Also you're not being reductive lmao I'm pretty sure Super Sonic WAS originally intended as a direct reference to Super Saiyan, like seven chaos emeralds, seven dragon balls, Sonic is Goku, Shadow is Vegeta, Silver is Trunks (travels back in time to avert a disastrous future)
@@PlateOfColours at least that’s what my friend who is a Dragon Ball fan and has also been a Sonic fan longer than me tells me, that these are all intentional references lmao
A nonspoiler spoiler for sonic 3: Cruah 40, the original band for a lot of the sonic games, posted a tweet saying that one of their songs is gonna be in the movie. Here I thought "oh its gonna be playing on someone's phone or playing casually in the background" Nope........ they blasted that during the epic climax of the movie while sonic and shadow were kicking ass. The movie understood what the people wanted Disney DOESN'T understand the people and gave us an unnecessary prequel to a soulless cash geab of a movie nobody asked for. Surprise surprise, they're losing AGAIN. Maybe this time they'll........... live and learn lol
nah disneys just gonna keep doing the same thing because they are creatively bankrupt and theres more soulless remakes announced such as lilo and stick and snow white
Disney really gotta Open Their Heart to the audience and stop with the hyper realistic cgi movied, see what Endless Possibility there is in newer creative visions, maybe just maybe they’ll get a Fist Bump or smth
I swear on my life, if Mufasa was 2d animated, people would be more willing to give it a chance, even if just slightly. But Disney is so allergic to good anumatjon nowadays that they think they can kill people with one so they just do sloppy animated movies now, and Encanto was a failed lab experiment they accidentally let loose
Should have made Scar attracted to Mufasa, he sees Mufasa falling in love, and that rejection results in searching for a new purpose in life: Power and control.
@@Takisan111to be fair the point is that he’s an old man, just because old people wouldn’t think a woman would be in the military doesn’t mean they dislike women
I felt bad for him. The whole time he didn't have any family finally he finds his grandfather only to find that he used him as bait for his personal project. More like apocalypse.
The movie genuinely made me feel for Eggman in a way no piece of Sonic media has before. It really makes you think and feel for this man whose been unloved and abandoned his whole life - especially with lines like this.
Mufasa is yet another soulless Disney origin story prequel that absolutely nobody asked for. Sonic has evidently a lot of heart, and you can tell that the people who worked on it were passionate about it.
I would have loved a mufasa story, if it had been A: Animated the traditional way, not this weird cgi that just doesnt work for this type of movie for me. And B kept Mufasa and Scar actual brothers. I dont care if thats not realistic for real lions. Neither is Simba not killing every single lion Cub he did not father in his territory/pride. Neither is Nala not being Simba's sibling considering Mufasa was the dominant lion of that pride where Nala's mom lived in. Neither is scar even being part of the pride at all, regardless if he's blood related or not. Nature doesnt follow strict rules. There can and are exceptions to everything. Ironicly the rare times there is an exception and one male tolerates another male in their pride it is almost always a brother. Not related male lions are chased off or killed. Usualy speaking the lion king ignores a lot of real lion stuff to make it watchable for kids as a cartoon. Its not a lion documentary, its a child friendly shakespeare Hamlet with lions. Them being brothers was/ is vital to the story. The whole story is filled with scar mufasa and simba using family terms. Its a recon, and a poor one, based on lion behavior which has nothing to do with the story. I repeat, its hamlet with lions. No real Lions acting or behaving like real lions are anywhere near the lion king movies. 2D or CGI. I was already dissapointed they decided to go with CGI animation over 2D animation (especialy as 2D seems like it would be both cheaper and more beloved in this case) but the ''not actual brothers'' retcon that started to pop up in 2017 interview I belief killed any chance it had of me going to see it. In my world Scar and Mufasa remain brothers, and Simba doesnt have children with weird super powers. (Yes I am ignoring the lion guard as well, that series makes no sense in context to simba's pride that implies Simba to just have one child at that moment in time. I hate all these lion king retcons. Disney.. make sequels and prequels as you see fit, just dont retcon anything while you do so (Including personalities or character growth).
@@darryljack6612 I know that Sonic has trumped Mufasa in NZ and Australia by roughly $2 million more; but Mufasa has a higher cumulative audience compared to Sonic, and managed to bring in more money over a couple weekends here. Might look into it more lol it's kind of interesting to me.
Something I really appreciated towards the end was that Eggman's message to Stone was taken seriously. There was no one in the street saying "what a weird guy" or anything like that. We actually got to see a nice and sad moment between them without undercutting it with some terrible MCU-style joke.
that was what impressed me the most about the movie. the serious moments took themselves seriously. they didn’t undercut themselves. like, when walters actually DIED, i was shellshocked. i did not think such a kid-oriented humorous movie was capable of tackling a moment like that so early on, but they did it well.
And better yet, this was for the main villain of the series up to this point! The wacky Robot Egg guy gets a genuinely heartwarming moment that's well written and earnest... In the third Sonic the hedgehog movie... Honestly after years of slogging through MCU Wheadon-style quips, genuine earnestness and emotion is a breath of fresh air. Give me more cheesy moments like that, please, I love actually feeling things when watching a film
What I found really amazing about that was the film's subtle message that the family you choose is more important than your blood family. So much of our media hammers into us the importance of sticking by your family, forgiving them when they hurt you, etc. But Sonic 3 comes in and says "if your blood family hurts you, punch them in the sternum". That's a message that I think people really need to hear, especially kids who have abusive and/or narcissistic parents.
I always say: "The fetishization of hyperrealism is killing art". And that happened to Mufasa, the upcoming Minecraft movie and so many more. I hate it. Good art direction and especially stilisation is much more appealing and wont be outdated in a few years. Like my friends and I watched the animated "Robots" movie from 2005 and it looks amazing.
Sonic is the perfect case study for this idea in action funny enough. First design they revealed was meant to be more realistic for a live action film, fans hated it and they then reverted to a more cartoon design that feels ripped straight from the video games, and fans absolutely love it. Three very successful movies later and it's clear realism doesn't equal a good design for Sonic, and sticking to what works is much better than trying to reinvent the wheel for no reason. Spiderverse also thrives on unrealistic designs and character proportions to make for a more compelling visual experience, it's almost like people forgot we're here to be entertained and not impressed with your tech
@@drpepperman2765 It's kind of like that period in video games when leaps forward in graphics tech were being used for military shooters with a paleete of muddy brown--but very detailed muddy brown!
Video games are a perfect example of that. There was a solid 10 years during the PS3 era where Brown and grey and boring were the cutting edge of technology. It was a grim time for artstyle.
I rewatched Shrek recently and could not believe how great the film looks. The animation is AI clean and superb. Idk why Disney feels the need to keep pumping out these ugly "realism" movies and remakes... like you already know what made you money, and there tons of other companies putting out animated films right now that are killing it at the box office and getting good reviews. It's so wild how Disney isn't embracing animation as well as they should be.. not to mention the horrible pacing and bad writing. I loved Moana 1, only issue I had was the ending felt rushed, but Moana 2 was pretty bad and the music went from beautiful and catchy to awkward and forgettable...
@@merrin2273Imagine if Shrek was made realistically. Stylization is actually a tool to create more relatability and just make things look more appealing in animation. I doubt anyone would want to watch hyper realistic Shrek unless they were challenging themselves to watch something gross.
I feel like Mufasa is just "let's retraumatize the Millennials" movie. What's next? A movie about how Bambi's parents met? Nemo's mom getting her Master's before meeting Marlin? The first five minutes of Up, but a full length feature movie?????
Oh no, don’t make us love and lose Ellie even more than the first five minutes. I’m such a sucker for nonverbal storytelling and that one takes the cake.
Shadow having so much PTSD and survivor's guilt because he remembered her while in stasis and in his mind, she only died a few days ago. Also Shadow's skate stuff being inspired by Maria's skating habit uugghh
I'm kinda bummed that they had shadow arrive with his hover boots. In his lore Maria is actually the one who designed his shoes in the first place and it's the one thing she gave him that he is able to keep with him
@@TFStudios that was revealed in Shadow Generations which is a pretty recent game, so I wouldn't blame the filmmakers for not including this detail since the movie was already done by the time the game came out.
Something something how the film score recontextualizes Live and Learn by having it pop up in that first flashback via Maria playing an acoustic take on That Iconic Riff on her guitar I swear it’s not the only time in the movie I heard that motif prior to The Big Moment but I’d need to see it again to confirm. Either way, _oof wow boy the implications made by that choice, I am 29 years old and once again I find myself unable to be normal about Sonic_
Super Sonic was legitimately inspired by Dragon Ball... Right down to the fact that in Sonic 2 when they introduced Super Sonic, they increased the number of emeralds from 6 to 7 - matching the number of Dragonballs required to grant a wish
Shadow is super Vegeta coded. He's a hot head loner with a screwed up past who thinks hes the best, but has a good heart under all the arrogance and pain.
the fact that Scar plotted with random white lions (eerily similar to japan's lion movie based on othello Kimba....) and not like.....the hyenas. the hyenas he is plotting with and has an established relationship with in the first movie.
Actually in the 2019 remake Scar doesnt know the hyenas. Which is just another fantastic decision that movie decided to make. So really random white lions is par for the course honestly
It's crazy how far we have gone with these Sonic movies. I remember like it was yesterday when Paramount dropped that Ugly Sonic trailer for the first movie and everyone went nuts with it so the studio delayed the first movie for 3 months just to redesign it 😂
@@Erasureeraser it gives me such respect for the studio that they actually listened and were rewarded with three sequels. Went to a fan event showing for this one and the crowd came out. It was pretty cool to see in just some random theater in Washington.
I also find it funny that Sonic 2 wound up being one of the most profitable movie in 2020, even beating Chris Nolan’s movie Tenet. Obviously the pandemic played a huge part in this (Sonic 2 came out before the lockdowns began).
I really appreciated sonic being willing to straight up pull form media they’ve done before. Not only was a good chunk of the plot straight up Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, but there’s even a song they used for the climax that was used in the same spot in the game. They know and care about their fans. It’s… been a hot minute since Disney has done anything that made think they even considered what fans might like.
Plus adding more direct nods to future plot points (Shadow crashing in a meteor instead of being a test tube baby plus his chaos powers hints at Black Doom) and setting things up for a potential Sonic CD/Heroes mash up for 4, it's clear these writers genuinely love the characters and want to build this franchise as big as it can get. Genuine passion and enthusiasm makes for good movies, who'd have thought?
I'm a nearly 40 yr. old Adult Male... and when that song started in the Climax of Sonic 3 I was overcome with waves of Emotions in all the best ways. I was Excited, hyped, and shedding a tear in shear joy.
I rolled my eyes so hard and had to hold in a boo in a theater full of children when I realized the crux of the rivalry was Taka (and the plot) not validating female agency. How is it nearly 2025 and a woman daring to have her own feelings and opinions is considered another man's betrayal as though she were property or something to passively be taken or given? So gross.
This is a work of fiction about lions and in no way is required to embody antiquated human views on women from western media. There's no excuse to perpetuate these harmful depictions, especially when intended for a young audience.
Maybe something funny. In the Sonic movie, they actually have Shadow comment on a soap opera that he thinks the heroine should kill two men dueling over her because she "she's not a prize to be won". The edgy anthropomorphic hedgehog, that is currently being bad, rejects the premise that a female character should have her agency taken away and treated like a trophy.
@dragonsman4733 they're anthropomorphised lions, you dolt, you have no idea when it was set and also whenever it's set doesn't matter, it's cgi to be shown to a modern audience. Imbecile take.
From what I know, it was because of China. There are two reasons, that being China hadn't seen movies with the CGI that was seen in Lion King and the fact that apparently, they hadn't seen the original (though I'm skeptical on that one).
Easy, nostalgia. Nostalgia sells. That movie came out 2 months after the Aladdin remake which the latter made over a billion dollar so it was still a huge trend back then
2019 was the peak year for shameless nostalgia milking. The shitty Aladdin reboot, the unnecessary Toy Story 4, the boring as fuck Frozen 2, and the umpteenth Star Wars sequel that none of the franchise's fans seemed to like all grossed a over billion dollars EACH that year. In a post-streaming world, a lot of people are only going to the theaters to see characters and stories that they already know because they don't wanna risk wasting money on seeing something new that they might not like. All Lion King 2019 had to do was hit every reference point on the checklist for nostalgia-addicted millennials and Gen X'ers who loved the original to make money. They don't care if the movie is good because "omg my childhood!" is all that floods through their brains watching this shit
I have a 8 year old. He likes the original Lion King, but he refuses to acknowledge the remake or Mufasa. But he genuinely loves the Sonic movies, which hits me right in the heart because I grew up with the games. So far he loves the games, shows and characters of Sonic. And we've seen all the movies in theaters.
So basically they didn’t like that Scar is commonly viewed as kind of a fun, evil, queer icon, so they decided to take away everything about him that made him fun.
I shed a tear over doomed gays in sonic 3 and while I haven't seen mufasa (and don't intend to) i imagine that movie wouldn't let me have that experience
In terms of scar and mufasa’s relationship, wouldn’t it make more sense to have them be brothers from the same pride and scar had always been ignored by his family in favor of mufasa cause mufasa is going to be the king. Maybe they do start off being really close brothers but as they get older Scar starts to get more and more jealous of his brother and then eventually it ends with Scar not being able to go back on his hate. Or you could do Mufasa told Scar that he could have the throne cause he didn’t want it. But then he realizes that Scar isn’t going to be the right leader for the rest of the kingdom. (Maybe Scar makes an extremely selfish choice and just doesn’t care about the rest of them) and that he has to be the one to take the throne and he starts being more responsible but Scar is pissed cause he feels betrayed and cheated.
That's pretty much the story in the books that were released around the time of the original movie. In the book "A Tale of Two Brothers", Taka (which means "garbage" in Swahili) is jealous of Mufasa (which means "King" in Swahili, so...), he thinks he should be king, but Mufasa is the heir, he gets his scar from a water buffalo attacking him, and Mufasa says he has to be called Scar from now on in lieu of banning him for betraying the throne (which is actually an improvement over calling him garbage...)
This is literally why I won't watch it. The moment I saw the first trailer and realized they were adoptive brothers instead of blood brothers, ergo ignoring the extended universe of the original movie, I lost what little interest I had for this movie.
And honestly, on the surface, it's harder to stay true to source material with Sonic, (as it's based on a video game, something known for being difficult to adapt well) and i feel like Lion King has enough there to make a good prequel with
The Sonic movie isn’t anywhere close to the source material, but it is a fun movie with a speedy blue hedgehog goofing off with his friends. When the movies first came out I was wary of the abundance of human characters, there was a Chris shaped reason of why some hated Sonic X
@clouddavis I think "respect the source material" and "stick to the source material" are 2 different statements. Sonic is obviously a very different STORY, but the energy and vibes and overall written tone of the movies are respect the original. Its like the original live action Avatar vs the 2015 Cinderella.
Disney being mad that Mufasa isn’t doing better than sonic 3 at the box office is hilarious to me bc Sonic 3 was an amazing experience. The sonic franchise has made Jim Carrey want to do sequels and I love that bc this man never fails to make me laugh.
It could be argued Jim Carrey single handedly saved the franchise by garnering public interest in the film at a time when the games were in a very, very rough spot, leading Sega and the studio to invest more into the film to see whether or not the franchise was worth larger game budgets. This is all speculation on my part, but I can definitely see it. The movies, if nothing else, saved the franchise imo. After Forces I thought Sega was ready to retire the guy but after the movie was a hit, Frontiers was given more time and money for development while they rereleased one of the more beloved modern Sonic games that was locked on the Wii before then (Colors). Since the film series started, it seems that Sega has finally decided to give Sonic the time and attention he needs to shine like he did back in the 90s, and I'm all here for it. Beyond hyped for Frontiers 2 and Sonic movie 4, the franchise hasn't been this good in literally decades lol
@@drpepperman2765no I definitely agree, he had played a part in why these movies are so successful. I only watched the first one when it came out bc Jim Carrey was announced to be in the movie. I hope he’s not actually dead or if he is let time travel play a part to give us more Jim Carrey.
Just no point in mufasa like if anyone likes it that's cool but why did we need this film there's no point I feel the other animated films do so much better at giving the same emotions and feelings
Higher ups showing again and again how incompetent they are is impressive, like first couldn't they simply see that in their own platform what Lion King gets more views? Because I really doubt the 3D one gets more views than the original, and second don't they know that is launching multiple terrible semi realistic animals movies since Lion King 2019 came out making audiences distrust and not wish to see these types of movies?
The thing that most surprised me in Sonic 3 was the emotional payoff to Eggman's arc with Agent Stone, "I loved the way you make them". I thought it was a really powerful callback to the original movie.
Yeah I definitely teared up at the end there. Both of them are such great actors too! They both had me laughing and also tearing up in different scenes.
9:03 There's a deleted song from the original Lion King that was in the musical where Scar starts flirting with Nala because he realises he needs an heir. It was eventually taken out of the musical but I think I remember it being in the production I saw in the early 2000s. It's so annoying that Mufasa and Scar already had an established backstory in the book A Tale of Two Brothers that came out in 1994. The story is even told to Simba's son, Kopa, by Rafiki the same way he tells it to Kiara in the movie. I don't understand why they didn't just adapt that. It would have felt new since a lot of people might not know it even exists.
He was doing worse than flirting. He was straight up trying to assault poor girly. They cut it because it was too serious but they kept Nala running away (which was because of the cut)
I've seen the Sonic 3 movie twice and I love the way they characterized Shadow, like really made him a fleshed out character and I love it! While I do love the edgy memey Shadow, they made him so lovable and really just AAAAH I love this movie sooooo much!!! Edit: Yes they were based off of DBZ by the way. Especially Vegeta being on Shadow's character deveolpment sheet.
If it was copyright then the chinese would be having a field day w DB cause it uses a lot of Xianxia thropes. Not even mentioning how the MC’s name is literally Sun Wukong’s JP localization (Son Goku).
Silver is not trunks there's a forgotten game that Sega worked on in 2006 beside sonic 06 There's a character that resembles silver and this game is definitely based of time travel so silver is not intentionally by many compare to trunks
I've liked Sonic since I was a kid, and I'm in my 30s now. I really like these movies. I do not mind the fresh take on Sonic's character to be a kid learning his way through the world and finding his confidence. I really like the found family aspect of these movies, and I love the human characters too. I even liked the wedding scene in 2. It's not my favorite take on Robotnik, but what Jim Carrey does with the role makes me like it so much that it wraps back around to that not even mattering because it's so good. And Lee Majdoub's Agent Stone is a treasure. Beyond all of that, I love Sonic 3. For being a very satisfying adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2, while also continuing with the vibe these movies have established. And for respecting Shadow's character and backstory in a way that the games hadn't, since his first appearance, until very recently. Great video! I'm glad you liked it!
Stone was the best human character after the Robotniks, the poor guy went through so much! Also the actor is so good, there is so much going on in his eyes alone.
The portrayal of movie sonic seems to really borrow from the western take of him which is kind of interesting how eggman is clearly based on the modern/japanese take of him being bumbling and campy rather than being a scary villian from 90s western media. Sonic in Japan’s take is essentially a shonen and sonic x is the best example of what they would portray him which because of this they invented Chris and yeah I think most would prefer most of the movie human characters over him
Why do I feel like The Lion Guard, the show made for TODDLERS, might've given Scar a better backstory or whatever than the theatrical "live-action" movie gave him?
The Lion Guard did have an almost weird level of reverence for the general lore and plot of the two TLK movies. I was pleasantly surprised when they opted to respect TLK2's plot and not decanonize it, to the point of basically carving out story time for TLK2's plot to occur in the overall timeline of the show and incorporating it in
The Lion Guard slaps honestly. My kids love it so I've seen most episodes and yeah, they did a really good job with their story arcs and respect to The Lion King lore established in the movies.
@@tkgriffeth3819 Honestly a lot of the Disney channel sequel shows are surprisingly good. Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure is basically S tier Disney sequel content
I saw the Scar episode on UA-cam, way better telling of how Scar became Scar without sacrificing his personality. Scar meets random male lion, “befriends” him and he betrays him giving him a scar, then Scar dumps him and destroys him. Classic Scar.
@@madisonlederer1545 Whoever was running Disney Channel and Disney Junior during that time had better have received an excellent paycheck, they knew what the people wanted.
It's honestly kinda poetic that a series that lost its way, time and time again, finally finds its footing and has proceeded to land hit after hit because of that is facing off against a movie that is a direct result of a nihilistic, capitalistic, greedy corporation that has for the past few years just been recklessly throwing stuff against the wall and hoping something will stick. The Sonic Series as of recent years has been living and learning, finding their flame, and now have something with endless possibilities, while Disney has lost their way and seems to have no intention of improving their quality, even while they are getting stomped by a franchise who lost the console war. It is crazy that we live in this timeline.
Took my kids to see it, definitely recommend. Easily movie of the year for me. Also, depending on how old your kids are, they DID slightly change Maria's death from the games to be an accidental death from an explosion, and the actual death happens offscreen, with it only showing Shadow and Gerald finding her body afterward. My youngest is 6 and I was sweating bullets when we were getting close to that scene with how accurate other parts were lol.
I would have enjoyed Mufasa waaaay more if it had turned out that Scar had had a positive character arc instead of a negative one to end up as his character in Lion King and was an unhinged maniac as a young lion who just mellowed into his Machiavellian older self. I wanted him serving Dio vibes.
Aw man that would have been cool. And they could have had Mufasa refusing to give up on him and still loving his brother and it would have added to the tragedy of knowing Scar ends up killing him. Speaking of Jojo, in the Sonic movie japanese dub Knuckles shares his voice actor with Pesci and Shadow with Kira
8:25 tbf, the reason why Mufasa and Scar have a fallout over Sarabi in this movie is because they established this as the reason for Scar's jealousy back in the remake (and it was stupid there, too 😂)

I remember both of those films being compared in terms of the whole "Live Action Uncanny Valley Animation" angle, alongside Cats. Sonic 2020 was the only one that was in any position to change itself and thankfully it did.
I watched Sonic 3 today and kind of loved it. I wasn't wild about all the humor, but the emotional beats were so well-written and heartfelt and had some genuine tearjerkers, you could tell the writers put a lot of heart into the characters
Kinda sad you barely mentioned Agent Stone and Robotnik. I just love their queer ass relationship. Stone was the best original human character addition to the franchise ever. He fits in the universe so well. People really love him and want him in the games.

I am a huge Sonic fan whose favorite character is Shadow. I liked Sonic Movie 3 so much. The entire time I was watching the movie I could tell they did their research. All the changes they made to Shadow's backstory from the games felt very intentional and not a result of them being lazy. The movie also had a lot of easter eggs that were integrated so seamlessly. And the most important thing, they got Shadow's personality right. This is exactly how I'd picture Shadow's personality being like considering the changes that were made to his backstory.
I also like that they made sure to use big set pieces from SA2 (the moon, the Eggman's broadcast, Sonic's low budget flight line) but everything is reworked into a different context, giving fans what they want to see in an adaptation without us knowing what exactly is coming. Also the fact that the trailer made it clear this was going to be different; showing that Gerald is alive and not making it a surprise to the audience. I think it helped people go in more open to the changes.
I feel like Mufasa just retcons so much of Lion King. All the talk Mufasa has with Simba about previous generations of kings looking down on him, for instance. It also feels less special that the 'everything the light touches' speech wasn't said before as this kingdom has only been ruled for one generation. Its completely destroyed Scar as a character. The whole thing just works to make Lion King feel less special and adds nothing.
I read Jenkins openly addressing the "sellout" talk with how he always loved the original Lion King and just wanted a huge challenge. hey, his choice and a good payday to get other projects going.
Oh I'd never call him a sellout, we all gotta eat and it would be a completely different project for him, I just hope he got appropriately compensated. I wish he had a better script to work with.
Ironically, he kind of played himself as he criticized fully digital filmmaking hard just a few days before Mufasa premiere. This is clearly a paycheck film to do projects he wants to make.
Sonic, despite being a corporate product technically, feels like a passion product. All three of them do. They’re made with so much heart and so much effort and you can tell that Fowler and his team absolutely love the franchise and its characters. They’re such a treat to experience.
I would bet money that the higher ups at Disney instructed the filmmaker to not have Scar be flamboyant or anything close to being seen as queer-coded. We already know they told the makers of Inside Out 2 to make sure Riley didn't look gay, so we know that's a level they will gladly stoop to.
I believe you're right. But to add to it: Introducing the concept of "white" lions invading and annihilating indigenous lion tribes as a clumsy allegory for colonialism could have been an intriguing direction. However, this potential was squandered by undermining the female characters and rewriting one of the most compelling gay coded antagonists in animated films into an incel with mommy issues was terrible. The only way it could have been worse is if they had cast only white voice actors for the white lions... Wait a second they would do that right... let me check. Oh, wow, the voice actor for the villainous white lion is, indeed, white.
As a long-time Sonic fan, and a Lion King girlie, I can safely say Sonic 3 was the better movie. Sonic 3 was made by Sonic fans who loved the source material (Sonic Adventure 2) and I thought adapted it really well, letting it stand on its own for new viewers while (appropriately) pandering to us older fans. I absolutely LOVED this version of Maria, she's so full of life and even though we barely spend any time with her, you immediately understand why her lose is felt so strongly. I never really got that from the games, she was just the granddaughter/nice girl. Here she's a 70s preteen. Also they put Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves, on a motorcycle and made him do the Akira slide UP TOKYO TOWER. 10/10 no notes.
Dear Disney, villains are allowed to be evil. Scar was a jealous, power hungry, sass bucket, that's what I love. Scar is not Frollo, incel Frollo makes sense because it is to show to extreme opposite to Quasi in response to Esmeralda. There were *plenty* of opportunities to build Scar up (though them not being brothers is beyond dumb), show crappy parents favoring Mufasa (that's what he implied in the first movie). Resentment and jealousy takes years to build up, not two days after a girl rejects him, come on. I'm going to pretend that this and 2019 don't exist, never forgave them for slam poetry Be Prepared.
The fact that Scar isn't actually related to Mufasa in this version really angers me. The tragedy of not getting to be king simply because he's younger just parallels real life monarchies of the past. And he's so much more interesting in the original.
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was one of my FAVORITE games growing up, so seeing that Sonic 3 stuck with game's plot while still embracing this movie series' timeline/characters is so heartwarming. They may be silly but you can really tell that the Sonic movies care about the original stories, it's an adaptation that I'm never upset about seeing new installments in and I honestly say bring on more of them.
Sonic 3 vs Mufasa is a classic example of what listening to fans looks like vs what happens when you don't. I doubt Disney will change course but I hope someone there sees this and reflects a bit before putting out their next stinker.
Another thing that I like about the Sonic movies, are the more subtle references they make. I always have so much fun catching all the little things, like the Cafe being called the Mean Bean (Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine), or Shadow and Maria watching a movie about the Biolizard, or even just the promotional material (I was so stoked to see Sonic 2 reference the game Sonic 2, and even more happy Sonic 3 continues it with SA2)! Nothing feels forced and you can tell they really love the source material.
They retconned that. Mufasa is now a peasant risen to kinghood and "Uncle Scar" is now family friend you just call uncle. Guess they forgot it was Hamlet with lions.
That... sucks. The whole reason the original betrayal resonates is the family aspect. Were they getting tired of being called "Hamlet with lions"? Cause I can think of worse authors to be compared to.
@@MisBabbles I agree. It's much more meaningful when they are actual brothers. I think it also makes Scar's choice not to kill Simba and Simba's choice not to kill Scar both much more impactful as well.
@@taylordinney1484 i like to think Mufasa as a prequel to the 2019 live action remake of the lion king, than the actual lion king lore from the original movie
I haven’t seen Sonic 3 yet but the way you described Shadow busting out of that tank made me think of Mewtwo from Pokemon and the way he learns that lesson at the end is also like Mewtwo.
The helicopter scene is when I knew for certain that Sonic 3 was going to hit all the right beats, when Sonic says "Talk about low budget flights, no food or movies? We're outta here." This is taken almost verbatim from Sonic's first line in Sonic Adventure 2.
I saw Sonic the Hedgehog 3 today. The action scene is amazing, and Shadow and Maria's scenes were good. I like the story of Sonic 3, but I am sad about Maria's death. I was crying in that scene. Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Keanu Reeves, and Jim Carrey were great in the film. It was awesome when Sonic and Shadow became Super Sonic and Super Shadow. I played some Sonic games, but I am really bad at them. I played Shadow the Hedgehog on PlayStation 2, and it was a disappointing game. I didn't see Mufasa look bad. Awesome review. I hope you have an awesome day.
Yep folks have been making Sonic/DBZ references for years. The 7 Chaos Emeralds as the power up and the 7 Dragonballs not necessarily power ups for the characters but still relevant. Growing up playing the Sonic games I lost my shit when Crush 40 started blasting during the climax.
Took my kids to see Sonic and they both loved it. I was as entertained as Amanda seemed to be. It's a surprisingly decent kids movie and a good Sonic movie. It's not Transformers One, but that shouldn't have been what it was either. America learned the lesson in WW2 and then forgot it.
I saw the first sonic movie last week, I loved it. So the I watch the 2nd and 3rd this past weekend. Each of those movies have so much heart put into them. I love them!
The absolute hype i felt when that first note of Live and Learn played was beyond belief. My roommate and I were cheering so hard. And at the mid credits scene with Metal Sonic we were legit screaming. I am praying to whatever god will listen that we get Metal Overlord in Sonic 4, complete with What I'm Made Of blaring as they fight him
Can't believe Barry Jenkins sold his artistic vision to direct this type of movie. As the director of "Moonlight" and "If Beale Street Could Talk", I expect something so much better from him instead of this 😢
This why I think Disney meddling is probably the bigger culprit. You know this executives can’t trust someone to be just artistic they’ve got to make sure it hits the corporate check boxes.
I love Sonic Movie 3 It has some flaws, and some scenes dragged, but i really love Sonic and Shadow and development in the movie. They made the film enjoyable and shadow, sonic and shadow bonding over grief and losing a loved one, made me cry. Themes of being true to yourself and making the right choices and remembering how much the one you lost and remembering how they loved you, maria and Shadow scenes was so cute, and i love theirs relationship. When "lived and learned" comes on and seeing sonic and shadow Banter, was so fun,i fangirl so hard.
22:52 all the important ones at least. To be fair, they only teased Tails at the end of the first one, and they had Knuckles in 2, so they could have more characters. Rouge with Shadow would make sense, and I would like to see Cream, though she seems to have fallen off in popularity. I can live without Big, Silver, Vector, and most of the others.
For me the deciding moment of Sonic was Shadow asking if Maria would want to destroy the world and Gerald looking back and saying “it’s not about what Maria would want, it’s about what they deserve for taking her.” That line hit me deep. I know it’s a kids movie but the drama between the two characters in that line really was excellent.
I think the most interesting thing about Scar (besides it managing to make me angry when that’s very hard to do) is that AT THE CORE OF MY BEING I know we did not get the movie that Barry Jenkins intended. There’s no way. This absolute mess has to be the result of studio meddling.
It's an unconfirmed common belief that the super Sonic transformation IS an homage to the DBZ comics. Sonic's creator is supposedly a big fan of DBZ. The movie is likely hitting that note with the Super Sonic vs Super Shadow fight.
That Super Sonic/Shadow fight was one of the hypest dbz-style fights I've ever seen, and it was in a live action Sonic movie? My kid self would have never believed me in a million years.
Yuji Naka, creator of sonic, actually got the idea for super sonic while watching DBZ with his children in the 90's so, yeah, that's intentional. As a huge Sonic fan, that DBZ fight between Sonic and Shadow is exactly what we all hoped they'd do, but I personally didn't expect them to. 10/10 for meeting and exceeding my expectations!
I love the fact that you thought you needed to explain your thinking and that people wouldn't INSTANTLY reference Dragonball Z the moment we see golden Sonic!
When details about Mufasa first came out I said "...Did they seriously just make the Snake Eyes movie for Mufasa and Scar? Because that movie was a flop to begin with, Disney." But no, they managed to do worse than Snake Eyes, because at least in it the betrayal actually happened because of the person the heir brought in and trusted stealing (in his eyes) his rightful position right out from under him and not because he wants the girl and to heck with everyone if he can't have her.
Wow I didn’t think you were gonna’ talk about these movies Amanda. Seeing her contrast Sonic 3’s strengths with Mufasa’s weaknesses reminds me of how funny she can be. 😂
The thing about when Sonic was about to kill Shadow, Shadow tells him directly to hit him in the chest. He literally says, “Finish it. Hit me, right here.” While pointing to his heart. I might just sound dumb, or overthinking it, or it’s just Shadow. But, did that mean Shadow wanted to die? Consumed by the pain of Maria, did Shadow want to die, and when Sonic was about to kill him, he practically welcomes it. I wouldn’t be very surprised by that, if that’s the truth, but that’s just what I thought of that specific scene.
Oh wow I was not expecting an Amanda review of these 2 movies, but boy am I glad we got one!!! I’ve had something of a hyperfixation on the comparison of these two movies(and kind of Sonic as a whole. Of course I’m on team Sonic. I just finished sewing a little Maria plushie. ALL HAIL SHADOW!!!🖤♥️) and I’m so glad that I got to see the opinion of one of my favorite movie reviewers. Also, I think that Amanda will be proud to know that I had a 2 hour discussion on the merits and faults of the Twilight franchise with my sis this morning😂
I love when you do these comparisons of two movies. You time them so well that it's always interesting, even when it's two movies I don't plan to watch.
I think having Sonic's decent into revenge capped off with him becoming Super Sonic. A form that looks almost identical to Shadow is really good use of preexisting connections to tell a story.

Nope........ they blasted that during the epic climax of the movie while sonic and shadow were kicking ass. The movie understood what the people wanted
Disney DOESN'T understand the people and gave us an unnecessary prequel to a soulless cash geab of a movie nobody asked for. Surprise surprise, they're losing AGAIN. Maybe this time they'll........... live and learn lol
nah disneys just gonna keep doing the same thing because they are creatively bankrupt and theres more soulless remakes announced such as lilo and stick and snow white

Mufasa is yet another soulless Disney origin story prequel that absolutely nobody asked for. Sonic has evidently a lot of heart, and you can tell that the people who worked on it were passionate about it.
Very true!
Yet people are seeing it, currently it's(I believe) above Sonic globally, and has seen growth over the Holiday weekend.
I would hope so since Jeff Fowler worked on Shadow the Hedgehog 05. He KNOWS the Sonic franchise.
"I love the way you make them" 😢
And better yet, this was for the main villain of the series up to this point!

So gross.
Yeah hearing that element of the plot really fucking grosses me out. There are just. So many alternatives.
It's 2025 but the movie is set in ancient Africa. They aren't going to have our modernized views.
I still don’t understand how The Lion King(2019) made $1.6 Billion when I never hear anyone saying they liked it.
From what I know, it was because of China. There are two reasons, that being China hadn't seen movies with the CGI that was seen in Lion King and the fact that apparently, they hadn't seen the original (though I'm skeptical on that one).
Easy, nostalgia. Nostalgia sells. That movie came out 2 months after the Aladdin remake which the latter made over a billion dollar so it was still a huge trend back then
The general audience usually doesn’t think critically when watching movies and are easily impressed. Also nostalgia.
It doesn't matter if they liked it. All they had to do was watch it

Disney just isn't it right now
So basically they didn’t like that Scar is commonly viewed as kind of a fun, evil, queer icon, so they decided to take away everything about him that made him fun.
That's 100% why I think they did it. They'd rather he just be a loathsome incel loser than gay.
I shed a tear over doomed gays in sonic 3 and while I haven't seen mufasa (and don't intend to) i imagine that movie wouldn't let me have that experience
Mufasa ripped any shred of gay away
@ tragic and yet oh so very expected
Im straight and I feel that.
Both of those ideas are so much better than what we got that it actually makes me angry.
You just wrote a better movie than Disney, and via a UA-cam comment section
This is a way better idea compared to what Disney came up with, ngl

The Sonic movie isn’t anywhere close to the source material, but it is a fun movie with a speedy blue hedgehog goofing off with his friends. When the movies first came out I was wary of the abundance of human characters, there was a Chris shaped reason of why some hated Sonic X
If it was that simple the Sonic fanbase wouldn't be as terrible as it is
@clouddavis I think "respect the source material" and "stick to the source material" are 2 different statements. Sonic is obviously a very different STORY, but the energy and vibes and overall written tone of the movies are respect the original. Its like the original live action Avatar vs the 2015 Cinderella.
Fun fact, hornbills can live for 30+ years whereas lions only live for 10-15 so Zazu being around checks out. Nature is cool.
@@BrandonJames2016I dunno, his death was very emotional. It would be ruined if he returned
Wow, there was a prequel book like that? I'll have to check it out. Pretty sure it's way better than the movie. 😂
Exactly!! While I may not have read the books, I know they exist. (Deviant art is a hell of a place for lion king fans)
He was doing worse than flirting. He was straight up trying to assault poor girly. They cut it because it was too serious but they kept Nala running away (which was because of the cut)
@@softsounds8453 That makes sense. I just remember him being kinda creepy.
Especially Vegeta being on Shadow's character deveolpment sheet.
yeah big fan of Shadow in this, and, neat to know the DBZ stuff is intentional!
Meanwhile Silver is directly inspired by Trunks.
The Sonic/Shadow and Goku/Vegeta comparisons are fully intentional. Like it's not just a comparison, it's borderline copyright lol
It's been copyright since 1992
It’s not even that, the Shadow/Vegeta comparison is practically a full-on Sega mandate.
If it was copyright then the chinese would be having a field day w DB cause it uses a lot of Xianxia thropes. Not even mentioning how the MC’s name is literally Sun Wukong’s JP localization (Son Goku).
Not even just with sonic/shadow. Silver is straight up just Trunks
Silver is not trunks there's a forgotten game that Sega worked on in 2006 beside sonic 06
There's a character that resembles silver and this game is definitely based of time travel so silver is not intentionally by many compare to trunks
"living and learning"? I see what you did there
"finding their flame" and "endless possibilities" great songs as well
The fact that I forgot several times that this was also a video about Mufasa speaks volumes.
That said, I'm taking my kids to see Sonic.
I really enjoyed Sonic 3 so I'm sure they'll enjoy the film if they're already Sonic fans. Have fun guys
At the half of it I just jumped the Mufasa parts cause it was more interesting to hear her thoughts on Sonic 3.
@@CanIswearinmyhandle That gives a whole 'nother context to the scene of him and Maria reaching hands through the glass 🤣🤣🤣
8:25 tbf, the reason why Mufasa and Scar have a fallout over Sarabi in this movie is because they established this as the reason for Scar's jealousy back in the remake (and it was stupid there, too 😂)

The funny irony is, anymore remember how just 4-5 years ago, Lion King made over a billion dollars at the box office while Sonic was on the merge of flopping because the target audience, and everyone else for that matter, was going “mommy I’m scared of Sonic”?
Oh how has things flipped around so drastically.
I knew nothing about the Sonic's universe before watching these movies, and Stone and Robotnik's partnership is what drew me in this trilogy. Love them

You gotta wonder how much executive interference effects things. Disney is not the place for creative freedom.
They really did Maria and Shadow so well in this film especially.
It was the Tokyo Sky Tree
Tokyo Tower is the the one that sort of looks like the Eiffel Tower
I love SA2, but it's definitely more, you're sad because Shadow's sad I think.
The movie gave her a personality, and that little bit went a long way.
Shadow's Akira slide going UP the tower is the coolest homage to the original that I think I have ever seen in my life!! Absolute perfection!!!!
Beep repair!
Visual abomination is the most accurate description for all those live action remakes 😂
3:53 Scar is actually Mufasa's brother though, right? So wouldn't make any sense for them to meet that way.

Rouge with Shadow would make sense, and I would like to see Cream, though she seems to have fallen off in popularity. I can live without Big, Silver, Vector, and most of the others.
At the end of 3 we were demanding silver in the next installment 😭. This “one character per movie” shtick is killing me.

He literally says,
“Finish it.
I think having Sonic's decent into revenge capped off with him becoming Super Sonic. A form that looks almost identical to Shadow is really good use of preexisting connections to tell a story.
