Helldiver here. FYI about Malevelon Creek.
When the bots entered into the game, they basically bullrushed the entire north-western portion of the galaxy where Super Earth had control. Entire sectors, which had multiple star systems, were invaded and subjugated within _days_ of being attacked.
Malevelon Creek was one of the systems of the invasion, and taking it would lead to allowing the liberation the sector it was situated in.
People played it, as normal, and won it back. But then, in 24 hours real time, the bots retook it. This repeated multiple times, and it became a meme, and then became part of the game story. It resulted in all the videos you would see on YT. For those who played it, because of the bots retaking it so many times, it became somewhat personal because they would not quit until the creek was retaken _permanently._
In game, the lore is that Helldivers from the Terminid front (the Bugs) were used to fighting the bugs and thought the bots would be just as easy, but the Bots could actually _shoot back, plan, and actually shoot ships out of orbit,_ which took them all by surprise, resulting in a massacre. 12,000,000+ casualties in _two days._
The survivors were literally crawling around to keep themselves hidden and alive, hence earning the moniker "Creek Crawler" which is a name all creek veterans from the start of the battle are known by. The description "Space Vietnam" became a thing because it was a jungle planet, and you couldn't see the bots when they were shooting at you. It was asymmetrical warfare everywhere, and the bots are relentless.
As a result, in both the game, and in real life, people volunteered/bought the game, and joined the battle to retake the creek. It was only after 58 _REAL LIFE DAYS_ of fighting the bots that finally it was permanently liberated, along with the sector.
As a result, Arrowhead Studios/Super Earth recognized the achievement and named April 1st "Liberation Day" for the victory of the creek.
While Helldivers was already a good game, it was this event, and its videos, that more or less raise it to public mainstream.

and unfortunately, "Creekers" now get a bad rep because they typically don't want to help on any other planet.
but there are also people who just flat out refuse to fight against bots because of the aformentioned reasons above. They like the ease of fighting bugs because they don't shoot.

time to go check out pesticide and blackhole, two more helldiver theme'd originals by jonathan young. They are good as well, but personally blackhole hits the hardest and is on another level.
