  • Russia wants to put a nuclear weapon into space, new intelligence suggests. Although details are slim, policy experts said that the technology could be used against satellites, raising questions about Russia’s intentions and the potential ramifications of an orbital detonation.
WSJ looks at the history of nuclear detonation in space with Starfish Prime and explores what we know about Moscow’s development.

Russia has had FOBS systems in play since the SS-18 went online. This is designed as an anti-sat/EMP weapon. What most don't realize is that any Teller-Ulam thermonuclear detonated as a high atmospheric airburst will have this effect. This is not new, nor is it terrifying. Literally been around since at least the early '80's.

They've had an anti-satellite capability for years. You've never heard of the satellite that releases another and then that releases another that could be used as a kinetic impactor at short notice (cosmos 2519, 2521, cosmos 2542, 2543 + rocket powered projectile)? Apparently this 'newer' threat is nuclear powered, not a nuclear (explosive) weapon. Enough power to jam satellites over a large area, to prevent surveillance, not to physically destroy them.

Im not here to defend Russia but having no cultural analysis in any of these news stories is mind numbing. Russia has been historically anti-nuclear in terms of space and seen it as a joint venture. At the height of the cold war there were countless joint space missions for gods sake. Many russians still see space as the ultimate frontier and the pride of their nation for their early achievements in space flight. A nuclear attack would be indiscriminate and damage russian assets equally. Damaging the last of their presence in orbit would be unthinkable for Russia, unless in an all out war of course.. .

What if theyre working on a way to prevent their tech and satalites from being affected by emps?... if thats possible, this might be him beginning to test it. Imagine the advantage of using multiple emps while being the only one with electical infrastructure and quick communication........ they're not strong enough to beat the world, so why not kneecap it first to even the playing field.

The damage caused by Starfish Prime on land was minimal: "the power grid" that it fried was small in Hawaii (about one or two surge protectors disconnected). and a a few Microwave links fried (very few two or tree)...a few people looking to the explosion had retina damage (this was the worst damage). But in space all satellites in orbit were permanently disabled and those launched about 6 months after too: about 6 satellites were completely disabled, but not immediately they failed along a 6 month period because the charged particles trapped on Earth's magnetic field. So despite the the specialist apocalyptic predictions there is none. A nuclear device in space is not very selective and you want to disable the adversary satellites not your own satellites. I see no reason for despair as China used anti satellite weapons at least twice in the past and ... so what despite the amount of dangerous debris and possibility of a Kessler syndrome we are all here today including ISS (that had to make a few minor orbit corrections).
Russia probably is developing ASAT weapons since Brezhnev was still alive, this is old news reframed as FUD.
USA should no whine about that and create their own ASAT weapons as Russia never complied to all territorial treaties it signed since the end of URSS. This looks like more a propaganda war because Congress is spineless (or some are corrupt opportunistic supporters of Putin by proxy: meaning Trump) to approve military help to Ukraine.

It can be helpful to notice that the opposite of what Putin says is very often a true and useful communicate. So "we have always been categorically against and are now against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space" should read: "we are confident and invested to the deployment and use of nuclear weapons in space". It takes only a moment to learn. Another example could be "We do not have any intention to invade Ukraine, these are just exercises"... we all already know what he really meant.

Lasers against enemy satellites? First we have to find the Russian satellites, pump enough power & focus the beam long enough to damage the target. Our blaster must match the target's speed & orbit, bc laser energy diminishes with the inverse square of distance btwn source & enemy objects.

When will we move forward with positive energy and realize that we all benefit by working together and being ONE FAMILY, HUMAN!!! No war!, no killing, no more!! Imagine that! And our higher dimensional brothers and sisters can come and help us along our way, being a part of a PEACEFUL galactic FAMILY!!!! It's primarily old energy world leaders holding us back!!!! May Love and Peace be ours, ALL OF US, SOONER rather than LATER! The choice is ours!!!
