and, littering is frowned upon by most of society which helps to keep the streets clean, and this is because Taiwan is more developed than china as it has had 20 year head start in economic development. Taiwan also has a high population density on a small island so it's not as easy to just cart off the garbage to somewhere unseen compared to China and Australia which have extremely large land masses. I think Australia can improve it's systems a lot more as well, we don't recycle near enough of what we should, a lot just gets buried in landfill but I'm glad our old practice of home incinerators is now gone. We should develop more of a local recycling industry but we don't have enough manufacturing anymore that could take advantage of it as a lot has gone off shore for cheaper cost like China. Also our fast food restaurants should be doing much more as most don't even have any recycling bins in them, it all goes in landfill, this was my first surprise coming to Taiwan that KFC and Mcdonalds both had recycling bins that even separate the food waste and water from the recycling, and it only take a couple of seconds more to do so it's not difficult.
Believe it or not, it’s far more economical as well as much better for the environment that waste is processed in one place, but, the question is WHERE and let’s face it, China needs resources more than it needs anything else.

China takes a lot of things to excess. the government gave some incentives to companies to begin bike share programmes, they dumped bikes on streets with nowhere that people are supposed to return them, so they are left everywhere and clog the streets. now the bikes are there, but the companies are defunct. they scammed everyone and moved on.
It look like there is a big social inequality there in China..... the uncle is working hard but he even have to pay a fee for his nephew to go to school... and that food delivery guy it look like he work from morning till night (regardless his disability) but it look like he is earning very little.... he have to share small apartment with 11 other people.... It look like there is not much space for compassion.
sonic070 Don't worry too much. The West we get social inequality. The US and Australia are currently transitioning to a "user pay"economy as housing becomes less affordable. And the cost of living is eroding the middle-class completely. Homeless rates are already starting to balloon in both paces.

Australia should be much more concerned about what is happening to Australian farming land. Australia has been one of 4 major Wheat Exporting nations. However, our Wheat crop has been gradually falling away since 1990 -- so that we imported Wheat for the first time in 2018. The acreage suitable for growing Wheat and other crops is declining. Australia has been in severe drought for about 7 years -- the worst drought since accurate records were kept. Quite likely Australia will cease to be a Wheat Exporter in the near future. Combined with the drought are record high temperatures. Half of the "Great Barrier Reef" died in just 2 years from warmer seas -- in 2016 & 2017. The LNP Govt does not even believe in Global Warming. They are opening a new Coal Mine (Adani), which will exacerbate the loss of farming land, and the shortage of water. Australia is more vulnerable to the effects of Climate Change than any other Continent. China has stopped accepting "the West's" rubbish, so we will have to solve that problem ourselves.

An Australian watching from Taiwan, another excellent documentary from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that gives a small unbiased look at what goes on in China. It's great they are on youtube because iView isn't available when overseas.
They should take look to Taiwan garbage collection system, each resident has to purchase a small garbage bag that can be collected 5 days a week at predetermined times. There is no garbage bins or bags on the street, they have to be brought out of each person's house whenever the truck arrives which is signalled by music playing. There are then 3 trucks, one small garbage, one for separated recycling that workers man and educate and refuse to collect if they don't separate themselves, then a truck that collects compost from mostly food shops in big drums that people empty their bins into. They also let the garbage pickers who are generally elderly people do their work and live in the cities which actually keeps the streets trash free as long as they are not causing any trouble.
The biggest part to all this is education and in Taiwan they are more educated and, littering is frowned upon by most of society which helps to keep the streets clean, and this is because Taiwan is more developed than china as it has had 20 year head start in economic development. Taiwan also has a high population density on a small island so it's not as easy to just cart off the garbage to somewhere unseen compared to China and Australia which have extremely large land masses.
I think Australia can improve it's systems a lot more as well, we don't recycle near enough of what we should, a lot just gets buried in landfill but I'm glad our old practice of home incinerators is now gone. We should develop more of a local recycling industry but we don't have enough manufacturing anymore that could take advantage of it as a lot has gone off shore for cheaper cost like China. Also our fast food restaurants should be doing much more as most don't even have any recycling bins in them, it all goes in landfill, this was my first surprise coming to Taiwan that KFC and Mcdonalds both had recycling bins that even separate the food waste and water from the recycling, and it only take a couple of seconds more to do so it's not difficult.

Believe it or not, it’s far more economical as well as much better for the environment that waste is processed in one place, but, the question is WHERE and let’s face it, China needs resources more than it needs anything else.

all those bikes should be given to poor countries in the Middle East and Africa to children who go to school. My cousin in Afghanistan walks 1.5 hours to get to school.

China takes a lot of things to excess. the government gave some incentives to companies to begin bike share programmes, they dumped bikes on streets with nowhere that people are supposed to return them, so they are left everywhere and clog the streets. now the bikes are there, but the companies are defunct. they scammed everyone and moved on.

It look like there is a big social inequality there in China..... the uncle is working hard but he even have to pay a fee for his nephew to go to school... and that food delivery guy it look like he work from morning till night (regardless his disability) but it look like he is earning very little.... he have to share small apartment with 11 other people....

sonic070 Don't worry too much. The West we get social inequality. The US and Australia are currently transitioning to a "user pay"economy as housing becomes less affordable. And the cost of living is eroding the middle-class completely. Homeless rates are already starting to balloon in both paces.

This IS the experience for many people in China but you Chinese get all embarrassed unless Western media shows you rich people in Shanghai. China has MILLIONS of peasant farmers who toil and labor while you rich and middle class Chinese take the credit. It's China's peasants who built your buildings, roads, subways ..and we can go all the way back to the Great Wall and Terracotta soldiers. They built them and often died in the process!! Yet what do rich and middle class Chinese do? they mostly look down on them and stand apart from them on the subways because they are "dirty and smelly". Frankly, the behavior and disdain of China's wealthy and middle class is often disgusting.

Won't be long now, there are too many people and we are trashing all of this planet. This is the most important problem in the world and very few of us are even talking about it or finding ways to deal with it. I'm glad I am in the last segment of my life instead of the first part.
Australia should be much more concerned about what is happening to Australian farming land. Australia has been one of 4 major Wheat Exporting nations. However, our Wheat crop has been gradually falling away since 1990 -- so that we imported Wheat for the first time in 2018. The acreage suitable for growing Wheat and other crops is declining. Australia has been in severe drought for about 7 years -- the worst drought since accurate records were kept. Quite likely Australia will cease to be a Wheat Exporter in the near future. Combined with the drought are record high temperatures. Half of the "Great Barrier Reef" died in just 2 years from warmer seas -- in 2016 & 2017. The LNP Govt does not even believe in Global Warming. They are opening a new Coal Mine (Adani), which will exacerbate the loss of farming land, and the shortage of water. Australia is more vulnerable to the effects of Climate Change than any other Continent.
China has stopped accepting "the West's" rubbish, so we will have to solve that problem ourselves.

I have never seen so much wasted stuff in my life. all those bikes.. just wasted.. why? they couldn't just ship them to the US OR other countries that might have a use for them ? as for the waste problem, I never knew it was a problem. amazing to hear about it. The population of Beijing, China is equal to total population of Australia. that really shocked me.
