This is great. Most videos are showing the good and/or bad things about the Neo, but you dived right in and showed us some capabilities of it that no one else has shown so far.
Already watched this multiple times! This is awesome for a total noob who is waiting for payday until I get this drone. been thinking about the Avata 2 for ages.. but I think this is the stepping stone drone I've been waiting for. Thank you for your tips, brilliantly explained with REASONING behind the shot. Perfect.
One of the things I really love about your channel and your work, is that the focus on: Know your Gear, Know your craft (video craft - no pun intended), and how get the best out of what you have. That golden hour light 0:52 🧡
It’s not the tool, sharp or blunt, that makes the art; but the creator’s hand, the fire within, the beating heart. Masterpieces were forged in pixels sparse, from those who saw the world anew and played their part. For in the end, it’s not the tech or screen, but the artist’s voice that shapes the unseen.
Appreciate the comment! Got some catching up to do! Amazing to see how well your channel is doing. Your videos are really sharp and your success is well deserved.
When doing a 'review', we need to be mindful of the price and DJI's target market. For example, we can't call out a $199 drone for not having 10-bit Dlog. I agree though, lots of non-beginners will be interested in this drone. The fact it's a hybrid FPV/camera drone is interesting for me. I always wanted to fly the Avata without goggles but you can't. I like this development with the Neo. Cheers!
@@adz-ql6kv DJI are playing it down the the 'for beginners' script that all the reviews use. I want to get the shot done quick and this drone seems to do that, without the set up time
Dear Stewart! I enjoyed watching your video, it was made with true professionalism and I can only congratulate you, as it provides serious lessons for many less knowledgeable people - including me - and I can use it well during my flights! I wish you more great videos! Greetings from Hungary.
Here's hoping you'll do a follow-up on your post-processing workflow from the NEO; a lot of review talk about the challenges with the image quality but you've clearly got things dialed in well between your drone settings and post. As always, thanks for sharing!
And now everyone is here....we can continue...with superb, no-fuss, interesting content. Nearly bought a Hover-Air, and then you tell me the Neo is out. In usual S+A style, we find out what it can do with a zero tech and jargon bombardment. Just it can / you can. Simple. Oh, and.....WE missed you.
Watching Potato Jet's episode peaked my interest in this "cheap and cheerful" drone because it could be flown with DJI remote controls. However I wasn't impressed with the Colour Profile. But then the drone is not really aimed at people who want to meddle with the footage in post production. You blew that thought out of the water. You both managed to work some magic with the Natural Profile footage, which I'm guessing was 8bit, to create some really good colour grades. This elevated the results way above what could be considered throw away TicToc or boring selfies for a drone that costs roughly the same price as a toy knock-off drone.
Thanks for the comment. Always good to see you here. We enjoy trying to get pro results from non-pro cameras. It's what we had to do back in the day when we didn't have great gear. That kind of 'adversity' for want of a better word is what made us learn our craft all those years ago.
The normal colour profile has too much contrast which was putting me off. But your grading made it look not too bad. I'm definitely considering this as a leave in my bag all the time drone and using the phone app to control it to get a few establishers while I'm traveling light on certain projects
I just pre-ordered mine and was like “Oh sh*t” do I need a remote (which was $40 more than this drone)… annnnddddd I don’t! I’m super stoked for this as a Real Estate Agent. Excited for all the possibilities without spending a fortune and having a massive learning curve. Thanks for the great video! ❤
I have been watching your videos since the first Mavic, great as always. You have done some magic with the color grading, the default looks bad, I think it's worth a tutorial on it's own.
Hi there, great tio have you back. The DJI Neo footage looks really great, so much better than the oversharpened (maybe default-) imgaes of some other videos. What exactly is your workflow to achieve these pictures?
Thanks for the comment! We are going to do a video on this because we want to show what the camera is capable of. The camera is good but the one-size-fits-all way it is setup is a bit harsh. First and foremost, the exposure and white balance must be locked otherwise the shifts are really extreme especially in direct sunlight. Overcast days with flat light are fine but with contrasty harsh light you have to be in charge of the exposure. This is the main thing that differentiates our footage from others because at present, the no-controller quick shots only shoot auto exposure/WB and even with phone-only control, you can't fix the exposure. I'd like to see them either add manual exposure controls to the phone-only app or at least allow you to touch and hold the live preview like you can on an iPhone to lock exposure. After this we have flattened out the contrasty Normal colour profile in post and made some colour adjustments. It's the harsh Normal colour profile that makes the footage look over sharpened - it's too severe in my opinion. Of course, the goal for a $199 beginner drone is to not give too many confusing settings but at the moment, manual exposure/WB is only available when you use the remote control and the regular DJI Fly app.
Fantastic video thanks!! Just got my neo a few days ago, made a vid yesterday which I thought was great, but can’t wait to try out your tips today to take to next level!! Cheers
Is this drone a two in one? Fpv and normal drone. Apart from high wind resistance due to its size and minimal camera options this seems to be a do it all drone. I have avata 2 and I wishes it had stabilised videos. Neo is one axis stabilisation but it’s clips look unaffected by wind or tilting
As always very fair and illustrating what is possible with a budget drone. Much more advanced than when I started and with one of the many location in Scotland what could be better showcase. Keep up the great work
Just ordered this drone and am completely new to drone flying/filming. Thank you for this instructional video! Do you have a video on how you do your color grading?
That footage at the beginning looked stunning with your grading. As usual with your videos great presentation, loads of useful info and enjoyable to watch. I think this is a really interesting drone with its choice of control methods that gives it some flexibility and at a size that makes me much more likely to actually fly it with minimal set up and taking up little space to carry. With the inevitable DJI updates, its only going to get better as well.
Great video as always 😊. Can someone please confirm: when using the rc-n3 controller there is cruise control available as a programmable function to the press or dubblepress "fn"-button ? Someone on another channel showed this ...
I'm very curious, if you are connect to the RC is the follow mode the same, meaning if i am talking to the camera and walking toward it, will it move as if it were a camera man when connected to the RC?

Welcome back! Great location shots! I’m positive I visited that “house” some years ago but can’t remember what it is called. When I was there they had a falconry demonstration which was amazing. Please put me out of my misery.
I like the follow mode. But, for a change of perpective, could I run and have the Neo in front of me, flying backwards at the same speed as my running pace ? Maybe with Spotlight ? Any help on that, please ?
Is this drone good to capture landscape shots and Island shot by raising high and move a little far from us? Considering myself a total beginner for drone ?
Great video tricks! Question can the circle/ orbit mode track a moving subject. In your example, subject was static in orbit mode. What if the subject was moving or walking, can Neo “orbit” n dynamically around the moving subject?
Finally caught up with your video❤ Good explanation of the tracking and there’s still so much potential to unlock. Have you tried Helix or Boomerang on a moving subject? The lock point seems to follow the subject and it’s a great shot.
For sure! We've always been a big fan of Quickshots on the other drones because there is virtually no set-up time and like you say, you can actually move and it will track you on these complex moves. The nuisance has always been that Quickshots are limited to 30fps and we like to shoot 25fps. Dropping a 30fps Quickshot into a 25fps timeline looks jittery. I don't know why DJI restricts the frame rates on the other drones because they unlocked full manual exposure settings and all the colour profiles too. Anyway, for this DJI Neo, putting aside the frame rate being fixed at 30fps, if you do the Quickshots with the controller and lock in a manual exposure/WB then they are great - and not just for beginners. Cheers!
Nice to have a different look at the Neo. Apart from colour, did you have to denoise or process in other ways at all? PotatoJet's footage looked quite noisy "out of the can".
Hey! No trickery going on here - just manual exposure/WB and a minor colour grade. To our amazement, it was easy to modify the image. The 1/2" sensor is a big sensor by drone standards (many of the older but excellent DJI drones had a 1/2.3" sensor) so I think the camera is very good. But DJI have baked in a severe colour profile so things look good out the box for beginners. Makes sense but in high contrast scenarios it's a bit rough and would be nice to have some more control in the app without having to 'fix' things in post (even though it's 'just' a beginner drone).
This is great. Most videos are showing the good and/or bad things about the Neo, but you dived right in and showed us some capabilities of it that no one else has shown so far.
